Two new studies have linked diet soda to poorer health.

In one study, people who drank two or more diet sodas a day experienced waist size increases that were six times greater than those of people who didnt drink diet soda. A second study that found that aspartame (NutraSweet) raised blood sugar levels in diabetes-prone mice.

Diet soda is easily one of the biggest health scams preying on well-meaning dieters looking for a sweet calorie-free beverage. Nearly 927 million cases of Diet Coke, and another 892 million cases of Diet Pepsi, were sold in 2010. If you bought one or more of those millions, please realize you would be better off flushing that money down the drain, as at least then you would not be harming

your health.

As an aside: The one commentator who provided more advice on these matters than any other was the Rambam. Born in Cordoba, Spain in 1138, this rabbi, philosopher and physician gave advice which even today is offered by public health educators for our modern population. In any dietary lecture, the stress is not simply on what one eats, but on what the dieticians call portion control.

Diet Soda Drinkers Get a Whopping 70-500 Percent Greater Increase in Waist Size

A study by the University of Texas at San Antonio, added to growing research that diet soda is not a guilt-free treat at all. Instead, after following 474 diet soda drinkers for nearly 10 years, they found that their waists grew 70 percent more than the waists of non-diet soda drinkers. Further, those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had a 500 percent greater increase in waist size!

You May be Fooled by Diet

Soda but Your Brain Isnt

Clearly, if you are still opting for diet soda because you believe it is healthier than regular soda, you are doing yourself a great disservice. Regular soda is by no means a healthy choice either but please dont fall into the trap of believing that diet soda is healthy just because its calorie-free. As the professor and author of the above study, told a major newspaper:

They may be free of calories but not of consequences.

Indeed, it was several years ago now that a researcher, who was also involved in the study noted above, and colleagues found that your risk of obesity increases by 41 percent for each can of diet soda you drink in a day.

So what is going on?

Substances like Splenda and aspartame may have zero calories, but your body isnt fooled. When it gets a sweet taste, it expects calories to follow, and when this doesnt occur it leads to distortions in your biochemistry that may actually lead to weight gain.

As far as sweetness satisfaction in your

brain is concerned, it can tell the difference between

a real sugar and an artificial one, even if

your conscious mind cannot. Artificial

sweeteners tend to trigger more communication in the brains

pleasure center, yet at the same time

provide less actual satisfaction. So when you consume artificial sweeteners, your body craves more, as well as real sugar, because your brain is not satisfied at a cellular level by the sugar imposter. There is even research suggesting that artificial sweetener use may ruin your bodys ability to control calories, thus boosting your inclination to overindulge.

Diet Soda is Not a Healthier Alterna-tive

There are other reasons aside from weight gain to think twice before drinking diet soft drinks. In fact, there are already hundreds of published studies linking artificial sweeten-ers like aspartame, which is widely used in diet soda, to serious health complications.

A doctor interviewed a nutritionist, who over a 2.5-year period performed a set of meticulous and detailed animal experiments, documenting the effects of using aspartame liquid comparable to diet soda. This included not only large tumors but also neurological effects, paralysis, skin disorders and symptoms of cerebral palsy.

If youre finding it difficult to ditch diet soda, your emotional connection to cravings might be an important factor for you. Do your utmost to kick your diet soda habit.

Once you have broken your addiction, you may be able to introduce the natural sweetener Stevia, which can be used to make your own drinks and food dishes. Favorites are the liquid stevias that come in flavors which you can even add to seltzer water to make a far healthier soda alternative.

Overweight Risk Soars 41% With Each Daily Can of Diet Soft Drink

People who drink diet soft drinks dont lose weight. In fact, they gain weight, a new study shows.

The findings come from eight years of data collected by colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

What didnt surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity, researchers said. What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher.

In fact, when the researchers took a closer look at their data, they found that nearly all the obesity risk from soft drinks came from diet sodas.

There was a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day.

More Diet Drinks, More Weight Gain

The team looked at seven to eight years of data on 1,550 Mexican-American and non-Hispanic white Americans aged 25 to 64. Of the 622 study participants who were of normal weight at the beginning of the study, about a third became overweight or obese.

For regular soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

26% for up to 1/2 can each day

30.4% for 1/2 to one can each day

32.8% for 1 to 2 cans each day

47.2% for more than 2 cans each day.

Splenda (sucralose) is being downgraded from safe to caution after an Italian animal study linked sucralose to a higher risk of developing leukemia chv. The Center for Sci-ence in the Public Interest (CSPI) says it awaits the Italian studys review before deciding what long-term safety grade to assign to Splenda in its Chemical Cuisine guide to food additives.

Hundreds of millions of people globally use artificial sweeteners, which are commonly found in a wide range of food and drinks, including food for diabetes, cakes, milkshakes, soft drinks, and even medications.

The steadily growing problem of obesity and type 2 diabetes in developed and middle income countries has led to rising demand for reduced-calorie foods and drinks. How-ever, the growth of the artificial-sweetener market has brought with it concerns among consumers regarding the potential health consequences.

Italian study linked a lifetime of sucra-lose consumption to leukemia risk

The director of the Ramazzini Institute in Bologna, Italy, and his team fed 843 laboratory mice varying doses of sucralose from when they were fetuses until they died.

Post-mortems showed an association between leukemia risk and lifetime sucralose consumption - the more sucralose they consumed, the higher their risk of leukemia.

The director advises:

Children and expectant mothers should avoid consuming artificial sweeteners until appropriate studies clearly show there is no cancer risk.

The CSPI added that the only long-term feeding studies on sucralose in animals, before the Italian one, were conducted by Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Splenda.

As things stand at the moment, these

36.5% for up to 1/2 can each day

37.5% for 1/2 to one can each day

54.5% for 1 to 2 cans each day

57.1% for more than 2 cans each day.

For each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, a persons risk of obesity went up 41%.

Diet Soda No Smoking Gun

The team quickly suggested that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.

One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda, they suggest. But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity.

Why? A nutrition expert puts it in a nutshell.

You have to look at whats on your plate, not just whats in your glass.

People often mistake diet drinks for diets, says a nutrition consultant to profes-sional athletes.

A lot of people say, I am drinking a diet soft drink because that is better for me. But soft drinks by themselves are not the root of Americas obesity problem, she says. You cant go into a fast-food restaurant and say, Oh, its OK because I had diet soda. If you dont do anything else but switch to a diet soft drink, you are not going to lose weight.

CSPI adds that it would be useful to have further testing done on rebiana. Their executive director adds: Sucralose may prove to be safer than saccharin, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium, but the forthcoming Italian study warrants careful scrutiny before we can be confident that the sweetener is safe for use in food.

Diet sodas probably still better than regular ones

Even though concerns exist regarding the health risks associated with artificial sweeteners, CSPI believes people are better off drinking diet rather than regular sugar-sweetened sodas. The health consequences from regularly drinking sugar-laden soft drinks, which include obesity, gout, tooth decay, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, are probably greater.

Water is best - CSPI encourages consum-ers to drink water, seltzer water (effervescent mineral water), flavored unsweetened waters, unsweetened iced tea, or seltzer mixed with natural fruit juice.

New sweeteners enter CSPIs Chemical

Cuisine guide

CSPI has included some new natural sweeteners in its Chemical Cuisine guide:

- Monkfruit extract (also known as Luo Han Guo or Lo Han Kuo) - contains mogro-sides. Mogrosides are 200 times sweeter than sugar. However, they can leave a licorice-like aftertaste. Monkfruit extract currently has a caution rating because it has not been tested scientifically.

- Monatin - derived from a South Af-rican shrub. Monatin is said to be 3,000 times sweeter than sugar. Monatin currently has a caution

rating because it has not been tested scientifi-cally.

Sucralose is about 600 times as sweet as table sugar (sucrose), three times as sweet as aspartame, and twice as sweet as saccharin.

NEW YORK STATE SECURITY-ALARM-SURVEILLANCE LICENSE.

EPI IS OFFERING an extensive course that encompasses all aspects of alarms/security enabling the graduate enough familiarity to purse a career or enter the field as an entrepreneur with his own business. The opportunities in the field are many and the applications of the course work span a number of security-alarm- surveillance career options. The course will be given in Boro Park 3 Days a week over a 6 week period. Classes will be from 8:30am - 5pm. After which graduates will be well prepared for the New York security-alarm-surveillance license exam. The cost of the course will be $699 all inclusive and will commence in February. The classes & Exam will be given in English.

That wouldnt be convenient, perhaps, for this gentleman, said the colonel, in a jeering tone.

It would be perfectly so, replied Phileas Fogg.

Well, we are really in America, thought Passepartout, and the conduc-tor is a gentleman of the first order!

So muttering, he followed his mas-ter.

The two combatants, their seconds, and the conductor passed through the cars to the rear of the train. The last car was only occupied by a dozen passen-gers, whom the conductor politely asked if they would not be so kind as to leave it vacant for a few moments, as two gentle-men had an affair of honor to settle. The passengers granted the request with alacrity, and straightway disappeared on the platform.

The car, which was some fifty feet long, was very convenient for their pur-pose. The adversaries might march on each other in the aisle, and fire at their ease. Never was dueling more easily arranged. Mr. Fogg and Colonel Proctor, each provided with two six-barreled revolvers, entered the car. The seconds, remaining outside, shut them in. They were to begin firing at the first whistle of the locomotive. After an interval of two minutes, what remained of the two gentlemen would be taken from the car.

Nothing could be simpler. Indeed, it was all so simple that Fix and Passep-artout felt their hearts beating as if they would crack. They were listening for the whistle agreed upon, when suddenly savage cries resounded in the air, accom-

panied by reports which certainly did not issue from the car where the duelists were. The reports continued in front and the whole length of the train. Cries of terror proceeded from the interior of the cars.

Colonel Proctor and Mr. Fogg, revolvers in hand, hastily quitted their prison, and rushed forward where the noise was most clamorous. They then perceived that the train was attacked by a band of Sioux.

This was not the first attempt of these daring Indians, for more than once they had waylaid trains on the road. A hundred of them had, according to their habit, jumped upon the steps without stopping the train, with the ease of a clown mounting a horse at full gallop.

The Sioux were armed with guns, from which came the reports, to which the passengers, who were almost all armed, responded by revolver-shots.

The Indians had first mounted the engine, and half stunned the engineer and stoker with blows from their mus-kets. A Sioux chief, wishing to stop the train, but not knowing how to work the regulator, had opened wide instead of closing the steam-valve, and the locomo-tive was plunging forward with terrific velocity.

The Sioux had at the same time invaded the cars, skipping like enraged monkeys over the roofs, thrusting open the doors, and fighting hand to hand with the passengers. Penetrating the baggage-car, they pillaged it, throwing the trunks out of the train. The cries and shots were constant. The travelers defended themselves bravely; some of the cars were barricaded, and sustained a siege, like moving

forts, carried along at a speed of a hundred miles an hour.

Aoud behaved courageously from the first. He defended himself like a true hero with a revolver, which he shot through the broken windows whenever a savage made his appearance. Twenty Sioux had fallen mortally wounded to the ground, and the wheels crushed those who fell upon the rails as if they had been worms. Several passengers, shot or stunned, lay on the seats.

It was necessary to put an end to the struggle, which had lasted for ten minutes, and which would result in the triumph of the Sioux if the train was not stopped. Fort Kearney station, where there was a garrison, was only two miles distant; but, that once passed, the Sioux would be masters of the train between Fort Kearney and the station beyond.

The conductor was fighting beside Mr. Fogg, when he was shot and fell. At the same moment he cried, Unless the train is stopped in five minutes, we are lost!

It shall be stopped, said Phileas Fogg, preparing to rush from the car.

Stay, monsieur, cried Passepar-tout; I will go.

Mr. Fogg had not time to stop the brave fellow, who, opening a door unperceived by the Indians, succeeded in slipping under the car; and while the struggle continued and the balls whizzed across each other over his head, he made use of his old acrobatic experience, and with amazing agility worked his way under the cars, holding on to the chains, aiding himself by the brakes and edges of the sashes, creeping from one car to another with marvelous skill, and thus

gaining the forward end of the train.

There, suspended by one hand be-tween the baggage-car and the tender, with the other he loosened the safety chains; but, owing to the traction, he would never have succeeded in unscrew-ing the yoking-bar, had not a violent concussion jolted this bar out. The train, now detached from the engine, remained a little behind, whilst the locomotive rushed forward with increased speed.

Carried on by the force already acquired, the train still moved for several minutes; but the brakes were worked and at last they stopped, less than a hundred feet from Kearney station.

The soldiers of the fort, attracted by the shots, hurried up; the Sioux had not expected them, and decamped in a body before the train entirely stopped.

But when the passengers counted each other on the station platform sever-al were found missing; among others the courageous Frenchman, whose devotion had just saved them.
