EDITORIAL

Did you know that this seemingly endless

winter darkness will pass soon? Every day

the light time (can not say sun light becau-

se of all the clouds) increases approxima-

tely 2 minutes? That means about 10 minu-

tes a week! Summer is close by!

The heaps of snow or as we Finns call it hanki,

brings some light to the dark afternoons and

evenings when tired students crawl back

home from school. To keep yourself energized

and motivated, try out the many free time ac-

tivities winter has to offer. In this issue we list

several of them in the main article. Skinny dip

in the ice cold water and you’ll be a true Finn!

Energy is movement, both the body and mind,

and to elevate that try sticking to a rhythm of

sleeping, studying and free time. In just few

weeks you’ll notice the difference for sure. For

other kind of rhythms go check out Deeproit’s

events in Coffee House in the center of Kouvola.

They play really good techno and house there

from time to time.

For me this is the last semester and graduation

is ahead for many of us; what to do after that

besides enjoying the summer we’ll be having

then? We interviewed Anastasia Dzgoeva and

she told us her plans for the future. Hopefully

it’ll get you thinking about your future dreams

as well. Believe in yourself and prosper!

If you think that there is nothing interesting

going on in Kouvola, look closer. There are a lot

of talented people who make this town shine

brighter. Now I am talking about Deeptroit - a

group of three young DJs: Anselmi Kuusisto,

Ivan Pennonen, Daniil Spirin. They don‘t cha-

se after money or fame; they are doing it for

themselves. Even if one person likes it or gets

inspired by Deeptroit‘s music, they are glad,

guys feel they do it right.

Despite the fact that they are all different and

come from different countries, they make a gre-

at team and men understand each other in ever-

ything. This with a combination of endless love

to music is a secret key for their good material.

Deeptroit‘s main genres are house and techno

but these guys can play anything, it depends on

audience and mood. They prefer to play on small

stages like our Kouvola‘s Coffee House with ma-

gic atmosphere and friendly people. Big festivals

that are all about money are not their thing. Ho-

wever, you can meet them outside Kouvola, in

neighbouring towns. Bringing Deeptroit further

out of Kouvola‘s frames is in the DJs‘ plans.

Also guys stick to their main resolution - to play

better music. Deeptroit has many years ahead to

improve their performance as for now they can

be considered as young collective, soon they

are turning three years, they are going to play a

festive set. Everybody is invited!

Finnish people have gotten a lot

of those skeptical faces when they

have told about winter sports in Fin-

land. Escaping the winter to insi-

de is an option of course, but what

could be better than enjoying the

short winter period outside with

your friends and family. Year by

year winter seems shorter, because

of the climate change and in some

point snow can be just a memory.

Ice hockey is number one sport in

Finland. Finnish people seem to be

very proud of their national team so

as their own local teams.Every city

has at least one ice hockey hall, and

AN ICY DIP, INTO THE LAKE

loads of frozen areas around the city to skate at.

Ski jumping, cross-country skiing… What else?

Oh, snowboarding and alpine skiing. Actually

you don’t have to go far even for these activi-

ties. Mielakka in Kouvola may not be like the

Alps, but still gives the feel. More info about our

local ski Resort you find from www.mielakka.fi

And for people who want to try extremely

Finnish sports: winter swimming is one of the

most popular wild hobby here. Basically, you

take a refreshing dip in icy water. Outside

or inside, a hole in the ice really does well. It

sounds crazy and it is, but let’s just put it this

way. If you haven’t done it, you have missed

the deepest part of our culture.

One of the most popular things is to mix sum-

mer sports to winter weather, so

every year the Finns organize events

like “Snow football/ floor ball”. There

is no translation for the word Hanki,

but it means a huge amount of snow

on the ground, and in these events

Hanki is known as the playground.

Last but not least, Pulkkamäki,

also known as Sled Hill. For this,

only thing you need to do is to

find a big hill and slide it down.

For coming down, you need so-

mething like Pulkka or just a big

piece of cardboard under your butt.

This winter, when the snow is piled

high outside your doorway, or in the

mountains nearby, you could head

out into the cold and build a snow-

Arena every Wednesday from 12.45 till 13.30.

man or have an epic snowball fight. Those are some usual winter tradi-

tions, yet when the temperature drops, there’s so much more you can do.

What do you get when you combine downhill skiing with skydiving? Speed

flying. In one of the most extreme sports ever invented, a person is dropped off

— typically by helicopter — on top of a mountain where he or she then skis/

flies down. Riders can reach speeds of almost 100 miles an hour when they

fly down crags like Mont Blanc, the highest point in the Alps at 15,800 feet.

Instead of sledding down snowy hills this year, slip into a freshly wa-

xed kayak and enjoy an exciting new twist on traditional sledding. The

kayak works like a sled, but the paddle allows for more control — and

the wax will have you shooting down slopes at incredibly high speeds.

Because snow kayaking is considered an extreme sport, few ski re-

sorts allow it; however there are professional competitions that in-

volve bumps, turns and all sorts of adrenaline-pumping obstacles,

which makes watching the sport almost as much fun as doing it.

If you want to experience the thrill of snowboarding without actually fas-

tening a board to your feet, then you might want

to try snowscooting. Snowscoots are similar to

ski bikes, but are more snowboard-inspired in

their design. The sport is very popular in Finland,

France and is just now catching on in America.

In case you have a dog or a horse you can try

skijoring. It is a winter sport where a person on

skis is pulled by a horse, a dog or a motor vehicle.

It is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring

meaning ski driving. In Lapland there are com-

petitions where a reindeer is pulling a skier!

Finally, no matter what kind of winter sport you

choose, we wish you to have fun and enjoy Fin-

nish Winter!

PROFILE:ANASTASIA DZGOEVA

Text: Diana Kamaletdinova, Photo:Anastasia DzgoevaCan you tell us about yourself?

My name is Anastasia, I am 22. I was born and grown up

in St. Petersburg. There I got my first education in a field

of graphic design at Art College named after Nikolas Roe-

rich. As the graduation day was coming I started thinking

about my future and that is where the idea of studying

in Finland came to my mind. Though before applying to

Kyamk I spent one year in St. Petersburg State University

of Technology and Design also studying graphic design.

Now I am studying in Finland for almost 3 years and that

is the best thing that ever happened to me. Though de-

sign is not the only passion I have. I am also a crazy fan of

winter, snowboarding and good music :)

Why have you decided to open your own design studio?

For my thesis in Art College I decided to create a corporate

identity for a design studio. On the day of graduation I

was asked why have I chosen that theme. I said that one

day I will open my own studio. „Oh, sure!“ - They said

sarcastically and didn‘t believe me. It‘s been 4 years since

then and soon I am going to celebrate 1-year birthday of

my company - It was my dream and I fulfilled it. Since the

day when I saw my name in the list of Kyamk students I

realized that nothing is impossible and how amazing it is

to let your dreams come true.

What are your future plans?

I never hoped to make a brilliant career and to work wor-

ldwide. I just want to create a high quality design that

works. Though it is very tough to „stay alive“ on Finnish

market, especially in Kouvola. Therefore my plans for the

next 5 years is to spread my client base all over Finland

and Russia, maybe rent an office and hire some personnel.

What are the companies that you work with?

During this year I had several clients, the biggest one’s

were Loma Cafe-Bar here in Kouvola, Kyamk and two res-

taurants in St. Petersburg. My job is very unstable. You may

have a client today, and the next day/month/year sit around

and blow the dust off your computer. You never know, how

it will go tomorrow. It is a risk, but when you are in love with

what you do, I think it is worth taking this risk.

Aspiring musician Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) after witnessing a man trying to drown himself

end up quitting his job and joining a band. Every band member is rather reserved about Jon

joining the band except the singer and bandleader Frank (Michael Fassbender) and that maybe

should have been the red flag for Jon because Frank is wearing a papier-mâché head, not just

occasionally - permanently, since he was a little boy. Despite all the weirdness of the group

they all seems to get along fairly well, complementing each other in a way, except, well, Jon.

Especially Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has it in for him which doesn’t stop them from hooking

up in a hottub but who is also trying really hard to get rid of him.

That movie as a whole is something completely different and that might be the reason why it

reached such high critical acclaim at a number of film festivals. It is not something the average

person would go to watch in theatres, or later on on Netflix for that matter, but it has a really

nice vibe to it. Despite it being a film about music, not many people would actually call the

mostly cacophonic noises forced out of the instruments art. Had the music the group was

creating actually been good the movie might have reached a broader audience. It is a little too

avant garde for my personal taste.

When you think you‘ve gone far enough, go farther.
