It’s that time of yearagain! Christmas isnearly upon us and

the hectic countdownbegins until the BigDay!

But what a fantastic year it has beenweatherwise! We have enjoyed a wonderfulsunny Summer which extended into lateOctober and perhaps now the festive periodhas crept up behind us and given us all ashock!

As I always say at this time of year, try totake it as easy as you can in the build-up toChristmas and don’t let everythingoverwhelm you which is easy to do.

Just spend as much as you afford and ifcertain toys or gifts are too expensive, wellthere are thousands more available withinyour budget.

As I always say in the last Voice magazinebefore Christmas, please spare a thought forthose folk who cannot afford to enjoyChristmas in this time of deep austerity. Takea step back, and think about what you cando for others.

Perhaps nip round to the elderlyneighbours, especially the ones who live ontheir own, and take a bottle of whisky, a boxof biscuits, a box of chocolates or somethingnice. I guarantee the smiling faces of therecipients will make your Christmas!

And, of course, for many of us who havelost loved ones, Christmas will be a mostpoignant occasion – a time to reflect ourwarmest memories of those who have left us...

Christmas is such a special time of theyear and we all deserve to enjoy ourselvesafter the hard grind of stressful workthroughout the year, so let’s love thewonderful sights of children’s faces whenSanta Claus has hopefully visited and let’s allcelebrate together – it won’t be long beforewe are battling against the Arctic WinterWeather will it?

To everyone, everywhere, I wish you all AVery Merry Christmas and a Happy NewYear!

I’ll speak to you in the New Year and I dohope you have enjoyed reading The Voice in2014...

Uttoxeter Choral Society’s Concertat St. Mary’s Parish Church

There was a good attendance when Uttoxeter Choral Society held aconcert which honoured those who died in WW1.As special guests for the evening the Chairman of the local branch of the

Royal British Legion Mr Philip Hudson and his wife attended. The atmosphere of this special occasion was greatly enhanced by the

decoration of the church, with poppies, foliage and candles provided byladies of the choir. The programme of music for the evening was a fittingtribute to those who fought so bravely and died to protect our freedoms.. Itincluded music by Joseph Rheinberger, his Stabat Mater and two anthems.Joseph Rheinberger is a Victorian composer, famous for his organ music, healso wrote operas and choral music. As far as we are aware from our recordsthe Choral Society has never in its long history performed music by this

composer. The second half of the concert comprised a performance of the choral

suite from “The Armed Man” a mass for peace by Karl Jenkins. This hasproved to be a popular and relevant work at this time of remembrance, infact, Mr Hudson said in his speech at the end of the evening that it was oneof his favourite pieces of music. Poems and readings, chosen by the choir’sconductor Anthony Rose, interspersed the separate movements and thesewere read by members of the choir. The overall effect was very moving.

The Choral Society was conducted, as usual by their musical directorAnthony Rose, and the excellent organ accompaniment was providedthroughout by Darren Hogg. He also played two organ solos in the firsthalf of the concert..

Just theperfect day...

On March the 10th2012 Danny proposedto me at Chester Zoo

an unusual place for mostpeople but perfect for us as itwas where we first told eachother that we loved oneanother. I knew Danny wasplanning something as he wasquiet the whole drive thereand in a hurry to get to acertain spot before all thecrowds came past.

We knew we wanted tomarry at Keele Hall from theminute we stepped foot inthere, having a dad as awedding photographerdefinitely helped as it was thefirst place he suggested andthe only place we needed to see. Dannysuggested fairly early on that he liked the ideaof something different for the theme andsuggested Alice in Wonderland, I loved theidea so we got organising, which was an easytask as we’re both so organised. Fast forwardtwo years and as I started to get ready it allstarted to sink it that today was the day andI couldn’t stop smiling. The bridesmaidsarrived early and with some amazing hairand make-up being done by Claire fromJeremy Miles and Esther from Opulence theymade us feel a million dollars, then to top itoff I got to put on my beautiful phoenixwedding gown from Aisle of Brides whichmade me feel like a real princess, and thefinishing touch had to be my custom madeAlice in Wonderland themed shoes.

Just as I got finished weheard the beeps and toots ofthe Italian Job mini’s comingup the road and all theneighbours came out to see usand wave us off. The drive toKeele from Uttoxeter washilarious, they played somegreat music and because wewere early they filled sometime by going round severalroundabouts a few timeswhilst beeping the horns andwaving to everyone as wewent past.

I walked down the aisle toChasing Cars by Snow Patroland couldn’t stop smiling as Isaw Danny at the end of theaisle and seeing all our friends

and family standing there to share thehappiest day of our lives. After a short butlovely ceremony we were finally Mr and MrsAlkins and I don’t think our smiles couldstretch anymore as we walked back down theaisle together. At the end of the aisle we werewhisked away by Wayne - The StaffordshireToastmaster who helped us relax and enjoythe whole day. Before we headed out in to thebeautiful gardens of Keele Hall we had asneak pick at our amazing wedding cake, itwas stunning! Your wedding day is all about youand people who are special to you. That’s why my photography recordsall the emotion and fun of the day.I work quietly and professionallyfrom the bride getting ready up tothe f irst dance capturing theformal and informal momentsthat are important to you.

We then headed outside for ourphotos and Keele Hall has so manybeautiful areas to take photos fromwe were spoilt for choice. After thephotos it was time for our weddingbreakfast. Wayne got everyone in agreat mood and got them all cheeringfor our entrance. The food wasexceptional and was topped off bysome lovely speeches afterwards bymy dad, Dannny and the best manJon.

The rest of the afternoon as withthe whole day just seemed to fly by,we then mingled with all the guestsand it was great to see everyone. Asthe evening drew on we felt soblessed to have so many loved oneswith us and watching us as we didour first dance to Rebecca Ferguson’s“nothing’s real but love” and thenthere was a surprise dance with mydad to Heartlands “I loved her first”- it was the first time I’d cried all dayand as I looked up not only was Icrying but also my dad and everyone

else in the room. Then followed ourdisco that got everyone dancing forthe whole night. Before we knew itwas midnight and we decided to callit a night. We left as the party wasstill going on strong and we couldhear the sound of the evening guestssinging along which left us gigglingin our taxi back to the hotel room.

I have never smiled so much inmy life and I don’t think either of uscould have asked for a better day nora better person to share it with. Theperfect day was followed by a perfecthoneymoon. We then spent threeweeks travelling the south of Americavisiting: Las Vegas, Texas, NewOrleans, Washington DC and NewYork to name a few of the states wevisited.

The life of Mr and Mrs Alkinsreally was an adventure and nowback home the adventure is only juststarting as we are now happy toannounce that we are expecting ourfirst child in May.

Povey’s PeopleBy Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott

It was Perce Lockett who told me that OwdGrandad Piggott had been barred out ofTummy Dawkins’s pub. Whatever had

caused this must have been pretty serious asOwd Grandad Piggott was Tummy Dawkins’sbest customer.

Oh, it was serious owrate’, confirmed Perce.‘’Ey ‘it Owd Arthur Donkin’un knocked ‘iminter th’one armed bandit un Owd Arthurjowled ‘is yed on th’front on it an’ ay’s claimin’damages off Tummy Dawkins so TummyDawkins chucked Owd Piggott ite an’ barred‘im ite – fer life! Ah tell thee – it was serious.

‘Arm sick on it!’, fumed Owd GrandadPiggott. ‘It’s owleys mar fowt...Arthur Donkininner gooin’ towk ter may lark that!.... Arconner goo noweer ar conner withite gerrin’ introuble...What’s up with may??’

‘You’re dirty gutst!, I told him bluntly.‘Ar piggin’ anna!’, he shouted‘Listen at yer!.You want try usin’ a few

manners and be civil to people’ I told him.‘You’ve been barred from Longton Darby andJoan club, barred from Fenton British Legion, barred out of Hilda Aspinall’s shop for nickinga packet of firelighters, now you’re barred outof Tummy Dawkins’s....’

Most of the time, getting barred didn’toverly bother Owd Grandad Piggott. Hisexistence revolved around the bookies, visitingthe scrapyard with Club Paper Jack, getting apie at lunchtime and bolting it in St John’schurchyard, then going to sleep on a bench, butthe Tummy Dawkins situation was awatershed. His main watering hole had nowdispensed with him and a major void hadopened up before him.

‘Ar anna bothered!’, he said dismissively,‘Tummy Dawkins con stuff ‘is ale...thee’s plentymower pubs in Longton!’

It was then he learned about Dresden GoodCompanions.

It had been going for a few weeks, startedby a compassionate rector who for threemornings a week, had decided to donate hischurch to the furtherance of goodwill tomankind, mainly to lonely senior citizens. Inthe advertising of Dresden Good Companions, the kindly rector had added a strapline that saidon the poster ‘for gentlefolk’ People over sixtyfive could go there for tea and biscuits, have agame of bingo, then they would sing a hymn, have a few more cups of tea and pass the timeof day till about one oclock. That suited OwdGrandad Piggott absolutely fine.

He could sing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’with the best of them. He could go to DresdenGood Companions, get a couple or three pintsdown him in The Old Hut afterwards and stillget ‘on’ in the 2.30 at Doncaster. There was justone snag. Owd Grandad Piggott was notwelcome at Dresden Good Companions. Therewas no way that he fell into the category of‘gentlefolk’. Too many people knew him andknew of his reputation and one of the patronsof that establishment was Arthur Donkin so hestood no chance of being allowed in in his ownright. So he decided to go in disguise. Thisparticular day, this figure appeared at Dresden

Good Companions with a bandage around itshead with a hole cut in it and a single eyeglaring out, a cap stuck on the top of its headand wearing a filthy old mac. This one eyeglared out at the curate who looked rathertaken aback and asked ‘Are you alright sir’.

‘No!...Arm bad! Arm dead bad...Ar’vegorrer disease an’ ar’ve ony got thray monthster live....’

‘Oh....oh dear...you had better come in....’Owd Grandad Piggott needed no secondbidding and made himself at home, quicklyhelping himself to a cup of tea and attackingthe chocolate biscuits. He devoured half apacket, had three more cups of tea, won a twopound bag of sugar at bingo, then slunk offwhen it finished. He got round the corner, ripped his bandage off, then stumped off in thegeneral direction of The Old Hut.

Owd Grandad Piggott kept it going forthree weeks but by this time, questions werestarting to be asked as to his identity.

‘Arm sure ar know that bloke!’ mutteredone individual, ‘Ey reminds me o’ somebody...’By this time, Owd Grandad Piggott’s bandagewas getting a bit raggedy. It had got tea stainsall around it, the hole where his eye glared outof it was shredded and it was beginning tostink. It was Arthur Donkin who eventuallysussed it.

‘That’s Owd Piggott that is!’, he said withconviction. ‘A rate troublemaker if ever theewas one! Mark mar words..That’s OwdPiggott f’m Tummy Dawkins’s pub! Ar’llexpose ‘im next tarm ay comes in, they see if ardunner!’ Two days later, Arthur Donkin hadarrived early at Dresden Good Companionsand prepared a reception committee for thestranger with a bandage round his head andwhen the stranger arrived and took his usualplace where he could access the chocolatebiscuits, Arthur and a compatriot sidled behindhim and old Arthur lifted the bucket of waterthat he had placed ready while the compatriotgingerly lifted the cap on top of Owd GrandadPiggott’s head exposing the hole in the top ofthe bandage. He nodded to Arthur who liftedthe bucket and fired the contents into the hole.

The result was instantaneous. There was astifled ‘GLOOP’ and a great gout of watercharged out of the eyehole in the bandage andthe rest of it cascaded out of Owd GrandadPiggott’s neck. Owd Grandad emitted a roarlike a Galloway bull as he tore at the bandageand emitted a torrent of foam, froth and badlanguage. As the bandage was torn off, his hairstood out in wild spikes and he spluttered andcursed as he glared around for his assailant.Spotting Arthur Donkin, he made a wild grabfor him, missed and Arthur took off like agreyhound followed closely by Owd GrandadPiggott.

That was the end of Owd Grandad Piggottand Dresden Good Companions. TummyDawkins eventually relented and allowed OwdGrandad Piggott back in but Arthur Donkinhad to change his pub.

Each month Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott (Alan Povey) will write a unique insightinto our local life and its many characters.

His infectious, humorous slant on people provides a different and unusual mix whichhopefully will bring a warm smile to the faces of our readers.

Ahuge crowd poured into Uttoxeter Racecourse for theAnnual Beer Festival raceday with Uttoxeter bandRadio Mary providing superb entertainment after

racing!Uttoxeter Racecourse Executive Director David

MacDonald was over the moon at the success of the event:“This was the 5th running of The Marston’s Beer FestivalRaceday and our most successful to date with a crowd ofover 10,000 attending. This race meeting has grownsubstantially over the years and the relationship with localSponsor Marston’s has helped considerably. Over 2500 oftheir pub customers boosted the admissions. It was fittingthat on a day with a real Midlands feel to it we should booka local band to finish the day’s festivities and Radio Marywere happy to oblige.

“It was the perfect end to a thrilling day’s racing asthousands stayed behind to enjoy an hour set of RadioMary. I even heard that two customers from Liverpool hadtravelled down especially to see the band having first seenthem at Aintree. I was so pleased with their performancethat I have invited them back on Midlands National Day toplay in the John Smith’s Marquee,” added Mr Macdonald.

Radio Mary’s Lead Singer Kev Hand commented: “Wehad a great time playing at the Uttoxeter Racecourse beerfestival, the rain stayed away and the crowds flocked in bythe thousands! We’ve played a few racecourses now, including the Aintree Grand National and the CheltenhamGold Cup, so we were really chuffed when DavidMacDonald asked us to play in our home town.

“The Band was scheduled to go on stage at 4.15 afterthe last race, however as we are all well into the races, wedecided to arrive early to enjoy the day, I was the onlymember of the band not to have a winner, still I had a greattime, having a few bevvies and meeting a lot of people Ihadn’t seen for a while including Mr Nigel Titterton of TheVoice colour magazine, who has been a real mate to RadioMary over the years.

“By the time we took to the stage we were well up for it!I would like to thank everyone whostayed back to watch theband after the last race , weall enjoyed an amazingparty atmosphere it felt likeNew Year’s Eve.”

Kev added “Speaking ofNew Year’s Eve, we will bebringing in the New Year atBradley House Club inUttoxeter, so for anyoneinterested tickets are now onsale at the club.”

Is this your first baby?

Yes, Dexter is our 1st baby

What made you decide the time was right to have a baby?

As we got married in 2012 it was the right time for us and with work it just fell into place.

How was your pregnancy mum?

Not the best. I suffered with morning sickness from 6 weeks to 18 weeks. So with 12 weeksof morning sickness I use to dread going to bed knowing I would be ill in the morning. Peoplewould say morning sickness is a good sign, which made the mornings a little better. I tried allthe usual stuff like having ginger, but what worked for me was sea-band mama morningsickness wrist bands.

Did you find out the sex of the baby in advance?

No we didn’t. I wanted to find out but my husband wanted a surprise, which I’m glad we did.We still had people guessing the sex though which was interesting. Everyone was split 50/50.

If you didn’t, did you guess right?

Well, I thought a he would be a girl as girls run in my side of the family, but how wrong wasI? When you are younger you always have a preference of a boy or a girl but when you arepregnant all you wish for is a healthy baby.

Did you have a birthing plan, and were you able to stick to it?

I didn’t have a birthing plan, I just thought go with the flow as things can change so quickly, and if I was in really bad pain, have some help with pain relief.

What’s the craziest ‘old wives tale’ you’ve been told during your pregnancy?

I was told that if you use a strand of your hair and hang your wedding ring over your pregnantbelly - You are having a girl if the ring swings back and forth and it’s a boy if it swings in acircle. I did attempt this but Alan walked in saying its a load of rubbish and started laughingso I didn’t complete it.

Any weird cravings during the pregnancy?

I have heard about loads of weird cravings during pregnancy like eating coal or a sponge, butI didn’t have anything like that. I only had a sweet tooth, cake was my downfall.

For the dad: Tell us all about your experience as an expectant dad?

I was really excited but also wanted to be there for Amanda and to support her through labour.I was also really excited to meet our little bundle of joy and to also find out if we have a sonor daughter.

Tell us all about the last year with your baby.

Hard work! When he was born you are that tired with the lack of sleep, feeding and changingyour baby that even doing the dishes would be a bonus. But you look forward to eachmilestone like the 1st smile, 1st night sleeping through and him rolling over. Then before youknow it it’s your little ones 1st birthday. But I wouldn’t change the night feeds and nappychanges, especially when places don’t have changing facilities and you have to change them inthe strangest places. Having a baby brings out the big kid inside of you which is a great feelingespecial when he laughs with you, or at us.

How has having a baby changed your life?

Where do I start as the last year has gone so quickly. Things definitely change, you can’t justpop out to the shop as you now have to take your baby and changing bag, so a 5 minuteouting now takes 30 minutes. If you thought your life was busy before having a baby, you arewrong. Having a baby keeps you on your toes - No more lie ins at the weekend and your babycomes first. Having a baby has definitely changed our life - for the better!

Would you have another baby?

At the moment we are enjoying Dexter and having lovely family days out.

Any advice for expectant parents of couples planning a family? Everyone will give you advicebut just take everything with a pinch of salt. You are getting to know your baby and yourbaby is also getting to know you. You are new to this and there is no manual but you will soonknow what is best for your baby.

Finding out we were pregnant

I was a couple of days late with my period and my body is normally likeclockwork so I took a test at the start of January 2013, and there was the lineto say ‘pregnant’ eekk!! I showed Alan and we both smiled. We were both sohappy but was unsure when to tell family members. I was really nervous tellingmy mum and twin sister as they didn’t have a clue what big news we weregoing to announce, but they were so happy for us. Alan’s parents were alsoexcited as they kept dropping hints they would like to be grandparents. I toldmy best friend Hayley who was due 3 months before me and she has beengreat through my pregnancy. If I just had a little question she would give mean honest answer and listen to me.

His arrival

His due date had arrived 10th September and I had every one texting me ifthere was any twinges, but nothing. Days were passing and I didn’t venture farin case something happened. Soon Sunday 15th September I got bored andinvited my sister and her boyfriend round for Sunday dinner. We cooked anice lamb dinner and all ate around the table. As all the plates were cleared Istood up, then looked down as my waters had broke! As I went upstairs Irealized this was the last day it would be just me and Alan. I went backdownstairs and Alan said we cant go the hospital yet as the apple crumblewas in the oven and its going to be a long night so we better eat up. My sisterLisa and her boyfriend Shaun were really good as they did the last bits ofwashing up and tidy the house. So it was time to make our way to hospital -I wasn’t having any contractions so didn’t know what would happen next.

At the hospital they were unable to examine me as my waters had gone so Iwas sent home and told to come back the next day. As we live 20 minutesaway from North Staffs Hospital we got back home and BANG mycontractions started. I was home for 5 minutes before we left again to gohospital. As it was early hours of the morning there was no traffic on the roadand loads of parking spaces at the hospital. At this point gas and air was mybest friend. I then had the urge to push and thought oh, this is getting a bitpainful so asked for an epidural, at which point I was pushed into the lift togo up a floor. As soon as I lay on the bed they said there was no time for anepidural as our baby was ready to meet us. I thought, how on earth have Imanaged that on gas and air. After being in labour for 3hours 23min our sonentered the world. He came straight to me for cuddles and I was in shock howbig he was and that I had actually done it. I must say though that my midwifeDanielle was amazing. She was straight to the point and made me feel calmand comfortable at the most important time. You don’t really realize howmuch trust you put into one person you have only just met to ensure that yourlabour goes as smooth as possible. Then as my husband held our son I thoughtwow, we are now complete.

certainly NOT a choir, but give people who maynot have many chances to get out theopportunity to do so and have a sing-along. Allwe ask is that everyone who attends makes aminimum £1 donation to our charity. Have I got news for youby Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter

Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter LionsClub, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and asenior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism atStaffordshire University.

Happy Christmas – we must be Crackers

Cracker Night in Uttoxeter town centre –November 11th. It’s a Thursday. There you go.That’s the public service announcement over. Iknow you want to be there.I’ve said before that Cracker – an evening of

fairground rides, charity stalls, late night shoppingand street entertainment – marks the beginning ofChristmas for many of us in Uttoxeter.Never mind that the tinsel has been in the shops

since you came back from your summer holiday.Nor that the competing attractions of a computer-generated penguin and the shameless exploitationof the Christmas truce in the Great War have beenon our screens for weeks. Christmas only reallystarts with Cracker Night. Before that happens though, may I ask which

corporate retail giant brought a tear to your eye?Or were you immune to the charms of big budgetmanipulation of your spending power? The message from one of our leading

supermarkets is that if you buy a retro-styledchocolate bar you’ll be doing your bit for theBritish Legion. That apparently excuses the factthat the advert encourages your excessive andunnecessary consumption of groceries from asupermarket chain so cynical that it will exploit a

sanitised (and beautifully shot) version of thecarnage of war for a commercial.Happy Christmas, war isn’t over - as John

Lennon might, less hopefully but more truthfully, have written - it’s just being used to sell groceries. At least in Uttoxeter we don’t have a

Sainsbury’s, or a John Lewis for that matter. AndCracker is an opportunity to help local charities aswell as local retail businesses.

Santa Claus is coming to town

The Lions, who run Cracker with support fromthe town council, see it as an opportunity for a pre-festive family night out, with attractions fromSanta’s grotto for the little ones to thrill rides forteenagers and adventurous adults.Along the High Street, our stalls and those of

other charity and community groups raisethousands of pounds for good causes. But the purely commercial spin-off for shops,

pubs and cafes is important too. The morebusinesses that take advantage of the chance toappeal to the spending power of the thousands ofpeople thronging the streets the better, as far aswe’re concerned. The health of the local economy matters to all

of us. The High Street has more than its share ofempty shops, and arguably a disproportionatenumber of charity shops. But in that respect Uttoxeter is far from unique

among market towns. So I’d rather tell you aboutwhat’s on offer on Cracker Night than argue the

merits of rates-exempt second-hand shops, regardless of the worthy causes they support. We have jugglers, magicians, street theatre,

Punch and Judy, fire-eating, and musicians a-plenty. They include award-winning performersfrom hundreds of miles away and home-growntalent. There’ll be a disco with party games in theHigh Street and live bands – traditional andmodern – elsewhere. And of course, Santa in his grotto, in the Town

Hall.

Tis the season to be jolly

We can’t promise good weather, but we canpromise a good time for all ages. Cracker Night isthe cue to leave all the stress of organising a familyChristmas behind you for a few hours and soak upthe festive atmosphere.Jollity is not compulsory, but it’s a good idea if

you want to enter the spirit of the evening. It’s notall about commercialism and you can spend asmuch or as little as you like. I’ll be on one of the Lions’ stalls, I expect. If you

can recognise me from the dodgy photo at the topof this column, come and say hello. I may try totake your money off you (for the various charitiesof course), but I won’t do it with one eye on yourwallet and the other on the Cenotaph. And I promise not to have a penguin trailing

round with me.

Fashion Voiceby Angela Clinton of Uttoxeter

The new fashionable look is ‘anything goes’.There is no one defining look anymore,so itis all about how to define your own

individual fashion identity. Think about theimage, find your style, work with it, and you willfind it very rewarding. This new thought patterncan seem more difficult at first. When you feelconfident, relaxed and comfortable in what youhave put together, each choice will become easier.Fashion can be quite fickle sometimes, but it isabout self expression - and that applies to anyage. True style endures, and you don’t have tohave a vast wardrobe to achieve this. The likes of Audrey Hepburn’s regal style and

beauty are synonymous with 20th centuryglamour, andHubert deGivenchy designedthe actress’spersonal ensemble. She later said “Heis far more than acouturier, he is acreator ofpersonality.”

Helpful hints

The simplebasics are thefoundation of aversatile, stylish

wardrobe.Always make sure you

have the perfect white t-shirt or blouse and plainsweater. If you choose to wear

bold printed pants, balanceit with one of the above. When you wear a

slightly sheer blouse, makesure to top it with a blazer.Wear a camisole underneathto be extra safe. The safest hemline is to

the knee, although many ofthe femaletelevisionpresenters donot follow this rule.To achieve a polished look with

baggy boyfriend jeans, style themup with high heels or patentbrogues and a ruffled blouse. Lighter shades of denim draw

attention to the body parts theycover - While darker shades createa slimming effect. Dark denimjeans and a lighter denim top orjacket is the most flattering way togo.Do not wear a denim outfit

that’s all the same weight or wash.

Stay away fromcowboy boots, hats andwestern belts. It is notfashionable or acceptableto appear as though youhave just stepped out of aJohn Wayne movie. (Thatis, if you are old enoughto remember this veryfamous American actor.)Dress denim with

luxe-looking itemsincluding statement heels, bag, blazer, faux fur, lace, velvet etc.etc.I previously mentioned

to you about the Parkamaking a repeat

appearance on the high street. In Essentials wehave two styles - the quilted with a fabulous furlined hood, and a cotton fabric with a fur trim onthe hood. If there are any Mods out there youwill love the latter. For Christmas and the partyseason,we need to look through our wardrobesfor those gorgeous, glittery, ‘Glad Rags’ - readyfor party time.Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to

Cyclists have been in the news a lot lately, withcriticism being levelled at drivers of motorvehicles for not taking enough care.

Everywhere we go we see signs saying ‘Think Bike’yet cyclists these days seldom ‘Think Car!’ Theyoften hunt in packs with never a thought for otherroad users as they chat away - forcing motorists todrive at a snails pace behind them. Few of themthese days have decent lights on their cycles., apartfrom little flashing things that you can’t see untilyou are on top of them. Cycle paths continue to bea joke as cyclists would rather block the roads, boththese things I feel should be a fining offences, andprotective headgear should be obligatory. Come oncyclists take a bit of responsibility on yourselves andthe rest of us will have a lot more respect for you.I am right behind our Editor Nigel in his quest to

get the Mount Pleasant land opposite OldfieldsSports and Social Club in Uttoxeter, put to use foryoung people as extra land for sporting activities(see last issue). This has long been an objective fordifferent generations of sports people usingOldfields over the years, but as always the CountyCouncil will not bend, using all kinds of patheticarguments as to why they will not allow the landto be used. Although I am myself unable to be actively

involved at present, I have been proud to have beeninvolved with Oldfields since the Rugby Club

formed in 1982. We requested to obtain the land atthat time, but were told it was earmarked to be usedfor a hospital - 32 years later “Where is thehospital?” Meanwhile the land lies as fallowscrubland where occasionally cows graze. I am bothsorry and surprised that Phillip Atkins has notreplied to Nigels communication on the matter, butstick with it mate, if anyone can get them to budgeyou can!Uttoxeter Rugby Club who play on Oldfields are

going through a tough time at present, but we’vehad these seasons before with injuries not helpingthe cause. But these days work commitments onSaturdays more than ever before, prevent youngpeople from getting involved in Saturday sport, andsmall clubs like ours are bound to struggle with nostrength in depth. But I am sure things will improveas injured players get back to fitness. They are ayoung side with plenty of guts, but not enough guileyet.November was a busy month for the Churnet

Valley Male Voice Choir with three performancesduring Remembrance Week, at Lask Edge onRemembrance Sunday, Kidsgrove on the followingThursday, with the Caulden Lowe Pie and Peasupper on the Saturday then supporting RocestersChristmas Tree Sing Along on the 29th, when theChristmas Lights were switched on, which was goodfun.

One of our choirsters Mickey Walker was also amain organiser of the Wartime Sing Along at AltonChurch, where £200 was raised for the RoyalBritish Legion on a foul night in driving wind andrain. Despite this it was well supported by localresidents who joined in with a nice blend of songand poetry. The public were once again generous with their

donations to the Royal British Legion PoppyAppeal. I am sure you all saw the wonderful poppydisplay at the Tower of London, if not in actualityyou must have seen them on Television, they gaveus a poignant reminder of the occasion. The nightbefore the Services took place, the Uttoxeter branchonce again put on their excellent RemembranceConcert in St. Mary’s Church, where Standardswere dipped both at the beginning and end, withArmy Cadets setting up the Drumhead for thededication with poppies scattered from aboveduring the silence.Once again the Uttoxeter Town Brass Band gave

a rousing performance with a rather morerestrained poignant programme of music fromladies of the Heath Chorus who seem to grow innumbers every year. It seems that ladies choirs aregetting more popular, whilst male voice choirs arewaning. Before I start waffling again TTFN Les

Talking Pets by Shoshannah McCarthy BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS

Shosh qualified from the Royal VeterinaryCollege in London, and has been working as asmall animal vet at Blue House Veterinary Centrein Biddulph since 2009. She has a rescue catnamed Bagpuss.

Six festive delights to keep away fromyour pet this Christmas

1. Chocolate

At high doses, chocolate can be fatal to dogsand cats - especially dark chocolate with a highcocoa content. Cardiac arrhythmias and seizuresare common symptoms of toxicity, so speak toyour vet no matter how much chocolate your doghas consumed. The dose they have ingested can becalculated to see if it is likely to cause problems, and appropriate measures taken.Don’t leave chocolate gifts within reach while

they are awaiting wrapping, and don’t place themunder the tree until Christmas morning when youcan supervise your dog. Also take care withchocolate tree decorations.

2. Mince pies, Christmas cake and Christmaspudding

Dried fruits such as currants, raisins andsultanas are all toxic to dogs. Any quantity, however small, has the potential to cause fatalkidney failure, so make sure all such treats are keptwell out of reach. Also watch out for fruit and nutmixes and fruit scones. Always call your vet if youthink your dog has snaffled any of these.

3. Christmas dinner

Nobody wants their pet to feel left out whenthe family is tucking into Christmas dinner, butplease remember: large quantities of fatty food canlead to pancreatitis (painful and often seriousinflammation of the pancreas); stuffing can containonions, which are toxic to dogs and cats; cookedbones are not easy to digest and can become stuck, causing intestinal obstructions requiring emergencysurgery. If you wish to give your pet Christmas dinner,

stick to bone-free turkey meat with a fewvegetables such as carrots or peas – and go easy onthe gravy as this can be very fatty. Remember to take care with leftovers as well -

hungry pets can dismantle bin bags and jump ontoworktops!

4. Nuts

Who doesn’t love a bowl of nuts in front of aChristmas movie? If you’re a nut fan, keep yourdog in mind. Macadamias are tasty, but arepoisonous to dogs. Other nuts don’t tend to causeproblems, but shells can cause intestinal blockages- so keep them out of reach.

5. Lilies

Lilies are beautiful, but all parts of the plant –stem, flowers, pollen and leaves – are highly toxicto cats if consumed, causing severe kidney failure. Some cats tend to chew on plants, but even thosewho brush against the flowers by accident thengroom the pollen from their coat are at risk.If you have cats it is safest not to have lilies on

display in your house, just in case. Stick to cat-safe

flowers – roses, Gerbera, sunflowers and asters aresome non-toxic choices – and research your choicefirst if you are not sure. NB: Poinsiettas are mildly toxic to cats and

dogs – they can cause tummy upsets and drooling, but are not dangerous. Call your vet if you areworried.

6. Christmas decorations

Unfortunately, cats and dogs alike can enjoychewing on decorations. Tinsel is a big worry, as itcan end up getting stuck throughout the entiredigestive tract – very major surgery to remove andthe potential for a lot of damage! Always be awareof what decorations you have out and what yourpet is doing – never leave dogs and catsunsupervised around decorations if you know theyhave a tendency to chew.We also see cases of electrocution when dogs

and cats have been chewing on the cords forChristmas lights and illuminated decorations. Bevigilant and make sure you secure cords and wiresout of reach as far as possible.

This is an updated version of an articlepublished in the Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice lastChristmas. The holiday season can be fun for pets, but be mindful of their health and safety. Makesure you know what your vet’s Christmas openinghours are, and never be afraid to give them a call ifyou have any concerns - they will always have anemergency vet on duty.Happy holidays everyone!

Mistletoe and Shine

When about five years old, my Grandparentson my father’s side had sadly passed away.We were all invited to my other Grandma’s

for Christmas. This being the first time. She was theexact opposite of my other Grandma. A sort oflarger than life person, being a widow for a longtime, she seemed to make the best out of life. Herfarm was about 5 miles away by road, but taking ashortcut through the old hall gardens bought itdown to 2 miles, that on its own was to me a greatadventure. Ongoing up the driveway we came to theold entrance. This was a big heavy door in a storearchway, a bit like entering a castle. Luckily therewas a small door for us to get through. It was oneof them rare Christmas’s that had a skittering ofsnow. So the big frightening Rhododendrons andYew trees looked a lot better with a peppering ofsnow. On past the now creepy semi derelict Hall, hisSir- ship having built a new one near the Church, out of the creepy gardens, through a gateway, intoa deer park, not the same scale as Bagots Park, beinglittle more than a big field, perhaps 40 acres. But thedozen or so deer had been fed some hay because ofthe snow.

My old Pa said Santa’s fed his deer after a busynight. I must say they looked very nice in the snow.(But no sign of Santa) we then went down anotherdrive to the bottom lodge, through a little wickergate into Grandma’s farm yard. It was full of everyfoul imaginable, Guinea fowl, Hens, Bantams,Ducks and Geese; they were such a noisy lot. Theold gander and Turkey cock were throwing theirweight about as usual. I had never before seenMuscovie Ducks; they were very big and colourful.Father cleared a way through them, and so we madeit into the house. Inside the farmhouse, it was full ofall sorts of different people. Uncles, Aunts, Cousinsand it seemed anybody else that wanted to come. But the most dominant of all was Grandma. She

was completely in her element. We got there just in time for the Guisers

(mummurs) them being much earlier than in ourvillage, Grandmas Farm being much nearer toUttoxeter. I suppose they had enough drink beforethey left town and so they performed on their wayto the Blacksmiths Arms and hopefully making it tothe Red Cow at Willslock by night fall.

While we had been watching the Guisersperform, Grandma who had been head cook for the‘Sir-ship’ at the big hall and Aunt Lizzy had got thedinner out on to a big long table. At the head of itwas Uncle Jack, who had been trained as a butcher, but now ran the farm. It was always his job to carvethe meat, in this case a twenty plus pound Goose, allgolden and crisp. Before carving, he always made agreat display of sharpening his carving knife. Thesteel going that fast that you had a job to see hishands moving (magic to me). Us children sat at asmaller table, but our plates were over full, as wereour tummies! And then of course came theChristmas Pud, with the lovely Rum sauce.

Neighbouring children seemed to use Grandmasas a second home. After dinner a few turned up,amongst them a trio of girls, one was blonde namedMandy, she was nice but a bit bossy, the smallestwas Marina, happy and always smiling, but themiddle one, Katie had lovely dark hair and eyes, abit like a young version of Nigella Lawson, Oh My!

Whilst the adults stayed in the living room, possibly having a drink or two, all us kids went intothe long Parlour to have a game or two.

It was here that I first discovered mistletoe, thelovely Katie giving me a kiss under it. I rememberblushing a bright red, especially with my eldercousins laughing at me.

After a lovely afternoon it was time for tea. What a tea indeed, jelly’s made in the fanciest ofmoulds, and cakes of every discription. Grandmacertainly knew how to cook.

Pa had gone back to do the milking, leaving us

to enjoy ourselves. The grownups moved into theparlour, what an assortment. There was LameTommy who had lost his leg in the First World War.He had decorated his wooden leg with tinsel. PoorUncle Richard who had been gassed in the same warand was incoherent and unable to walk properly, itwas a bit frightening to watch him, poor chap. AuntLizzy was from Stoke until she had married UncleJack, and her brother was over who they called‘Stokie Joe’. Aunt Lizzy could play the organ; thiswas one you pumped up with your feet. LameTommy played the squeeze box and Stokie Joe themandolin. They all seemed in a jolly good mood, perhaps the odd drink or two helped. So the bandstruck up, and a wonderful evening of songs began. All the old favourites, Little Brown Jug, WidecomeFair, and my favourite Old Mc Donald, because Icould join in with the animal noises. They all playedwithout any sheet music, playing by ear. I supposethis would go on late into the night finishing with amassive supper, but pa had come to collect us byhorse and trap to save us walking back through thespooky Old Hall Gardens. He was in his best trap, all gleaming with varnish. It had a carriage lamp toeach side. The horse soon covered the five miles andwe were back home. We had many lovely memoriesof a lovely Christmas and my First Kiss!

So just put yor fate up, and have a rayt good un.Merry ChristmasOwd ErnThe footnote is very sad as this was to be

Grandmas last Christmas, dying of cancer thefollowing year. The gassed uncle stumbled and fell into a pool and drowned, unable to lift himself out.The war Pension Office deemed he was ineligiblefor a disability pension, because he had no physicalinjuries.

“Up horn, down corn, down horn, up corn” orso the saying goes, in farming, referring to the factthat, usually, one sector of agriculture might bedoing poorly, but another may be doing very nicely

as far as prices go.At the moment, all sectors are paying poor

returns to the farmer, after a pretty good summer. This is unfortunate, as all the inputs (ie. feed, fueletc) keep rising.

Now December is upon us, we are thinkingahead to next years lambing time and will bestarting to feed corn to our early lambing ewes, thismonth.

Not too much to start with, as you tend to getsome that will eat as much of everything you putbefore them, some that only eat the bits they like thelook of and some that wont touch it with a bargepole(if they knew what one of those was!).

We don’t want it wasted, as it has cost us toproduce it, but the Pheasants and crows pick overthe leavings and, as we feed directly onto theground, we can prevent one area getting trodden up.

It can get a little hectic when the ewes see youcome with the bag of corn and are soon milling

round your legs, as they try to get the first mouthfulthat is poured, following you as you try to walk ina straight line, barging and shoving !

At least a line of static bottoms makes for easycounting when the bag is emptied!

We are beginning to market our bullocks whichare now about 18 months old.

These were brought inside during October andhave been fed more corn to ‘finish’ them- this iswhen they are in optimum condition for sale. Theywill be sold two by two, locally.

If any of our animals are treated with medicinesor wormers for illness or parasites such as liverfluke, there is what is called a ‘withdrawal’ period. This means a specified (depending on the drug used)time when that animal cannot be sold to go into thefood chain.

There have been cases of the theft of animals, probably for their meat, but who knows if thoseanimals have been treated with something thatcould cause concern in humans?

No one thinks twice if they see a lorry loadinganimals in an isolated area, but it may not be all itseems.

Farmers have to record usage and dates for ourinspections and have medicine records for all ouranimals and their treatments, along with recordscovering every aspect of farming, from how muchmanure is put on the fields(and which ones) to whatwe would do in the event of a chemical spillage.

Like with any business, red tape threatens totake over and some times we spend more time fillingin paperwork than carrying out what we arereporting!

Have seen a Little Owl flitting along our drive atdusk, recently. Its wings a blur as it flies into the Ashtrees, in which it probably lives. It is about the samesize as a Starling and can be seen in daytime, sittingon fence posts.

And I don’t know what’s happened just lately, but our old collie, Ben, seems to be reverting back topuppyhood in the daft way he behaves on occasion.Or he has suddenly become very, very happy!

The community of Tean once again cametogether to honour an inspirational manwhose tragic death over

5 years ago left a huge voidin the lives of many.

Darren ‘Daz’ Turner wasborn on May 27th 1971 andhe lived in Tean throughouthis life. He was always apopular member of thecommunity and a friendlyface around the village.

He married Amanda in1999 and the happy couplecreating a loving familybefore Daz was diagnosedwith non-HodgkinsLymphona and after such abrave battle against the disease he lost his life in2009.

With years which have passed, Daz’s familyand friends have organized a memorial event in

his name, held at the very popular Teanhostelry The Cross Keys.

This year’s event was Halloweenthemed and already over £300 has beenraised which will go to the TeanVeterans run by Carl Gilbert and TimAlcock. A new strip or jackets with DazTurner on the front of the tops could bein the pipeline.

Jayne Molloy and Steve Beaumonthave been involved in the memorialnights - Jayne says that its a humblingthought that so many want toremember Daz at these events.Thoughts are already in the pipeline asto what we intend to do for next years

night. Jayne said: ‘Amanda has done such abrilliant job in raising their children up through

such an emotional and difficult time as losingyour husband and father to your children, Iadmire Amanda - it can’t have been easy.

‘But its great that through all the sadness wecan now hold these memorial nights andremember with laughter what Daz was like andsome of the numerous silly things he did.Laughter and stories were heard throughout theHalloween night. The music was from Daz’sfavourite era the 80’s, with Steve Beaumontmaking sure the set list was the best of the 80’sscene, especially the ever popular Depeche Mode, concluded Jayne.

Daz Turner was an inspiration not only for thelocal community as he battled his illness withsuch bravery but also for his Tean Albion FCcolleagues and most importantly his wife andchildren.

Lank’s LoreBy Steve ‘Lank’ LavinGolden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters

Well Christmas willsoon be upon usonce again and

Uttoxeter again is gettingready to offer it’s residentsand visitors alike aprogramme of activities tocelebrate this festive occasion.

The town centre will soonbe displaying it’s annualChristmas Lights whichcertainly brighten up the areaand attract many visitorsfrom out of town thanks toUttoxeter Town Council andLenny Woodwards skilledband of electricians who areresponsible every year forwiring up and erecting thisfabulous display.

Although some of the pastold Christmas traditions haveunfortunately died out (seepictures) they have beenreplaced with an abundanceof others.

These will be startingshortly when the town hosts aVictorian Evening organised by Uttoxeter Knights,a local charity group, which consists of variousstalls offering local produce, shopkeepers (many ofthem dressed in Victorian attire) remain open untillate so that you can start your Christmas shoppingand coupled with a variety of festive fun, food andentertainment for all the family promises again tobe an evening not to be missed.

Shortly afterwards the annual ‘ChristmasCracker Night’ organised by the Uttoxeter LionsCharity Group will take place which, as in otherpast years will prove once again that Christmas iscoming with it’s array of street vendors, performers, stalls and children’s fairground rideswhich should really get you into the Christmasspirit of things.

One of the things I look forward to seeing atthis time of year is the relatively new concept ofviewing the various private residences throughoutthe town whose occupiers have adorned theirproperties with an array of Christmas decorations

for not only the benefit ofyoung and old alike but also forthe good of local charities. TheJohnson Road area ofUttoxeter’s residents display iscertainly one not to be missed. If you are new to the area, avisitor, or you have not seenthem before, make an effortbecause I will guarantee to youthey are a sight to beholdwhether or not you likeCrimble Decos or not you havegot to admire the originationand hard work that has goneinto these to brighten up thisarea during this festive season.

An annual ritual that youdoesn’t happen nowadaysowing to the re-organisation ofthe local police station toBurton-on-Trent, is to hear thedulcet tones of some of thelocals who had overindulged inthe Christmas spirit so to speakand had been locked up for thenight in the local nick to sober

up, singing carols at the top of their voices much tothe disapproval of the local constabulary who were

trying to keep order to noavail!

Let us not also forget atthis time of year the localchurches in the area whichput on some splendid seasonalservices which really portraywhat Christmas is actually allabout.

May I wish all the readersof my column and all thepeople who have assisted mein supplying photographsboth for my column and theGood Old Days page a veryhappy Christmas and aprosperous New Year. I hopeto be offering my servicesagain next year and againthank you all for yoursupport.

One of the traditions in Uttoxeter that has notdied out is the meeting of the Meynell Hunt inUttoxeter Market Place on Boxing day. Aspectacle that attracts a huge attendance and iswell worth attending. A section of their membersare pictured here in 1969.

Alan’s Football Autobiography by Alan Beaman, a local sporting legend

In my 21 years at Rocester I had a fabulous timemaking many friends in Amateur andProfessional football, also many friends in the

media.John Rudge, the Port Vale manager, was very

helpful and would always return calls and chatabout how Rocester were doing - we got on reallywell straight away.

I remember when we won the league, leaguecup and Staffs Vase, I asked if a player would cometo our presentation at the Uttoxeter Racecourse.John did better than that, he did the presentationhimself and from then on Alison and myselfbecame friends with John and his wife Del.

John also lent me the Irish winger McCinstryon loan and I started to look out for players in thenon-league.We played in Birmingham Senior Cupin those days and drew Moor Green where IanTaylor was playing so I went down to watch thembefore our game and Ian was going from box tobox causing havoc.

The Vale were on the case now and John askedmy opinion on his performance, well the night ofthe game I went through my views on MoorGreen’s Team with Ian being the main threat to usbut on the night he was sub and came on at halftime.

We kept him quiet and Nigel Mottram scoredtwice in a 3-2 win for us, Motty had a great gameand stood out as the best player on the park, thingswent quiet on Ian until Notts County were sniffingaround him and Rudgie decided to take the gamble- the rest is history and he became a superb playerat the Vale and Aston Villa.

Then we had the ultimate draw possibleBirminghan City at St Andrews with Terry Cooper, the Ex England left back their manager. This was tobecome my greatest disappointment in football, now we had a top team at Rocester then and gaveBirmingham one hell of a game. We were drawing2-2 with a few minutes to go and pressing for thewinner we won a corner but lost possession andwere caught on the counter attack and they scoredthe most gutting feeling possible.

After the game Terry Cooper was superbcongratulating us on our performance but it wasno consolation for me as I knew we had blown ourchance to beat a Pro Tea. Terry Cooper alsowanted to take a look at Mark Sale who we hadsigned from under the feet of Burton and Stafford

Rangers so Mark went into training for two weeksalong with Nigel Mottram who again had a greatgame against Birmingham.

The outcome was Birmingham bought Markfor £10,000 and Rocester also made another£2500 when Mark was sold on Mark ended uphaving a good career in the game. Motty wasunlucky not to get a contract with many clubsinterested in him, he was one of the best players Iever signed at Rocester - great feet and a naturalgoal scorer with a superb attitude. Another playerto make Rocester money was Tony Hemmings aleft winger who just turned up at Rocester fortraining after leaving Burton Albion! After the firstsession we could see his potential, lots of pace, verystrong, a quality player. Tony was a great lad andwe soon had him focused on working hard as ateam player but also expressing his own ability, hewas soon scoring and making goals and the scoutswere down watching him.

I could see he had the chance to become a pro,so I started to call some contacts, Port Vale andTranmere had him for training and games, but hisbreakthrough came when we drew NorthwichVictoria in Staffs Cup. We drew at home but lostaway against a strong conference team, againshowing what a strong team we had players likeMick Collins, Kev Barry, Barry Alcock and manymore would perform consistantly in theNonleague. Tony played well in both games andNorthwich offered us £5000 - we eventually got£8000 and another sell on clause made us anotherfew grand. Tony signed for Wycombe when MartinO’Neil took a chance on him, again Tony had agreat career. I went to watch him many times, ofall the trophies we won nothing gave me moresatisfaction than getting those lads in Pro football. Now this was a lot of money for Rocester and Iwill tell you of my agreement with the club overthe new ground and the reason they sacked mewhen I was in Portugal in my next article.

Now going back to old days in Tean, mygrandad was the secretary of the Billiard andSnooker Hall at Hall Yard. I can remember goingthere with him, I was never allowed on the snookertable but they had a magnetic football game whichI loved playing on.

Some tough characters about then but myGrandad kept them in order - respect was shown inthose days. Growing up in a small Village was

great, a pecking order existed and if you steppedabove your station lads a bit older would let youknow and put you down a peg, it was simple buteffective, our village bobby was Mr Brooks and ifyou got into trouble he would let your dad knowin the pub and then you were in for it.

I once remember being in this situation and mydad stopped me going to Stoke on the Saturday Iwas gutted but he didn’t back down and I learnedthe hard way to behave. Old fashioned respect anddiscipline sadly missing today. Teachers and policeand even parents struggle because we are to softon proper discipline which never hurt anyone, thecourts are restricted what they can do so nobodycomes down on the bad guys. Showing respect isvital for youngsters especially towards the elderly- lots do but some believe they can get away withbreaking the law.

I was brought up at Vicarage Crescent andGarden Village and we had lovely times going upthe woods for the day with bow and arrows andSheath knives pretending we were hunting, makingbases to hide in, your parents didn’t worry aboutyou, that was the normal thing to do - we had acarefree upbringing nothing like todays.

A big occasion in Tean was when The Wakesarrived and we would rush home from school andspend as much time as possible at The Wakesalthough we hadn’t got much money we loved theatmosphere.

Mark Hughes is still doing a good job at Stoke, the possession of the ball has been a lot betterrecently, gaining some good results for the club.Rooney gaining his 100th cap is some achievementI have always been a big fan of Rooney and hisrecent form looks like he may be moving into agood run of form I thought he was superb againstScotland, still our best player by a mile. I liked theway England were moving the ball about, a lot ofone touch showing a renewed confidence we allhope will blossom in the near future.

My family has been knocked sideways by ourSon in law Richard Sampson having a very seriousmotor cycle crash in Spain. Rich is now back in inthe UK recovering from his life threatening injuriesat Oswestry. Can I on behalf of all our familythank everyone around the area who have beenmarvelous in their support towards us, we are sograteful for all the help people are giving, what agreat place we live in.

Sport is in my blood...by Jeff Wood of Cheadle, dedicated to local sport for a lifetime...

On my shopping excursions in the area it’samazing how many former footballers Ibump into. Here are a few of them with

many more to follow in later articles.I was in a shop the other day and in walked

George Byatt and Steve Cross. George I playedagainst many times – a prolific goalscorer withseveral clubs. Steve I played with when he was ayoungster an I was in the veteran stage. Ioccasionally played alongside Steve as a centreback and he made it easy for me as he was reallytalented in that position.

Many will remember Nanny Millward.Perhaps not the most artistic player with the ball athis feet but he was brilliant at man-marking. TellNanny to mark the opposition’s most dangerousplayer and he would stick to his task to the letter. In fact he’d never let his man get more than a yardaway from him for the whole 90 minutes.Possession of the ball didn’t matter to Nanny, hejust stopped his opponent playing.

A minute or so after seeing Nanny, I saw DennisBentley. To play with Dennis in goal behind usgave a feeling of reassurance that the oppositionwere not going to score.

I dropped on Steve Bailey recently. I playedwith Steve and he could make things happenwhenever he had the ball. Steve and myself havesomething in common in that we were both bornin the same house at Kingsley, a few years apart ofcourse.

I see Bob Bassett in Cheadle now and again. Wwere at school at the same time and Bob went onthe be a regular goalscorer with Boltons. I used tohave to try to stop him – not terribly effectively Imust admit !

I’ve come across Bill Spooner a few times. Iplayed with Bill for many years and, as I’veintimated previously in this column, he was themost consistent player I ever had the privilege ofplaying with – he never had a bad game. A superguy and a master tactician.

I saw a couple of old players not shopping, butat Leek Town a week or so ago in the persons ofTony Brooks and Cliff Randle. Tony was agoalscorer of the highest order and Cliff was anoutstanding midfield player who you just couldn’tget the ball off once he had it in his possession.

Paul Harrison is coach at Churnet Valley FCwhere my lads play. I played against Paul when he

was a young teenager and I was almost at the endof my career. He may himself now be in theveteran stage but, having seen him taking trainingand were it not for his dodgy knee, he could still doa good job in goal. He’s now content to pass on hisgreat experience to the younger players along withmanager John Allen.

I watched Rocester recently and, reverting backto cricket, I was pleased to renew acquaintancewith Graham Forrester. I recall batting whenGraham was captaining the opposition. I wasnever a prolific scorer but I did have one favouriteshot – the leg glance. I thought it odd that Icouldn’t get any runs at all because of the twobackward short legs Graham had positioned. Iwas prompted to ask what are they doing there ?Graham retorted that he knew how I got my runs.It hadn’t taken him long to work it out and cut offmy scoring almost completely.

Anyone who has played sport will always havesomeone to talk to about old times. I’ve mentionedbut a few here but there are many more for me tomention in future articles. The only possiblydisturbing factor is the everyone I’ve mentioned isyounger than myself !

Bake’s Memoirsby Neil Baker, Crewe Alexandra FC Assistant Manager and local sporting legend

Well what a couple of months we have hadin the sporting world since we lastpublished. The controversy over whether

Ched Evans should be allowed back into football. The Chairman of Wigan, Dave Whelan appointingMalky Mackay as his new manager. Roy Keane,Fergie and Kevin Pietersen all were bringing outtheir latest books and Wayne Rooney getting his100th cap for England.

Plenty to have a go there with then but before Ihave my say on the above topics I will begin withmatters a lot closer to home with the demise andfolding of Cheadle Utd FC.

I found it hard to comprehend when I heard thenews that the club could no longer fulfil theirfixtures due to a lack of commitment from presentplayers and were to resign from the league. A clubthat had been at the forefront of Sunday footballfor the last forty years, competing in the Leek andDistrict league before moving onto the Potteriesand district league, also participating and winningI might add, the Midlands Sunday Cup.

Cheadle Utd were one of the best and mostrespected clubs in Staffordshire, I haven’t got thespace or time to reel off the honours won by theclub over the last four decades but they arenumerous. Some of the best players in the arearepresented the club over this period, again toomany to mention but players I have documentedin my column many times. Not only a successfulclub on the pitch but always run well by a loyaland dedicated committee that was founded byDave Wilson and family and supported by the lateJohns, Titterton and Plant, Les Whieldon , TedMoult and others. My old mate Malc Coates wasthe manager when I joined in the mid-seventies, Iwas invited to his 70th birthday a few weeks agodown at the cricket club and it was just like a re-

union at Utd. It was great to be in his companyagain, a man who has really enjoyed life to the fulland I’ve been fortunate enough to share some goodtimes with him, mainly when we were together atthe club. Gilbert Mould was there, now Gilbertwas the` daddy ‘at the club at that time and nobodyargued with that and what respect he commanded.Former players, Satch and Ivan Plant were alsopresent and it was nice to catch up with themagain. They told me that Brother Tony had notbeen well, so get well soon Tony. Keith Parker,Jimmy Cartlidge, Les, Dave Plant all players whohad played at the club were present with MickyBeardmore, Hodge and Shino who had sat on thecommittee at various times. My old mate GrynGringley, sorry Glyn Brindley was another who Ihadn’t seen for a while. I must tell you this story,Beacon had put a side in the Tean cricket clubknock out and we won the competition. I’m prettysure the game was played on a Thursday eveningand off we went to the Highwayman to celebrate. We came out late, well-oiled and had parked thevan round the back of the club (don’t ask mewhose it was or who was driving!). Next to the vanstood some full barrels of lager, we decided toborrow one and find it a good owner. The last timeit was seen was up at a house in HammersleyHayes. Now I’ve kept a pub and it’s not easy toopen a barrel of ale without the right equipmentbut Glyn found a solution, a good hammer andchisel came to the rescue and he was able to reapthe rewards!

So it’s R.I.P Cheadle Utd, or is it? A little birdthat night told me that plans might just be underway to bring the club back to life. Let’s hope so.

Congratulations to Wayne Rooney on winninghis 100th England cap against Slovenia. What anachievement and he`s also closing in on Bobby

Charlton in becoming our record goal scorer forthe national team. He provokes argumentsbetween football supporters all over the countryon how good he is, but you cannot knock what he’sdone for club and country. Criticised for hisperformances in the big competitions whichdetermines, for me anyway, that he will not bedeemed world class, he has been named captain ofboth club and country and both would be poorerfor his absence now.

Probably the debate that has divided footballfans and plenty that aren’t, is whether Ched Evansshould be allowed to continue in his professionafter serving his prison sentence. My thoughts onthis are that he was found guilty of an offence andwas punished with a custodial sentence that he hasnow served. His problem now is that he’s appealedthe sentence and not seen fit at this moment in timeto offer an apology to the person the offence wascommitted against. Whatever we think of him forthis, surely he warrants a return into society andto follow the path that he took prior to his crime?I’m not for one second condoning what happenedbut not many of us can say we haven’t done thingsin our lives that we have regretted and we have hadanother chance. Another problem he has is that heis trying to pursue a career in a high profile sport,if he had been involved in a lower profile careerwould there have been as much opposition to himreturning, I don’t think so.

Well that’s it for now, the festive period isalmost upon us again. Although it’s a busy timewhen you’re involved in football it’s also a specialtime. I would like to wish all my friends andreaders a very merry Xmas and a happy new year.

All the best.Bake.

All-time local soccerHall of Fame TeamBy Roy ‘Razzer’ Astbury

Each month Uttoxeter’s best known character Roy ‘Razzer’Astbury will compile his very own ‘All-Time Local Football Team’which in his opinion is the very best of players past andpresent.

‘Razzer’ will create a team in each issue of The Uttoxeter &Cheadle Voice which he believes incorporates all theingredients of a football outfit which could be unbeatable!

He will be delving into his thoughts to remember all theterrific players in years gone by whilst selecting those who areexceptional in our present day.

It should be a fantastic talking point in our community andno doubt you all will have your views on ‘Razzer’s Hall of Fameteam.

If you have your own Hall of Fame team then get involvedand just give Nigel a call at The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice on01538 751629, 0776 784 6937 to tell him or send your teamto: The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, 3 Spode Close, Cheadle,Staffordshire, ST10 1DT or [email protected]

ADAM HILTONUttoxeter Town

Strong brave keeper who never lets his sidedown.

CLIFF COPESTAKERocester FC

Play anywhere in theteam, but great in

defence.

ROSS BOULDUttoxeter Town

Ross will make an excellentfootballer, terrific talent.

ANDREWBROOKES

Uttoxeter YoungFarmers

Always involved in thegame, strongdefender.

DAVE WILSONCheadle United

What a fantastic clubman, one of the finest

secretaries of his era andan excellent full back.

JOEL DYCHEUttoxeter Town

One of Uttoxeter’s finestyoung players, Joel willcontinue to improve andcould be one of the best

players around.

BRIAN LAWTONCheadle United

A Terrier type midfielderwith a touch of class,

always liked to have a popat goal.

DANNY BOOTUttoxeter Town

Great team player whoalways gives 100%

LUKE LEWISUttoxeter Town

Great skills and a sharpplayer. Looks to be onefor the future at The

Town.

OLLIE RITCHIEUttoxeter Town

Great prospect who gets intogreat scoring positions. Reads

the game very well.

STEVE BRADBURYCheadle United

Fantastic centre forward who ledthe line like a lion! Great

goalscorer.

Razzer’s Hall of Fame December Team

Goalkeeper

Barry Alcock

Always felt safe when Barry

was the last line of defence.

Commanding and a good

organizer of those in front of

him.

Fullbacks

Kevin Rogers and Allan Hannah

Kevin could contain and jockey

a winger from as close a

distance as I have ever seen.

Allan was a lightning quick

defender and pure class when

he had the ball.

Centre Backs

Neil Baker and Peter “Curly”

Johnson

I could put Bake in any position,

including goal, and he would

perform. Curly was an old

fashioned centre half who an

attacker tried to get past at his

peril.

Midfield

Billy Spooner, Ian Mellor and

Peter Booth

Bill Spooner was consistently

the best player I ever played

with. In over 300 games

together, I never saw him have

a bad one. Up with every attack

and back with every defence.

Ian Mellor, like Bake, could play

anywhere. Tactically aware, he

would be the holding midfield

man. A really great lad, very

sadly no longer with us.

“Beacon” would be on the left

side. Very hard to dispossess

once he had the ball and also a

great tactician.

Up front

Dave Matthews, Ivor Abberley

and Steve Brewster.

You expected “Stan” to create

an opening every time he had

the ball. Abbo had the quickest

burst of speed over ten yards

that I’ve come across locally. I

much preferred to play with

him rather than against him,

having to try to mark him. Also

knew where the goal was.

Steve was an extraordinarily

powerful and fast winger who

packed a terrific shot.

I deliberately haven’t named

any subs because, as this is a

paper exercise, I can just as

easily pick another eleven of

similar strength in a future

edition and I wouldn’t wish to

offend anyone who isn’t named

here.

We have inserted one football club each player has performed for. Obviously, many have played for several clubs in their careers.

I have chosen a team of eleven players with aCheadle connection who I have had the pleasureof playing with or against at some time duringmy own era. Having said that, I notice that allof them are quite a bit younger than myself !This isn’t a great surprise as I did play for 25years and my memory fails when I try to thinkof eleven older than myself, especially as someof them would be in their nineties by now.

In common with the fashion of my era, I havealso chosen a 4-3-3 formation, which isn’t mypreferred system by any means but it would suitthis team.

On the OcheBy Dave Jones of UttoxeterLife President of the Uttoxeter and District Darts League.

On Friday November 7th The UttoxeterMixed Summer Darts League’s Finals andPresentations Night was held and there was

a very good turn out indeed. The evening started with the mixed doubles finals

with the very talented Maggie Ball and MickyRatcliffe winning one of the two cups up for grabs.

Then it was Margaret Ashmore and Mick Fowellwinning the other doubles with my brother-in-lawMick finishing on the Bull. He was always good atthat – the bull – not the finishing!

Then it was onto the singles finals with TracyBailey winning the ladies trophy and Anthony Wallwinning the mens.

Next came the presentation of the trophies and itnow gives me a chance to tell you about an old team-mate and good friend, a lovely man, Mr JohnMcGurr. John was not only gifted with his arrows

on the oche but also with 4 inch nails! A specialplayer indeed.

When he was a young man growing up backhome in Ireland, he would practice his aim bythrowing at a knot in a piece of wood till he put alldarts or nails in the said target!!

I don’t know if he did know that some peoplewould call him the man with the pipe, as a sight, inthe old days when smoking was allowed in pubs ofcourse.

My thanks to the Summer League Committee forasking him to do the honours.

Sitting around the table that night not only withJohn and his son Darren, Terry Weston and Sue,Neil Gerrard and Alison, my Friday night drinkingmate Lee and of course my lovely wife Jackie.

Looking around the rest of the room I suddenlyrealised how good and lucky the game of darts had

been to me personally and how much respect notonly my friends but my competitors had given me. Ithank you for that.....

Now with much sadness The Uttoxeter LadiesDarts League has lost a real steward, an ex-champion of course, a lovely lady, Vivienne Dodd ofDoveridge.

Viv not only loved her family but the village andthe people and without doubt would be the first tohelp out with anything she could, rest in peace andGod Bless.

So in signing off for now, Jackie and myselfwould like to wish you A Very Happy Christmas anda Wonderful New Year. Have a good un, till nexttime, take care and look after each other
