Welcome To Issue No. 7 : The Spring Issue. Gone are the harsh tentacles of winter, rapidly stepping aside for the delicate tendrils of spring. Newness and freshness are part of our vocabulary as we unleash another inviting issue to our readers. We are moving in the right direction thanks to the passionate and often inspiring people who surround us. As we endeavour to push boundaries, we take fulfilment from the collaborations we embrace, and the creative nirvana that manifests itself in words or pictures. We can now open the window to fresher, brighter and warmer air that is turning up the heat on our communication, and helping us to remain daring, different and imaginative.

This Spring
Voir will have you ‘Dreaming in Pastel’. We saw a rainbow of soft springtime colours reigned throughout the runway collections for SS14. We adored the blush-toned shades smudged on lips and cheeks, to match the looks at J.W. Anderson and Mulberry, while Peter Pilotto and Temperley left us craving mojitos with their cool, green pieces. Pastel hues and sherbet shades are fresh and modern, making them a perfect collection to kick-start your summer with. Issue 7 is certainly filled with sugar-sweet pastel treats with which to coat your wardrobes.
Voir brings you lust-worthy trend reports for the new season, capturing the very best of New York, London, Milan and of course Leeds. Follow our insider-tips, and your name will surely be on every fashionistas lips this SS14.
There are more than a few can’t-miss features to look out for in this issue. As a prelude to International Women’s Day Voir delved into the magical world of Nicky Kinnaird (founder of Space NK.) Our writer Marianne Tupelo uncovers why we need to be shopping all things Space NK in our Store’s the Limit feature. Elizabeth Daisy on the other hand, leaves us dreaming in Dior, as she talks us through the delights of the Trianon Collection, through the eyes of Tyen, Dior’s Colour Creator. Acknowledged as one of Scandinavia’s biggest success stories, Marimekko are brought to everyone’s attention by Katherine Evans, who educates us on ‘The Pattern of Life’ in our In Designer section. Look out for our regular features by our fashion and beauty veterans Sarah Holden and Karen Dodds, whose articles are sure to keep you ahead of your Spring/Summer game. And last but not least, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for updates about a very exciting fashion event, coming soon! Enough said, sit back and relax - it’s time for you to be Voired.

Sheer delights, painterly prints, primary palettes and the graphic glam factor - Spring/Summer…SHOW YOURSELF!!!!

If there was ever a time to reboot your imagination with kaleidoscopic catwalk dreams then Spring Summer is it!! Upbeat and off track with an added dose of feminine charm this season’s collections are a candy-coated plethora of statement making trends that shout loud and proud.
Art BeatBold brushstrokes, Picasso-inspired graphics and Bauhuas primary colours depict a new direction for this season’s collections, a savvy mix of brash splashy prints and graffiti inspired patterns with a soupçon of tribalistic charm. The reign of the wall flower is over as this season’s new woman is a force to be reckoned with thanks to Céline’s eye-catching colour splash separates and Prada’s embroidered appliqués and quirky portrait prints worn layered over breezy chiffon skirts and print clash under layers.
Sheer de-LUXENothing says summer like translucent layers of organza, whimsical lace works and romantic cut outs. This season takes ‘barely there’ to a whole new level as sheer delights hit fever pitch on the catwalks of Stella McCartney, Isabel Marant and Cavalli. Victoria Beckham injected her iconic tailoring with a touch of translucid charm whilst Stella McCartney juxtaposed the most feminine of pretty openwork with a sporty injection of everyday cool.
Pale and InterestingBaby blue, blush pink, peaches and cream and soft-hued tones of lime made a dominant call on the catwalks this season as fresh pastels and sorbet shades presented fashion’s most refreshing trend. At Balenciaga sugary was less saccharine as Alexander Wang presented the most fashion-forward of silhouettes- lampshade leather shorts and crops tops whilst Carven colour clashed pretty pink ginghams with stark black and Cavalli references the golden age with super sexy pastel prints, spidery lace and metallic mesh.
![Page 14: Voir Fashion No7 : Dreaming In Dior](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022103103/568c4c0c1a28ab49169e984e/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The FunkGrunge glam provided the perfect rebellious antidote to the obligatory summer trends. Sequins, lamé and leather bridged the gap between the seasons with an edgy glamour that defined the new breed of rebel girl next door. At Saint Laurent, Hedi’s new army was a defiant league of sharp shouldered leggy goddesses where the only way to wear a mini skirt was with ankle socks whilst Givenchy’s collection was a mish-mash of super-luxe tribal-inspired sequined dresses and tabards. This season is most definitely all about the razzle dazzle.
Sports LuxeGiven it’s liberating influence and everyday wearability, it’s no wonder that sports luxe has been promoted from a seasonal trend to a way of life. Far less literal than in it’s catwalk infancy, the sporting references are far more refined than ever before- chic bomber jackets in luxe fabrications at Stella McCartney, cuffed joggers and digitally printed scuba dresses at Clover Canyon to the obligatory sweatshirts and cropped tops worn with tailored separates at Kenzo. Responsible for creating a whole new fashion generation of street couture addicts, sports luxe is an intrinsic part of the modern woman’s wardrobe.

If you’re looking for an attention-grabbing spring/summer wardrobe, Prada’s SS14 collection is where it’s at! Not only is this collection stunning and creative in an artistic sense, but it also pays homage to the power of femininity. Personally, my favourite look in the collection would have to be Prada’s unique take on the brassiere with built-in bra shapes on knitwear dresses. Accessories for the upcoming spring collection include striped legwarmers with multi-coloured sandals, a look which stood out to me most, and will almost certainly filter down onto the high street. This show-stopping collection encourages women to be daring and different which I think will be its lasting legacy! editor.

From the palette of soft hues comes a subtle range of colours to infuse your springtime wardrobe with light. Think all things from chalk to terra cotta and you won’t go far wrong.

From Prada’s murals to chanel’s art gallery display, modern Art and bold colour dominated the SS14 runways. The ‘Fashion-Art’ trend pays homage to power and femininity. It encourages women to be daring and different - Voir’s mantra.

The Philosophy of Marimekko.
Patterns and prints may come and go from the runways of the world
but one place you will always find them is at the Finnish design
powerhouse, Marimekko.
Words by Katherine Evans
![Page 66: Voir Fashion No7 : Dreaming In Dior](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022103103/568c4c0c1a28ab49169e984e/html5/thumbnails/66.jpg)
Whether you know it or not, we’d place bets that you’ve come across one of Marimekko’s patterns before.
Acknowledged as one of Scandinavia’s biggest success stories, the brand, built from a love of textile design, has produced some of the most recognisable and colourful print designs to date. Pretty good considering, by CEO Mika Ihamuotila’s own admission, the brand hails from one of the darkest and coldest places in the world!
This cool and unparalleled brand has paved its own way on to the world’s fashion stage through its creativity and willingness to push the boundaries of textile design, all done with an inspiring and wholesome message.
The story of Marimekko is a great one......Most fashion houses and brands are built from a love of fashion and the willingness to share their designs with their audience. Marimekko on the other hand, is built on slightly different foundations. Yes, the brand loves fashion but it appears to go deeper than that. With its bold and unconventional patterns and designs, their ethos goes further than simply creating clothing that stands at the cutting edge of fashion – they also want to evoke happiness and confidence in their audience through the designs, something they continue to do season after season.
First and foremost, Marimekko is a textile designer. Founder Armi Raita wanted to use design and colour to bring happiness and hope at a time of the country’s devastation following the War. She began by sourcing young fresh designers and commissioning them to create the first of the unique pattern designs that Marimekko was to become renowned for. Her prerequisite was bold – she wanted to speak to her audience in a way they had never experienced before, and the language created is still being used today.

The Sixties saw Marimekko welcomed into the arms of the world’s fashion elite as their simple yet chic clothes caught the eye of style icon, Jackie Kennedy. She wore their dresses throughout JFK’s Presidential campaign and she chose Marimekko once again to wear for her cover of Sports Illustrated. Ever since, fashion forward ladies have been wearing their designs. Effortlessly chic, sleek and typically-Scandinavian cuts that provide the perfect backdrop for each and every print they develop, their designs are synonymous with all that is needed for the modern woman. Why else do you think they were repeatedly featured in the fashion-loving series Sex and the City?
As the brand that is ‘made for women, by women’ and wanting to encourage personalities to shine through clothing, each collection Marimekko shows reflects this exquisitely and 2014 is no different. Their Spring Summer 2014 Collection, which is brought to us by 23 Marimekko designers led by Head of Fashion Design, Noora Niinikoski, looks to reinforce this core message and is aptly titled ‘Freedom of Expression’.
Infused with vibrant colours that are contrasted with pastel shades and soft silhouettes that are off-set by geometric structures, the collection creates a fusion that is, above anything else, fun and playful.
Of course, the collection houses one of the most iconic prints that Marimekko has to offer. The Unikko ‘poppy’ print was the brainchild of designer Maija Isola in an act of defiance to Raita’s ‘no floral pattern’ rule. The single large-scale flower printed on a block colour background has become one of the most recognisable signatures of the Marimekko brand and, lucky for us, it shows no sign of taking a backseat any time soon as it celebrates its 50th birthday this year.

Abstract, hand-painted prints feature heavily in the collection, all of which have a story behind them – another hint of Marimekko’s dedication to bringing something more to the table. The circular ‘Konfetti’ pattern reminisces of confetti thrown at celebrations, the stripy ‘Inka’ pattern takes you to warm summer days on the beach and the ‘Teppi’ or Tape pattern conjures images of classic video games. They say a picture paints a thousand words and this is more relevant than ever at Marimekko, each designer creates a print with something in mind that they want to say to the wearer, a method that the company has perfected over the years.
We all have our own ideas of happiness and Marimekko wants to target yours through their designs. By wanting to create something that means something to each individual, the company have built a brand that is instantly recognisable. It has previously been written that upon seeing a Marimekko design, ‘there is never any doubt as to what the inside label would say’ – summing Marimekko up perfectly. Their designs are so striking, so eye-catching, so bold that it is impossible to ignore their beauty and I think it is this that will continue their success season after season.•

Runway, the interfashionable word spoken, and anticipated, by none other than the chic elite; a single word definition that celebrates the eagerly awaited arrival, of fashion week. Style-seekers flock to the hot-spots of fashion-conscious cities around the world, their magpie eye scouting the crowd for next season’s colour crush, or ultimate ‘IT’ arm candy; an electric vibe of both excitement and envy always present.
Runway, where the trend setters dominating our glossies and billboards, bring next season’s fashion forecast to life, each garment parades with a sense of pride; this is the moment to either rise to fame before the FROW, or be deemed by the editor behind darkened shades, as a disappointing, fashion faux pas.
Runway, the influential location leading us to create a vision of style envy.
Elizabeth Daisy.

It is no secret that when it comes to London Fashion Week, there is a new phenomenon happening on the streets outside the venue. Somerset House plays host to the real fashionistas who just cannot escape the Somerset Syndrome of being slave to trends for the ever-increasing pack of bloggers, and street-style photographers.Photographs by Sarah Holden and Emily Bailey.

33 of the finest students, 5 months of dedicated work and hundreds of phone calls later, the Leeds RAG [Raising and Giving] fashion show took centre stage in the city in February. In aid of two charities, and with the support of some heavyweight high-street brands, the show took on a fashion capital mood as the vol-unteer models pounded the runway in time to some scintillating beats, raising £1000s in the bargain.Photography by Voir.

From furniture to fashion, Belgian designer Raf Simons applies impeccable flare, passion for the past, and promise for the future, in the attention to detail he demonstrates, within the prestigious role he was appointed back in April 2012, as Dior’s creative director.
His take on this season’s sugary, sweet accents, see him continue the legacy of the leading French fashion house founded over 70 years since.
Dior’s SS14 ready-to-wear collection embraced elegance and femininity, through the power of pastels, metallic florals, and delicate fabrics, that captivate the eye with movement.
“I wanted a sense this season of a particular type of woman, a distinct new tribe, sophisticated and savage at the same time. I wanted to feel that you wouldn’t know quite where these women were coming from and where they were going to, that they exist in a new place of change and possibility.”
- Raf Simons
Simons showcased the art of power dressing curves, with the beauty of shape and structure in sharp tailored design, with sleeveless, satin tux jackets in soft hues. The shirt-style dress was a picture of collared sophistication, it’s simplicity adaptable from office to out-of-hours socialising, with its smart chic demeanour.
The collection throughout debuted a dreamy, floral infusion, just like that of the make-up creations in Dior’s Trianon Spring 2014 collection.
“Marie-Antoinette and her private domain, The Petit Trianon, inspire the Dior make-up creations of this season. Macaroon shades and Fontanges bow, the atmosphere of Versailles and its gardens flourishes, beautifully.”

you’ll reveal
a selection of five, delicately embossed powders, that create the limited edition
‘Trianon Palette’. A trio of pastel eyeshadows promise to create ‘glowing eyes’, including a soft,
chocolate brown, fresh, pistachio green, and subtle, bon bon pink; all of which feature a pearl finish, adding a hint of
stylish sparkle to the lids.
The palette also incorporates a matte black shadow that can be used as an eyeliner to frame eyes with a soft flick, aswell as a cotton candy pink blush, to complete a
fresh faced complexion.
Dior’s Trianon collection promotes a vision of fresh-faced beauty; with the
‘Pore Minimizer’ and ‘Glow Maximizer’, Dior customers can create an enviable, clear
complexion, radiating a healthy glow, with a touchable texture that is soft and silky.

The skin refining, matte primer offers a formula that promises to minimize the appearance of pores, and smooth fine lines. With a sheer and weightless finish, this skin savour evens out the complexion, and erases any sign of blemishes and break-outs. Its partner in prime is a radiance-booster that brightens skin tone, sculpts facial contours, and amplifies the skin’s natural light to create a spectacular glow.
Trianon lacquers talons with a lick of Dior Vernis, a chip-resistant formula that protects the pearly pigments, to ensure the glossy, high-shine, vibrant shades remain; from desk to dance floor.
Rouge Dior offers four signature shades, Rose Crinoline, Souveraine, Courtisane and Allegrese, to embrace a pout of style and sophistication. Each silhouette applies an accent of couture lip colour, representing a timeless elegance, whilst adding volume, shape and definition.
Whether it be removing the lid from a favoured shade of Rouge, or unclasping the palette of desired macaroon shades, discovering the contents within the Trianon collection is like watching the prettiest of buds bloom.
This season, discover the delights of the Trianon Collection, through the eyes of Tyen, Dior’s Colour Creator. The magic of a whimsical and romantic past, present and future, transcends from Couture to cosmetics, embracing the beauty that is both history and heritage.

So as we have probably already worked out, this season it’s all about pastels! For Spring/Summer beautiful soft shades of lemon sorbet, powder pink and blue, and mint green and lilac are everywhere. Pretty and girly are the words that spring to mind but when worn in makeup these shades can go a long way in really transforming the overall look. Pastels suit every skin tone, from very dark to ivory. For this shoot I carefully selected shades that would really make any eye colour ‘pop’!

skin tones but works especially well with blue eyes. Cool eyes against warm tones is the best secret to making them

As green is a cool colour is works better with warm eye colours like brown and hazel. All shades of green and blue can really make the darker eye colour deeper and more intense.

Lilac worn on the lids can really make blue and green
eyes look aqua, furthermore, any shade of purple works
well with any eye colour, even brown. Play around
with purples to make hazel eyes look more green and
blue eyes brighter.

LOCKSLUXEA blog about international hair trends - By Karen Dodds
![Page 135: Voir Fashion No7 : Dreaming In Dior](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022103103/568c4c0c1a28ab49169e984e/html5/thumbnails/135.jpg)
Spring/ Summer 2014Regular readers of Locks Luxe will know from past episodes that each season’s collections have quite a few storyboards with diverse trends, usually with a ‘theme’ that’s similar across the board. This season’s trends are no exception and there is a high fashion trend that’s suitable for each and every one of you; the art is in deciding which one or two are the right ones for you!!
Let’s take a walk through all the looks seen on the catwalk at London Fashion Week and see how we will be wearing our lush locks once the sun starts to peek!
Girly and QuirkyThis look was seen at the likes of Miu Miu and showed cat-like prints, lady-like demure skirts and knee or ankle socks. Hair here was young and fresh, undone done, with kinky texture in random sections. Not quite as bed-head as of late, but definitely none-too-groomed looking either. This would be fabulous for the Ingénue amongst us!
IllustrationThe Dramatic’s dream look! Graffiti type prints and arty designs using bold colours - Very ‘Shoreditch’! Hair at Issey Miyake was strong and bold with ‘Faux Hawks’ created by rolling or corn- weaving the hair at the sides to create as large a hawk as you dare! Definitely not one for the faint-hearted!!
![Page 136: Voir Fashion No7 : Dreaming In Dior](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022103103/568c4c0c1a28ab49169e984e/html5/thumbnails/136.jpg)
Gold RushExpensive-looking and bling! Metallic pleating, gold and silver lame, ruche, textured layering but always with high-shine mate-rials. Not to be outdone by the clothes, hair here at Proenza Schouler and Dries van Noten mirrored the clothing with ultra sleek, high-shine hair gathered at the nape from a low side part-ing. The ends were either sleek too or for a quirky look left fuller and bouncy, but still with glossy shine! The Romantics amongst you will revel in this look!
Tribal FolkloreHere the natural, hippy-esque type will love this storyboard! Jungle prints, tribal jewelry, rich colours and embroidery adornment were very predominant at Valentino, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen. Hair was braided in every which way you can think of! Let your imagination run wild with combinations of cornrows, plaits, weaves and braids. Think braided warriors!
Chess BoardBlack and white clothing was a strong look, using checks and stripes - both vertical an d horizontal to create a bold and startling look, seen at Giorgio Armani, Balmain and Ralph Lauren. Crisp and precise in design this trend will appeal to the Classic personality. Hair here needs to be well-groomed and precise to mirror the severity of the crisp cut and pattern of this trend.
Flower PowerRoses, poppies, camellias and other large blooms were used
![Page 137: Voir Fashion No7 : Dreaming In Dior](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022103103/568c4c0c1a28ab49169e984e/html5/thumbnails/137.jpg)
in print at designers such as Dennis Basso and Oscar de la Renta to create a really bold feminine look with rich reds. Hair will be feminine with a chic but rather messy finish. Midi length rules here, think Kirsten Dunst. So a mixture of random waves, not too precise and neat to create that sexy ‘I’ve just been totally ravished’ look!
Sporting SpiritLots of designers incorporated gymwear and shorts in their collec-tion, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger and Gucci, with stretch- to- fit materials and outdoor wear with indoor adaptations. Hair needs to reflect this with shorter crops or using a variety of headbands over very sleek ponytails and twists. Very low-key and not too elaborate silhouettes in hair and clothing really appeal to a gamine personality.
Lacy DaysRomance and ethereal 1950’s influence lace and polka dots were this storyboard’s message. The Ingénue’s perfect look as it’s ultra-feminine but still girly and retro! Lots of faux bobs were used on the runway for this look such as Oscar de la Renta and Nina Ricci. Long hair either pinned, tucked into chokers, scarves or high necklines to create the impression of a loose bob hair cut; either go for it with a blunt bob or get the look without going for the actual chop - sneaky!!
Trends that went through the entire collections were use of colour and transparent panels. Orange is the new Black and it was all over the catwalks. This will also reflect in hair colour with copper hues being a very big trend through Spring and Summer. At CRC we are already experimenting with copper heads from pale copper pieces, either hidden lights or Ombre ends on fairer hair to bolder stronger slices, weaves and panels in darker heads to full on flaming copper global applications.
![Page 138: Voir Fashion No7 : Dreaming In Dior](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022103103/568c4c0c1a28ab49169e984e/html5/thumbnails/138.jpg)
Powder Pink, with infusions of other pastel tones such as oceanic blues and greens were also visible, these were strong at Alexander Wang and Balenciaga, and will continue through this next season so the blond bombshells amongst you can continue to ring the changes with different pastel toners on your clear blond locks. Pantone brights were used in Summer faux furs for sleeveless tops, waistcoats and skirts at Prada and Miu Miu. With this trend in mind L’Oréal have created a superb range of semi-permanent colours called ‘CHALK ‘ with 8 different shades from blue to green to mauve to bronze and strong pantones to subtle pastels! These are applied at the salon with a take home phial to continue to create ‘interest sections’ on either fringes, ends, face framing... in fact anywhere! Great for weekends and parties!
But with the Tribal Folklore trend and Illustration both being the big bold stories with their use of strong colour and bold reds in Flower Power amongst others the really big story for hair will be strong and bold RED!
Again anticipating the up-coming trends those clever people at L’Oréal have just launched the Carmaline Reds range in INOA. Rich, fruity, and with a jewel like shine this range can be used for full head or partial tech-niques and the stylists at CRC are chomping at the bit to get their hands on them to start to create some show-stopping colour techniques. Due to be released as I write this column, they will be available for you to experiment with now! So book your complimentary consultation at either of the CRC salons as soon as you can!
Karen.

“Roast+Conch reconnects the world of cocoa growing with the luxury of eating it. This means
that the cocoa growers get a better life and consumers can buy safe in this knowledge.”
“It is incredibly rare that a chocolatier is involved in all parts of the process. By being there right
from the very start, at the roots of the cocoa tree, we’re able to be involved in every single stage.”
“We grow the cocoa, we harvest it, we roast it, grind it, conch it and make it into chocolate. Or we use it in its rawest form as savoury spice for our cuisine.”

“The ground floor is deliberately agricultural, with a design infused with the raw edges of a cocoa farm. It’s all designed to evoke the feel of a working plantation in Saint Lucia.”

“It’s an entirely new kind of dining, and cacao - not chocolate - is its real secret. Featuring contemporary dishes influenced by both the West Indies and Britain, roasted cocoa nibs are used throughout as a savoury spice, infusion and garnish.”
“It’s all about the nibs. Cocoa has a savoury tone. It’s got a crunch like a nut, it’s got a hint of bitterness that goes well with other foods’ natural sweetness. And when people taste it, it fascinates them.”

“Browse the boutique. Stay for a sociable lunch. Stroll to Bar Boucan for a cocoa-enhanced cocktail or two. And then sit down to dinner. You could spend the whole day at Roast+Conch exploring the amazingly creative use of cocoa. Roast+Conch offers a fresh and contemporary Anglo-West Indian menu enriched by the unique, savoury spice of roasted cocoa, and inspired by Hotel Chocolat’s hugely successful Boucan restaurant in Saint Lucia.”

“Following the striking neon restaurant sign and stroll up the wooden staircase, however, and the rustic mood begins to change. You are now entering the realm of cocoa luxury. You become conscious that it’s different, like you’re stepping into a plantation mansion house.”
“Various chemical reac-tions occur when cocoa beans are roasted, proper roasting is ntegral to good flavoured chocolate.”
