GM's Call GetsResponse

he response to the call ofthe MW GrandMaster for relief to the distressed peopleof Central Luzon ravaged by theaftermath of the eruption of MounlPinatubo has been very encouraging,

The message reached far-away England and, intypical Masonic Charity fashion, the United GrandLodge of England responded. The equivalent amountof P796,000.00 was sent to the Grand Lodge of thePhilippines expressly to be givenas aid to the victimsofthe calamity through the Philippine National Red

Ctoss.

Emon Lodge No. 179 responded likewise, sendingone 20-foot container van of relief goods.

MW Danilo Angeles promptly turned over thecash and goods to the PNRC on February 6, 1996 as

requested. Ofcourse, as Masons, we understand therationale for the procedure. We are familiarwith thepassage about ". . . the left hand not knowing whatthe right hand is doing . . ." which translates to thehighest form of charity with the donor not knowingthe benefi ciary and vice-versa becaum if the recipientknew the donor, then the act would have been paidfor.

The act is typically Masonic inthe absence ofpressreleases. We do our good works quietly and letothers judge by the manner of our actions'

We await with patience the continuous flow ofrelief.@

WE ARE SUHVIVORS!!!(for those born be{ore 1945)

We were born belore television, belore penicillin, betore polio shots, lrozen toods, xerox, plastic, contacl lenses, frisbees and ihe pill. Wewere bcm betore radar, credit cards, split atoms, beams and ballpoinlpens. Belore pantyhoso, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, air conditioners, dripdry clothes...and belore man walked on the moon.

We got married first and then lived together. How quaint can you be?ln our time, closets were lor clothing, not lor "coming out o1.,, Bunnieswere small rabbits, and rabbits were not Volkswagens.

We were bslore house husbands, gay rights, computer daling, dualcareers and computer marriages. We were berore day-care centers, group therapy and nursing homos. We never heard ol FM radio, tapedecks, electronic typewriters, a logetherness....not compulers orcondominiums.Achipmeanta pieceolwood. Hardwaremeanlhardwareand softwaro wasn't even a word.

Back then, "Made in Japan" meant iunk and lhe term ,,making out,,

relen€d to how you did on your exam:..Pizzas, McDonalds and inslantcoffees were unhead of . We hit the scens whe,e there were 5 and 10cenl stores, where you bought things lor 5 and 10 csnls. For one nickelyou could ride a slreel car, make a phone call, buy a pepsi or enoughstampsto mailone letter and two poslcards. You could buy a newChevycoupe lor $600...but who could allord one? A pity too, because gas was1 cent a gallon!

ln our day, Grass was mowed, COKE was a cold drink and pOT wassomething you cooked in. ROCK MUSlCwas Grandma's lullaby, andAIDS were helpers in the Principal's ollice. Wewere c€rtainly not belorothe difference between the sexes was discovered, but we were surelyberore the sex change. We made do with what we had.

No wonder we are so conlused and lhere is such a generation gaptoday.

But, we survived!!!Whal better reason lo celebrate?

MAN and a MASON...Compiled by ilIW DANILO D. ANGELES

Masonry means much morethan wearing of a pin

or -carrying a paid-up dues receipt; So, the Lodge would let you in.

You can wear an emblem on your coatand-from a finger flash a ring;

But if you're not sincere at heartthis does not mean a thing.

It's merely an outward signto show the world that you belong; To this great Fraternal Brotherhood

that teaches right from wrong-

What really counts lies buried deepwithin the human breast;

'Til Masonic teachings bringsit out and puts it to a test.

If yolr can practice out of the Lodgethe things you learn within;

Be just and upright to yourselfand to your fellowmen.

Console a Brother when he is sickor assist him when in need;

Without a thought of personal rewardfor any act or deed..

Walk and act in such a waythat the world without could see ihat none

but the best could meet the test, laid down by Masonry.

Always live up to your trustAnd do the Best that you can

Then you can proudly tell the world...

WHEN IS A MAN A MASON?by Rev. Joseph Fort Newton

When he can look out over the rivers, the hills, and the far horizonwith a profound sense ofhis own littleness in the vast scheme ofthings, and yet have faith, hope, and courage - which is the root of eve"ryvirtue.

When he knows that down in his heart every man is as noble, as vile,as divine, as diabolic, and as lonely as himself, and seeks to know, toforgive, and to love his fellow man.

When he-knows how to sympathize with men in their sonows, yea, even in their sins - knpwing that each man fights a hard fight againsimafly odds.

When he has learned how to make friends and to keep them, and' above all how to keep friends with himself.

, When he loves flowers, can hunt birds without a gun, and feels thethrill of an old forgotten joy when he hears the laugh of a little child.

-Y-hethe can be happy and high-minded amid the meaner drudgeries

of life.

When star-crowned trees and the glint ofsunlight on flowing waters, subdue him like the thought of one much loved and long deid.

When no voice ofdistress reaches his ears in vain, and no hand seekshis aid without response.

- When he finds good in every faith that helps any man to lay hold ofdivine things and sees majestic meanings in life, w-hatever the-name ofthat faith may be.

When hc can look into a wayside puddle and see something beyondmud, and into the face of the most forlorn fellow mortaiand seesomething beyond sin.

,

When he knows how to pray, how to love. how to hope.

When he has kept faith with himself, with his fellow man, and rVithhis God; in his hand a sword for evil, in his heart a bit ofa song - gladto live, but not afTaid to die:

Such a man has found the only real secret of Masonry, md the onewhich it is trying to give to all the world,

The Great MasonicCommandments with

Commentariesby VW Amancio S. Donato, GO

EIGHTH COMMANDMENT

Thou shah allow no passions tobecome thy master.

Thou shalt make the passions ofothers profitable lessons to thyself,

Thou shalt be indulgent to enor,

A Freemason must not only use thecomp.rss to circumscribe his desires, but must have also subdued hispasions. He ever bears in mind that, because of unbridled passions, manya man has fallen from great heights ofachievement. As a man who aspiresfor moral rectitude and spiritualunfoldment, the Freemason neverloses sight of the fact that sharppassions of unguarded moments cutvery deep, indeed. As a "Builder," heis speciallyordered to make profitableto himself even the lessons culledfrom the experiences ofmenwho haveindulged in vices as a consequence ofunbridled passions.

We, Freemasons, must make theconquering of vices as steps in theladder ofexperience, whieh lead us toa richer and fuller expression of life.We must always bear in mind thefollowing great and wise precept:'Abstain because it is right to abstain, not that we should be kept clean.l Wemust emulate the wise man who,

52

having become aware of the greatillusions of a passionate life, turnsinwardly and says: "lt is all illusionand I have been.deceived by mysenses."

We should not, however, condemnnor regret anything. We should, instead, use those wonderful lessonsas our guide to do better when thebaser instincts in us call again. Insteadof condemning the men who yield tothe call of passions and vices, weshould, when necessary, try our bestto instruct them, with understandingand compassion. Lest we forget, thisin and shame of the woild is still oursin and shame because our ultimatedestiny is very much linked with allmankind. It becomes our duty, then,to lift a little of the heavy burdens ofour felloH.,rnen whose feet have becomeimbedded in the mires of ignoranceand the senses.

)"To err is human: to forgive isdivine," But, ofcourse, it is better notto have erred at all. Yet in life, we arecontinuously exposed to a round ofchoices and we are prone to commitmistakes - both in acts of omissionand errors of commission. If ever wemake mistakes, instead of regrettingor feeling sorry, we should rise abovethose errors with a good measure ofwisdom and knowledge. As MMs or

MRSs, therefore, we mustalways striveto be so perfect in all our words, thorights and deeds that the Lightwhich we have seen may still become

brighter along the Way,

NINTH COMMANDMENT

Thou shalt hear much, Thou shaltspeak |ittle.

Thou shalt act weLL Thou shaltforgive injuries.

Thou shalt render good for evil.Thou shalt not misuse either thystrength or thy superiority.

To hear much is to listen care-fully with the ear of the spirit wheninstructions are being transmitted. Italso implies the capacity to absorbmuch from wise counsel and wordsof wisdom and listen to the Song ofLife as well as to the Voice from withinour innermost being, sometime$known in the East tr the Voice ofSilence and commonly calledconscience. Most frequently, we arevery preoccupied with the externalworld so that even the voice of thesages gets lost in the noise of the

"madding" crowd, so that we can nolonger detect those sounds thatmattermuch to us. Since instructions andwise counsel are rarely repeated, wedo frequently lose the opportunity torespond properly when the occasionpresents itself.

We must hear even the cries of thesuffering humanity, so thatwe can actaccordingly, that is, render assistancewhere and when needed. It is,decidedly, essential to hear much!

Speak little? That means thatwe canonly speak what reflects the true, thegood, the beautiful, the wise. Andbefore we canspeakin the presence of

JANUARY. FEBRUABY 1996

THE CABLETOW

T.G.A.T.U., our voice must have lostthe power to wodnd! We must subie€tour power of sPeech to thoroughhecking andcontrollest, in the process,

we also become agents of falsity andsuperstitions, thereby increasing thedarkness .that surrounds us in theworld. This is what is meant by "to puta sentinel uponour lips" orby the pun"Lookbefore you lip" (instead ofleap).

To know, to dare, to will and besilent - these are the hallmarks of atrue Mason. Our acts must similarlyreflect the nobility of characterwe profess. We must, in otherwords, do onlywhatis right regardlessof the price or consequences it maybring us. To act well is to do thingswith propriety and efficiency, withcandor and wisdom. Where principlesare at stake, regardless of theconsequences, we, too, must actwiselywithout compromise, withoutcondescension. What is right mustalwaysbe foremost inour minds.ln allour actions, the Temple Builder's goalmust always be the primordialconsideration.

Now let us take a closer look at thesecond and third aphorisms.

So often have we been exposed toconditions where notonly our physicalintegrity is iniured but our pride andself-esteem are wounded. What is ourfirst impulse? It is, mostcommonly, toretaliate in anger and hatred.

When such a situation comes again,we must pause and consider well lestwe lose sight of the wonderfulopportunity of "mending the fences"that have been broken down by thelack of human understanding andbrotherhood.

We have enrolled ourselves in the'Noble Order of Freemasonry as co-

Page 56: vol. 72 NO. · 2020. 7. 1. · undertake a three-in-one affair last December .30. The affair started with the offering JANUARY - FEBRUARY 1996 of fresh flowers at the foot of the

workers of the G.A.O.T.U. and, therefore, must act noblywith wisdom, with patience, with a greaterdegree oftolerance than the ordinary man. TheMaster Jesus has given the followingcounsel to guide us in this respect:

"Whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn him the other. Whosoevercompels you to walk with him a mile, walkwith him twain. Whosoever shallsue you for your coat, give him alsoyour cloak..,." (Matt. 5:39-40),

In this portion of theCommandment, our lower nature, observably, exhibits resistance, Thenfollows the aphorism: "Thou'shaltrender good for evil." An cye for aneye and a tooth for a tooth - that isthe rule of the jungle, But, as MasterBuilders,we have assumed the greaterrole of peace-makers wherevet we are.To fulfill this role, we ourselves musthave become men of peace. We mustalways remember that one of thegreatest secrets of being happy andremaining joyous in this world is toforget and forgive injuries; never tocarry grudges; not to get hurt by thethoughts, words, and acts ofothers; tomaintain a serene, balanceddisposition amidst all apparent furiesand troubles. In this way, we reflect toothers, including our enemies, the"peace that passeth all understanding"and, in the process, the MasterBuilde/s fulfillment of a trust and avow.

The last aphorism, obviously, doesnot refer to physical superiority orstrength only, but also to intelligence,to mental powers. It exhorts us torefrain from taking advantage of ourfellowrnen's weaknesses, ignoranceand failings and to make ourselvesavailable, when necessary, as theirshields against tyranny, oppression, and exploitation.

54

TENTH COMMANDMENT

Thoushaltstudy to know nen, thatthereby thou mayest learn to knowthyself. Thou shalt ever seeft afrervirtue.

Thou shalt be just.Thou shalt avoid idleness!

The first aphorism reminds us that,as Freemasons, we must be rabidstudents ofhuman nature and humanrelations, Our approachto such studiesmust even bd deeper than that of theacademician knowledgeable inpsychology or human behavior. This,in turn, will enable us to understandourselves better - for a greaterrealization of the whys, the whithers, and the wherefores of humanexistence!

To unravel the mystery oflife is thegrandest task of our Ancient Craft. This, then, is the goal ofevery MasterBuilder seeking to establish withinhimself the remaining capstone of theTemplet To attain personal perfectionin his returnjourney to God, the MasterBuilder must, firstof all, know himself. He must also know others who are apart ofhimself. This is Brotherhood inaction!

All men are, indeed, the children ofthe Most High. As such, they deserueto be cherished, to be understood, tobe helped by us along the path towardseternal life. To know our other selfreflected in the face of the seeminglyseparated lives around us is tounderstand their ioys and theirsorows, to proiect ourselves in theirlot, to feel how they ftel, to be onewith them in their joys andmisfortunes. If we re to be true toMasonry, we now transmute thatexperience into golden threads of

Page 57: vol. 72 NO. · 2020. 7. 1. · undertake a three-in-one affair last December .30. The affair started with the offering JANUARY - FEBRUARY 1996 of fresh flowers at the foot of the

wisdom and virtue that we may, each

one of us, become more efficientserven in the Temple. Such, indeed, are the wages awaiting us MasterBuilders - to seek but only to share,

to learn but only to serue.

Let us examine the second, thirdand fourth aphorisms.

To practice the virtues is the onlyway to polish the "rough ashlar" or, tochange the metaphor, the dross ofmatter that has accumulated througheons of human existence, which inturn makes it difficult for us MMs orMRSS to perceive our true nature.

We are all lonelypilgrimswho, moreoften than not, become weary as wepursue our returnjourney to God, oursenses having been dulled by theaccumulation of vices. Hence, themandate to ever seek after virtue. Ifwe are self-righteous Masons, we canonly accomplish the science of moraland spiritual regeneration bypractising the precepts or,alternatively, by learning the hardway of bearing the immutable laws ofnature as consequences ofwrong acts.

'Io be just unto all men is to meetour fellowmen always on the Level. Italso means proper application of fairdealings in all our transactions in theouter world. It means that we shouldbe "softer than the petals of flowerswhere kindness is concerned; butgentle md firm where principles areal slake."

To avoid idleness is to be alwaysoccupied every minute of our lives.Work includes, perforce, quietreflection of our multifarious duties,as well as meditation or contemplationand pourii'rg our loving thoughts tothose in need of help or assistance. In

JANUARY. FEBBUARY 1996

, THE QABLETOW

all our activities, we must not allowour thoughts to be swayed back toinactivit) or sloth.

The summation of all the otherCommandments is a reiteration of thecommandment of Master Jesus:"Love one'another." This is followedby the great Commandment ofMasonry: "He that sals he is in theLight, md hates his brother, remainsstill in darkness,"

Love is self-forgetfulness, but it doesnot mean self-sacrifice norpossessiveness. It is the capacity ofthe human spirit to recognize onenesswith all whether in their sorros,s or intheir joys.

As MMs or MRSs, we presume tohave seen the Light. Yet, if there stillremains an iota ofhatred in our heartsagainst our fellowmen, we are still indarkness. We have, therefore, to reflectin our lives this admonition of theMaster Jesus Christ: ".,. lf thou bringthy gifts to the altar, and thererememberest that thy brother hathought against thee, leave there thygifts before the altar, and go thy way;first be reconciled to thy brother, andthen come and offer thy gift"

Along the path of self-realizationand moral regeneration we can shedonly one Light: the Light ofthe Soul. Ifwe cannot see that Light, it is futile tolook for it elsewhere. An act offorgiveness may just ignite that Lightto shine more brightly on the Way!

Let us, dear Brethren, alwaysremember the great Commandmentof Masonry - the New Commandmentgivenunto eachoneofus: "... Love oneanother. He that sayeth he is in theLight, and hateth his brother, remaineth still in darkness!" @

How Do You Know?

As a man travels through the degrees of Masonry and

A man knows himself to be a Mason when he learns the

hy is it that no Brothershould sit in a chair inthe middle of the norths.de of the Lodge? Why isthere no'officer in theNorth ofa Lodge?

Answer our Monitor: "... becauseKing Solomon's Temple, ofwhich everyregular Lodge is a representation, was

situated so far north of the Eclipticthat neither the Sun nor the Moon, almeridiant height, could dart its raysinto the north part of the buildiqg. The North, therefore, among Nlasons, has always been a place of darkness."

Despite having given the lecture ofthe First Degree for quite some timenow, I have found that explication tobe rather inadequate.

Fortunately, I recently stumbledupon an explanation - a very simpleone - given by RW William A. Brown,PDDGM. This is what he sals:

",., The North is where God, theCreat Archilect of the Universe, issupposed to be seated. In fact, everyreligion and sect of ancient timesbelieved that God was in the Northwatching evcrything on earth. As thesun rose on His left and set on Hisright, He was able to witness all thatwent on in the world of His creation.

58

"Today, we scoffat the ideas ofourancient Brethren, Yet they believedand had proof that God dwelt in theNorth. They knew in their wisdomthat the only point in the Universewhichwas stationarywa in the North,The North Star, or Polaris, was theonly point visible around whicheverything moved or turned. Thus,GOD, who must be at the center ofeverything, must dwell in the North.

"The reference to the NortheastCorner is that as being the place whereeverything started. The sun rose onthe left hand of God to start the dayand is emblematic of the beginning ofeverything which was dedicated toGod.

"From the first time man selected aplace to build, be it a building, houseor temple, it was believed that theland belonged to God, and no manhad a right to take a piece of ground, and say'this is my lmd,' It was believedthat man was permitted to use theearth to live upon, but to say any partofit belonged to him was to invoke thes, rath of God.

"From the earliest known structurebuilt by man, we find all cornerstonesin the NortheastCorner. Itwm believedthat by placing a particular stone inthe Northeast Corner, men were

acknowledging that the structure was

dedicated to God, and wouldbe blessed

and protected by God." (The VirginiaMasonic Herald, Oct. 199S-Jan. 1996'p.s)

According to RWBrown, ourancientBrethren also practiced the custom ofplacing under the cornerstone a dead

man's body as a sacrifice to God'

"Sometimes," he saYs, nthe man was

dead when placed under the stone;

but in most ceremonies, the man was

alive and the stone was dropped uponhim crushing him to death. Thisparticular custom was used when thebuilding was a Temple or some greatsructure erected to God or Potentate

or King. Great walls werl alwaYs

dedicatedwith a live man placed underthe Cornerstone in beliefthat the Wallcouldnotbe brokendown by enemies."(rbid.)

Our RW Brother informs us that thiscustom of placing a bodY under thecornerstone was practiced until themiddle ages. "The Cathedral of NotreDame in Paris, France," he Points out,

"had a body of a man under thecornerstone." He further stresses thatcornerstones should be dropped, andnever slid, into place. (lbid.)

So, Brethren, when Lodge is insession, let us imagine that Cod is

seated on the North side of the Lodge

and is watching everYthing (ourthoughts, words, and deeds) with His

"... the letters of theHoly Name, JAH,were, in their numerical valueequivalent to fifteen; and hence a

Further explains SGW Barry A.Rickman: "A talisman, as definedby Webster's Dictionary, is an objectbearing a sign or character en-graved under astrological influenceand held to act as a charm to avertevil and bring good fortune. Thiswould be somewhat similar to ourgood luck charms or a rabbit's footwe all remember from our youth,Of course, the Oriental's Talismanwith the numbers totaling 15 were farmore meaningful, because theirs wassacred and involved the interventionof the Supreme Architect of theUniverse.

". . . One of the most distressing aspects

of our oun administratiue sgstem is

urhat happens to a Grand Master afterhis one Uear is up. He spends gears in a

succession of posts, gaining knourledge

and eHperience, until his effortsculminate in his being installed Grand

Master - the pinnacle of his success

and pouer. Rs soon as his term eilpires,

he drops from anu real position ofaulhoritU.

Thus the Grand Lodge sgstem might be

likened to a man making a slou, climb up

a mountainside. tUhen he reaches the

top, he does not climb back douln, but ispushed off the cliff. Most of us could

agree ttiat uith experience comes

knouledge, and that the tuo togetherproduce judgment, the greatest

attribute of true leadership. Thus, the

role of the Grand Master mau represent

a great uaste of talent."
