Peace of the good willed

Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will’. These two-millennium old verses from the gospel of

St. Luke send a reverberating sense of instant joy in the minds of allpeople of good will. Christmas is a feast of peace to the good willed.

It is the celebration of happiness, of holy and happy families, and of course, of the holy innocents, our children and the children of the entire world. The birth of Jesus brought hope for peace that the world hadnever known before. The dark age of ‘an eye for an eye’ and ‘a toothfor a tooth’, justice of brutality and beastlinessgave way to the Christian era of forgiveness, repentance and non-violence as preached by Jesusin the gospels. What followed was that thousandsand thousands of dedicated followers of Jesusfanned out to all parts of the world in all centuriespreaching the Good News, and rendering serviceto people in spiritual and temporal elds. True, peace does not exist in all parts of the worldtoday, but it does exist in most places. We canhave immense peace in our lives if only we have good will and a goodheart in our dealings within our families and with others. That is theessence of Christmas.

People’s Priests & Jubilees

The year 2010 has been an eventful one for priests. The Year of Priests was religiously observed all over the world and concluded

in June this year. In our archdiocese a Year for Priests & Vocations alsohas been observed throughout the year and ‘the special prayer’ recited in

churches and homes. Some of our priests celebrated the Silver Jubilee,Ruby Jubilee and Golden Jubilee of their priestly ordinations. In thisissue of The Voice of Delhi, we carry an interview with one such priest whose Golden Jubilee of ordination falls this month. To become aparish priest, to love people and to be loved by them, to look after thepeople and to be looked after by them, was his ambition - a true andtypical characteristic of any people’s priest. Priestly jubilees should asmuch be a joyous occasion for the people to celebrate as for the priests, because the priest comes from the people, works for the people andis in fact made by the people. Thus priests’ jubilees are milestones intheir long journey of singular devotion to shepherding Christ’s ock. As they reach that milestone, let us pray specially for them, encourage

them and congratulate them, for they chose to be priests to love andserve the people.

As we prepare ourselves during this advent to celebrate the joyousfeast of the birth of our Saviour, on behalf of the Editorial Board, I wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Shepherd’s VoiceMy brothers and sisters,

The Commonwealth Games came certainly as a great blessing to Delhi as the city put on a new look. It looked cleaner, greener and more beautiful. But what happened to those who made

the city beautiful like the gardeners, the masons, the painters, the manual labourers? They werenot to be seen anywhere. They were behind the scene, neither to see, nor to be seen. Isn’t that unfair?Similarly, those who slog in the elds to provide us bread to eat and those who sweat in our factoriesto provide us the innumerable things that make our life more comfortable are the last to benet fromtheir own products. But that is life in all its stark reality that unfolds itself before our very eyes everydayand often we fail to notice it.

Apart from the beautiful things, the CWG also provided an opportunity to let the stinking corruption surfaceand reveal its spread across politicians and bureaucrats, in high places and low and made us hang our headsin shame. Crores of rupees were just siphoned off and found their way into the pockets of a few at the costof thousands and millions who died of hunger, malnutrition and disease. Corruption kills, slowly but steadily, again hardly noticed by people. According to a UN report, 7000 children below the age of ve die every day in

India deprived of what is their due simply because greedy people without conscience have misappropriated itthrough illegal and immoral means.

The demonstration against corruption at Jantar Mantar on Sunday 14th November was an indicator thatordinary people are just getting fed up with corruption and want to get rid of it so that they leave behind to thecoming generation a corruption-free country. But is it possible? It denitely is if the citizens become conscious of  what corruption does to people, especially the poor and the marginalized ones and what an awakened populationis capable of doing when they are sold on a cause. The number of people gathered at Jantar Mantar was overten thousand and nobody could miss their enthusiasm to ght the cancer of corruption. Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, the founder of Parivartan, who managed to get together several religious leaders and secular-minded people and who wants to spread the idea of a corruption-free India through out the country, needs our full support.

Studies of the present systems to bring to book corrupt people have shown that they are ineffective. There

are so many limitations and loopholes in law that no culprit is really brought to book as the experience of thelast several years shows us. The lawmakers know of these loopholes and therefore have no fear to break them. For instance for police to take action against a minister, they have to get permission from the Prime Minister orChief Minister. Before the CBI can proceed with an enquiry, it again needs a nod from the government. The legalsystem in India too takes very long, sometimes as long as 20 years and then it is dismissed for lack of evidence. The corrupt also know how to cover their trails. It is said that the siphoned off money stacked in Swiss andforeign banks by Indians is enough to pay back all the Indian debts and remove poverty from India.

What we therefore need is an independent system like the Supreme Court in which people known fortheir honesty, transparency and integrity are selected and given the necessary powers to investigate and judgeand take appropriate action against the culprits. In order to strengthen the hands of the Government to evolvesuch a mechanism, we need to conscientize our people in a massive way so that the demand comes from thepeople. It is not going to be easy as the vested interests will react. But that is part of the challenge that we need

to face. The issue affects all sections of the people, political, religious, etc and must become a common man’scause and an important consideration in the coming election to the Parliament. When that happens it is likely that politicians and bureaucrats will also give in and support the cause.

Jesus not only did good to others like feeding the hungry, healing the sick and the variously challengedpeople, he also opposed evil forces openly and courageously. Had he only prayed and fasted he would not havebeen crucied. But he exposed the ritualism and legalism of the religious leaders. He sided with the victims of the prevailing anti-human religio-socio-economic system and exposed the untruths on which it was based. Hebecame a threat to the prevailing culture. Hence both the political and religious leaders conspired to get rid of him. Jesus made it clear too that to stand for truth and justice and to stand with the oppressed would necessarily

imply carrying of the cross. He not only warned the disciples about it, but also walked ahead of them, carrying the cross and dying on it. That was his way of ghting the evil forces in society.

We have no better alternative. If he chose the way of the cross, there isn’t any better one for us. We need, therefore, to be ready to bear the cross if we want to ghtcorruption. We need to resist the temptation to give bribes for getting things done fastfor us and we need to resist the temptation to take bribes. We need to feel proud of many

of our Christian brothers and sisters in public life who are known for their honesty andintegrity and thank God for their witnessing to their faith. This is the greatest sourceof joy for the Church and we need to follow their example. To stand for the Christian values we hold dear, to promote them and to oppose the forces that undermine themis the greatest contribution we can make to nation-building specically as Christians. The Lord expects this of us because that is our mission as disciples of Jesus in whomthe Risen Lord continues his presence and action in the world today.

Another major problem that confronts the world today is the problem of climate change. I had theopportunity to participate in a meeting of the representatives of the countries of the southern-hemispherenamely Africa, Asia, South America and the Pacic Islands and experts in the subject. It is an established factthat the countries of the northern-hemisphere which are greatly responsible for the problem, do not seem totake the problem as seriously as they should. They are leaving the South which is the main victim of the problem

created by them to fend for itself. If the south speaks in a united voice, it was felt, then there would be a positiveglobal response. All of us in our own little way can make a contribution by changing our lifestyle in many little ways as part of our responsibility for the generations to come.

Thus, considering that earth and all that is on it is God’s gift for all human beings so that all can live here with justice and dignity, it is the responsibility of us all to take care of the earth, even in our own small ways. Some of the things that all of us can do are: (a) Use as little water as possible for our bath and washing of clothes; use only water necessary to water the garden or wash the car etc. (b) Save on electricity by switching off lights, fans, computers, television sets, air-conditioners, coolers and geysers when not in use. Try to walk upto the second and third oors rather than use the lifts. (c) Save on fuel by using as little petrol, diesel or CNG,LPG as possible. Try and develop the habit of cycling to shorter distances and nd out if someone else is going in the direction so that you can hitch a ride on the motor-bike or in car. If the food is cooked, shut off the gas

immediately. (d) Save forest by saving on the use of as little paper as possible. In this age of emails, a lot canbe communicated through emails where all the material need not be printed out. They can remain safe on thecomputer where it is much easier to pull them out than from the led materials. (e) Save the forest also by going for steel furniture rather than stylish wooden furniture. Of course, you can be also active by planting trees andreporting any cutting of trees without permission in your neighbourhood.

We are drawing near Christmas. It’s a celebration that gives us hope. If a babe born in a stable for lack of adecent place, worked as a carpenter as he grew up, had no place of his own where he could stay and was nally crucied and killed could make such an impact on history, we also can make a difference provided like him we have no credentials but ourselves. That was the secret of his success. That is why he cannot be ignored orforgotten because he is the way, the truth and the life. He is the light of the world. He has the solutions to allour problems provided we make our own his vision and values and follow his way of transforming the world. He has chosen us for this purpose. May Christmas this year make us more deeply aware of our call and commit

ourselves to live up to it wholeheartedly.

I wish you all A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. May the hope that Christmas gives empoweryou to do great things for God and his people.

With warm regards and God bless,

 Yours sincerely in Christ,

(A series on 18th century Popes)

Pope Benedict XIV (Papacy: 1740-1758)

Pope Benedict XIV was born Prospero

Lorenzo Lambertini on 31st March 1675 atBologna, and was Pope from 17th August 1740to 3rd May 1758. At the age of thirteen he wentto the Collegium Clementianum in Rome wherehe studied rhetoric, philosophy, and theology. In1694, though only nineteen, Lambertini receivedthe degree of Doctor of Theology and Doctor Utriusque Juris (Canon and Civil Law). On the death

of Pope Innocent XII, he was made consistorial advocate by Pope ClementXI, and shortly afterwards Consultor of the Holy Ofce. In 1708 he wasappointed Promoter of the Faith; in 1712 CanonTheologian at the Vaticanand Assessor of the Congregation of Rites; in 1713 he was named DomesticPrelate; in 1718 Secretary of the Congregation of the Council; and in 1725

Titular Bishop of Theodosia. He was made Bishop of Ancona in 1727 andCardinal on 30th April, 1728. He was transferred to the Archbishopric of

Bologna in April, 1731 in succession to Lorenzo Corsini who had becomePope as Clement XII.

Benedict XIV is best known to history as a student and a scholar.Because of his wonderful gifts and his extraordinary success as Bishop of

Ancona, Pope Benedict XIII wished to transfer him to some position of greater responsibility affording a wider eld for the display of his powersand activity, but he replied in his usual jocose vein that no change of placecould make him other than what he was, cheerful, joyous, and the friendof the Pope. When he was transferred to Bologna in 1731 his energies andactivities seemed to redouble. He became all things to all men and is saidto have never allowed anyone to leave his presence dissatised or in anger, and without being strengthened and refreshed by his wisdom, advice, oradmonitions. His efforts were largely directed to the improvement of clericaleducation in his diocese. He reformed the programme of studies in his

seminary and drew up a new curriculum in which special stress was laid onthe study of Sacred Scripture and Patrology. When Clement XII died on 6th February, 1740, the fame of

Lambertini was at its highest. The conclave which commenced on 17 th February lasted for six months. After six months of fruitless efforts, theelection seemed no nearer than in the beginning. After several plans hadbeen tried to end the deadlock, Lambertini, whose name had been proposedas a compromise, addressed the conclave, saying: “If you wish to elect asaint, choose Gotti; a statesman, Aldobrandini; an honest man, elect me.”

These words spoken as much perhaps in jest as in earnest helped to end thedifculty. Lambertini was chosen and took the name of Benedict XIV inhonour of his friend and patron Pope Benedict XIII. As Pope, Lambertini

was no less energetic, brave, and unassuming than before his election. Hisgreat learning placed him in a position to deal successfully with ecclesiasticalsituations that needed reformation, and the broad Christian spirit which

animated his dealings with foreign powers removed the pressure andhostility of even Protestant courts and rulers. He was undoubtedly liberalin his political dealings, though he never lost sight of the essential interestsof the Church and religion. In purely spiritual and religious matters theinuence of Benedict left a lasting impression on the entire Church and itsadministration. His Bulls and Encyclicals, which played such an importantpart in dening and clarifying obscure and difcult points of ecclesiasticallaw, were learned treatises full of wisdom and scholarship. Pope BenedictXIV died on 8th May 1758 in Rome of natural causes at the age of 83 and

was buried in the Saint Peter’s Basilica. He was succeeded by Pope ClementXIII. ( Courtesy: New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia).

Golden Jubilee of Ordination

Rev. Fr. George Kureethra(in conversation with Grace David)

“To love people and to be loved by them”Fr. George Kureethra, Greetingsand felicitations from VOD. As wecelebrate the Golden Jubilee of your priestly ordination on December21st this year, what are your reminiscences of that day in 1960?

Many thanks for your felicitations.I was ordained a long wi th Fr. Thomson Panackal, who is now in the

United States, here in the Sacred HeartCathedral. In those days, before the Vatican Council II, no concelebrations were permitted. Both of us wereordained by the then Archbishop of Delhi, Dr. Joseph Fernandes. Archbishop Angelo was the commentator. Since the service was in Latin, Archbishop Angelo made the ceremony live with hiserudite commentary. I distinctly remember how, afterthe Communion, he recited in his sonorous voiceLacordaire’s famous poem The beautiful Hands of a Priest. That was very touching. In those days the Church in

Delhi was tiny. All the priests and religious came for theceremony, as also many lay people. There was a dinnerat St. Columba’s School Hall to felicitate us both.

A few relations of Fr. Thomson had come fromKerala for the ceremony, but I had told my peoplenot to come since travel would be very expensive anduncomfortable. Fifty years ago there were no sleepercoaches or reservations. Besides, it was very cold inDelhi. But I gave my people a consolation. I reachedhome the following day for my First Mass. In thosedays the First Mass was as important, if not more, asthe Ordination. I took an overnight ight to Madras(now Chennai), and from there a ight to Ernakulam(Kerala). The entire parish gathered to make it a joyfuloccasion.

What made you to accept the Call and was there any person or incident, which inspired you to becomea priest?

After completing my secondary school education,I joined the minor seminary in Ernakulam. I was not

at all a pious or religious mindedboy, but I owe my vocation tosomething I read in a biography of Pope Pius XII. It was said that thegreat ambition of the future Pope was to become pastor of a smallparish, to look after the people, andto be looked after by them. I likedthe idea and decided to become adiocesan priest. To become a parish

priest, to love people and to beloved by them was my ambition. My father vehemently opposedthe idea, as I was the most naughty of his children. He was sure that I

would not last long. Nevertheless, I joined the seminary. While I was in the minor seminary, an invitation fromthe then Archbishop of Delhi came to join Delhi. The invitation letter said that the archdiocese hadonly a handful of priests, mostly borrowed, and thatthe Archbishop wanted some seminarians to join hisdiocese. I volunteered and was sent to Allahabad for

seminary studies. I was ordained here in the Cathedralon 21 December 1960, at the age of 24.

Please tell us about your family background andof your near and dear ones back home now.

I was born on 4th June 1936 in Thykoodam, Keralain the Latin Archdiocese of Verapoly. My parents wereBastian and Veronica. I had two sisters, one older thanme, another younger. Both are no more. I have twoolder brothers and two younger brothers. They are allin Kerala.

Fifty years as a Priest, and ten years as a seminarian,i.e. a total of sixty years in the vineyard of the Lord. What are your feelings as of now?

I can only repeat the words of our BlessedMother, ‘My soul glories the Lord, my spirit rejoicesin God my Saviour. He has done great things for me,holy is His name.’ I feel that the Lord has carried mein his hands and held me close to his heart. I feeloverwhelmed by His love and generosity.

 The Golden Jubilarian,Fr. George Kureethra

December 2010

Give us a brief summary of your pastoral ministry. What were the most important and memorableevents/incidents during your long ministry.

My rst assignment was at St. Mary’s Church inOld Delhi as assistant, where I spent nearly two years. In 1962, I was sent to Rome to study Canon Law. I hada great time in Rome since my stay in Rome coincided with the Second Vatican Council. As Archbishop Angelo Fernandes was the Secretary General of theCBCI, I had an opportunity to serve as his secretary andthrough him to meet all the Indian Bishops and many  well-known gures of the Church. I found studies quiteeasy and used my vacations to live in several countriesof Europe, and also USA. In 1966, I completed my doctoral studies and was awarded a gold medal sinceI had scored hundred percent.

Upon my return to Delhi I was appointedassistant pastor at the Cathedral, in addition

to being Chancellor and Judicial Vicar (todeal with marriage annulment cases). Istarted a Kerala Catholic Youth Association, which was a hit with the Keralites living inDelhi. We staged several plays, screenedseveral lms and organized several toursincluding one to Bhakra Nangal (Punjab). We organized the first ever Retreat inMalayalam. We also organized a blood donation campevery Palm Sunday. I was the rst to donate blood. There were also many Bengali Catholics, migrantsfrom Bangladesh, who worked as cooks and bearers in

hotels, and lived in the Cathedral environs. I obtaineda Bengali Missal printed in Kolkata in the Romanscript, and celebrated Mass in Bengali. I also started aBengali Catholic Association, which is still functioning in Lakshmi Nagar to where most Bengali Catholicsof Delhi later migrated. Then I turned my attentionto the Tamil speaking community, but soon realizedthat I could not handle them, though I conducted theStations of the Cross in Tamil. There were no TamilMissals available in Roman script. Hence I approached Archbishop Angelo who borrowed a Tamil speaking priest from Pondicherry, Fr Lazar Montfort. In 1972,

I was appointed the rst Parish Priest of R K Puram, which in those days covered the present Hauz Khasand Vasant Vihar parishes. In 1979, upon the suddendemise of Fr. Pascal Rodrigues who was then the ParishPriest of Defence Colony, I was transferred there. I wasparish priest there for ten long years. Finally, I askedthe Archbishop to transfer me as assistant parish priestsomewhere. I was then made assistant parish priest inKingsway Camp. In 1992 Archbishop Alan broughtme to the Archbishop’s House.

I continued to be Chancellor and Judicial Vicar.I was asked by the Principal of Vidyajyoti to teachCanon Law there, a job I thoroughly enjoyed. Since Ihad been a Parish Priest and Judicial Vicar, I could makethe classes interesting by referring to practical problems.I also devoted more time to Marriage PreparationCourse for people who were planning to marry. I

devised a methodology centred on group dynamics, which the young people found quite interesting. SinceI was Judicial Vicar, I could share with them practicalproblems they might face in married life such asinterference by in-laws (many in-laws are outlaws!). The good job is being continued by Fr. Arnold David.I was also appointed Director of Prayer Movements. Iorganized the rst ever-charismatic convention in thenorth, led by Fr. Naikomparambil and team of Potta

Ashram, Kerala. It was a huge success, attendedby nine thousand people on the grounds of Krist Raja School. At the end of the Retreat,

Fr. Naikomparambil suggested the opening of a retreat house in Delhi. I announced acollection for this purpose on the spot, and itnetted two laks sixty eight thousand rupees. That was the beginning of the Divine RetreatCentre in Bathola, Faridabad.

Before the retreat for lay people, aretreat for Priests and Religious of the north was alsoorganized. About four hundred Priests and Nuns, fromShimla, Darjeeling, Agra and Ajmer came for the ve-day retreat. Present were also the Bishop of Udaipurand the present Bishop of Darjeeling. The logistics

of nding accommodation for these four hundred, feeding and transporting them was enormous, but themembers of our prayer groups handled them very efciently.

In 1994, I was appointed Rector of Pratiksha, thediocesan major seminary. In 1997, I was appointedParish Priest of Punjabi Bagh. I then resigned fromthe posts of Chancellor and Judicial Vicar. In 2003,I took premature retirement from parish ministry. The Archbishop wanted to appoint me a Parish Priestsomewhere, but I declined saying that I considered that

the most important ministry of a Parish Priest was to visit homes. Our Catholics mostly live on the fourthor fth oors, and it was impossible for me to climbthose steps. I was then appointed Associate Financial Administrator, and was given some lighter jobs. Butthe following year, I was asked to go to Punjab to helpstart a propedeutical seminary, a one-year training inspirituality for young seminarians. Fr. Mudavasserry SJ,the present Provincial of South Asia was the Rectorand I was the Spiritual Director. But after a little more

Make your Dream Come True...

100% Marriage assured!

“Impossible is Nothing”

than a year, I returned to Delhi forpersonal reasons, and I have beenresiding in the Clergy Home sincethen.

What in your opinion is the keyto fostering good pastor-peoplerelations for the spiritual, socialand financial growth of the parish?

I would like to summarize whatthe Code of Canon Law has to say: The Parish Priest has the obligationof ensuring that the Word of Godis proclaimed in its entirety to thoseliving in the parish; he is to foster works which promote the spirit of the Gospel, including its relevance to

social justice; he is to have a specialcare for the Catholic education of children and young people; He is to strive to know the faithful entrustedto his care. He is, therefore to visit their families, sharing their cares and anxieties. He is to help the sick and especially the dying. He is to be especially diligentin seeking out the poor, the suffering, the lonely, those who are exiled from their homeland, and thoseburdened with special difculties. The Parish Priest isto recognize and promote the specic role, which thelay members of Christ’s faithful have in the missionof the Church. He is to endeavor to ensure that the

faithful are concerned for the community of the parish, that they feel themselves to be members both of thediocese and of the universal Church. (Canons 528 and529). I have tried my best to obey the prescriptions of Canon Law.

What is your opinion about laity empowermentand the level of laity participation in Delhi Archdiocese, and the attitude of the clergy in thisrespect?

Barring a few exceptions, I think that the clergy

tries to empower the laity. However, the mentality that the clergy is at the service of people is not sopronounced. I am very very appreciative of the role thelaity is playing in our diocese, with great generosity andenthusiasm. The future of the Church belongs to thelaity. I am particularly happy that the Voice of Delhi isedited by a layperson, for free. Young people like you who devote so much time and energy to spread the Word of God and to be at the service of the Churchis a great inspiration to all.

How can we motivate thelaity, particularly the youthto come forward and render voluntary service to the Churchand the community?

By simply inviting individuals

to join you. Your enthusiasm, generosity, love and especially thejoy you radiate can be captivating. You have to be a magnet. Many people are just waiting to beinvited.

Being in the Clergy Home, how do you spend your time?

Three years ago, I wasdiagnosed with a rare blooddisorder, which necessitates

monthly blood transfusion. I alsodeveloped arthritis of both knees, conning me to theClergy Home where I am the Director. I have now time to enjoy my retirement. I love reading, listening toclassical music, studying the Bible and watching AnimalPlanet and Discovery. Internet helps me to be in touch with others through emails.

 World Union of Catholic Women’s

Organization (WUCWO)Centenary General Assembly, Jerusalem, October 2010

Chinnamma Jacob

The World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations celebrated 100 years of service by women, for women, for the Church and society at the Pontical Institute Notre Dame of Jerusa lem, Israel from Oct. 5-14, 2010. The Theme of the Assembly was “YOU WILL BE MY

WITNESSES (Acts 1:8)”. About 500 delegates from 60 countries were in the Holy City to discuss marriageand family life, as well as to meet local Christians and nd out about their lives in the Holy Land.

On 6th October 2010, theCentenary Assembly commenced with the Holy Eucharist celebratedby the Latin Patriarch of Jerusa-lem His Beatitude Fouad Twal. Inhis homily he formally welcomed

us to Jerusalem, and also ap-pealed to pray for peace and unity among the people who live in theHoly Land. He told us that there were just 10,000 Christians left inthe Holy land and their numberis diminishing. He referred toChristians who lived there as the‘Living Stones’ whose presence was of utmost importance tothe survival of Christians in theHoly Land the place where Jesus

established His Church on earth. In Jerusalem, Pentecost markedthe birth of the Church and from there it spread allover the world. The prelate conveyed his blessings toall the participants.

The Inaugural session began on the 6th afternoon with WUCWO President General Karen Hurley  welcoming the gathering. H.E. Antonio Franco, Apostolic Nuncio to Israel and Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine read the Papal Message sentby His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Thereafter, all

the participants were introduced country wise. Witha formal announcement the WUCWO Centenary  Assembly was opened. The following days saw anelaborate programme of Study Days from Oct. 6th to8th and the Statutory Assembly from Oct. 9 th to 11th at the Notre Dame Auditorium. 12th-14th were forpilgrimage to Galilee. Most afternoons were spent inpilgrimage, visiting the holy sites. Everyday the sessionsbegan with a short spiritual reection by Fr. GianMaria Polidoro, Ecclesiastical Assistant to WUCWO.

October 8th was the last day of theStudy Days of the Conference. TheStatutory Assembly was held fromOctober 9th to 11th..  This World Assembly of WUCWO 2010 heldin the Holy Land was besides many

things, a deep and strong spiritualexperience. As women coming from different countries and cross-sections of various cultures, we felt very unique as one body of Catholic women, standing at the thresholdof the next 100 years of our greatunion, the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations, ready tostep forward with a fervent resolveto serve others with Love and tospread God’s Kingdom in this

world as ‘Witnesses of Christ’. The Assembly united us and enabled

us to study and pray together, feeling the presenceof the Holy Spirit working through other womenparticipants.

At the Assembly held in Jerusalem, each region was in charge of the liturgy everyday and for the AsiaPacic Region, I was carrying the offertory gift. I took from India the statue of Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata. I also took about 700 medals and pictures of the Mother. When we started distributing them, thedelegates started asking, ‘can I have one more, I want

to give to my grandmother?, another one said I wantto give Mother Teresa’s picture to my children or to my grandchildren or to my sister’, it was like that. Other women also said the same thing. Everybody wantedmore of medals and pictures. Luckily, I had extra medalsand pictures. They all said ‘we love her! we love Mother Teresa’. etc. etc. I was really thrilled the exited whenthey received Blessed Mother Teresa’s pictures. Now I really understood how the world recognises BlessedMother Teresa.

‘For more Priests from our families’

Mr. Dominic Savioof the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Dwarka

(In conversation with Grace David)Mr. Dominic Savio, Greetingsfrom VOD Team. Tell us inbrief about how you begangetting involved with Churchactivities.

Being new to the Mayur Vihar parish way back in 1985 when Rev. Fr. Cirilo Rodrigues was the pari sh pr ie st , I wasinvolved in doing karseva to

make a road for the temporary church building. That was thebeginning. From 1987 till 1991, Ichanged my residence to Rohiniand then to Mehrauli. When Imoved to Janakpuri in 1991, I waselected a parish council memberof Mahima Church representing D-2 block. During that time I was involved in organising the parish feast and incollection of the church support fund. That gave mean opportunity to visit all the families in the area and

helped me to get to know them on a personal level. Weused to organise Holy Rosary throughout the month of May and October in all the families in D-2 block along  with the Adoration Sisters. During the Jubilee Year of the Church in 2000, I had the opportunity of visiting many orphanages and old age homes, representing the parish council to give nancial support to thoseinstitutions. This was done every month during thatyear. When I moved to Dwarka in 2003, I was againmade a member of the parish council and later in2004 the then Parish Priest, Fr. Vivian selected me tobecome a Eucharistic Minister. Currently, I am also a

member of the Parish Finance Committee where I helpin collecting the church support fund.

 About your parish?

Ours is a vibrant and relatively young parishunder the able leadership of Fr. Charles D’Souza, a veteran himself. Apart from an active Parish Council, we have in our parish the Finance Committee, Legionof Mary, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Parish Youth and Catholic Association.

What are your present activities for the churchand society?

At present, I am part of the Parish Finance

Committee and also a Eucharistic Minister. In thesociety, I try to reach out to people and lend a helping hand wherever I can.

What about Small Christian Communities (SCC)in your parish?

The Small Christian Communities in our par-ish are active. There are 28 such units and they meetregularly for prayer.

What are the key factors that can motivate thelaity to render service to the church and contribute

nancially?

I have seen that most of the people are shy tocome forward and participate in the activities of thechurch. Many come only for the Sunday worship andfeel satised after having accomplished their obligation. To bring them out of this cocoon, the Parish Priest hasa very important role to play. I am sure when the Priests,or even the councillors or leaders of any church grouppersuade them and give them due respect, many will

come forward with enthusiasm. To motivate them tocontribute nancially, again we have to be transparent inthe utilisation of the money we collect, and also makeour dealings visible. Also the life style of priests andreligious, the way they spend money on clothes or onluxuries can also sometimes act as a deterring factor.

What is your sincere opinion about the level of laity participation in your parish and the Delhi Archdiocese and what more can be done?

In our parish we have relatively young parishio-ners, most of whom are working in MNCs and arefairly well-to-do. Sometimes, I feel that many of themdo not have time to spare, but are ready to contributenancially for any cause. Finance is important, butpersonal involvement and participation are much moreimportant. This is where the Parish Priest has to play his role as a Good Shepherd in motivating people andkeeping them together. We are lucky to have such a

Parish Priest and Assistant Parish Priest who can actas guiding lights to all of us, the parishioners.

What is the attitude of the Clergy with regard tolaity participation and laity empowerment in theChurch?

Sometimes the clergy may feel that laity participation would mean that they would lose theirimportance and people may take them for granted. Butin my opinion, it is not true. More the participationof the laity, greater the ease of running the parish, provided the roles of all involved are clearly dened.

With regard to our priests, are they dischargingtheir mission and ministry in the way expectedof them by the Church or is there any need forimprovement/change?

In most of the cases our priests are living theirmission as is expected of them. To make them moreaccountable, why not form a committee of three ormore priests to visit the churches at least once a yearand to audit the affairs of each parish. This is something like internal auditing in companies. They should also

interact with the laity of the visiting parishes. What are your wishes for your parish and theDelhi Archdiocese for the present and the fu-ture?

Right now our parish is well run and people arefriendly and cooperative. I wish this to continue infuture.. For the Archdiocese my wish is that we wouldhave more priests from our families so that the parishas an institution can keep running.

 Tell us something about yourself.

Solemnity of Christ The King Alan Victor, Parish Youth Member

Behind every successful man is a woman. And to adda metaphorical element to this well known saying, behind

every successful parish is a dedicated laity. The feast of Christthe King celebration in St. Francis De Sales Church, Janak Puriholds testimony to this. The planning and administration of thecelebrations could not have been possible without the core of our parish: the Youth, the Women’s Cell, Hindi Mass Group andthe Parish Council. With context to the procession, the ParishCouncil managed the 30 minute procession diligently. To sumit up, it looked more like a slice of traditional India, with thebright coloured South Indian umbrellas that looked so majestic, betting our King; placards amplifying the message of Christ toour non-Christian brethren. Undoubtedly, the most splendid sight of the procession

lay in the carrying of the Monstrance by Rev.Fr. T P Joseph, Parish Priest, St. Francis DeSales Church. He was surrounded by 10 altarservers making it a magnicent sight. Rev FrMelroy Almeida, Principal, St. Francis DeSales School was the main celebrant of theday’s Eucharist. The homily was deliveredby Rev. Fr. Vincent Minj, MSFS. After theMass, tea and snacks were served to theparishioners.  The public procession of Christ The King

Hosted by the EastDelhi parishes of the Mother of Perpetual Succour, Assumption (Syro-Malabar), St. George’s (Syro-Malankara)and Prabhu Prakash Girja, the Holy Eucharist was celebrated followed by a procession and concluding Bene-diction on the grounds of St. Mary’s School, Mayur Vihar Phase III on Sunday the 21st November 2010. Ourbeloved shepherd, His Grace Most Rev. Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao had kindly consented to join hisEast Delhi ock in the celebrations. Archbishop Vincent was the main celebrant at the concelebrated Mass. The owers that adorned the altar with their different hues and colurs were symbolic of the beautiful blend

not only of the three rites, but also of the different cultures, languages and people that make up the elevenparishes of East Delhi. The three readings were done in English, Malayalam and Hindi respectively as also thePrayer of the Faithful. Hymns in the three languages enhanced the celebration of the Eucharist. The processionthat followed, interspersed with oats and recitation of the Rosary and hymns as it wound its way through thelanes and by lanes of Mayur Vihar Phase III, was a testimony to our non- Christian neighbours of our faithand devotion. About 4000 faithful participated in the feast. The service ended with Benediction and fellow-ship meal. Highly commendable and noteworthy was the cooperation, collaboration, love, joy and sharing that went into the preparation and execution of the entire function making us a communion of communities. Anexemplary demonstration of unity in diversity! ( Photos and videos of the function can be downloaded fromthe parish website: www.motherofperpetualsuccorchurch.org).

Children’s Day celebrated with loving fervourS. Santiago

The Holy Eucharist offered by our Parish

Before the Holy Masscommenced, Mrs. Sheila Mash, Vice Presidentof the Parish Council highlighted the Chil-dren’s Day, the World Communications Day and the birthday of Fr. Asis Rodrigues S.J. in his inspiring and very passionate homily put before the faithful very effectively Jesus Christ as the role model

for children, good communicators and a holy priestly life. At the conclusion of the Holy Mass, Fr. Santosh was greeted with owers by a young parishioner on behalf of all the faithful. Thereafter,Mr. S. Santiago, President, Catholic Association made a brief reection particularly on ‘Children’s Day’, andreminded the faithful that it was also the birthday of our rst Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the Architect of Modern India, who was the great loving “Chacha Nehru” in his time for all the children acrossour motherland. During the reection, all the faithful were enlightened on the status of children in our coun-try and their future and particularly on the important triple rights of children namely children’s right to life, right to education and right to knowledge and skills to become competent workers in nation building. TheMillennium Development Goal of ‘reduction of child morality’, ‘promotion of universal free and compulsory education’ and ‘promotion of full employment’ were thus relevantly understood. The 60 children present werespecially blessed one by one by Fr. Santosh and were treated with kinder-joy chocolate eggs offered by Mrs.

Violetta Scolt and Mr. A.Z. Fernandez, ofce bearers of the Catholic Association. After the Holy Eucharist, all the faithful sang happy birthday to Fr. ‘Marian Fest 2010’ by Divine Retreat Ashram, FaridabadReji Mathews

The Marian Fest’ which is regularly conducted by Di vine Retreat Ashram, Faridabad every year for the

past several years, was held this year on Sunday, 24th October 2010 at the Diocesan Community Centre, Gol

Dak Khana, New Delhi. The programme commencedat 9.00 am with a Marian Rally, followed by Rosary, proclamation of the Word of God, Holy Eucharistcelebrated by Rev. Fr. Maria Susai, the Parish Priest of theSacred Heart Cathedral, New Delhi, Adoration etc. Theday long programme concluded in the evening. A largenumber of faithful took part in the ‘Marian Fest 2010’.

Rev. Fr. Maria Susai inaugurating the ‘Marian Fest 2010’

Dear Editor,

It was a pleasure to read about His Grace VincentM. Concessao’s decade of shepherding the ock

of Delhi. Those of us who have had the privilegeof interacting with him are always amazed at hissimplicity and warmth. My fellow parishioner, Mr.Emmanuel Johnson, who plays a major role in the SCCmovement, once told me how astonished people fromother dioceses were at an SCC convention in Nagpur

some years ago. They just could not believe that thisfriendly person was the Archbishop of the capital of India. For many of them, senior church ofcials alltoo often came across as self-important bureaucrats- in complete contrast to our Archbishop. To mostlay people this is what a loving shepherd should look like.

And then there was a real treat in the same issue,in the form of Fr. George Kureethra’s sparkling

account of his vocation. I have always known of Fr.Kureethra’s talent to write simply and interesting aboutserious subjects. Fr. Kureethra has indeed lived a fulllife, with diverse experiences inside and outside Delhiand India - and yet, unlike others with far less exposure,he is able to give deep insights with utter modesty andan enviable lightness of touch. Aspiring writers couldtake a leaf out of his writings. People like me who have

the privilege of running into him off and on, know that he now keeps indifferent health. And yet, he neverseems to lose his clarity of mind, his optimism or hispuckish humour. I personally would like to see muchmore of him in the VOD.

*Sol Solemnity: A Solemnity of the RomanCatholic Church is a principal holy day in theliturgical calendar, usually commemorating an

event in the life of Jesus, Mother Mary or otherimportant saints. The observance generally begins

with the vigil on the evening before the actual dateof the feast.

The word is taken from the Latin sollemnitas , a termof uncertain origin but possibly derived from sollus  (whole) and annus (year), indicating a celebrationoccurring at yearly intervals. The Church always

celebrates each solemnity every year.
