VisitYorkshire | West & South Yorkshire
West &SouthYorkshire
Welcome to
A part of Britain where traditional markettowns contrast with bustling cities, Westand South Yorkshire is the place to visitwhether you are looking for a tranquil, relaxing holiday or just a few nights awayto explore city life.
With huge redevelopment in recent years, you’ll find a newcontemporary edge to the centres of Leeds, Bradford andSheffield to name but a few. All have their attractions, such as theCity Museums and Royal Armouries in Leeds and the NationalMedia Museum & IMAX cinema in Bradford. Sport enthusiasts arewell catered for too, watch Leeds United FC at Elland Road, enjoythe Rugby and watch domestic Yorkshire or even internationalcricket at Headingley.
And lets not forget Sheffield, England’s fourth largest city, itboasts around 150 woodlands and 50 public parks and as a resultit’s the country’s greenest city. What’s more the Peak DistrictNational Park - ideal for walking, climbing and a whole host ofother pursuits - is right on the doorstep, so it’s the perfect basefor combining a country and city break.
Country towns including Otley, Ilkley and Wetherby, plus the littlePennine towns such as Hebden Bridge and Marsden offer aslower pace of life. Here you’ll discover the landscapes thatinspired the Brontës, and their home Haworth remains almostunchanged. ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ viewers will recognisepicturesque Holmfirth, whose moors climb on up into the PeakDistrict National Park. This part of Yorkshire was celebrated forits textiles and the wealth of the Victorian era can still be seen inthe superb architecture of towns such as Halifax andHuddersfield, fine bases for exploring the beautiful Penninecountryside
It’s a county where the ‘great outdoors’ really is great - climbing, caving, canoeing, angling and sailing are just some of theactivities available, with unbeatable walking country to boot (punintended). Footpaths include the tough Pennine Way, the BrontëWay and dozens of waymarked local routes.
Enjoy your stay, enjoy West & South Yorkshire

STEP BACK IN TIMEWANDER into 16th, 18th and 19th-century thatched cottages, the Edwardian photographic studio with all its equipment, or just enjoy being able to explore such a large variety of historic buildings.
DISCOVER how your ancestors lived. Visit the workshops of tradi-tional crafts. Pop into the Post Office and other village shops.
MARVEL at the inventiveness of your forebears. See how they worked the land and moved around.
STROLL through cottage gardens and a medieval garth. Visit the potting shed before seeing rare cornfield flowers andworking fields with animals and vegetables kept and grown in the traditional way
EXPLOREthe wide range of historic buildings rescued from around the area. They and their contents bring to life the lives of ordinary people from pre-historic times to the present day.
Each of the easily accessed historic buildings on the 4 acre site shows a different aspect of rural life. From the 16th-century manor house, with its huge wooden cruck frames, to the Iron Age Roundhouse and settlement. Outside there are medieval garths, cottage gardens, a farming area with animals and a cornfield with over 40 species of cornfield flowers. There’s plenty of space for children to run around and explore, quiet corners for picnics and the dog can come too - on a lead please.
