Vol. 17, No. 4 April 1, 2015 Introducing Worship, Grow, Live! The Lord has placed Trinity in a very strategic location in the heart of one of the fastest growing and largest cities in the United States. There is an immense opportunity to touch people’s hearts and lives with God’s love. Trinity’s mission statement reminds us of the responsibility and urgency we have with this opportunity: “Joyfully sharing Christ’s saving love will all people, Now!” In order to position the congregation to address the opportunity before us, the Governing Board and Staff have been working closely with a well-known strategy consultant to re-imagine how we can creatively apply our mission statement, given today’s exciting opportunities, so we can accomplish what God has placed us here to do. Recently, three guiding words were adopted to define the mission. These words are: Worship, Grow and Live. You will hear more about these words and the direction of our ministry together in a sermon series by Pastor Dorn beginning the Sunday after Easter. As we begin to implement Worship, Grow, Live, these changes are on the horizon: The worship schedule will be modified to allow for a dedicated hour when the whole congregation (all ages!) can participate in Bible study. The congregation will be strongly encouraged to invest at least two hours each week in corporate worship and Bible study. A wider variety of adult Bible studies will be offered each week beginning in the fall. The Sunday School curriculum is being evaluated so that Trinity can provide an engaging time in the Word with the children. Trinity will be providing tools and training to help members of all ages develop their personal devotional life in order to deepen their relationship with God. The new member process will be revamped to more effectively integrate people who want to join the congregation in our mission. The goal is that through worship and Bible study our members will be better equipped to engage the world with the Good News. Introducing Worship, Grow, Live! The Lord has placed Trinity in a very strategic location in the heart of one of

the fastest growing and largest cities in the United States. There is an immense opportunity to touch people’s hearts and lives with God’s love. Trinity’s mission statement reminds us of the responsibility and urgency we have with this opportunity: “Joyfully sharing Christ’s saving love will all people, Now!”

In order to position the congregation to address the opportunity before us, the Governing Board and Staff have been working closely with a well-known strategy consultant to re-imagine how we can creatively apply our mission statement, given today’s exciting opportunities, so we can accomplish what God has placed us here to do.

Recently, three guiding words were adopted to define the mission. These words are: Worship, Grow and Live. You will hear more about these words and the direction of our ministry together in a sermon series by Pastor Dorn beginning the Sunday after Easter.

As we begin to implement Worship, Grow, Live, these changes are on the horizon:

• The worship schedule will be modified to allow for a dedicated hour when the whole congregation (all ages!) can participate in Bible study.

• The congregation will be strongly encouraged to invest at least two hours each week in corporate worship and Bible study.

• A wider variety of adult Bible studies will be offered each week beginning in the fall.

• The Sunday School curriculum is being evaluated so that Trinity can provide an engaging time in the Word with the children.

• Trinity will be providing tools and training to help members of all ages develop their personal devotional life in order to deepen their relationship with God.

• The new member process will be revamped to more effectively integrate people who want to join the congregation in our mission.

• The goal is that through worship and Bible study our members will be better equipped to engage the world with the Good News.

In addition to the sermon series which begins on April 12th, Pastor Dorn will have a Senior Pastor Roundtable meeting to provide additional information and allow for questions and feedback. The Roundtable will be on April 26th at Noon.

Five Great Blessings to Thank God For!We praise the LORD for how He is strengthening the ministries of

Trinity with His many blessings in our Savior Jesus Christ. Five of His great blessings are:

¾ The 2015 February School Gala was a great success raising over $55,000 in funds to support and strengthen Trinity’s School Ministries. The net amount raised this year was almost $20,000 more than at last year’s Gala.

¾ The school and Early Childhood Ministries are being unanimously recommended for reaccreditation by the evaluation team that was on site at the beginning of March. We are evaluated every five years for accreditation.

¾ The numbers of people participating and attending all our Worship Services is increasing. There has been a steady upward trend over the last six months. We are regularly over 500 in Worship among our three services each Sunday and growing.

¾ Our Tithes and Offerings are higher than they have ever been. This is particularly amazing when comparing the numbers with higher worship attendance a few years ago.

¾ Trinity Downtown was ranked 14th of 6,136 congregations in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod in reaching Adults with 51 Adult Confirmations (or Professions of Faith) in 2013. See the chart from the January – February 2015 issue of The Lutheran Layman.

¾ The Bells of our Carillon are being refurbished and renewed to serve Trinity and the City of Houston with beautiful music for decades to come.

These five great blessings speak to the heart of our congregation and to the health and strength of our ministries that our God and Father has given us in Christ Jesus.

While we have many challenges before us, we can take heart that our Lord Jesus is guiding and leading and using us for His glory through sharing His saving love with all people now.

Thank you for being part of God’s many blessings! Please share the “good news” of God’s blessings with each other and with your friends and neighbors.

Praise the LORD!

Mighty Acts Easter ResponseOne generation shall declare Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts. Psalm 145:4

If you were asked to make a list of “God’s mighty acts,” what would you include on your list? You might start a mental journey beginning in Genesis and traveling chronologically through Scripture, listing things as you go. Possibly two or three favorite Bible stories or personal situations may come to mind. Either way, your list would likely go on and on. At the top of everyone’s list would be God’s amazing act of salvation for the whole world through His Son’s death and resurrection which we celebrate so joyfully during this Easter season.

Now, how about another couple of lists. In what ways do you or can you personally declare God’s mighty acts? What are the ways that we as Trinity congregation declare God’s mighty acts? How long would those lists be?

We know that God is faithful to us. (For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:5) So what is our faith response? While God has entrusted us with much responsibility, at the same time He provides us with the means to carry out those responsibilities. (But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57) Trinity congregation is an active force, joyfully moving forward to spread the Gospel and meet the changing needs of this world, while remaining firmly rooted in God’s unchanging Word.

As we celebrate this jubilant Easter season, we are challenged to fulfill the items on our lists with renewed purpose. One important opportunity before us both as individuals and together as a congregation is the current Mighty Acts capital campaign, which is a critical way to support and expand our mission of Joyfully Sharing Christ’s Saving Love with All People Now! We have already seen early visible results in our new sanctuary projection system and begun the repair and upgrade of our historic carillon. Our six-month goal for this campaign is to reach $400,000 by May. We thank you for your ongoing efforts to meet your commitments, and for those who were unable to make a commitment at this time, please consider gifts to this campaign as you are able. Please continue to pray for the success of the Mighty Acts campaign. We can’t wait to celebrate the first six-month milestone in May!

Trinity Prays!God bless you and all your prayers with the peace and

power of Christ’s resurrection! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Along with your regular prayers for all who are on your prayer list, this month I have only a few suggestions to add:

Pray for the joy of Jesus to be strong in our hearts. Pray for the peace of Jesus to be strong in our hearts. Pray for the power of Jesus to be strong in our hearts. Pray for the grace of Jesus to be strong in our hearts.

That’s it: Joy! Peace! Power! and Grace! All in Jesus!May the joy, peace, power and grace of Christ Jesus’ resurrection fill you and bless you in who you are as

a child of our heavenly Father and in all you do as a brother or sister of our Lord! May Jesus be strong in you always! Amen.

Thanks for your prayers and thanks for being such faithful prayer warriors!

Trinity Lutheran School Endowment FundFor more than 135 years, Trinity Lutheran School has provided

a Christ-centered education for thousands of students. From its beginning, the school has been driven by a commitment to the Gospel, focused on leading its students to faith in Christ, providing a firm academic foundation as well as a Scriptural basis for living. Lutheran school education is a special gift we can provide to children from both within and outside of our congregation.

HISTORYThe Trinity Lutheran School Endowment Fund was born out

of a passion to support the school in its mission of inspiring and empowering students and to help make this opportunity available to as many students as possible.

The TLS Endowment Fund was established in 1999 and is a qualified 501(c)(3) charitable institution. Annual distributions began in 2006 and total more than $140,000 through 2013, including $25,100 last year and $20,000 or more each of the previous three years. Thanks to the ongoing support for the fund, we anticipate that the next distribution will continue this upward trend. Distributions are based on the dividend income earned by the fund each year, plus a small portion of the gifts received during that period. To date, approximately 85% of distributions have been used by the school for financial assistance to students who might otherwise not have access to the school, with the remaining 15% funding other critical classroom needs. We were also proud to support the school’s needs at the recent school gala with an additional $5,000 sponsorship.

FUNDING OPTIONS There are multiple ways to contribute to the Fund. Current Giving: Current cash gifts may be made by indicating

School Endowment on the offering envelope found in the pew pocket, or mailing a check to the church using the notation Trinity Lutheran School Endowment Fund.

Future Giving: A variety of other options are available, including Bequest, Charitable Gift Annuity, Securities, Charitable Remainder Unitrust, or an IRA or Life Insurance Beneficiary Designation.

For more information on the Endowment, or any of these funding options, please contact any TLS Endowment Board member, or Roseann Gamez in the church office. Current board members include Dave Bohmbach, Delynda Cruz, Lori Fischer, Dave Frederking, Mary Jeter, Ruanne Kuhlmann, Tim Lewis, Steve Porter and Steven Roesel, with Natalia Junkans as ex officio member.

ANNUAL BARBECUE

Once again this year the school Endowment Board will be hosting a barbecue on Sunday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with barbecue provided bythe Holy Smokers. (If you’ve never had this barbecue before, you are in for a serious treat!) This is the same weekend as the Trinity Lutheran School musical, making it easy to attend both. A freewill offering will be taken, with proceeds supporting the TLS Endowment Fund. This is a fun time with great food, so please mark your calendars!

As always, Steven Roesel has revealed that there might be some meat left over. If that is the case, we will be selling half briskets for a minimum of $40 and whole for a minimum of $80. The briskets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. So inquire with Steven Roesel in the pit area at the end of the serving time to see what’s left!

Redesign of New Member ClassTrinity’s Faith Discovery New Member Class is being redesigned at this time to come

into alignment with our congregational theme of Worship! Grow! Live! The next New Member Class will be offered right after Labor Day, starting on Sunday, September 13th. We are excited about this new design and how we will be able to more effectively connect with one another in Christ and move forward together in mission and ministry! To God be all the glory!

Prayers and Promises by Pastor David Leeland

A Blessed, Happy and Joyful Easter to you! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!Jesus has suffered death on behalf of all humanity. He suffered death for you and me! Jesus did this to

take away sin and sorrow and sickness and all that separates all of us from our heavenly Father. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life! He gives each one of us new life in our Baptisms and gifts us with the full forgiveness of all of our sins bought and paid for with His precious blood shed on the cross. And, He gifts us with His Holy Spirit so that we can believe and trust and have faith in Him always.

The eternal and everlasting truth and power of Christ’s resurrection hits home for us every time one of our loved ones passes from this life through the door of death into the loving arms of our Savior in heaven and into the love and light and life of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the face of the finality of death, Jesus speaks His all-powerful word of life: 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die.” [John 11:25 ESV]

My wife’s elderly uncle, Earl, died recently at the age of 91½. He outlived all of his immediate family. This is kind of ironic. Earl had a serious illness back when he was 12 and everyone thought he would die young. Instead, he spent the next 80 years trying and finally did 6 months before his 92nd birthday!

Earl and my father-in-law, Eddie, were extremely close growing up in the Depression and developed bonds of family and friendship that were as tight and as close as any two brothers could be. In a way, Earl’s passing has brought back up a lot of the memories and feelings that we had when Eddie passed on to Jesus.

So to all of us who grieve and mourn or who long for one who had gone on before us from earth to heaven, Jesus speaks these words of comfort. How do you need to hear them? Jesus will whisper them, He will go all the way from a still small voice to a shout and the command of the archangel and the trumpet call of God and the dead in Christ shall rise!

It’s amazing how we can move from Jesus’ resurrection all the way to ours on His Last and Great Day of His Second Coming!

In the meantime, we are people of the Resurrection and Life! We are Jesus’ people who live with His presence and power and peace within us! We are people claimed by Christ, living for our heavenly Father’s glory through the power of His Holy Spirit! And, we live to share the saving love of Jesus with all people now!

God bless you and keep you in the presence, power and peace of Jesus always! Amen.Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Trinity Lutheran School...Downtown“Inspiring and empowering students with a Christ-centered education since 1879.”

From the Principal’s DeskDear Trinity Family,It is always a pleasure to write to update you on what is happening at Trinity Lutheran

School. Last month I wrote to tell you that we would have our Accreditation Visit. Every 5-7 years the school conducts a Self-Study Report to present to the Visiting Team. The Visiting Team observed our school for four days and reviewed our curriculum, policies and procedures, visited the classes, and talked to teachers and pastors to validate the Self-Study Report.

I am very pleased to inform you that the Visiting Team unanimously agreed to recommend TLS be accredited by the National Lutheran School Association (NLSA). The NLSA Commission will meet later this summer to affirm their recommendation. This is such wonderful news! We give God the glory and thanksgiving for His blessing upon our school.

A highlight from the report included the following statement from the Visiting Team. “It is obvious that Trinity Lutheran School is an excellent school. This was reflected not only in the self-study but also in the observations of the Visiting Team. We were delighted with the whole climate of Trinity. The school speaks out for the Christian faith to the students and to the community very effectively.”

We could not be more proud of our teachers, staff, and pastors who make our school a wonderful place for children to grow spiritually and academically. Continue to keep us in your prayers as we strive to inspire and empower students with a Christ-centered education.

In Christ,Natalia S. Junkans, Principal

Trinity Lutheran School Named as Finalist for 2015 Greater Houston Service Awards

Our pride is showing! Volunteer Houston has announced that Trinity Lutheran School is one of three finalists in the Group Division for the Greater Houston Service Awards to be held on May 15th, at the Bayou City Event Center at 12 noon, with a VIP Reception starting at 11:45. TLS will be represented at both events by both students, staff and parents. The invocation, for over 600 people in attendance, will be delivered by our very own, Pastor Michael Dorn.

Trinity Lutheran School was nominated for their outstanding involvement and impact on the St. Nicholas Project, which impacted over 7,000 students in the city of Houston.

Co-Chairs of this event are Dr. Bill Flores and Dr. Bezette-Flores, President of the University of Houston Downtown, and Executive Director CPSFS of UHD, respectively. Additionally, to be honored and receiving the 2015 Impact Award, will be Mr. Neil Bush, who will honor all finalists at both the VIP Reception, and the luncheon itself.

Mr. Bush has worked tirelessly advocating for the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, and the Points of Light Foundation, celebrating its 25th anniversary.

We are proud to be among the over 42,000 volunteers that have contributed to so many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others!

For more information, or if you are interested in purchasing a ticket to support our students at the event, please contact Lisa Jakel at [email protected].

Congratulations, TLS students! WE ARE PROUD TO CALL YOU OUR OWN!

It’s Dr. Seuss Time—My Favorite Time of the Year!!! Each year I coordinate Dr. Seuss Day for K-4th grade where the kids are rotated through six different “Seuss

Stations.” Each station is assigned a book that goes with the activity and each teacher reads the book before they begin the activity. Examples are feet painting, Sneetch ball, Oobleck, Seuss snack and Seuss instruments. During the month leading up to Dr. Seuss Day, 4th graders become authors and illustrators of their own Seuss-like book. This story is then written in a hard bound book and displayed as well as read during the week of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. ~~Antoinette Latham

TLS Students Conquer Outer Space Right Here on Houston Avenue!

TLS Kindergarten through eighth grade students were blessed on March 10 to attend a very enlightening lecture given by Mr. James Taylor, Safety and Testing Division of NASA. Along with artifacts from space, such as an astronaut’s glove and helmet, space food and a flight suit, students were treated to watch informative NASA videos that detailed the launch and recovery of space vehicles.

As an engineer and safety specialist, Mr. Taylor shared in two separate sessions the many occupational options that students can explore to enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers (STEM). He emphasized the importance of earning a well-rounded education like that of

past graduates of TLS. In doing so, he helped the students to connect classroom instruction resulting in good grades to the world of work. By freely answering the students’ many questions, Mr. Taylor was able to show how student lessons today can lead to real world career opportunities at NASA in the very near future.

As he stated, “One day I will retire and I will need you to come take my place.” The students took his call to action seriously and continued conversations about his visit in the form of drawings, the creation of Lego space shuttles and teacher inquiries.

TLS wants to thank Mr. Taylor for his gift of talent, time and materials given to the school. By bravely navigating the downtown traffic for a few moments in time, he has deeply enriched the lives of our students and sparked the reality of career possibilities in our students that could lead to a lifetime of STEM exploration. TLS cannot thank Mr. Taylor and his administration enough for this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

TLS Spring MusicalTake a trip to Sweet Apple, Ohio, circa 1958…where the town is turned upside

down when a local girl, Kim MacAfee, is selected to get that ‘One Last Kiss’ from world-famous teen idol Conrad Birdie before he goes into the army. The talented actors, singers and dancers of Trinity School will present the 11th Annual Spring Musical, BYE BYE BIRDIE on May 1st and 2nd at 7:30 p.m. and May 3rd at 2:30 p.m. in the Mary Martha Fellowship Hall. An old-fashioned Malt Shop will offer tasty treats during intermission, with pre-show appetizers (and red carpet treatment!) reserved exclusively for our STARGAZERS members. To find out more about STARGAZERS, and how you can obtain front row seats for the musical, please contact the Middle School office (713.224.7265.) General Admission tickets are $5.00 and can be reserved through the school office or purchased at the door.

Trinity has established a fine musical tradition and this year’s cast is working extra hard to make our Birdie fly! All they ask for in return is a full house to appreciate all of their efforts!

However, there is more thing that you can do. If you’re handy with a brush (make-up or paint!), sewing machine, a computer, or hammer, and wish to become part of the wonderful world of theatre, there’s a job awaiting you! Please contact Victoria Harkrider 713.459.3174 or [email protected] and she will gladly put you to work!

Communion PrayersFor over a year, you’ve seen Stephen Ministers standing off to the side

during communion distribution at all the services. The pastors announce that they are available to pray with you, but maybe you are nervous about taking advantage of this powerful ministry because you don’t want others to know. Let me assure you that all prayers are 100% confidential. Confidentiality is a key component of everything that Stephen Ministry stands for! We have been specifically trained and equipped to actively listen, to care for others, and to remain quiet about it! The only three people who will ever know what you asked for in prayer are you, the Stephen Minister who prays for you, and God!

Or maybe you are thinking that you don’t need to pray with a Stephen Minister because your life is going smoothly at the moment. Although the primary role of Stephen Ministers is to walk alongside someone who is hurting and to offer one-on-one confidential, distinctively Christian care, when we stand in front of the church to pray, our focus shifts to caring in a larger sense. We are there to support the members and guests of Trinity by lifting up prayers of all kinds! Certainly we will lift up your petitions where God’s care, provision, and healing are required, but we are also available to give shouts of thanksgiving and praise for the wonderful things that He has done in your life or in the lives of others. It can be as simple as thanking God for getting you out of bed in the morning! In chapter 5 of the book of James, we are reminded, “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with the oil of the Lord.” (Verses 13-15).

Whatever is on your heart is perfect to ask the Stephen Ministers to lift up in prayer!Specific names/details of the situation are not at all required! Thankfully our God is so awesome that “He

knows what you need before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8 NIV), so you can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable. Stephen Ministers are trained in active listening, so the more you share, the more specifically we can target our prayer, but even if you share something like “I’d like to pray for my friend,” or “ I’d like to praise God for His goodness” we can still craft a prayer that God will hear and understand because He is all knowing!

Perhaps you don’t take advantage of the prayer of a Stephen Minister because you are already praying privately. Of course God hears all of our prayers, whether we are alone, with another person, or with 700 other worshippers on a Sunday morning, but there is something incredibly powerful about praying with another person. Matthew 18:20 reminds us “For where two or three come together in My name, there am I with them.” What an awesome privilege it is to have our Heavenly Father come into our midst just by joining another person in prayer! Sometimes in my private prayer, I feel like I don’t have the words to express myself to God, and yet when I go to ask for prayer from a Stephen Minister at communion, God gives them the perfect words to minister to me!

I challenge each of you to take advantage of this incredible ministry of prayer offered during communion. Just try it once during the month of April and see how your life is blessed, encouraged and revitalized!

Krystle Marcis, Stephen Minister

Great Marriage! Class Starts April 16th!Great Marriage! Trinity’s Pre-Marriage Preparation and Marriage

Enrichment Class starts Thursday, April 16th, from 6 to 9 p.m., in Room 124 and meets for six sessions.

April 16th (6 – 9 p.m.) May 7th (6 – 9 p.m.)April 23rd (6 – 9 p.m.) May 14th (6 – 9 p.m.)April 30th (6 – 9 p.m.) May 21st (6 – 9 p.m.)Please contact Pastor David Leeland to register for Great Marriage!

by e-mail: [email protected] or by telephone: 713.224.0684.What are the ingredients essential to a Great Marriage? Research gives seven ingredients to a growing

Great Marriage. This means that when couples are growing in these areas their marriage is great and becoming even greater (deeper, stronger, better, fabulous and fantastic)!

¾ Growing in friendship (BFF) – You start out as friends and lovers and over time become better and better friends till you are each other’s best friend and ultimately Best Friends Forever.

¾ Having more and more fun – You start out making fun an art form, so don’t lose sight of how important it is to enjoy each other, to play together, relax together, explore life together, and share the wonder and the beauty of life together.

¾ Learning to manage stuff – When we date and relate, we put reality on the back burner. When we get married, reality comes rushing in. In a Great Marriage we learn to manage the stuff of life to keep it from overrunning us or crowding out our friendship and fun together.

¾ Earning your BA, MS, PhD, and Continuing Education in each other – It takes time and energy to really get to know each other enough to get married. When we get married, the clock starts over and we not only have to get to know each other all over again, we need to keep learning from each other, about each other, and delight in each other as we learn and affirm and celebrate who we are together.

¾ Moving from ME -> WE – This is about your attitude, where your heart and mind are focused. Instead of thinking ME, you’re thinking WE. Instead of feeling ME, you’re feeling We. Instead of being all about yourself, you’re wanting WE. And, you’re connecting with each other, facing life with all of your talents and strengths and abilities together. You say, “We’re a team! We’re in this together!” And, you keep on continually connecting together despite all the pressures that the world sends your way to pull the two of you apart.

¾ Learn to say “I love you!” in your spouse’s love language. – We usually express love in the way we want to receive it with the assumption that our spouse wants to be loved exactly the way we do. We need to learn each other’s love language and then become fluent in speaking, saying, doing, sharing and expressing love to each other in that language. You can go to www.5lovelanguages.com to take the online quiz or better yet, pick up a copy of Gary Chapman’s book, The Five Love Languages, to deepen your ability to share and express love to each other.

¾ Celebrating and developing the one-flesh union of your marriage – Your marriage is uniquely yours in how you live out your one-flesh union: One-flesh in your bodies, one-flesh in the sharing of your hearts and minds, one-flesh in your worship and devotion to the Lord, one-flesh in the use of all your resources and finances, one-flesh in your service to God and how you make a difference in our world. Though one might be doing one thing and the other something different, yet you are with each other in all these things because of the one-flesh union of your marriage.

[Jesus said,] 4 “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” [Matthew 19:4-6; ESV]

May yours be a Great Marriage filled with the abundant blessings of love and grace from our Lord Jesus Christ. To God be all the glory!

Keep Your Joints Healthy – 5 Steps for Protecting Your JointsMost of us, including ME, know this information. The problem is that we may

not practice this, and I unfortunately, must admit that some of these suggestions are NOT part of my daily/weekly routine. After reading and posting this information,

I am going to make a very concerted effort to begin to follow these steps over a period of time. I also realize that many of us have painful joint, spine or other conditions that may prevent us from following through with these suggestions. If that’s the case, then check with your physician about what you might do to protect/strengthen your joints. In fact, before any of you begin to follow these suggestions, check with your physician, especially if you have cardiovascular or lung health issues.

“When we’re young, we take our joints for granted – running and jumping with wild abandon.” It’s not until we’re older (I can attest to that) or that we have an orthopedic injury that we truly realize what our joints do for us, and why we must take efforts to protect them. Dr. Mark Maffet, orthopedic sports medicine specialist with Houston Methodist Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

He suggests five (5) smart tips to keep your joints healthy:1. “MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Every extra pound puts four times the stress on your knees, but

even a small amount of weight loss will give your knees relief, says the Arthritis Foundation.”2. GET REGULAR AEROBIC EXERCISE, especially low-impact aerobic activities, such as bike

riding, swimming or elliptical machines. Dr. Maffet stated that “these types of exercise will preserve the joints and the muscles around them and that he has seen elderly people whose muscles, bones and joints are years younger than their age due to regular exercise.”

3. INCLUDE STRETCHING TO STAY LIMBER. This helps to prevent tight muscles, which exert extra force on joints and limit range of motion.

4. ADD WEIGHT-BEARING EXERCISES to keep bones strong. These include weight lifting, as well as aerobic activities in which you must support your own weight, like running, skiing, soccer, rock climbing, or jumping rope. (These would pose a great challenge for me).

5. TAKE CARE OF YOUR JOINTS NOW. Dr. Maffet stated “prevention starts at a young age. Athletes need to remember that their muscles, bones and joints must last their lifetime. If injured, seek treatment as soon as possible.”

Time for TeaOn Sunday, February

15, approximately 50 Trinity members and guests gathered together over varied tea selections, coffee, and sweet and savory refreshments to get to know each other a little better. The annual tea, hosted by the PEP Club, also included piano music by Joe Kapusta and a sing-along from the ‘60s and 70’s led by Mary Mountford, ending with an enthusiastic Bunny-Hop line dance. As guests switched from table to table, the discussions touched on early Trinity memories to health care options, occupations, gardening, neighborhoods, and everything in between.

If you missed this gathering, there will be another chance as the PEP Club hosts a Games Party in May. If you’re interested, pull a game from your closet (cards, dominos, board games) plus instruction sheets for those who may be unfamiliar with the rules, and plan to enjoy the fellowship of Trinity members. More details will be forthcoming in next month’s newsletter.

The New LSS“LSS must become more

focused and strategic, and our programs need to work together as an integrated system, not a collection of independent operating units.

“The driving force behind these changes is simply our new mission and vision.

“MISSION: To break the cycle of child abuse by empowering children, families and communities.

“VISION: Guided by faith, education and action, communities will be free of child abuse.

“We will accomplish this through a continuum of services and community partnerships, each tracking progress against markers of safety, life skills, education, health, and vocation, all of which are critical to breaking the cycle of child abuse. We recognize that children enter the system at different stages of their lives and due to varying life events. Because the types of abuse vary among children, we are committed to addressing the entire spectrum. “

‘An Engaging Thought on Aging’“I can choose to be a grumpy grouch. I can choose to wilt and then wither away. I can choose to lament and

languish. I can choose to grow older with all the kickin’ and screamin’ that’s left in me, until the zest for living melts into a listless pile of sludge and I become a sorry spectacle of what used to be and could have been. Pain is inevitable but misery is a choice.

“Or . . . I can choose to age with a gentle heart. Alive in the Spirit of the living God, full of His grace in Jesus Christ, with the power of God still at work in me regardless of my advancing years.

“The Psalmist said it so simply and so well, ‘The righteous flourish like a palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord. They flourish in the courts of our God. They will bring forth fruit in old age. They are ever full of sap and green.’ (Psalm 92: 12 -14 RSV)

A Life Quote for the Church Year –April 12 – Second Sunday of Easter

“Believing and having “life in His name” is the purpose of John’s Gospel (John 20: 31). God wants everyone to have this life. His Son gave His life for the sins of the entire world (I John 2:2). This bestows value on every human life – born or unborn, residing in a nursing home or in a Petri dish. God wants them all to have life! Prayer: Father, help me value every life and give witness to each of “life in His name.” Amen.”

This “Life Quote” is from Lutherans For Life – www.lutheransforlife.org

Lutheran High School Jubilate to Perform at TrinityOn Sunday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m.

the Jubilate Choir from Lutheran High School will present a concert at Trinity. Lutheran High School is located in Parker, Colorado, a suburb of Denver. The Jubilate Choir is one of the two choirs that the high school features and is a 14-voice, select ensemble. They travel throughout the state of Colorado and the country sharing God’s gift of music with audiences of all ages.

The Jubilate Choir was formed in January of 2012 as the school’s first auditioned ensemble. Since its inception, the group has performed for church services, community events, concerts, the CHSAA Vocal Music Gala, CHSAA music festivals, and other events. This past January, the Jubilate Choir made its first appearance at the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference as one of the selected performing ensembles.

The repertoire for the concert will feature a variety of music from different eras, composers, and genres and will feature a number of the songs performed at this year’s Colorado Music Educators Conference.
