Mission Statement: Providing family-oriented Christian homes, on a working ranch for adults who have developmental disabilities.

Vol. 25 No. 2 “Shepherding the Hesitant” December 2013

Friend & Brother in ChristA friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of

adversity. Proverbs 17:17

True friendship is a rare blessing in our lives. It means identifying with someone in thought, heart and spirit. It’s the kind of relationship in which Special K Ranch and I were blessed by knowing Kenny White.

I first met Kenny in the summer of 2001; he and his wife, Sue, were looking into the ranch for possible employment as house parents. They came out to the greenhouse and I gave them a tour of the complex. I remember thinking as they were walking away, “I hope they don’t hire them.” You see, we were in the process of expanding the greenhouse complex and I could tell while talking with Kenny that he was kind of a salesman and didn’t have any experience in construction. I am not sure if it was his portly build and extra-large “Frito Bandito” mustache or maybe it was his Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian print shirt that brought me to that conclusion. I can tell you that I have never been happier that God’s will superseded my own will in bringing Kenny to Special K Ranch. (I wish you could see the smile on my face as I write down these memories.)

Special K Ranch became home for the Whites that summer and the beginning of new lives and true friendships, not only between Kenny and me, but more so between Kenny and the people at Special K Ranch. It didn’t take long for our residents to start showing Kenny what a life in Christ looked like. He quickly caught the vision of God’s Mission at Special K Ranch and the ministry of our residents. The ranch has a way of allowing the soul to heal while the Holy Spirit works on your heart. Early into Kenny’s journey at the ranch he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and became the spiritual leader of his family.

With the help of God and a lot of prayer, Kenny beat a hard fought battle with cancer, but it left his body vulnerable. Kenny passed away from an infection Saturday, November 30. As I look back over the 13 years of our friendship, I have to tell you that my initial assumption of Kenny’s construction skills was spot on. What I did not see at that time was a man who would soon become one of God’s great servants. A man whose service was the overflow that poured from a life filled with love and devotion for Jesus Christ and his fellow man. I see a life filled with the face of Jesus Christ and out of his devotion to Him, service became his way of life. He was the guy who

would do anything he could to help you and I saw him constantly investing his time, money, and energy into people’s lives. Kenny truly became broken bread and poured out wine in the hands of Jesus Christ for the sake of others.

On Sunday morning, the day after Kenny’s ascension to Heaven, Sue White was blessed by the birth of her first grandson. Is that way cool or what? God is good ALL the time.

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the

glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:4

Yes! I still love my job; it brings people into my life like Kenny – Miss you, Brother.

Hope your soul is doing well!

A Way toHelp Others

A will is the simplest form of a planned gift and it affords everyone the opportunity to help others and have a living legacy. Consider naming Special K Ranch in your will for a percentage, a specific amount,

or as the sole benefactor. Special K Ranch could also be named as beneficiary of a tax-deferred IRAor other retirement plan. The blessings you have received will continue to bless and help others.

When updating your will, check with your attorney for the proper legal forms and wording.

This year Ben and Dallas enjoyed helping decorate a Christmas tree at the Moss Mansion as part of the 2013 Holiday Tree Event.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at Special K Ranch! We wish you

a holiday season full of love and joy.

Message from the Program DirectorAs the time grows closer to celebrating our Savior’s birth and another new year ahead,

many of us like to look back over the last 12 months and sum up some of the special events and activities our lives encountered. For me it has been a year of many “firsts.” Even though I have been around the block a few times, there are still many things in this world around me that I have not seen or heard, and many that remain for me to explore and experience. Such a magnitude of life’s opportunities should make us look forward to each new day as one that holds endless possibilities to encounter something new and fascinating.

The Program here at SKR included the familiar, well established opportunities (though “firsts” for me) such as: the Bedding Plant Season; Special Olympics Basketball; Produce Gardening; Summer Market; Livestock Husbandry and 4H Auctions; to name a few. There were also new adventures for everyone to enjoy, like: Fishing for the 300 new Rainbow Trout in the pond; a group raft trip down the Yellowstone River; paintball and how to use the equipment; plus the beginning of our new Equestrian/Therapeutic Horse Program. Life continues to move along in familiar ways, yet with new challenges and changes. It is with great awe inspiring moments from this past year that I can look back and say that God is alive and well and look forward to celebrating His Son’s coming, because His coming was all about “LIFE” and how it can be lived, shared and enjoyed together with our families, friends and communities.

So thank you, everyone, for making so many wonderful opportunities happen for our residents and staff, both old and new. May this December find you well and living a life of wonder because of whom you believe in, and for whom you live. Don’t miss out on the reason for the season.

As many of you may already know, it is the continued vision and goal of the staff here at Special K Ranch to always be striving to improve the quality of life for our ranchers/residents. As part of this ongoing vision, several of the staff have partnered to help build a Therapeutic Horse Program.

As part of this ongoing effort, the ranch has recently been awarded an $1,100 matching grant from the Columbus Community Foundation. The funding will go toward the purchase of panels and sand for our riding arena. This will allow a safe place for our residents to participate in this program. We have recently purchased a new tack shed to hold all of our saddles, riding equipment, grooming supplies, and harnesses, which will be placed next to the riding arena, making it more accessible.

The ranch has also been given a custom horse-drawn wagon with the Special K Logo, along with two new horse harnesses that are on the way. They will be used in many of the parades and events in which we participate. The Equine Therapy aspect of our new program will include games in which the residents will be allowed to interact with the animals from on the ground. It will also encompass staff-assisted riding sessions, which will help them to build balance, to develop both gross and fine motor skills, and

will allow them to have the opportunity to develop positive social and behavioral skills, as well as self-confidence.

We would especially like to take the moment to thank all of the supports who helped to make this program possible. If you would like to become involved with the program or would like general information, please contact Sharon at (406) 322-5520; email [email protected]; if you would like to become a donor to the program, please contact Steve Aadland at (406) 550-2224; email [email protected].

Message from the Development DirectorBut just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love

we have kindled in you – see that you also excel in this grace of giving. 2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV)

A story my mom still tells me: One day, when I was a very little boy, I was picking dandelions to make a bouquet for her. I spotted a few bees on the flowers, became frightened, and ran into the house. I said, “Mom! Mom, there are bees on the flowers I want to pick!” Mom said, “That’s OK, just avoid the bees.” I said, “OK, OK, I will.” I rushed back outside to continue picking. After a short time, still seeing the bees and becoming even more scared, I ran back to the house, scurried through the front door and asked, “Mom,

what does ‘avoid’ mean?”

As we grow, speech, knowledge, earnestness, love, faith, grace and giving flourish in our minds and hearts. We learn these qualities from having good parents and family, supportive friends, and experiencing life. Eventually we decide to teach and provide these good qualities, nurturing them in others, rather than being just recipients of their benefits. Now that I am grown, I’m blessed with the opportunity to give to others, not just as a father, husband and friend, but also as the development director for Special K Ranch. Supporters of the ranch understand that, as these qualities blossom in us, providing for others is what completes the cycle, and the reward for participating in both giving and receiving is priceless.

We would like to give special thanks to our loyal supporters who have built an organization capable of providing permanent, loving and rewarding homes for 31 adults who have developmental disabilities. By providing this support, not only are they making it possible for the ranch to function, but they are also teaching the residents about the joy of giving. For example, one day last month, long-time resident Dallas bought a beverage at the Cenex Zip Trip in Park City. The clerk asked if he wanted to make a donation to the Food Bank as part of his transaction. Without hesitation, he gave a quick smile and said, “Yes!” Furthermore, he didn’t buy the beverage for himself; he gave the drink to his fellow resident, Ben, as a gift.

Thank you, from all of us at the ranch, for teaching and helping us to take part in the everlasting cycle of giving and receiving. Merry Christmas!

Special announcement regarding the Special K Ranch Foundation Endowment: It is our goal to make the ranch as self-sustaining as possible. This year, an extremely generous couple has pledged to match, up to a total of $250,000, all gifts given to the endowment from now until December 31, 2013. If you choose to support the endowment before December 31, your gift will be doubled.

Montana Income Tax Credit for Endowed Philanthropy: Montana residents are eligible for a $10,000 tax credit. This tax credit has been reinstated by the Montana legislature. Planned gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, qualify for this credit. You will receive a credit on your Montana income taxes of 40% of the gifted amount, up to $10,000 per individual and $20,000 per couple. Additionally, you can take advantage of a significant federal tax reduction.

IRA Rollover: Taxpayers who are 70 1/2 or older can transfer as much as $100,000 from an individual retirement account directly to SKR without having to count any of that transfer as taxable income. The transfer counts toward the taxpayer’s required minimum distribution for that year. This opportunity is set to expire at the end of 2013 and may not be renewed by the federal government.

There’s still time to make a gift in 2013!

Rob won gold and Jeremy won bronze at the Special Olympics Montana Sate Basketball Tournament.

Last August, the SKR pond was stocked with 300 Rainbow Trout.

As expected, Hank cought the first fish.

Consider a gift-in-kindAdministrative VehiclesSeveral delivery and administrative vehicles on the ranch must be replaced. We rely on the delivery vehicles to transport livestock and to deliver SKR flowers and produce to vendors around the state. The administrative vehicles are used for miscellaneous transportation of residents and for shopping and errands. Many of these vehicles have accumulated more than 250,000 miles. They need extremely frequent repair and will soon be beyond repair. Your consideration of making a vehicle donation is greatly appreciated. Towing vehicles, such as full-size diesel pickups, and mini vans are most needed.

Marvin Schieldt, Program Director

Memorials and Honorariums July 1, 2013 - november 15, 2013We are pleased that the people memorialized and honored on these pages are part of the ongoing ministry of special K ranch.

Marvin Schieldt

Vol.

Mike

A Way toHelp Others

A will is the simplest form of a planned gift and it affords everyone the opportunity to help others and have a living legacy. Consider naming Special K Ranch in your will for a percentage, a specific amount,

or as the sole benefactor. Special K Ranch could also be named as beneficiary of a tax-deferred IRAor other retirement plan. The blessings you have received will continue to bless and help others.

When updating your will, check with your attorney for the proper legal forms and wording.

Mike

A Way toHelp Others

A will is the simplest form of a planned gift and it affords everyone the opportunity to help others and have a living legacy. Consider naming Special K Ranch in your will for a percentage, a specific amount,

or as the sole benefactor. Special K Ranch could also be named as beneficiary of a tax-deferred IRAor other retirement plan. The blessings you have received will continue to bless and help others.

When updating your will, check with your attorney for the proper legal forms and wording.
