Dear Priests, Brothers and Sisters,
Greetings in the Precious Name of Jesus!
We have celebrated the 100th Birth Day of Blessed Mother
Teresa. It is an honour to the Church and a proud moment
for our country. She has been ‘Good News’ to the poor, the
needy and especially to the neglected. She is a worthy
witness of Sermon on the Mountain. I requested Fr. A.C.
Savarimuthu, VF, Tiruvannamalai, who had done a doctoral
thesis on her to write an article to our News Letter. Hereby
I present to you, the paper that he has written:
On 26.08.2010 all over the world people from different
walks of life celebrated Mother Teresa's Birth Centenary
and paid glowing tribute to her for her humble and
wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor. She
was a missionary of charity par excellence. This is evident
from the instruction that she gave to her followers when
they received the crucifix:
2
"My child, receive the symbol of our crucifiedSpouse. Follow His footsteps in search of souls.Carry Him and His light into the homes of thepoor, especially to the souls most in need. Spreadthe charity of His heart wherever you go and sosatiate His thirst for souls."
Mother Teresa was first and foremost a missionary andcarrier of God's love. To demonstrate this in action MotherTeresa got inspiration from Jesus' words :
"I give you a new commandment : love one anotheras I have loved you, so you are to love one another. If there is this love amongst you, then all will knowthat you are my disciple" (Jn. 14:16)
It was Mother Teresa's strong conviction that to become amissionary of charity one need not do great things but dosmall things with great love for God and make everydayofferings something beautiful for God. She never hesitatedto assert in front of everybody that she was a missionaryof God's love. She felt that as Jesus Christ Himself wassent by His Father (Jn. 17:18) so He sent her too to preachHis gospel of love and compassion to the poorest of thepoor all over the world. Therefore Mother Teresa went outseeking Him in slums, in towns, villages and even amidstsqualid surroundings, the poorest, the abandoned, the sick, the lost, the outcasts, AIDS and leprosy patients. All theseare God's love in the world today.
As missionary she became a messenger of God's love. Thelove of Christ and God motivated her to undertake all theseactivities to serve the poor. Mother Teresa always made itclear in all her interviews and speeches that she was not
3
a social worker. Even for the new members who wish tojoin her Congregation, she stressed that they should jointo serve and quench the thirst of Jesus and not to becomesocial workers. They were expected to radiate Jesus whomade Himself available through the bread of life in orderto satisfy the human hunger. They should keep Hisinterests continually in their hearts and minds.
Mother Teresa tried to give the redeeming charity whichis able to transform all things (1 Cor.13:4-7). The charityof Christ is able to change the most horrible conditioninto a heaven of bliss. She told her sisters, "I want this tobe imprinted in your minds. God still loves through youand through me today. Let me see this love in your eyes,in your actions, in the way you move about. We must notbe afraid to radiate God's love everywhere." Their worksare only a means to quench the thirst of Jesus that echoback to them from thousands of unfortunate people allover the world. Mother Teresa till her last breath triedher level best to live true to the name of her Congregationand also inculcated the same spirit and conviction in allher followers. In the explanation of the originalConstitutions she aptly pointed out that their missionaryactivities and works of charity tend to advance not onlythe conversion and sanctification of their neighbour but itis a grace and a privilege to bring the poorest of the poor toGod.
Pope John Paul II had challenged the Christian world toan evangelization that is new in zeal, new in expressionand new in method. Similarly Mother Teresa's missionaryactivities capture the vision, content, techniques and thespirituality of a new evangelization especially in the thirdmillennium. She courageously all alone stepped into and
4
moved in a new world, a world of the poorest of the poor. She was constantly in search of new ways and means toextend her apostolate. So much so Mother Teresa oncesaid, "If there are poor in the Moon, we shall go there too."As she was travelling to Africa with Air India, across theOcean, she wrote to her Sisters :
"My dearest children, once again I am crossingthe ocean to prepare the way for you in search ofthe hungry Christ, the homeless Christ and thesick Christ. God's ways are wonderful. As a verysmall child, I had longed to go to Africa and workfor Jesus, but for some reasons I did not join theconvent in Africa and now today as a Missionary ofCharity to fulfill the desire of God in my heart andgo with different hope and love because of you whowill fulfill that hope and put that love in action forthe poor in Africa." (Mother's Letter, 17 September1967).
In her efforts to satiate the thirst of Jesus in the poorestof the poor, she tries to bring together the secular and thesacred. For her the world of the thirsty Christ on theCross is synonymous with the world of the wretched poor.It is Mother Teresa's uniqueness to make great attempt tounify these two world of the wretched poor. It is MotherTeresa's uniqueness to make great attempt to unify thesetwo worlds at a time when it is hard to maintin a balancebetween them. Her simple and humble endeavour is onlya drop in the ocean but it helps the world to recognize thepoor.
"I feel that we are just a little drop in the ocean ofthe Church. If we did not put that drop, the ocean
5
will be one drop less. What are we trying to do isto bring Jesus to the poor and bring the poor toJesus. I thing that is all we are trying to do."(Mother's Instructions, Vol. 1, p.185)
"The world today is recognizing the presence ofthe poor that they are our brothers and sisters.Let us thank God for giving us this vocation, to becarriers of love." (Mother's Instructions, Vol.1,p.177)
This is how Blessed Mother Teresa, a living saint, becamethe Missionary of Charity, not because of her spectacularachievements and performance but because of herextraordinary love for God and for the poorest of the poor. Thus she can become a glowing and illumining beaconlight for us in all our mission activities here and now.
Let us pray for the Congregation and to all the membersof that religious society so that they will continue withthe mission entrusted to them through Blessed MotherTeresa.

Prayer Intentions
Let us pray that Catholic Universities may more and more
be places where, in the light of the Gospel, it is possible to
experience the harmonious unity existing between faith
and reason.
Let us pray that the World Mission day may afford an
occasion for understanding that the task of proclaiming
Christ is an absolutely necessary service to which the
Church is called for the benefit of humanity.
