Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. Our family enjoyed our time together. We celebrated the news that we were becoming a great-aunt and uncle in April. We’re really looking forward to that. I’ve been working daily on the new catalog now hoping to have it ready in early spring. It is always a bigger job than it looks like it will be. I still need pictures for the newsletter. Any help you can give me will be appreciated. Sorry this is so short, there’s not a lot of news around here. ‘Til next time......

Cover Car My 1953 Chevrolet Convertible

One morning while listening to the buy and sale program on the local radio station here in Detroit Lakes, a guy advertised a 1953 Chevrolet convertible for sale. While I really didn’t need another car, it interested me because my first car as a teenager was a ‘53 Chev convertible. I called, and after some questions, found that the car had been in an old garage out on a farm for what he thought was the last 20 to 30 years. He stated that the car needed paint, interior and a new top and the motor as stuck. He also said that he wanted $11,000 for it. This sounded way over priced. With that I said goodbye. Over the next couple of days I couldn’t get it out of my mind, so I called him back and he still had the car. I made arrangements to go see it. Looking the car over it appeared to be a solid car. In talking to him I found out that the car had been in the garage since 1960 (this was 2007, 46+ years later) when the owner brought it home from Ft. Hood, Texas, after being discharged from the Army. The owner recently had died and his daughter was selling the car. The car was red with the original black top which was only partially there. The car had an Oldsmobile V8 engine with a 3-speed manual floor shift transmission. The owner had put the V-8 in it and raced it down in Texas while in the service. It still had 1960 Texas license plates on the car. My first look told me that the car needed everything done to it. The firewall and part of the floor had been butchered to accommodate the V-8 motor. The car originally had 235 cu. inch 6-cylinder with a powerglide transmission. The car did appear to be rust free. It was obvious that it wasn’t worth anywhere near their asking price. He wasn’t real interested in any negotiation of price, so I thanked him and told him I would pass on the car and left. This was on a Thursday. I thought about it over the weekend and on Sunday I called him back and found out that he had many calls but I was the only one to come out to look at it. I went back out to look at it a second time and I took a price guide with me. I went through the car and took a much closer look at the condition, which included crawling under the car and taking a close look at the floor. The car was really solid with just a hint of rust in front of the left rear wheel. I questioned him on how they had arrived at the price they were asking for the car. He told he they had looked at a Hemming’s magazine and from the cars they saw in there they felt that this was a reasonable price. I showed him the price guide and explained how to use it. After agreeing that at best this car was in #5 or -5 condition. We then looked at the value established for a ‘53 Chevrolet convertible in a 5 or -5 condition. He agreed that the car

Cover Car was maybe over priced. He said he would be willing to take an offer back to the daughter. I made an offer which was less than -5 and after a short negotiation with the daughter, a deal was made. Since purchasing the car, I have located and purchased a 4-dr. Sedan parts car with the correct motor, transmission and as bonus power steering. This is also a donor for the firewall and floor that were butchered to accommodate the V-8. Presently, I have completely dismantled the convertible, which included taking the body off the frame. The chassis has been sandblasted, rebuilt, primed with epoxy and painted. The power train including the motor, transmission, power steering and brakes have all been rebuilt and installed on the chassis. I repaired the firewall and the floor that had been butchered when the V-8 motor and 3-speed transmission were installed. This has turned out well and is hard to detect that work has been done. The car turned out to be rust-free except one quarter panel where the mice had made their home and had peed for 40+ years and rusted a small area. I have sandblasted the floor and the bottom of the car, along with the door openings, truck and dash. All the paint has been removed from the body, doors, fenders, hood and inner fenders. A repair panel has been purchased from National Chevrolet for the one rust spot. I have taken the car as far as I can myself and have it scheduled to go into a body shop this fall to be painted. I will have the car back in the spring with the body back on the frame with hood, fenders, doors and trunk fitted to the body I will then start putting it back together. I have also had all the chrome both inside and out re-chromed. I have purchased many of the parts that are being reproduced for this car from National Chevrolet, such as inside and outside door handles, wiring harness, etc. I hope to have the car complete in the next year and half to two years doing as much of the work myself that I can. I will update you when it is complete.

Jim

Thanks for the article, Jim. I’m sorry we don’t have your last name.

Hand-in-Hand’s Special Extra FeatureI’ll try not to be too long winded, but a few little stories come to mind I thought you’d find amusing. One of your fellow Association members alerted us to the fact that a junk yard in Northern Minnesota was planning to go out of business, and had an auction planned to liquidate the inventory. We contacted the junk yard and they mailed us an auction bill. “Holy-Moly!” It was an auction that you’d have to be a fool to miss! (It turns out you’d have to be a fool to attend.) The bill listed close to 800 old cars, and we immediately picked out 13 cars we had to own. The auction was to be held at Dick’s Service, a junk yard/pawn shop in Mahnomen, Minnesota. (Population - 147 in the town, 2,500 tourists in the Indian Casino Hotel.) Since Mahnomen is approximately 250 miles from the Twin Cities, we made arrangements to store the cars we were sure to buy at Uncle Leonard’s, Paul’s brother-in-law. This is a whole ‘nother story, I won’t even get into why Uncle Leonard lives in an area where the Canadian geese outnumber human beings. Off we went with high hopes, pockets of cash and a few car trailers. When we arrived, there must have been 100 car haulers scattered around Dick’s Service. Other people must have heard about it also. But simple math cheered us up; they were auctioning off close to 800 cars, so I figured there were enough cars to go around. I really think there would have been, except Dick seemed intent on buying all his own cars back. Not directly, but it didn’t take too long to figure out he had 4 to 5 people working for him to drive up the price.

One of the two cars we bought at the auction in Mahnomen. The car is strictly for parts. We had to own this car because of the aftermarket sunvisor. Ever seen one of these before?

A 1950 “Submarine.” This car is for future research. The sunvisor is probably worth more than the car itself. Thanks, Dick!

Hand-in-Hand’s Special Extra Feature

Every car was to have a $100 minimum, but you could be the only person out of hundreds interested in a particular automobile and be lucky to touch it for $350. Some auction! I personally let Dick (I have a personal name for him, but can’t mention it) buy back six of his fine automobiles. We had planned on purchasing 13 cars, and were lucky to get two to fill up the trailers. I guess the bright side is that Dick didn’t get all the cash we had brought along. I really don’t think Dick gets the opportunity to make much cash at all the way he operates. Oh, well... National Chevy Assoc. recently became the owner of “Quite a Piece.” Paul has been drooling for a few years over a car he felt he had to own, and we finally acquired it when a Mr. Jim Bulfer of Madison, South Dakota, finally agreed to sell it. How does an eight-door 1954 Chevrolet airport limousine strike you? Until you see it in person, you have no idea how long this thing is. Pictures cannot do it justice. In fact, the length of this automobile is what got us into trouble. The dang thing fit on our 18-foot long trailer bed by about six inches, and the weight distribution was not exactly conducive to safe trailering. I don’t think the tongue weight of the trailer was 100 lbs., because I don’t think we made it a mile before I sincerely thought I was going to die. Paul was doing the driving, and I mean driving, when the trailer decided to go its own way. To this day, I don’t know how he saved it. The tires were squealing, the trailer was waggling, I was praying, and Paul kept steering back and forth. We made it, but had to use a floor jack to put the back end of the limo back onto the trailer. Oh, well.... Do you know how long it takes to come back to Minnesota from South Dakota (250 miles) at 40 mph? More on the limo later, after we learn more about it.

National Chevrolet’s new treasure. If the roof was a little more flat, you could land that airplane on top of it! Yes, we still have this car. It has had some body work done. We need to finish it at some point as our granddaughter has requested it belong to her.

FOR SALE — 1953 Chevy BelAir Convertible. An aging 90% completed restoration and has been stored in a garage since I got it in 1994. I’m selling because I’m inheriting another nearly identical car with sentimental value and would like to open up the space for that car. It hasn’t been started since it was put in storage but it ran fine when we drove it into my garage - the gas tank, fuel lines, and carb have been drained. It has the 235 6-cyl. engine with a 3 on-the-tree standard transmission. The body is straight, the convertible top is in decent condition with new rams and working pump. New carpet and good interior. A little TLC and this is a great drivable car. I’ve been told it’s about a number 2 car. You pick up. $21,900. (402) 391-6372. Omaha, NE.
