Covering nearly one eighth of England, Yorkshire is home to two National Parks, the only County in England to be so, and part of a third, the Peak District. North Yorkshire hosts the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks, two areas of spectacularly different scenery but sharing a common theme of preserving the region’s natural and built history and heritage.Don’t think for a minute though that the National Parks are all about the ‘old days’. Both National Parks are ever increasingly becoming home to niche crafts and industries like bee keeping and brewing, glass blowing and game keeping. The villages and towns in the Parks are crafted from local stone mellowed with time and narrow country lanes draw you down to visit places that time forgot.

North Yorkshire is undoubtedly enriched by the region’s heritage. Early Christian waymark crosses on the North York Moors, ruined abbeys, historic industrial workings, stately homes, churches, chapels and... well we could go on but you are probably getting the picture by now. It is nearly impossible to travel across North Yorkshire without becoming inspired by legacy that time has left. Castles with moats and ramparts, thatched cottages seemingly untouched in centuries, bridges and stately homes combine with stunning backdrops to reveal life as it was lived in days gone by.

Travel too fast and you might well miss it, so tarry a while and soak up the heritage that belongs to us all. Better still take a walk, a cycle ride, a river cruise or a horse ride and experience the heritage today as it was built for yesterday.

North Yorkshire Market Towns owe their existence to the rural way of life dating back centuries. People in farming communities did not travel like people today. Their lives revolved around the village or hamlet near where they worked. Early markets were held after Church on Sundays the time when people got together. Soon the hamlets became villages others became Towns and more formal markets were established.

Today everyone loves a Market. The chance to visit an early departmental store entrances us all and even though the livestock aspect has gone from most Towns the rebirth of local foods and crafts has rekindled huge interest in these outside shopping ‘emporiums’. As local centres they offer a clear vision of yesteryear but have adapted themselves throughout the centuries to provide the needs of today. Visit one on Market Day and try to leave without buying something! Bet you can’t!

GREAT FRYUPDALE

Diverse is the word used to describe the North Yorkshire countryside. Forests, rolling dales, huge expanses of purple moorland heather, chalk uplands, fields of yellow oil seed rape and linseed blue, all can be found in North Yorkshire.Dramatic rock outcrops punctuate where farmland meets moorland and birds like lapwings, curlews and buzzards populate the skies. Driving, walking or even flying around North Yorkshire reveals farmland at its best and the reason why North Yorkshire farmers are a treasured commodity.

our impressive YORKSHIRECOASTVibrant resort towns, award winning sandy beaches, dramatic headlands and picture-postcard fishing villages are just some of the reasons why the Yorkshire coast is one of the UK’s most popular seaside destinations. You can also walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs as the striking rocks along this coast are rich with fossils from the Jurassic period. In Scarborough, a medieval castle perched on a prominent cliff top divides the town’s two sheltered bays of golden sand. A lively year-round programme of festivals complements the comedies and plays on offer at the Stephen Joseph Theatre and exhibitions at the Rotunda Museum of Geology.

Tuck into delicious fish and chips while discovering Whitby’s connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and sea-faring adventurers - Captain Cook set sail from here! The magnificent Whitby Abbey is a must see too, with breathtaking views along the coast, while for family fun, Filey is hard to beat with five miles of sandy beach, rock pools and sheltered waters.

Shop LocalAround every corner you can sample locally grown and produced food at delicatessens, cafés, pubs and restaurants. By shopping locally you will not only be supporting local skills and businesses but you will also be helping to reduce food miles and traffic, which has benefits for all of us.

Tread CarefullyHelp us to protect our wildlife by leaving wild flowers for others to enjoy and avoid disturbing birds and other animals particularly during the breeding season from March until June. Keep to paths or tracks where possible and use stiles or gates, remembering to leave gates as you find them. Don’t start campfires or drop cigarettes or matches on the moorland and make sure you take all litter home with you. Dogs are more than welcome in many areas but please keep them under tight control, preferably on a lead.

an awesome GREEN ADVENTURE

Why not give the driver a break for at least one day of your visit and have a car-free adventure? By letting the bus or the train take the strain, you can focus all your energy on the day ahead rather than the road ahead!

Busy BusesHop on the bus for a lot less fuss! The area has an extensive network of buses that run throughout the year and will take you from A to B and plenty of places in between. Go to www.transportdirect.info or www.traveline.org.uk for timetables or ask at one of our Tourist Information Centres for help with planning a route. Pick up a copy of our leaflet ‘Sit Back Enjoy the Ride’ and see how many places there are to visit on the network.

All AboardStep back in time on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (www.nymr.co.uk) and let its heritage steam and diesel trains take you through the moors and out to the coast. The Esk Valley Railway (www.eskvalleyrailway.co.uk) connects Middlesbrough and Whitby taking in secluded valleys, rolling moorland and picturesque villages along the way.
