SEMINAR ON THE ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTITUENTS OF DEVATAPUJA

    Lalitamma

Culture of Devatarcana in our Human

Tradition is familiar to all. But it is necessary to

know about the Architecture and the

Constituents of the system also. That is how the

puja is structured and the accessories that fill

up the build to please the deities. There is

science and significance behind the doing,

besides a good deal of sense and sensibility.

Devata is defined in many ways. Yajurveda

offers that any object regarded with honour is

a deity( ya vai stuyate sa vai devata). Satapatha

Brahmana says Devatas are guests for men who

voluntarily visit all at first (Devah prathakmo

atithih manusyanam). Puja is a needed process

to get rid of the sins and turn pure to be able

to get into the portals of deities. So we say at

sankalpa definition as mama upatta samsta duritakshaya dvara, meaning through the gateway that

opens after ones bad conduct is outwitted, the

scope to paramaevara priti occurs and all good

shall result .The letter Pa stands to mean fall

and ja means the birth. Puja, therefore, is a

measure to get rid of the janmapapa and attain

    nirvanasukha.

Lalita paramesvari is said to be provider of

Liberation owing to utterance of her name from

    a to z. (nirvana sukhadayini). Dr. C.L.

    Prabhakar explained the puja-system tracing

from its genesis in practice. Dr. S.R

Krsihnamurthi talked about the science of

Sacrifice. Dr S. Krishnakumar spoke on

shodasopacara puja. Dr Kumar Bhat explained

the puja vidhana according as the Bodhayan

rushi. He said one should ring the bell for 32

times every day in every bodys house that gods

enter and stay in the house doing good anyhouse

without the devatahvana would be thinkable.

Dr Pranesh spoke about the flowers

employed in worship and their individual

efficacies besides the procedure outlined in the

tantra sara. He touched the pancayatana Puja.Dr. T. Sitaramalakshmi spoke on the

manasapuja figuring in the kirtanas of Tyagaraja.

The Planets and their live pariharas for removing

doshas in ones life are described by Lalitamma.

Sri D.N. Munikrishna, IPS, who chaired the

seminar proceedings spoke on the influence of

devatarcana and vigraha aradhana on mankind.

IMPORTANCE OF GHEE LAMP IN POOJA

    Dhananjaya Jog, Ag scientist

Sajyam trivartisamyuktam vahnina yojitam mayaGruhana mangalam dipam tryailokyam timirapah!

Bhaktya dipam prayacchami devaya paramatamaneTrahi mam narakat ghorat divya jyotir namostute!!

    YajurVeda

The magic of this mantra is: ordinary vahni

(fire) becomes divyajyoti(divine Light) when itis offered to the deity and more so to the looksof the deity. It becomes capable to protect thebhakti from the terrific hell. The drusti of godseyes fall on the lamp. And when that touchesyou the whole body becomes beaming withhealth and luster. We become jyotirupas afterthe experiencing (sevana). It is like prayer tothe goddess durga who is present, in all, in theform of jyoti meaning everybody is of jyotisvarupa. when saktijyoti conjoins, there is

enhancement of divyatava n the individual whois devoted. That is all the wonder the ghee lampworks, lit with three wicks dipped deep in theghee. This is one method of making the gheefrom our side to reach the devis and devataswho are the custodians of the maintenance ofthe world and social orders. The care to removesuffering and enhance punya. Like wise the waterbefore abhisheka to deities is just water andafter the rite it turns into tirtha of immeasurablevalue.

Agni Puranclearly states that only oil orGhee (clarified butter) be used in the lamp meant

    forpujaand no other combustible substance.

According to the Science of spirituality the lampwith clarified butter is more sattvik (spirituallypure) as compared to lamp in which oil is used.

This is an important aspect which we willtry to understand in details. So let us see thedifference between the lamp in which Ghee isused and the one with oil.

Generally the use of oil is more prevalentthan that of Ghee. The oil containing lampkindles longer while the ghee containing lampkindles for a short period. Now let us see the

difference from the spiritual view point.* Ghee lamp has more capacity to attract the sattvik

vibrations present in the surrounding atmosphere ascompared to oil lamp.

    * The oil lamp can attract the sattvik vibrations spreadover a maximum distance of 1 meter while the gheelamp can attract sattvik vibrations spread over tillSwarga Lok (heaven)

    * When the oil lamp stops burning the predominance ofraja particles in the atmosphere is enhanced and lastsfor half an hour. On the other hand when the gheelamp stops burning the impact of sattvikta (the qualityof being sattvik) on the atmosphere is experienced evenafter four hours. So pursue the tradition of offering

ghee lamp to the deities. Ghee is the most preciousitem. Veda says ghrutam vai hiranyam and thisstatement implies all significance.
