I am excited about this week’s cover story on the recall effort in the City of San Bernardino.

I am a San Bernardino girl. I was born at Community Hospital of San Bernardino. Attended Muscott Elementary, Richardson PREP Hi, San Bernardino High School, and Cal State San Bernardino. I was a Brownie and Girl Scout, and took day trips to Lytle Creek with my mother the scout leader and the other girls from my troop. On Sundays I attended church at St. Paul AME Church on 21st Street. For the first five years of my life my family attended Delmann Heights Four Square Church off California Street. As a young girl I would take the Omintrans bus down to the Carousel Mall with my older sister Lynn to go to the movies or shop at JC Penney’s. On special occasions my mother would take us to The Harris Company to buy Easter dresses, or Christmas dresses, or holiday presents, or just to window shop. That beautiful building is currently sitting empty under the ownership of foreign interests. Hardy Brown College Prep, the high performing charter school named in honor of my father, is the only bright spot now located in that deserted edifice. As a teenager, I spent afternoons at the Dorothy Inghram Library, and remember being inspired by the librarian Ms. Mary Chartier to read, read, and read some more. Rain or shine – but always rain – I would attend the annual Orange Show with my family and later my friends. It was a mandatory springtime ritual. My first jobs were given to me by my Westside neighbor, Bob Parker: the first one when I turned 15 was phone banking for local candidates, the second was at his Pioneer Chicken franchise on the corner of Baseline Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue. A Walgreens Pharmacy now sits at that location. My family’s business was located on Baseline and Muscott in a converted liquor store we shared with Sam Martin and his American News. As a young adult, I was a seasonal campaign worker for Congressman George Brown, and my job was canvassing the various Westside neighborhoods each election season on his behalf. For years each February I served as one of the announcers for the Black History Parade, and would sit with Mr. Parker and Jeff Hill on the platform in front of Tillie’s Mortuary and enjoy the spectacle of drill teams, and marching bands, and the endless procession of cars. I spent the first two decades of my life in San Bernardino, and when my husband and I were ready to buy our first home, we found an unexpected surprise in a little neighborhood above 30th street, a tri-level Spanish style 1920’s bungalow. Even when I attempted to leave the city I called home for over 25 years, I couldn’t let go. I’m currently a board member for the hospital where I was born. I teach every spring at the university I graduated from. And I sit on the board of the downtown San Bernardino charter school that bears my father’s name. Although I am no longer a resident, I care about the city and want it to thrive. I know the San Bernardino of my youth was far from idyllic. There was crime, there was poverty, and there was blight. But over the decades I have watched the city I love slowly deteriorate. I’ve watched property values decline and the number of crime-ridden neighborhoods increase. I’ve watched businesses move away and major streets become highways of blight and neglect. I’ve watched the city’s leadership serve special interests and not the people who elected them to office. And I’ve watched them show more concern for battling each other than fighting for the good of the city. It’s exciting to see the people of the city of my youth become energized and engaged again. I am a believer in San Bernardino…that change is possible and transformation is inevitable.

W hen most people hear the word recall, they think consumer protection of faulty or defective products being removed from

the market place for public safety. The actions by these companies cost millions of dollars but not as much in public confidence if no recall is taken. In the short run, they take a hit but it sends a message to the public “you can trust us.” Now we have citizens in the City of San Bernardino saying we have had enough of misguided leadership from the current and past mayors, city attorney, some council members and the public safety employee associations, specifically the police and firefighters. I heard last week that some prominent citizens in San Bernardino began a petition to recall the San Bernardino mayor, city attorney, and the entire city council. To some people this might seem to be drastic, while others might be asking, “what took them so long?” Back in the early 70’s, I had some personal involvement in one recall. As a matter of fact, I cut my political teeth on that recall and the Westside Action Group (WAG) was born. Also in San Bernardino during the 70’s five school board members were swept from office during a recall election over the issue of bussing. In recent California history, Governor Gray Davis was recalled from office and Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor. Presently, a group of citizens in Fontana gathered enough signatures to move forward to recall two members of the school board. That election will take place this summer. Past mayors gave away the shop including inappropriate use of redevelopment funds by investing in bad projects and not using the funds as they were supposed to be used. City leaders have allowed outside investors from Japan and Spain to buy prime downtown properties that now sit empty and bring down the value of other businesses in the city. According to the city attorney, who is supposed to be the “watchdog” of our local government and who helped agree to these actions, there is nothing the city can do. The current council and city attorney seem beholden to the public safety associations who fund their campaigns. These elected officials will not vote against any changes in these departments which

San Bernardino City Citizens Might be Justified for Recall

consume over 73% of the city’s budget with 90% of them living in other cities which amounts to $40 million leaving the city. These public safety employees pay no property taxes to the city, pay no utility taxes to the city, pay no sales taxes in the city, do not educate their children in the city, yet they tell the council how to vote against the best interest of their citizens. The mayor appears to be afraid to veto any actions approved by the council that he knows is not in the best interest of the city. Thus businesses are hesitant to move into or do business in the city. I have also heard of business leaders being afraid to speak out because some of the city’s elected officials are vindictive and will take action against them or any project they might bring before the council. This is absurd and the mayor and city manager should direct any employee that is approached by any elected official to report it to them so this kind of action can be brought out into the open. No employee should be afraid to report such actions. One might ask why has it taken so long to take out recall petitions? I think it is because concerned citizens now realize the city is not safer even with these high public safety salaries. They also have watched the poverty rate rise and the unemployment rate remain higher than other cities around them. And it is their property values going down, as their neighbors are moving out of the city. These residents are saying their city is worth fighting for: this city they raised their children up in; this city that their mothers and fathers help build; where they went to visit grandparents and play in the yards and even the streets without fear of being gunned down by a stray bullet or hit by an under the influence driver. This city that allowed them to establish law firms, medical practices, have thriving hospitals, profitable auto dealerships; the city that President Lyndon B. Johnson worked in as an elevator operator; the city that provided Sammy Davis Jr. with lifesaving healthcare; and the city that birthed McDonald’s, the food services innovator and one of the most recognizable brands in the world. In my opinion, these citizens have in their mind enough justifiable reasons to recall these elected officials. They are saying we must turn this city around and in the words of Malcolm X, “by any means necessary.”

F ormer Riverside City Council member Ameal Moore recently succumbed to cancer at the age of 78. He was an important figure in the Riverside

community where he lived for over 50 years. Noted as being Riverside’s second Black councilman, Moore served three terms on Riverside City Council from January 1994 – February 2006, representing Ward 2 which encompasses the Eastside, parts of the University area, Sycamore Canyon and Canyon Crest. Moore was well respected in the community and had a great passion for the city where he lived and served. His many notable accomplishments include being influential in the creation of Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park, improvements along University Avenue, and after the Tyisha Miller police shooting incident he was instrumental in the creation of a multicultural council and the Community Police Review Commission. He served on the city parking, traffic and planning commissions and was also actively involved in his church. “Ameal was a friend who always tried to do the right thing. He was a man of deep convictions and will be missed from teaching Sunday School at Park Avenue Baptist Church, to just being in our presence,” said Dell Roberts, president of the Black History Parade and Expo.

City Mourns the Loss of Former Riverside City Council Member Ameal MooreBy Natasha Simone Ferguson Moore wrote a book which was released in

January of this year entitled, “My Memoirs: Climbing Up the Downstair Escalator,” available on Amazon.com. He was born in Mississippi and served eight years in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1962 and moved to Riverside. Described by many as a quiet, compassionate gentleman, Moore positively impacted many lives. “Our hero, our friend, who came, saw, and conquered our Eastside community. He was a quiet family man, a good husband, and a great public servant who gave much and expected nothing in return. He’ll be missed but we’ll cherish his memory through his recently published book,” said Rose Mayes, President of Riverside Fair Housing Council. NAACP-Riverside President Waudieur “Woodie” Rucker-Hughes expressed her thoughts about this remarkable leader. “Ameal has known me since I was a little girl. I looked up to him and have always regarded him as a principled man of God and a statesman who served as past president of our Riverside Branch, then succeeded Jack Clarke as Ward 2 Councilman. He was a great role model and leader. Despite his encounter with racism, hatred and sorrow, he never allowed those experiences to define him or make him bitter, negative or vindictive. He always spoke truth and power. He was my friend and mentor and will be missed.” On the City of Riverside website, Mayor Rusty

Bailey offered the following words of condolence: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of former Council Member Ameal Moore…his contributions to the city range from leadership in Riverside’s sustainability efforts, working tirelessly to improve Riverside’s quality of life, and bringing community services for the underserved. His commitment to Riverside was recently recognized by a unanimous vote of the City Council authorizing the naming of Sycamore Canyon Nature Center at Sycamore Canyon Park in his name just less than two weeks ago.” Moore is survived by his wife, Henrietta; sons Steve, Jeffery and Carl; and four grandchildren. The funeral services will be held Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11:00am. at Park Avenue Baptist Church, 1910 Martin Luther King Blvd. Riverside, CA 92507.

N early 1,600 students from Jefferson, Madison, Emerson, and Longfellow Elementary Schools recently spent the

day learning how environmental scientists and aeronautical engineers use science and math to explore space and protect the environment during the 15th annual Space Day – “Exploring Our Planet – Today and Tomorrow,” sponsored by Lockheed Martin. This year’s Space Day, held at Riverside’s Jefferson Elementary School, offered students the opportunity to experience and participate in more than 50 hands-on activity stations with space exploration and environmental related themes. Students from each elementary school also participated in an essay contest; this year’s theme was “Why is it important to study math, science and engineering?” The essay contest winners were honored during an awards ceremony with certificates and a backpack of gifts courtesy of Lockheed Martin. Mayor Rusty Bailey presented Maria Ortega, principal at Jefferson Elementary School, with a Mayoral Proclamation naming April 19, 2013, the City of Riverside’s official “Space Day.” “Space Day is one of my favorite days as an educator because of the opportunity it provides our students to see math and science at work while participating in hands-on activities,” said Ortega. “The students are able to apply their learning while engaging with professionals who work in these fields every day.” Over the course of six hours, activity stations provided students with unique, first-hand learning opportunities as they experienced the beauty and magic of the stars in a miniature planetarium, learned about aerodynamics and airfoils by operating a radio-controlled helicopter, and felt momentum as they floated on a cushion of air 1/4 inch off the ground on a hovercraft. They explored how to clean up water and soil, the importance of recycling, and learned ways they can personally help protect the environment. The students witnessed rocketry demonstrations and student-designed robotic technology, learned about fire trucks and

traffic reconstruction from their local fire and police departments, and participated in numerous activities provided by The Traveling Space Museum. Keynote Speaker George Noory, well-known host of the internationally syndicated program Coast to Coast AM and the new TV series Beyond Belief with George Noory, www.gaiamtv.com/george, presented an inspiring and engaging presentation to students on the importance of learning math, science and technology and always being curious so they could become lifelong learners. Noory told the students that when he was about their age, he had an experience that made him want to learn as much as he could about many different things. “Learning has become a lifelong, fun experience for me and I still enjoy learning something new every day. In my job as a radio host, I talk to people about the ways they are protecting our planet and cleaning up our environment. I see and hear about the latest science experiments underway to reach new solar systems and discover new planets. I learn about government, history, technology, math and engineering. I hear what others think our world will be like years from now and what it might have been like in the past,” said Noory. He challenged the youngsters to always be

curious, ask questions, seek answers and find their own truth. Lockheed Martin recognizes a growing need for engineers and scientists to maintain competitiveness in a global marketplace. Space Day provides the catalyst for students to see first-hand the numerous possibilities available to their futures. “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with the Riverside Unified School District and local elementary schools to offer students this unique type of learning experience,” said Gary Cambre, Lockheed Martin Senior Communications Manager for Energy, Environment, Safety and Health. “Today’s students will guide our future as they become environmental scientists, mathematicians, astronauts, engineers and computer programmers. Our objective is to inspire them to achieve their goals by demonstrating the importance of learning math and science and continuing their education through high school, college and beyond.” The first Riverside Space Day took place at Grant Elementary School in 1999 with 370 students and nine activity stations. The program has since quadrupled in size – this year includes nearly 1,600 students from four local elementary schools and more than 50 activity stations.

This legislation would promote partnerships like those that Riverside Community College District’s Nursing Program has with local healthcare providers.

RepresentativeMark Takano41st District of California

Congressman Takano is a former educator and college trustee for the Riverside Community College District. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives his district encompasses the communities of Riverside, Moreno Valley, Jurupa Valley and Perris.

He serves on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.

A ll parents dream that their children will be able to do better and have more than themselves. However, the Great Recession

that began in 2007 has caused a major step back in the realization of that dream. While nearly every demographic has struggled in the Great Recession, young Americans have suffered the most as the unemployment rate for Americans aged 16-24 is 16.2%, more than double the national average. Many young people are forced to return home to live with their parents after college, as they are unable to find work and begin building lives of their own. Studies have shown that this long period of unemployment for young people will cost them more than $20 billion over the next decade. Congress can and should do something to help our nation’s young people. Earlier this month, I introduced the “Job Skills for America’s Students” Act to do just that. This legislation encourages partnerships between employers and educational institutions by providing employers with a $2,000 tax credit per student participating in a qualified technical training and skills program. Employers that participate and bring students on will have a total credit amount cap of

Helping Students Find Work$10,000 per year. This legislation would promote partnerships like those that Riverside Community College District’s Nursing Program has with local healthcare providers. The nursing program’s extensive partnerships allow students to train in real-life settings, learn to use the most up-to-date equipment and nursing methods, and be recruited by local healthcare providers after graduation. Partnerships like these have contributed

to the RCC Nursing Program being recognized as the top nursing program in California. Many of America’s fastest growing industries involve a d v a n c e d m a n u f a c t u r i n g and clean energy.

These businesses require a highly-skilled workforce, but are struggling to find workers that possess the technical training to meet their needs. With one study showing that 600,000 manufacturing jobs remain unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates, we must address the growing skills-gap in our country. Getting our economy back on track will require putting people of all ages back to work. By making the transition from college to work easier for young Americans, we can create a strong, stable economy for generations to come.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU“This is beautiful. Thank you especially for your tribute to our beloved Dorothy Grant.”

T he worse thing a parent can ever experience is the death of a child. However, the depth of that loss may be intensified when you learn

that your child has allegedly committed a heinous crime. When children of any age are implicated in a violent attack, especially one that is the focus of media attention all over the world, it may be difficult to believe that someone you raised and love could do such a horrible and senseless thing.

The parents of the Boston bombing suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhai Tsarnaev are no different. Zubeidat and Anzor Tsarnaev maintain their sons’ innocence, even with overwhelming evidence of their guilt. Parents may have a hard time accepting the idea that the children they raised and love could become monsters with no regard for the sanctity of human life.

While very little is known about this family and the dynamics within the family, and we do not know for sure that the parents were unaware of any terrorist ties to their children, it is safe to say that these parents are not faring very well psychologically and emotionally during this time.

From a psychological perspective, these parents and others in their situation are undoubtedly going through their own process of grief, which usually begins with denial. It tends to be easier to remain in that first stage of the grief process, especially if one is questioning oneself about where one went wrong as a parent, and/or feeling burdened down with feelings of guilt and shame. The constant internal questioning a parent may engage in may cause the parent to look for others to blame, which allows the parent to lose touch with reality.

My Child’s No MonsterIt may also be difficult for a parent to reconcile what they believe about their children with what others believe about them. However, failure to move successfully through the stages of grief and loss successfully can create mental health challenges for them. This is especially probable when the reality is much too difficult to face. Not only do these parents have to deal with the death of one of their sons and the possible death of the other, but they also have to deal with losing their image of who their sons are.

Now they are left with trying to understand how and why their sons were capable of doing such horrible things, and what role they may have played in their sons’ behaviors. This article is in no way designed to minimize the pain and suffering of the victims of the acts allegedly perpetrated by the Tsarnaev brothers.

The tragedy has been monumental for the family, friends, and the entire world of all those affected by this horrific attack. Rather, it is to shed light on the fact that no one walks away unscathed when troubled people act out with disregard for others, even themselves. Further, it is also important to point out that it is possible to raise children in the right way, and they go astray because of strong external forces. The question remains, can your child become a monster without you knowing it?

It is my opinion that there are signs, although subtle at times that clearly confirm that your children may be having a difficult time. Therefore, it is important for parents to work even harder to listen to their children and to pay attention to small and subtle signs that signal their children may be in trouble. Be willing to ask tough questions, and always seek help immediately.

Dear Dr. Levister: For 25-years I’ve had arthritis. I also tore the meniscus in my right knee. I’m in a lot of pain. Should I consider a knee replacement? F.S.

Dear F.S.: Thanks to better rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatments in the past 20-years, fewer middle-aged people need joint replacements today. In fact, a California study of people with RA—all in their 40s or 50s—found that knee replacements have dropped by 19% and hip replacements by 40% since the 1980s. (Rates in people over 60, however, have stayed the same or gone up.) Surgery is considered a last resort treatment option to relieve arthritis pain and restore function to the affected joint. More conservative treatment options are usually tried before surgery is recommended. Joint replacement surgery is recommended when pain is no longer well-

Joint Replacement – What You Need To Knowcontrolled and joint damage significantly affects quality of life. Joint replacement involves removing cartilage from both sides of a joint. The affected joint is resurfaced with a prosthesis (a new joint made of metal and plastic components). In other words, an orthopedic surgeon takes out the damaged joint and puts in a new, artificial one. You’ll need to take off from work. Healthy patients usually leave the hospital after 1 night. But it can still take 3 to 4 weeks before you’re mobile enough to drive or resume a desk job. Rehabilitation can last up to 3 months. Patients typically return to normal daily activities and function well. Patients who participated in sports before needing surgery likely can participate in low-impact sports following surgery. Physical therapy and a committed rehabilitation program are important to a successful outcome for surgery.

Changing ofRecall effort aims to piece together San Bernardino’s “broken” government by ousting city officials

T he City of San Bernardino has seen better days. Scott Beard can attest to a period in time more than 30 years ago when

San Bernardino wasn’t a city he felt ashamed of calling home. Now, however, the city’s political strife and bankruptcy filing in 2012 that garnered national attention has left residents and city employees in the crosshairs -- people like Beard. The culmination of San Bernardino’s institution issues has lead to a radical approach: a Recall. Today, Beard and the San Bernardino Residents for Responsible Government, a committee of residents and business owners, will stand in front of San Bernardino City Hall to introduce their recall petition, filed earlier this month with the Secretary of State. Among the officials who could be affected by the recall include Mayor Patrick Morris, City

Attorney James “Jim” Penman City Council members: Robert Jenkins, Chas A. Kelley, Virginia Marquez, Wendy McCammack, Fred Shorett, John Valdivia, and Rikke Van Johnson. The group will stand amid the landscape of a virtually-defunct downtown that once had the traffic, hustle and bustle of most downtown areas of comparable size. A moment in time when Beard was a proud resident. According to Beard, San Bernardino Residents for Responsible Government is a group of more than two dozen frustrated business owners and residents who disagree with the city’s governance and financial woes. Beard believes the city’s answer lies in establishing new leadership. “We have to take our city back,” said Beard “What has happened in the last 25 to 30 years has been really bad. ... The lack of oversight by our city officials.”

“If you are a resident, you would not be accepting of what has transpired, from my perspective. I am embarrassed many times over to say I am from San Bernardino. I’m tired of it. I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to see (a recall) take place,” he said. In a press release issued today by the San Bernardino Residents for Responsible Government, the committee announced they have submitted a Notice of Intent to Circulate a Recall Petition to the City Council, Mayor and City Attorney. The group cites a 14.5 percent unemployment rate, $45 Million budget shortfall, a 50 percent increase in homicides last year, and several additional factors. The press release also states that San Bernardino is “second only to Detroit as the poorest large city in the nation”.

theguards?Reputation to Repair The San Bernardino Residents for Responsible Government isn’t the only group city officials have to contend with over city governing practices and the economic hardships San Bernardino is trying to resolve. San Bernardino city officials have amassed many detractors, most recently the San Bernardino Police Officers Association, a Political Action Committee that sponsored a billboard at the intersection of Highland Avenue and E Street in San Bernardino, which went on display April 30. The billboard reads: “Congratulations! You’ve made San Bernardino the WORST run city in America!” on signage highly-visible above the rooftops of local businesses. Tobin Brinker, a former San Bernardino City Councilman expressed his dismay with political-

decision making within the city in an op-ed article that was published last month in the San Bernardino Sun Newspaper.

The Impact According to economist John Husing, filing of the recall may not carry an immediate impact on the city’s economic climate, but he believes it could be a step in the right direction. “The city is in such chaos right now. If it was going to be an impact it would be as the situtation unfolds if there is an election. Not just the filing (of the petition),” said Husing.

“San Bernardino has a governmental system that flat out doesn’t work. It’s set up for stalemate, “ he added. Husing compared San Bernardino’s financial downfall to Detroit’s declaring a state of financial emergency. While it is like Detroit, California has no legal mechanism such as Michigan where the Governor can declare a state of emergency and install a trustee to take over its decision making. “San Bernardino is not the hub, it is the blackhole of the Inland Empire. No light emerges.”

T he Latinos in Hollywood Organizing Committee, California State University, San Bernardino and Assembly member

Cheryl R. Brown are proud to present the exhibit Latinos In Hollywood.

Latinos in Hollywood is a lavish pictorial exhibit highlighting the history, achievements and participation of Latinos in the Hollywood film industry from its early beginnings to the present.

This history is dramatically illustrated through the progression of over 50 rare and many never seen still photographs, not only of the actors

and extras, but also the behind the scenes personnel such as producers, writers and

directors.

Alycia D. Enciso, chair and founder, started the collection 17-years ago

in Los Angeles when

Latinos in Hollywood Exhibit on Displayat CSU San Bernardino

asked to put a photo collection together by then-councilmember Rocky Delgado.

“The importance of the exhibit is that it highlights the contributions of Latino actors, directors, producers, extras, choreographers from the silent era to now. It’s a collection that’s very diverse like you have Rita Moreno with Morgan Freeman or Rita Hayworth with Fred Astaire. There’s another photo with Ramon Navarro and Greta Garbo so it’s a very diverse collection that highlights the role that Latinos have played in movies. The emphasis is to show that the Latino community has a lot of good actors, a lot of talent and a lot of creative people in the industry,” she explained.

“We will be paying tribute to Sal Castro,” she said. “He was instrumental in getting kids into Ivy League schools. He just passed away last week and they did a movie “Walkout” so we will be honoring him.”

K evin Krigger knew as far back as he could remember that the Sport of Kings was his destiny. At the age of 5, Kevin took a ride on a neighbor’s horse and

from that moment on the saddle became his home. At age 10 Kevin began riding competitively. This weekend 29-year-old Krigger is about to experience his lifelong dream of riding in the Kentucky Derby. Growing up in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Krigger quickly became one of the top young jockeys on the Caribbean racing circuit. Firmly seated at the pinnacle of success in his native Virgin Islands, Krigger still longed for the bigger prize. He wanted to race in the biggest event his sport had to offer. Krigger wanted to race in the Kentucky Derby but he knew it was an impossible goal to achieve while racing exclusively in his home country. Unlike most, Kevin would not be content as a big fish in a small pond, his dream was to swim in the largest ocean out there and nothing would deter him from that dream. So, in 2001, fueled by his aspirations eighteen-year-old Kevin Krigger packed up and headed to the states, taking the first rung on a tall ladder to his dream. Krigger landed in Ohio and raced there for several years. He then moved west and picked up at Golden Gate and Emerald Downs in Northern California. While in Ohio, Krigger met and became friends with fellow jockey Julio Felix who became a friend, mentor and confidant. After posting impressive winning percentages at both stops, Krigger decided to move to Southern California. Since arriving in the Southland, Kevin has become well known throughout the Southern California racing community. Krigger rode Goldencents to a win in Santa Anita Derby on April 6, a huge points win on their way to qualifying for the 139th running of the Derby and

making him the first jockey of African descent to win that race in its 76 year history. When Krigger and Goldencent exit the starting gate in Louisville on Saturday, Krigger will be the first ever jockey from the Virgin Islands to run in the Derby. If he wins, he will be the first jockey of African descent to win the Kentucky Derby in more than 111 years. The plight of the Black jockey has been well documented. Beginning with its first running in 1874, 15 of the first 28 races were won by Black jockeys. The most prolific of those pioneers was Isaac Burns Murphy. Murphy, who won the Derby three times

between 1884 and 1891 and, is still regarded today as one of the greatest jockeys of all time. After winning a matched race in 1890 against a White counterpart Murphy discussed his prize winnings with a reporter. The accepted belief is that Murphy’s interview disclosing the size of racing purses and his own personal earnings started an inevitable backlash against Negro jockeys. Shortly after Murphy’s interview the Jockey Club was created. Membership was a requirement for racing eligibility. Since Blacks were ineligible for membership consideration, the death blow had been struck. The Jockey Club, Post Civil attitudes and Jim Crow laws eventually led to the complete elimination of Negro Jockeys from the sport of horse racing. By 1921 there was not a single Negro Jockey in the sport. Krigger is astutely aware of the complicated history of horse racing and what his success could mean to the future of the sport. Jimmy Wakefield was the last African-American jockey to win the Derby in 1902. Wakefield won the 1901 and 1902 races and was forced into the fence in 1903 finishing third. In a little less than two minutes, Krigger could span the gap of 111 years and inspire a generation of younger folks that they can do it too. “I have always wanted to be a jockey and ride in the Kentucky Derby. Even at an early age my intentions were always to ride in the Derby someday.” Not burdened by the weight of the moment, Krigger draws his greatest confidence from the thousands of races under his belt. “I have rode against many of the hall of fame jockeys of my time,” states Krigger. He continues: “I rode against McCarron, Delahoussaye, and Pincay Jr. all of the great ones. That is a great source of pride for me to be able to say that I rode against and won against those guys and they respected me as a good rider and most of all were comfortable riding with me, knowing that I would not put them in a bad or dangerous position.”

Riverside

M embers of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter at UC Riverside Bourns College of Engineering had the experience

of a lifetime recently when they attended the society’s national convention in Indianapolis. The students earned honors and awards for service and outstanding leadership. The 39th Annual Convention is NSBE’s premiere event encompassing the organization’s best and brightest members showcasing NSBE culture, membership achievements, local and national talent, and Black entrepreneurship. At the conference, UC Riverside students were among the 9,000 NSBE members who attended a host of workshops, meetings and events, including those highlighting women in engineering, graduate school programs, opportunities for studying and working abroad, programs for veterans and recent medical findings for bioengineers. Roslyn Womble ‘13, president of the Bourns School of Engineering UCR chapter of NSBE, was named Region 6 Chapter President of the Year and Demetri Wilright ‘14 was elected NSBE Region 6 chair, a role he will assume May 1, 2013. Region 6 includes 13 western states and more than 100 university, college and community college chapters; alumni (professional) chapters; and junior (high school and pre-college program) chapters. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Womble. “The experiences and relationships that result from attending a national conference like this helps shape a student’s professional development and encourages academic competition. Here we get to compete against students from the best engineering programs in the world.” The students also had the opportunity to network with other NSBE members and professional mentors, as well as corporations from across the country that conducted interviews for open positions. More than 300 companies, such as Chevron, United Technologies and 3 M conducted interviews with promising students, and dozens of grad school programs were represented to give the college students opportunities to think about what comes

after graduation. The UCR chapter was also honored at the convention with the Retention Program Scholarship for the successful implementation of its program to ensure that African-American engineering students at BCOE persist to graduation. At the conference, BCOE Dean Reza Abbaschian participated in a dean’s round table discussion about retention of African-American students and hosted the student delegation for dinner. “I came away from the convention with renewed enthusiasm for our efforts to engage African-American students in STEM education, where they are seriously underrepresented,” said Dean Abbaschian. “It was very clear to me that our students have developed into exceptional leaders and role models for their peers and underclass students at the college. They have raised the bar for future students whom I am confident will maintain this high standard of achievement, leadership, and professionalism.” “Our goal at BCOE is to expose students to fast-changing national and global research environments. We aim to prepare American students to better understand the outside world and become globally competitive in their future careers,” Dean Abbaschian said. Attending the national conference is important and uplifting because students get exposed to professionals in their field, said mechanical engineering major Dante O’Hara.

Summer 2012 O’Hara joined a team of UCR students who traveled to China to conduct academic and cultural exchange activities at Tsinghua University in Beijing. O’Hara says UCR’s commitment to strengthening the pipeline of underrepresented students into science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) careers offers a viable solution to our nation’s growing global competitiveness problem in engineering and science fields. Dr. Ernest Levister, vice chair of the BCOE Council of Advisors and long-time advocate and supporter of STEM education for African-American students, said: “The need for organizations like NSBE is more important than ever. Education is the key to American competitiveness, and our nation is falling behind. Fewer young people are selecting STEM study paths despite the increase global demand for technological workers. To keep engineering and scientific jobs in the United States, and ensure America maintains its leadership, we need to inspire a new generation of Americans to pursue STEM careers. One way to do so is to spotlight black role models who are raising stars in these fields.” “UCR is committed to a climate of excellence, inclusion and diversity,” said Dean Abbaschian. “The development of engineering innovation for our global community requires the collaboration of exceptional individuals who have a variety of personal experiences, values and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance.”

As Co-Director of Retention Projects for the Office of Undergraduate Studies at California State University, San Bernardino, Qiana Wallace is in charge of developing retention projects to insure better retention rates for the university’s diverse population. She served as the winning advisor for The Opportunity of a Lifetime National Case Study Competition hosted by the Black Voice Foundation. As advisor she assisted the team of four students and two other advisors in developing research, conducting surveys and creating a strategy for employers to be able to reach out to diverse students.

Tell me something about CSUSB that most readers would not know?I actually learned from the students on our case study team that our campus when compared to all of the other twenty-two campuses in the CSU system, has the highest number of elected officials to come out of one educational institution. It brings us great pride to know that so many of our alumni are out there making a difference in our community. How did your career lead you to working in higher education?I actually started as a mentor for the Faculty Student Mentoring Program at San Diego State University when I was an undergraduate student. Then I worked part time for the Joint Educational Project (JEP) at the University of Southern California when I was in graduate school. I really enjoyed working closely with students and community leaders from local churches, schools, and community based organizations.

After I graduated, I worked mostly with non-profit organizations, and then became reconnected with higher education when I served as a field instructor to students who were enrolled in MSW programs at the University of Southern California, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Long Beach, and CSU San Bernardino.

I realized how much I enjoyed working with students and in higher education. When the opportunity to transition from macro social work practice in a

Qiana N. Wallace, Co-Director of Retention Projects, Office of Undergraduate Studies, CSUSB

more traditional setting to higher education became available, I seized the opportunity to utilize my social work skills to make an impact on the lives of our students and our local community. If you could add more education to your resume what would it be?I would definitely add a doctorate of philosophy in higher education. It would be my pleasure to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in higher education by engaging in scholarly research around the minority student college experience and ways that institutions, community leaders, and students can work collaboratively to improve the rate in which we excel academically and graduate from college. What has been your impact on college students in your career so far? I think you would really have to ask the students I have mentored or encouraged. I know that it has been a pleasure to work with the students at CSUSB on the Opportunity of A Lifetime case study competition. Being a part of the process that helped them to develop communication skills by working on an interdisciplinary team, utilize their critical thinking skills, and apply their classroom learning to a project that has “real world” applicability has been amazing for me and I hope it was beneficial for them too.

One student told me yesterday that he plans to include a whole chapter about me in his autobiography. I’m proud of the fact that our students envision the success that they will achieve in the future and it is an honor to be a part of their journey. What do you consider your greatest achievement to date?Becoming a mother is definitely my greatest achievement. My husband and I feel truly blessed to have such wonderful children who challenge us each day to be the best parents and people that we can be. It’s not always easy to balance my roles as wife, mother, and working woman, however, I make my family my priority, and everything else always manages to fall in line.
