GAMBLING AWARENESS WEEK: MARCH 6 - 12
There has been little research on the relationship between gambling and family
violence. Counselors working with problem gamblers and their families are very
familiar with the fear, anger and stress that gambling problems create in families. The study cited here drew data from a national survey that included 3,334 adults,
18 and over, who were representative of the US population.US National Comorbity Survey Replication
Aside from the data shown in the chart, the following information also found:
Problem and pathological gambling wereassociated with both being a victim and a
perpetrator of domestic violence.
As a matter ofpublic health policy, greater attention needs to be given toprevention of gambling problems as a
factor in reducing child abuse and intimate
partner violence.DMHAS Problem Gambling Services
Gambling is the act ofriskingmoney, property, or something else ofvalue on an activit
with an uncertain outcome.
Problem gambling has nothing to do with money.
Studies show that up to twenty people connected to a problem gambler are affected by thproblem gambling.
Continued problem gambling will not get a gambler out of debt.
Problem gambling is considered a hidden addiction because it is often possible to concealit for much longer periods of time than a substance addiction. CT Council on Problem Gambling

Selling your house? Lock up your meds! The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has observed the following trend.
Home sellers who leave their homes in the hands of a realtor for a few hours willusually lock up valuables like jewelry, personal papers and electronics. Neither
realtors nor home sellers think of locking up medications. Stealing drugs from
open houses is indeed a technique drug thieves use to obtain controlled substance prescriptiondrugs, said DEAs Barbara, Carreno. Drugs stolen during open houses include opioid
painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs, ADHD drugs, Xanax and Valium. drugfree.org
HAVE A PET?
A growing number of pets are being accidentally poisoned, and prescription medicines are largely
to blame. Prescription medications for humans have accounted for the majority of calls aboutaccidental poisoning for the past two years. Common human medications can be
fatal to animals. (One acetaminophen will kill a cat.) Dogs are more likely to be
poisoned than cats. The actual number of pets poisoned is not known since pet
owners will take their animals to their vets rather than call a hotline, but the ASPCAreports it received more than 180,000 calls about poisonous substances last year. (up

Bullying is the most common form of violence experienced by youngpeople in the nation. Bullying is defined as an act of repeated physical
or emotional victimization of a person by another person or a group. The FBI says the third most common location nationwide for a hate
crime (bullying) is on a school or college campus.Kids who appear more capable, confident, and resourceful are generally more successful in
warding off a bully. Thats why arming your child with confidence is one of the best defenses
against bullying. Find a way to boost your childs inner strength.
Whats in Your Childs Suitcase?Every child carts around a suitcase full of past experiences, talents, and voices of people whomtheyve met along the way. Good or bad, that baggage comes with them. It is our job, as the
adults in your childrens lives, to help them sort through that baggage and uncover their assets.
For some, the strengths are easily spotted. They are gifted students, outstanding athletes, prolific
writers. For others, those strengths are buried under a pile of dirty laundry. Its easy to see thesechildren for their deficits. But thats what everyone else does. We must be the ones who dig
through the baggage and uncover their strengths. It will take a special person to help themuncover those assets so that they can see them for themselves. Bully by Lee Hirsch.& Cynthia Lowen

Researchers at the University of Mississippi have developed a patch to deliver THC, the
psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. They say it could be used to treat pain, glaucoma and thenausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. The researchers said the patch may be more
effective than THC pills. The patch would eliminate negative consequences of smoked marijuana.
