It’s time once again for Ian R.B. Nairnsey to bring a taste of Broadway to Okeechobee. This year in his annual lecture series illus-trated by photographs and musical record-ings, he decided to do something different. Since Okeechobee is known as a cow town, Mr. Nairnsey decided to do a series about Broadway musicals and movies with west-ern themes. All performances will be at the Okeechobee County Library, 206 S.W. 16th St., at 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

The series opens Jan. 5 with “Okla-homa!” —the longest-running play on Broadway. The original production opened on Broadway, March 31, 1943, and ran for 2,243 performances. Mr. Nairnsey said the popularity of “Oklahoma!” is due in part to how well the plot, songs and dances fl owed together. He said all those elements were beautifully handled as one blend. Another

reason for the musical’s success, according to Mr. Nairnsey is that it was a beautifully told homespun tale of America which had a nostalgic appeal to servicemen of the day. It was the fi rst musical written by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and contains well know songs such as “Oh What a Beautiful Mornin,’” “People will Say We’re in Love,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” and of course, “Oklahoma!” The play was made into a movie in 1955 starring Gordon MacRae.

The following Saturday, Jan. 12, Mr. Na-rinsey presents “Destry Rides Again,” a 1932 fi lm starring Tom Mix. The movie was re-made in 1939 starring James Stewart and Marlene Dietrich. It was rewritten for Broad-way in 1959 and starred Andy Griffi th.

“Annie Get Your Gun,” about sharpshoot-er Annie Oakley, a member of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, is the presentation for Jan. 26. It features the music of Irving Berlin and

contains such hits as “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Doin’ What Comes Naturally, “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun,” and “Anything you Can Do.”

The following Saturday, Feb. 2, will fea-ture “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” which appeared on Broadway in 1978 and was made into a 1982 movie starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton. It also featured Noah Beery, Jr. and Jim Nabors. The late Charles Durning was nominated for an Oscar for a supporting role. Mr. Nairnsey says the musical tells the true story of a house of ill repute that was allowed to operate because local law enforcement offi cials used it as a source of information against bad guys.

The series ends on Feb. 6 with “Paint Your Wagon.” This 1951 Broadway musical was made into a movie in 1969 starring Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. These two ac-tors, both known for their tough-guy roles, had singing parts in the move. Popular songs

from “Paint Your Wagon” include “Wand’rin’ Star,” sung by Lee Marvin and “They Call the Wind Maria.”

Mr. Nairnsey’s interest in musical theater began many years ago when he saw “South Pacifi c” on Broadway. His fascination con-tinued as he practiced law in England for 30 years. He has amassed an extensive collec-tion of recorded music.

In what could be a sign of an improving economy, Okeechobee may soon have three new dollar stores representing two nation-wide chains. Bryn Wilburn, Public Relations Manager for Family Dollar, confi rmed that Family Dollar plans to open a new store on S.R. 70 late in 2013. The company has fi led a site plan with the Okeechobee County Plan-ning and Zoning Department for a store on the south side of S.R. 70 near the intersec-tion with U.S. 98. There is already one Family Dollar in Okeechobee.

However, Mrs. Wilburn told the Okeecho-bee News, “We are a neighborhood store and serve the needs of the families in the immediate vicinity of our stores. It’s not un-common to have Family Dollar Stores within a mile or two of one anther.” According to their website, Family Dollar has over 6,800 stores from Maine to Arizona.

A rival company, Dollar General Store, with over 10,000 stores in 40 states, accord-ing to their website, may also be coming to Okeechobee. While Dollar General offi cials did not respond to queries by newspaper deadline, the planning and zoning depart-

ment has information that Dollar General is planning to build a store on S.R. 70 about 2 blocks east of the proposed Family Dollar

and a second Dollar General on U.S. 441 S.E. across the road from the existing Family Dol-lar Store.

C.J. Tullio fi rst moved about 800 miles from Okeechobee to Athens, West Virginia to pursue his dream of playing college foot-ball. He never dreamed he would move around even more after his arrival.

Tullio played every position on the of-fensive line at one point or another during his four-year career at the Division II School which ended last month.

Tullio grew from 5’10” and about 225 pounds in high school to fi ll out at 6’1” and 280 pounds in college.

His senior year was probably his best as he was named second team All-Conference in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

“My career went quick. This year was personally the best season I’ve had. The team fell short but it felt good to get a ring from the 2011 Conference Championship,” he noted.

The Mountain Lions did not make the playoffs as they fi nished (7-4). Still Tullio was part of a turnaround in the program over the past four years.

“It was kind of a letdown this year but they should be good next year. It was nice to keep playing football and to fi nish up strong,” he added.

Tullio switched to right tackle this year and excelled. He started at center, guard and tackle during his career. He said one of the fondest moments was playing against for-mer teammate Aukeemian Mills who plays

for West Virginia Wesleyan. Concord pre-vailed in this year’s game 23-16.

“It just went very fast. My fi rst start was a scary moment but a good moment at the same time. I’d say the high point was win-ning conference my junior year,” he added.

Tullio has another year of academic work before he graduates. He intends to become a teacher and is studying sports manage-ment. He would like to return to Florida and work as a physical education teacher.

C.J. is the son of Susan and Jonah Al-len. He was part of a successful squad at Okeechobee High as he earned three letters and appeared in two post-season games.

Spice and marijuana• Spice is a toxic concoction that is not

supposed to be smoked or in any way in-gested by a human being. It says so on the package. Anyone who smokes it is an idiot. Teens need to be smarter than that. Smoking that Spice stuff can cause all kinds of physi-cal problems. It can even kill you. Just be-cause you can purchase something legally does not mean it is safe to smoke it. There are all kinds of toxic things that you can buy legally that are not safe to smoke or ingest and that is why there are warning labels on the packages.

• I don’t drink or smoke. If marijuana were legal, I would not use it. But if they put it on the ballot I would vote to legalize it be-cause to me it is just like alcohol and Prohibi-tion. When they made selling alcohol illegal, then the organized crime gangs got involved in it to make money and that led to all kinds of violence. Right now smuggling marijuana is big business and related to all kinds of vio-lence. When they lifted Prohibition and let people buy alcohol legally, it took the vio-lence out of it. I think the same thing would happen with marijuana. If people could buy marijuana at a store legally, they would not buy from the smugglers. The market for the illegal stuff would dry up.

• Two states have put marijuana on the ballot and the people there wanted it to be legal. I think Florida should do the same. Let farmers grow it legally. That would be a

good cash crop for a lot of farmers who are struggling now. And they could tax it and the money could go to the government instead of to the drug lords.

A message• A friend told that God is like a radio sta-

tion. He is always sending messages, you just have to tune in.

• I’ve seen nothing and I’ve heard noth-ing. Absence of proof, is proof of absence.

• There are none so blind, as he who will not see...

Taxes• You get taxed and taxed and have noth-

ing to show for it. It’s about like the quality of water we have here in ‘Chobee. It’s hor-rible. How many of you buy bottled water to drink? You have to replace your shower heads and faucets nearly every two years because the water erodes them. If new de-velopers want to hook up, they should pay for the expansion of the water system. There are more than enough homes for sale that are already connected to OUA. The gouge you until you have seen enough, paying over $100 a month for water that is undrinkable ... water we get charged twice for.

• I’ll keep my yucky, sulphur, iron water well, thank You. I truly don’t know how the city residents put up with the poor quality.

• You think home owners insurance is out of control, just wait until 2013. That is when our new “auto insurance” reform measures go in to effect. We are forced by law to purchase and pay for $10,000 worth of medical coverage, but thanks to the Re-publicans in Tallahassee, we will now have to beg our insurance companies to allow us access to even $2,500 worth of coverage. To access the full $10,000 we will have to be on death’s door.

In September of this year Sierra Coward competed in the Miss Rodeo Florida Pag-eant in the Teen division. This competition entailed the three parts of the horsemanship competition: a written exam, an interview and performance to two riding patterns and a fl ag carry. She modeled, and gave a speech about Florida and why she wants to represent her state, she took a written exam about rodeo and current events, she answered on stage questions about rodeo and current events and conducted a person-ality interview and submitted a photo also for judging. Sierra won the much sought af-ter Horsemanship Award, the State Speech Award, the Photogenic Award and the title of Miss Teen Rodeo Florida, 2013. Winning the pageant is quite a feat in itself, but that isn’t where it ends, it is a job interview. Her job is now to represent PRCA, rodeo and Florida.

Sierra will embark on this journey of-fi cially on Jan. 1, 2013. She will travel the State of Florida to rodeos, parades, dinners, conventions and schools. Her job as an am-bassador for Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association will place her in many cities throughout her year.

On Feb. 22, Sierra will be offi cially crowned at the Denim and Diamonds gala fundraiser at the KOA Resort. This is her offi -cial crowning for all her friends in Okeecho-bee to see. This will be her one large fund raiser to assist with the expenses of the trav-el required.

Her supporters’ goal is to raise enough money throughout her year that she can also attend the Wrangle National Finals Ro-deo in Las Vegas in December of 2013 and support her, Miss Rodeo Florida 2013 Jenna Smeenk at the Miss Rodeo America pageant and participate during the rodeo with meet and greets, dinners, autograph signings etc. The Teens are encouraged to attend to vi-sualize the “brass ring” achievable by these young Ladies.

On her schedule from January through April, Sierra will be required to travel to Des-tin, Homestead, Kissimmee, Lakeland, Lake

City, Davie, and attend rodeos in Okeecho-bee, Brighton and Arcadia. These are mul-tiple-day rodeos and require staying for at least three days. In March she will host a weekend for the other Teen Queens from across America to attend the Shoot-Out ro-deo in Ft. Pierce. She has received an invita-tion to attend a day at the National Cattle-man’s Association Convention in Tampa as a guest of Woody Larson.

There is no higher level for Sierra to achieve in her age group as Miss Teen Ro-deo Florida. When she achieves the age of 19 she will be eligible to compete for Miss Rodeo Florida and would at that time be re-quired to represent Florida at the Miss Ro-deo America Pageant.

Even though Sierra will travel extensively in parts of her year, she also wants to be active in her own community. She plans to attend as many events here as possible to assist with fund raisers and other public events.

Tickets for the Denim & Diamonds event are available at Okeechobee Music, Syble’s Flowers, Eli’s Western Wear and BJH South-ern Accessories. For more information, call 863-634-6397.

A man already on drug offender proba-tion was arrested on felony charges after he was allegedly found to have cocaine in his vehicle, as well as two young children.

Tavares Latrez Whitehead, 35, W. 30th St., Riviera Beach, was arrested Friday, Dec. 28, on felony charges of possession of co-caine, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a fi rearm by a convicted felon and child endangerment.

He was also arrested on a misdemeanor

charge of driving while license suspended with knowledge.

Records at the Okeechobee County Jail indicate that he is currently being held on $41,000 bond.

Whitehead was arrested by detectives from the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force after he failed to stop at a stop sign at the in-tersection of S.E. 39th Ave. and S.E. 28th St.

A detective’s arrest report indicated that the driver of a red 2002 Ford sports utility vehicle also refused to stop for the detec-tive until he, Whitehead, had reached a resi-dence on S.E. 21st Court. In the SUV with Whitehead were two children, ages 5 and 7, who apparently belonged to his girlfriend.

When Whitehead stepped out of the SUV the detective stated that there was a white residue on his pants, and that there was a substance found on the kick plate of the vehicle. When that substance found in the SUV was fi eld tested it reportedly indicated a positive result for the presence of cocaine.

The detective went on to state in the report that as Deputy Yamil Astacio, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff ’s Offi ce (OCSO), was on his way to the scene as a backup a concerned citizen pointed to something in the road on S.E. 21st Court.

After Whitehead was placed in handcuffs, the detective returned to the area where that citizen had pointed. The detective went on to say that the citizen was now holding sev-eral pieces of a substance that was similar to that found in the SUV.

A fi eld test was performed on those piec-es of substance and it indicated a positive result for the presence of cocaine.

The citizen reportedly told the detec-tive he saw a black man driving a red SUV throw something from the window. The citizen then picked up the suspected crack cocaine.

The suspected cocaine found in the street

and in the SUV weighed 1.1 grams, stated the detective.

According to the report the detective also found a loaded .380 caliber hand-gun in a pocket on the pas-senger’s side door of the SUV, as well as some sus-pected marijuana residue in the center console and on the driver’s side fl oor-

board.Whitehead is designated as a habitual

traffi c offender and, stated the detective, is currently on felony probation.

Department of Corrections (DOC) re-cords indicate that Whitehead is currently on drug offender probation. Those same records show that Whitehead, who is also known as T-Bone, was last sent to prison on March 14, 2008, and was released on March 4, 2012.

Whitehead was slated to complete his probation on July 17, 2014, state the DOC records.

The task force detective added in the arrest report the two children were turned over to their mother and that the Depart-ment of Children and Families (DCF) was notifi ed. The detective also notifi ed White-head’s probation offi cer of the arrest, stated the detective.

“Coming out of high school I had no of-fers, and now to sit on a Division 1 roster proves anyone can do what they want to do if they put the effort in,” he suggested.

Farrell has been busy this fall as he played a full schedule of baseball. He also has fo-cused on conditioning as he dropped 18 pounds in his fi rst fi ve weeks of workouts. The Coaching staff also fi ne- tuned his me-chanics and expects to use him as a situa-tion left handed out of the bullpen this year.

“I feel like I’ve been competitive against college level hitters this fall. The Coach said he doesn’t intend to red shirt any freshmen this year and I expect to pitch a lot this year,” he told the Okeechobee News.

Farrell said he is very impressed with the Buccaneers Athletic Facilities. They had a large new stadium complete with a high tech scoreboard known as a ‘jumbotron’ to fans

Farrell also made the Dean’s List in his fi rst semester as he earned a 3.85 grade point average. He intends to study industrial engineering.

Farrell said he feels it’s a great opportu-nity and that he has adjusted well to college. The campus is located in Johnson City, Ten-nessee. He enjoys long walks around the campus and loved the fall colors.

He also looks forward to playing big name schools like Penn State.

“We will play some schools I watched on TV as I grew up. To get to play in their stadi-ums in front of a large crowd is going to be mind boggling,” he admitted. “The mound is still 60 foot 6 inches and the bases still 90 feet apart. The coaches here told me the game of baseball doesn’t know how old you are. They remind me to focus, work hard and get the job done.”

He is the son of Thomas and Marcie Far-rell of Okeechobee. Last year as a senior Far-rell won the pitcher of the year Award for OHS as he held opponents to a .235 batting average over 44 innings and had a solid 3.34 earned run average. He also struck out 42 batters. His top appearance of the year was six shutout innings at the always tough Port St. Lucie last March 16. from the register, added the report. The female cashier, who was in fear for

her life, complied with the man’s demands and handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, stated the report. The robber then al-legedly told the cashier and another witness to lie down on the fl oor, which they did.

Detective Lowe said store surveillance video indicated that the man then walked out of the store and turned left.

The area was searched extensively and OCSO K-9 Barco was brought in to aid in that search, but the suspect was not found.

That video also showed the suspect inside the store and brandishing a “chrome styled semi-automatic pistol in his right hand,” the report stated.

According to the report Detective Lowe, along with fellow Detective Augustin Sauce-do, returned to the store on Dec. 27 with a photo lineup.

“When she opened folder #4 she began to cry and identifi ed subject #2 as the per-son that robbed her at the store,” Detective Lowe stated. “When I asked her how she made that determination, she explained that the way he is looking at the camera in the photograph is the same way he looked at her during the robbery.”

That photo was of Jackson, stated the detective.

Jackson was located that afternoon by OCSO Deputy Heath Hughes.

Detective Lowe indicated in his report that Jackson did not offer any information on where he was at the time of the robbery. The detective went on to state that after De-tective Saucedo had taken Jackson to jail the man allegedly told him: “Even if I did rob the store, I wouldn’t tell you.”

Veteran’s widows eligible for benefi ts

Widows of veterans are possibly eligible for free VA benefi ts. Two of the benefi ts they may be entitled to are Death Pension or De-pendency Indemity Compensation (DIC). The Death Pension, more commonly known as a widow’s pension is an income based program through the Department of Veterans Affairs. To be eligible for a widow’s pension, the veteran must have served at least 90 days active service with at least one day during a war-time period and received a discharge under other than dishonorable conditions. Also, eligible widows in a nursing home or assisted living facility may also apply and a family member can assist in the application.

The other benefi t, DIC, is not income based, but is a monetary compensation pro-vided to the widow for the death of a veteran from a service connected disability, or in some instances whose death resulted from a non-service connected injury or disease and was rated 100% service connected from the VA. Widows or family members who think they may be eligible for a widow’s pension or DIC (even if not sure if death is service related) should contact the County Veterans’ Service Offi cer Betsy Grinslade at 863-763-6441, ext. 5.

Myron Jackson didn’t take long to get another coaching job as he moved on af-ter a three year stint at Okeechobee High School and found work in the college ranks for Coach Dawson Odums at Southern Uni-versity in the South Western Athletic Confer-ence this year.

Jackson coached the defensive line for the Jaguars this year. The team fi nished (4-7), went through a mid-season coaching change, and defeated arch-rival Grambling University in the Big Bayou Classic. Gram-bling is coached by former Tampa Bay Buc-caneer QB and Super Bowl Champion Doug Williams.

“It’s enjoyable getting back into college ball and it’s another opportunity for me,” Coach Jackson said, “I’m back to all day football. I don’t have to worry about classes half the day and having to manage an entire team.”

Jackson knew Coach Odums from his coaching days at North Carolina A&T and called him late last year to catch up with

him and see if there were jobs available. He was immediately hired to coach the defensive line.

“You always try to keep a close knit network of friends and acquaintances that can help you out and in this in-stance that is what happened. I knew

Coach Odums before and one week after I called him I was in Baton Rouge,” he ex-plained.

Jackson has had other coaching stops at the University of Connecticut after a college career at tight end for the Florida State Semi-noles. He also starred on the gridiron for the Brahmans in the early 90s.

“Okeechobee will always be my home because that is where I was born and bred. I still love Okeechobee and I’m proud to be there. I just hated I wasn’t able to fi nish my coaching career there the way I wanted to,” he added.

Brahman teams mostly struggled to get wins under Jackson with fi ve wins in his three seasons. He was able to bring the Brahmans to one regional appearance in 2010.

Jackson said he felt he left behind a great group of young men and played a small part in their success this year. OHS avoided a los-ing season with a (5-5) record.

“I hated that I wasn’t able to see those seniors off but I knew they were in capable hands,” he explained.

Ironically part of Jackson’s current duties at Southern is to recruit in Florida. He said his knowledge of football here should help him attract recruits and he doesn’t eliminate the possibility of having future Okeechobee players come to Southern University.

“You always keep your eyes and ears open and you never can tell. You just don’t know what player will catch your eye,” he added.

Southern fi red three-year coach Stump Mitchell just two games into the season. He was a former star and later assistant coach for the Washington Redskins. Odums was given the job on an interim basis in Septem-

ber but was named the permanent coach earlier this month. That bodes well for Jackson who has a close relationship with Odums.

“Southern is known for having a great football tradition,” Jackson said. “They have facilities that are second to none. We have a great fan base that is wild for Jaguar foot-ball.”

Jackson said he felt he did the best job he could at OHS and praised his former staff members for their efforts, not only to get wins, but to make an impact on the players, “You know hindsight is 20-20 but for the tal-ent I had I felt me and the coaches got the best we could out of the players. Every week was a battle.”

Jackson admitted he didn’t get into coach-ing just to experience victory. He said every coach should get into the profession to help kids and build young men. “At this point in time so many young men don’t have posi-tive role models in their lives. You want to help them grow. You don’t know when you may touch a young man’s life. You might give them an encouraging word or one push might get them rolling.”

Jackson said his goal continues to be to do his best for his players and to expect the best from them. He said football success is not just on the fi eld.

“When it is all said and done, you want to create a better citizen, a better husband, and one day a better father. If you did that you have done your job as a coach.”

FLW College Fishing is headed to Lake Okeechobee Jan. 12 for the fi rst of four stops in the Southeastern Conference. Fifty college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the Southeastern Con-ference Invitational tournament.

“This is going to be a very fun tourna-ment,” said Evinrude pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup Champion who has fi ve top-10 fi nishes on his home waters of Lake Okeechobee. “Wa-ter levels on Okeechobee are a lot higher this year, and the college anglers are going to be able to fi sh wherever they want to. There is so much more fi shable water now; it’s really pretty amazing.

“The big fi sh are starting to bite,” Martin continued. “The water has been up long enough that the fi sh are starting to settle in and move into the spawning phase. It’s get-ting better and better every day, but the big spawn hasn’t happened yet. The high water slowed them down from coming in on time,

but they’re getting on track right now. By tournament time it should be a good bite.”

When asked what baits would be popu-lar in this event, Martin suggested that the majority of anglers would be fl ipping crea-ture-style baits or throwing swimbaits.

“Any time you are fi shing Lake Okeecho-bee, you’re focusing your efforts on 3 to 6 feet of water,” Martin said. “That will hold true again this year. I’d be fl ipping a Bruiser Baits Intruder or throwing a Bruiser Baits Su-per Swimmer.”

Martin also had some tips for college an-glers who may not have much experience on Lake Okeechobee.

“Bring big enough rods,” he said. “That’s a mistake so many people make here. They bring tackle down here that is not set up for the battle they are about to get into. During the tournament, pick an area and really con-centrate on that spot. You don’t have to run all over the place to win this tournament.”

Martin predicted that the winning team will bring about 20 pounds to the scales.

Anglers will take off from C. Scott Driv-er Park located at 10100 W. Highway 78 in Okeechobee, Fla., at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the park beginning at 1:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

FLW College Fishing teams compete in four qualifying events in one of fi ve confer-ences – Central, Northern, Southern, South-eastern and Western. The top fi fteen teams from each regular-season tournament will qualify for one of fi ve conference invitational tournaments. The top ten teams from each conference invitational tournament will ad-vance to the 2014 FLW College Fishing Na-tional Championship.

College Fishing is free to enter and FLW Outdoors provides boats and drivers for each competing team along with travel al-lowances. All participants must be regis-tered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fi shing club recognized by their college or university.

They are developing databases and computer models to show how and where B vitamins are made in plants, knowledge scientists believe they can use to guide plant breeding projects, such as increasing plants’ vitamin contents, leading to more nutritious foods.

The research is detailed in the current is-sue of the Journal of Experimental Botany as part of the Darwin Review series.

Vitamin B defi ciencies are common the world over, including the U.S., and lack of B vitamins in the diet can cause serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and birth defects. These problems most of-ten occur when one crop becomes a major dietary staple.

Common sources of B vitamins — which include thiamin, ribofl avin, niacin and fo-late — are whole, unprocessed foods such as whole grains, green leafy vegetables and legumes.

The databases being developed are the foundation for models, or computer simula-tions, of the way B vitamins are created in plants. When complete, researchers can use the models to test ways to increase vitamin B in the system before experimenting on plants, said lead researcher Andrew Han-son, perhaps increasing the speed at which improved-nutrient crops can be produced.

Mr. Hanson, an eminent scholar in UF’s

horticultural sciences department, part of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sci-ences, said the models could also allow re-searchers to speed up the creation of plants for use in biofuel and bioplastic production.

“B vitamin pathways are involved in ev-erything,” Mr. Hanson said. “You can’t make biofuels or polymer constituents without the involvement of the cofactors that come from B vitamins.”

Dean DellaPenna, a biochemistry and molecular biology professor at Michigan State University and an authority on plant micronutrient biosynthesis, said the research will help guide scientists as they work to im-prove crop varieties.

“Understanding the pathways leading to B vitamin synthesis in plants will give researchers knowledge, a map of sorts, for balancing the B vitamin content of major crops,” DellaPenna said. “This is especially important for developing countries where people depend on a single crop for the ma-jority of their calories.”

The models show both what is and isn’t known about the creation of B vitamins.

Mr. Hanson said his team has begun fi lling in missing parts of the models, and hopes others will contribute as well.

“These models defi ne targets for discov-ery of B vitamin genes that are missing, and other mysteries that need to be addressed with the tools of comparative genomics, genetics, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and metabolic modeling,” he said.

The models are part of the SEED data-base, which contains detailed information on the genes in thousands of sequenced ge-nomes. A genome is the full set of genetic

information of an organism. The research focuses on corn, a ma-

jor food source for people and animals, as well as a biofuel source, and Arabidopsis, a small-genome plant often used to better un-derstand other plants.

Study authors also include Svetlana Gerdes of Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill.; Valérie de Crécy-Lagard and Claudia Lerma-Ortiz in UF’s department of microbiology and cell science; Océane Frelin in UF’s horticultural sciences depart-

ment; and Christopher S. Henry and Samuel M.D. Seaver with the Argonne National Lab-oratory and the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago.

Project members who helped conceive the study include Jesse Gregory, a UF pro-fessor in food science and human nutrition, and Don McCarty, a UF professor in horticul-tural sciences.

The National Science Foundation helped fund the research.
