Communicating Christ to the Digital Continent

n his address to the participants of the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Council for Social Communica ons Pope Francis reminded them that this years celebra on of World Communications Day coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the Conciliar Decree Inter

Mirifica He stated that this Decree expresses the Churchrsquos attentiveness towards the new modern instruments in the communica on media and the need to incorporate these into the work of evangelisa on In the last few decades the various means of social communica on have evolved signifi cantly and the Churchrsquos concern is to use these new forms and expressions in communica ng Christ to the digital con nent

Explaining the reason for this orienta on the Pope quoted Benedict XVIs Message for the 2013 World Communica ons Day ldquoThe world of social communica ons more and more has become a living environment for many a web where people communicate with each other expanding the boundaries of their knowledge and rela onshipsrdquo Pope Francis elaborated that Church communica ons through the use of social networking is ldquoto understand how to enter into dialogue with the men and women of today in order to appreciate their desires their doubts and their hopes and help them to meet Christ

This is all the more urgent because many feel let down by a Chris anity that appears sterile struggling precisely to communicate the depth of meaning that faith gives It is evident today in the age of globalisa on there is a growing sense of disorienta on and isola on there is also an increasing loss of meaning to life an inability to connect with a ldquohomerdquo and a struggle to build meaningful rela onships It is therefore important to know how to dialogue and how to enter with discernment into the environments created by new technologies into social networks in such a way as to reveal a presence that listens converses and encourages

A valuable piece of advice enunciated by Pope Francis in his address was that we should not be afraid to be this presence expressing our Chris an iden ty as we become ci zens of this environment of the web A Church that follows this path learns how to walk with everybody An ancient rule of Chris an pilgrims says Any one accompanying a pilgrim must walk at the same pace as the pilgrim not ahead and not lagging behind This precisely explains his statement that lsquoa Church that accompanies the journey knows how to walk as people walk todayrsquo

He pointed out that the challenge we all face together in this environment of social communica ons is not principally technological but the ability to walk with the pilgrim through life as Jesus walked with the pilgrims of Emmaus warming their hearts and leading them to the Lord Are we capable of communica ng the face of a Church which can be a lsquohomersquo to everyone We talk about the Church behind closed doors But evangelisa on is more than a Church with open doors It is walking with others through the open door of the Church enabling them to fi nding a lsquohomersquo building a lsquohomersquo building the Church

He cautioned against the temptation to use the means of social communication as a manipula ve technique to theologically brainwash people into religion which leads to a nominal encounter and not an involved encounter with the Live Person of Christ The challenge of communica ng Christ to the digital con nent is to lead to a personal rediscovery through means of social communica on as well as by personal contact of the beauty which is at the heart of our existence and our journey the beauty of faith the beauty of the encounter with Christ

Dear Brothers and SistersAs the 2013 World Communica ons Day draws near I would like to off er you some refl ec ons on an increasingly important reality regarding the way

in which people today communicate among themselves I wish to consider the development of digital social networks which are helping to create a new agora an open public square in which people share ideas informa on and opinions and in which new rela onships and forms of community can come into being

These spaces when engaged in a wise and balanced way help to foster forms of dialogue and debate which if conducted respec ully and with concern for privacy responsibility and truthfulness can reinforce the bonds of unity between individuals and eff ec vely promote the harmony of the human family The exchange of informa on can become true communica on links ripen into friendships and connec ons facilitate communion If the networks are called to realise this great poten al the people involved in them must make an eff ort to be authen c since in these spaces it is not only ideas and informa on that are shared but ul mately our very selves

The development of social networks calls for commitment people are engaged in building rela onships and making friends in looking for answers to their ques ons and being entertained but also in fi nding intellectual s mula on

and sharing knowledge and know-how The networks are increasingly becoming part of the very fabric of society inasmuch as they bring people together on the basis of these fundamental needs Social networks are thus nourished by aspira ons rooted in the human heart

The culture of social networks and the changes in the means and styles of communica on pose demanding challenges to those who want to speak about truth and values O en as is also the case with other means of social communica on the signifi cance and eff ec veness of the various forms of expression appear to be determined more by their popularity than by their intrinsic importance and value Popularity for its part is o en linked to celebrity or to strategies of persuasion rather than to the logic of argumenta on At mes the gentle voice of reason can be overwhelmed by the din of excessive informa on and it fails to a ract a en on which is given instead to those who express themselves in a more persuasive manner The social media thus need the commitment of all who are conscious of the value of dialogue reasoned debate and logical argumenta on of people who strive to cul vate forms of discourse and expression which appeal to the noblest aspira ons of those engaged in the communica on process Dialogue and debate can also fl ourish and grow when we converse with and take seriously people whose ideas are diff erent from our own ldquoGiven the reality of cultural diversity people need not only to accept the existence of the culture of others but also to aspire to be enriched by it and to off er to it whatever they possess that is good true and beau fulrdquo (Address at the Mee ng with the World of Culture Beacutelem Lisbon May 12 2010)

The challenge facing social networks is how to be truly inclusive thus they will benefi t from the full par cipa on of believers who desire to share the message of Jesus and the values of human dignity which His teaching promotes Believers are increasingly aware that unless the Good News is made known also in the digital world it may be absent in the experience of many people for whom this existen al space is important The digital environment is not a parallel or purely virtual world but is part of the daily experience

of many people especially the young Social networks are the result of human interac on but for their part they also reshape the dynamics of communica on which builds rela onships a considered understanding of this environment is therefore the prerequisite for a signifi cant presence there

The ability to employ the new languages is required not just to keep up with the mes but precisely in order to enable the infi nite richness of the Gospel to fi nd forms of expression capable of reaching the minds and hearts of all In the digital environment the wri en word is o en accompanied by images and sounds Eff ec ve communica on as in the parables of Jesus must involve the imagina on and the aff ec vity of those we wish to invite to an encounter with the mystery of Godrsquos love Besides we know that Chris an tradi on has always been rich in signs and symbols I think for example of the Cross icons images of the Virgin Mary Christmas cribs stained-glass windows and pictures in our churches A signifi cant part of mankindrsquos ar s c heritage has been created by ar sts and musicians who sought to express the truths of the faith

In social networks believers show their authen city by sharing the profound source of their hope and joy faith in the merciful and loving God revealed in Christ Jesus This sharing consists not only in the explicit expression of their faith but also in their witness in the way in which they communicate ldquochoices preferences and judgements that are fully consistent with the Gospel even when it is not spoken of specifi callyrdquo (Message for the 2011 World Communica ons Day) A par cularly signifi cant way of off ering such witness will be through a willingness to give oneself to others by pa ently and respec ully engaging their ques ons and their doubts as they advance in their search for the truth and the meaning of human existence The growing dialogue in social networks about faith and belief confi rms the importance and relevance of religion in public debate and in the life of society

For those who have accepted the gi of faith with an open heart the most radical response to mankindrsquos ques ons about love truth and the meaning of life mdash ques ons certainly not absent from social networks mdash are found in the person of Jesus Christ It is natural for those who have faith to desire to share it respec ully and tac ully with those they meet in the digital forum Ul mately however if our eff orts to share the Gospel bring forth good fruit it is always because of the power of the Word of God itself to touch hearts prior to any of our own eff orts Trust in the power

of Godrsquos work must always be greater than any confi dence we place in human means In the digital environment too where it is easy for heated and divisive voices to be raised and where sensa onalism can at mes prevail we are called to a en ve discernment

Let us recall in this regard that Elijah recognised the voice of God not in the great and strong wind not in the earthquake or the fi re but in ldquoa s ll small voicerdquo (1 Kings 1911-12) We need to trust in the fact that the basic human desire to love and to be loved and to fi nd meaning and truth mdash a desire which God Himself has placed in the heart of every man and woman mdash keeps our contemporaries ever open to what Blessed Cardinal Newman called the ldquokindly lightrdquo of faith

Social networks as well as being a means of evangelisa on can also be a factor in human development As an example in some geographical and cultural contexts where Chris ans feel isolated social networks can reinforce their sense of real unity with the worldwide community of believers The networks facilitate the sharing of spiritual and liturgical resources helping people to pray with a greater sense of closeness to those who share the same faith An authen c and interac ve engagement with the ques ons and the doubts of those who are distant from the faith should make us feel the need to nourish by prayer and refl ec on our faith in the presence of God as well as our prac cal charity ldquoIf I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but have not love I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbalrdquo (1 Cor 131)

In the digital world there are social networks which off er our contemporaries opportuni es for prayer medita on and sharing the Word of God But these networks can also open the door to other dimensions of faith Many people are actually discovering precisely thanks to a contact ini ally made online the importance of direct encounters experiences of community and even pilgrimage elements which are always important in the journey of faith In our eff ort to make the Gospel present in the digital world we can invite people to come together for prayer or liturgical celebra ons in specifi c places such as churches and chapels There should be no lack of coherence or unity in the expression of our faith and witness to the Gospel in whatever reality we are called to live whether physical or digital When we are present to others in any way at all we are called to make known the love of God to the furthest ends of the earth

I pray that Godrsquos Spirit will accompany you and enlighten you always and I cordially impart my blessing to all of you that you may be true heralds and witnesses of the Gospel ldquoGo into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole crea onrdquo (Mk 1615)

We are living in a digital age or as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI says ldquowe are living in the Digital

Con nentrdquo It is in this context that we need to understand the great commission of Mark 16 ldquoGo into all the world and preach the gospel to every creaturerdquo

This call to lsquogo proclaimrsquo is a call to one and all (the Bap sed) and hence each of us has the invita on and obliga on to proclaim the Good News For the proclama on of the Good News is far from over To quote the words of Blessed John Paul II at the beginning of Redemptoris Missio ldquoThe mission of Christ the Redeemer which is entrusted to the Church is s ll very far from comple on It is the Spirit who impels us to proclaim the great works of God lsquoFor if I preach the Gospel that gives me no ground for boas ng For necessity is laid upon me Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospelrsquo (1 Corinthians 916) The Kingdom aims at transforming human rela onships it grows gradually as people slowly learn to love forgive and serve one anotherrdquo

Thus the call to make Christ known to all is the responsibility and obliga on of every Chris an The power of the Internet must never be underes mated and the social media must and should be used as the new tool to make this message known It is in this context that I now present simple ps that we can use so that Christ is proclaimed But fi rst this requires certain prerequisites that the Year of Faith so wonderfully communicatedbull To Know our Faith more deeply we are called to deepen our Knowledge

and Experience our Faith through an encounter with Christbull To Live our Faith more authen cally we are called to witness and live the challenge of discipleship in our daily livesbull To Proclaim our Faith more confi dently we are invited to preach Christ

This invita on to Faith challenges us to bring Christ into the realm of our daily lives to be willing to speak and witness to Christ even in the cyber world

Here are ten simple things that you can do to proclaim Christ to the world

1) Be a Witness share your Tes mony Tell people what having a rela onship with God means to you Simply state who Christ is to you

2) Be Christ Be posi ve If you update your Facebook status regularly ensure your status updates are posi ve and Faith-based Post about things and people that youre thankful for Or even name some of the ways that youve been blessed recently If you dont have something nice to say dont say it Posi vity like nega vity is contagious

3) The Word speaks showcase it A good idea is to post encouraging Scripture verses and men on how theyrsquove touched you

4) Get out on your friendsrsquo walls Go out of your way to fi nd old classmates or colleagues and friend them Then you can start building rela onships and share the love of Christ with a wider audience

5) Give thanks Try to show your thankfulness to the Lord every day Post His Word to give hope peace and encouragement to those who visit your page

6) Laughter is good medicine Share church humour and funny illustra ons

of communica ons Any semblance of one-upmanship is best consigned to the dustbin for at stake is not ego but the importance of the message that the given text strives to convey accurately and briefl y and the interests of the reader everything else being of secondary importance

Christ came into the world to establish a kingdom of jus ce love and peace How prepared am I to put on the yoke that Christ bears so as to collaborate with Him in establishing His kingdom Do I belong to any group of commi ed Chris ans who serve the needs of the Chris an community at large If not why Does the kingdom of God within me radiate outwards Do I strive in my own way with my own God-given talents to overcome selfi shness and so reach out to Christ in the poor How sensi ve am I to the demands of my faith In what way do

I put my religion into prac ce besides prayers and devo ons Does my heart vibrate with the compassion that Christ expressed to one and all Do I reach out spontaneously to the lsquoleastrsquo members of society Do I realise the various some mes strange situa ons in which I have to bear witness to Christ Am I strong enough not only to stand the pressures of evil elements but even be a source of inspira on to them

These and many more ques ons keep arising in my mind I hope the Lord will bless me with His grace to answer them truthfully For me the Year of Faith will not end It will endure as long as the fi re of faith burns in my heart

parents are very domina ng children take recourse to watching violence which they cannot express in order to escape the oppressive behaviour in their home bull At younger ages children cannot easily understand what television portrays They take things they see concretely and television or cinema c fantasies are more real than some actual events which could take place eg Ghost and horror movies aff ect children a lot more than they do adults bull These days pornography cons tutes aggressive media fare not only among adults but also among minors The increasing violent acts by minors and on minors speak volumes

Increasing amounts of ero ca prevalent in the media specially the internet are violent in nature especially against women and research done on male adult viewers shows that aggressive pornography increases male aggression against females Ero ca cul vates myths about rape and gender roles

Thus the media operates and aff ects children and persons always in concert with other socialisa on agents mdash parents teachers mentors caretakers peers etc So here is the role of the

leader in society whether a parent a pastor a religious sister or a lay leader in hisher sphere of service

On Communica ons Sunday (World Communica ons Day November 17 2013) we are indeed mindful of how we are swimming if not drowning in the media The internet is no more lying on the desktop computer or the laptop in the study it is now palm-top Very reasonable off ers for internet packages by a variety of companies with a rac ve discount policies make it irresis ble for any one who owns a smart phone or even the soon-ge ng-outdated mobile or cell phone Parents o en have no or very li le control on what their children and youth are spending their me on even in school especially if they have already given them a smartphone

Awareness is the key to a be er and healthier lifestyle mdash health not only physically but also spiritually and psychologically Just as the bliss of ignorance is no longer desired the presence of knowledge in its vastness need not lead us to degraded living Let us live mediated lives mdash mediated by the work of the Holy Spirit

Evangelisation in the Digital Age NEWSVANEWSVABishops from across Brazil gathered on Monday November 4 for the start of a special seminar on Communica on The mee ng took place in Jaboatatildeo dos Guararapes just outside the central coastal city of Recife The President of the Pon fi cal Council for Social Communica ons (pccsva) Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli gave the opening address on lsquoCommunica on and Evangelisa on in the Digital Agersquo

In it he provided an overview of some of the most widely used social networks today and highlighted the online presence of Newsva the Va can news network which brings together the Holy Seersquos media services into one place and on various social media pla orms The PCCS launched the web portal in 2011 as a new media service connected to the papal ministry The portal receives around 90000 visits per day and many more in the social media pla orms where it is also present and which allow interac ve engagement Newsva is presented in fi ve languages (English Spanish French Italian Portuguese) with plans in the future to add Arabic The reality of media convergence and the need for par cipa on in the digital culture were other points covered in his talk

On the importance of exchange with other cultures Archbishop Celli said ldquoWe live in a mul cultural society and we must maintain a deep and respec ul dialogue with each other which can be a source of enrichment in our own journeyrdquo Regarding the topic of confi dent and eff ec ve communica on Archbishop Celli noted the example of Pope Francis saying ldquoThe Pope profoundly understands the importance of this concept He speaks simply and directly also through his gestures which give hope to so many peoplerdquo

He also underscored that the new digital arena calls for changes in the way the Church speaks and how it par cipates in this environment ldquoHow can we help the Church dialogue through new technologies in the digital culture How can we help others encounter and get to know the person of Jesus if the Church is not also present in this environmentrdquo He noted that how we communicate can also make a diff erence and that spontaneity and interac on are very eff ec ve in communica on

For several years now through his GEM e-newsle er that reaches over 20000 readers Fr Felix Rebello has been promo ng the twin ideas of waste segrega on at source and conver ng organic waste into energy

In July 2013 his a en on was drawn to a new ar cle lsquoWhere there is a Will there is a Wayrsquo In the ar cle I had described how Fr P J Joseph had reached a decision to set up a biogas plant at this retreat house in Panchmarhi a hill town in Madhya Pradesh This ar cle inspired Fr Felix to go for biogas at his new church in Panvel an hour by train from Mumbai

The Panvel priest recalls ldquoIt occurred to me that if kitchen waste can be converted into biogas it will not only solve some of the problems we were having in compos ng the church could also save some money on the LPG cooking gasrdquo

Fr Felix acted immediately He wrote to me expressing interest in se ng up a biogas plant and invited me to visit his new church So with Narendra Jindal an expert on biogas and a friend for over three decades I visited St Francis Xavier Church and Polytechnic opposite the Panvel railway sta on A er some discussion and walk around the site we suggested that the biogas system be installed on the terrace of the church building

The date for installa on was set for September 14 Once the two PVC tanks of 1500 litres and 1000 litres were delivered Narendra and a local plumber set to work By sunset the installa on was complete About 150 kg of animal dung and 150 litres of water were poured into the digester tank to start the anaerobic process of gas produc on Methane gas began to fl ow into the church kitchen a fl oor below the terrace for the fi rst me on October 5 Fr Felix and his cook Alex were jubilant Says Fr Felix ldquoThough I had heard and read that waste can be converted into cooking gas now that I can see it I am convinced that going in for biogas was environmentally and economically a good decisionrdquo

With a capacity of 15 cubic metres the biogas unit cost Rs 26500 The two PVC tanks were purchased for Rs 14500 labour and miscellaneous charges amounted to Rs 3000 Narendra and I waived the consultancy and installa on fee of Rs 8000 and donated a new biogas stove These costs are expected to be recovered within four years from the subs tu on of four LPG cylinders per year The fi nancial rate of return es mated at 148 per cent makes it a good investment

At the recently concluded Khandala Laity Retreat (October 16-20) at St Xavierrsquos Villa the Spiritual Director Rev Fr Cleophas Braganza SDB of Don Boscorsquos Shrine Matunga decided to dwell on the ten sessions of Catholic Evangelist Fr Robert Barronrsquos lsquoCatholicismrsquo

This being the 108th year of the existence of the Khandala Laity Retreat by for and of the laity Fr Cleo was the very fi rst Salesian to share in this Retreat movement that Cardinal Simon Pimenta whilst inaugura ng the Centenary session in 2005 said that such a Ministry should be in the Guinness Book of Records

A priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Rector at Mundelein Seminary Fr Barronrsquos Catholicism is a master work by a master teacher In ten episodes that take the viewer around the Catholic world from Chartres to the slums of Kolkata and dozens of points in between Fr Barron lays out the Catholic proposal in a visually stunning and engaging series of presenta ons that invites everyone into the heart of the faith which is friendship with Jesus Christ

Catholicism I can tes fy that this was a great labour of love love for the Lord love for the Church and love for the truths the Church teaches Yet there is nothing saccharine here nothing cheesy nothing pop-trendy Itrsquos Catholic Classic not Catholic Lite but John Cummingsrsquo cinematography is so beau ful Steve Mullenrsquos original score is so fetching (drawing on ancient chants in a thoroughly contemporary way) and Fr Barronrsquos narra on is so de mdash the man has a genius for the telling example or analogy mdash that even the most diffi cult facets of Catholic belief and prac ce come alive in a completely accessible way

At the centre of it all is Jesus of Nazareth posing that unavoidable and disturbing ques on ldquoWho do you say that I amrdquo

Viewers of Catholicism will get to know many of the great minds and spirits who wrestled with that ques on over two millennia mdash Peter and Paul Augus ne and Thomas Aquinas and Dante Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross Edith Stein and Katherine Drexel

So what led Fr Barron to create this Magnum Opus A young Dominican friar presented Thomas Aquinasrsquo argument from mo on for Godrsquos existence to his freshman religion class He was not quite sure why this should have been the case but that lecture lit a fi re in him He became convinced of the reality of God in a way that he hadnrsquot been before and he wanted to learn more and more about philosophy and theology His quest for the Truth led him to fi lm this 10-part documentary The Catholicism Project (journeying to 16 countries to tell the story of the Church)

Not only Fr Barron but even Fr Cleo hoped that by concentra ng dwelling and elabora ng on Catholicism the series and this Retreat would reach both fallen-away Catholics to remind them of the beauty and the truth of Catholicism and restoring respect for a Church that is s ll recovering from the sexual abuse scandal and ba ling secularism ldquoA handful of people did terrible thingsrdquo they both admi ed ldquobut we have 2000 years of beauty art architecture liturgy and the saintsrdquo

Catholicism was produced through a lot of blood sweat and tears begging and events Eventually Fr Barron obtained enough to do one trip The cost was about $250000 per episode for travelling housing fi lming and edi ng They went to the Holy Land fi rst It was started in 2008 and the fi lming ended in 2010 with a budget of $3 million only and a small crew They visited 50 loca ons in 16 countries Many have described Fr Robert as a kind of modern Fulton Sheen Perhaps more than any priest he has really taken the Second Va can Councilrsquos call in Inter Mirifi ca to heart u lising every means of communica on to spread the truth of the Gospel

He always had a ten-part series in mind They fi lmed and con nued begging and once they had the money theyrsquod take their next trip In the middle of the project the economy collapsed and many of their donors backed out They con nued praying especially to the Li le Flower (St Theacuteregravese of Lisieux) their patroness and in the end they took 12 trips to 16 diff erent countries and eventually got it done

What struck many of the Retreatants at Khandala was the portrayal of other Retreatants at Lough Derg in Ireland It was St Patrickrsquos purgatory in the Middle Ages Therersquos a rocky island in the middle of this large lake Itrsquos a pilgrimage site where people come for weekend retreats When they arrive they remove their shoes they stay awake and do other peniten al exercises We were struck by the dedica on and sincerity of those Retreatants barefooted penitents making their way around the island and its beds of stone in dismal cold and freezing rain

Focolare Diwali CelebrationIt was a novel way of celebra ng Diwali with the children of the surrounding slums and members of the Focolare Movement The Movement in Goregaon celebrated Diwali with the beneficiary children of its lsquoUdihsa Projectrsquo by organizing a diya pain ng contest and a rangoli compe on Paints brushes and water were given to the children who were organised into groups of four each The Diwali story and the signifi cance of ligh ng diyas was explained to them in simple language

Latin Syrian dioceses ink agreement for coexistenceThe dioceses of La n and Syro-Malabar rites in Delhi area have come up with a set of mutually agreed guidelines for peaceful ecclesial coexistence following the norms established by the Second Vatican Council some five decades ago

Successful AgeingSir In concluding the editorial lsquoCentury of Resplendent Faithrsquo (The Examiner Nov 9) the writer talks about a project concerning senior ci zens suff ering from Parkinsonrsquos disease demen a and other age-related diseases For those of us whose age is catching up all we need to do is cul vate a healthy lifestyle To quote the words of Eubie Blake the great rag me composer and pianist who was s ll performing at the age of 99 ldquoIf Irsquod known I was going to live this long Irsquod have taken be er care of myselfrdquo Letrsquos face it old age is what lies ahead If yoursquore 50 or even 60 you might not give much thought to the health challenges of ageing But just as planning for future fi nancial needs is important so is planning for op mum health While some diseases such as Alzheimerrsquos and certain cancers con nue to confound researchers a great number can be prevented forestalled or minimised with a healthy lifestyle and regular health screenings lsquoThe more you do in middle age to prepare yourself for successful ageing the be errsquo

As adults age many worry that they are becoming more forge ul They think forge ulness is the fi rst sign of Alzheimerrsquos Disease (AD) In the past memory loss and confusion were accepted as just part of growing older However scien sts now know that people can remain both alert and able as they age although it may take them longer to remember things During the past several years scien sts have begun to focus on a type of cogni ve change called Mild Cogni ve Impairment

(MCI) which is diff erent from age-related cogni ve change and o en over years may progress to AD People with amnesia (having a specifi c memory diffi culty) do have ongoing memory problems but they do not have other losses typical of AD such as confusion a en on problems and diffi culty with language

The most debilita ng factor for elders is stress Stress management works on two levels The first is about maintaining a harmonious lifestyle so that stress does not get out of control This involves having outlets that allow you to release the stress The second strategy involves learning how to relax yourself or change your mood if stress is having a nega ve impact on your life There are no great secrets about preven ng stress from being a serious issue in your life If you want to prevent stress then you have to engage in life

Reap what you sowSir Since the 1970s before every elec on the BMC and the State government have been ritually revising the cut-off dates for illegal slums in the city Such decisions have encouraged exodus of migrants into this mega-city and slums have proliferated like cancer encroaching upon forest lands destroying mangroves occupying municipalgovernment lands grabbing airportrailway property These slums because of their vote-bank are given every possible amenity eg there is no property tax for them To demolish them is almost impossible because every politician protests to protectsupport them Any purported demoli on is only farcical and an eye-wash In contrast in the case of Campa-Cola Society ironically the State govt and BMC have shown fi rmness and stubbornness This is because the people living in fl ats etc do not form a formidable vote-bank as they hardly cast their vote If all these ci zens collec vely decide to cast their vote in the coming elec ons they can literally decide who will form the government Today the slum-dwellers decide who will rule Hence they are treated like gods People living in fl ats get step-motherly treatment
