MAKING A DIFFERENCE
WKU student’s homeschooling family takes full advantage of KET resources
Millie Ronkainen
Learn more about KET Distance Learning at dl.KET.org 3KET.org
Rural Kentucky is nowhere more peaceful and pastoral than LaRue County, the land where
Abraham Lincoln was born and trod as a boy. It’s where, famously, he studied by candlelight and started on the road to becoming one of our most learned and scholarly of presidents.
It’s in these quiet environs that Jim and Diane Ronkainen live among the rolling acres — and it’s where their six children, beginning with the eldest, Millie, are homeschooled.
“She likes to learn,” said Diane of her daughter, who immediately (though politely) interrupted. “No, Mom — I LOVE to learn!”
That enthusiasm drew the Ronkainens to seek out challenging courses for Millie, who also spent a summer at the Governor’s School for the Arts. So when Diane opened Visions magazine in 2011 and read of another Kentucky homeschooling family using KET’s Distance Learning courses, she quickly went about enrolling her.
“I knew about Distance Learning, but I didn’t know it was for homeschoolers, too,” said Diane, who, along with her husband, is a mechanical engineer. “So when I saw that article I checked into it and realized it would be pretty good for us.”
Millie began with Latin I and immediately appreciated its in-depth instruction.
“The first class I took was Latin, and it turned out to be really fun,”
Millie recalled. “I really liked Ann [Denny], the teacher — and I liked how the history class was incorporated into the Latin language.”
Learning Latin later bore fruit when Millie enrolled in Spanish for dual high school/college credit through Elizabethtown Community and Technical College — and eventually took the ACT.
“All the derivatives were really, really useful when I took the ACT because they have that whole
vocabulary section,” she said. “Even if I didn’t know exactly what the word meant, if I could relate it to a Latin root I had a much better chance of getting it right.”
Next up was AP Physics, which continued Millie on her road to accruing college credit before she ever enrolled.
“Physics was amazing,” she said. “I got an A in the class and I passed the AP test.” Studying for that exam also tutored her in how to prepare for other standardized tests.
Though taking physics helped her to realize that she wouldn’t be following her parents into engineering,
she was pleased with her success in an AP class. In addition, she said instructor Chuck Duncan’s availability played a key role in her success.
“He was always really helpful,” said Millie. “I could email him and he would be back with me within a couple of hours: very quickly and very thoroughly — even on Saturdays!”
Now a sophomore at Western Kentucky University, Millie has embraced the rigorous study of WKU’s Honors College, a competitive
program where students are chosen for their high GPAs and college-admission test scores.
“I wanted the smaller, honors classes. I wanted that academic integrity,” said Millie, who is majoring in biology, minoring in chemistry and music, and hopes to pursue a career in medicine.
“The honors classes are more challenging, they teach me more, I have more interaction with the
professor, and the students there care more about what they’re learning.”
Back home, the Ronkainens have plans to enroll younger sister Anna in KET’s Spanish courses — but Distance Learning is just one of the ways KET contributes to the family’s education.
Programs on KET about World War II, D-Day, the Civil War, the Kennedy assassination, and the Roosevelts supplement the kids’ history instruction. And Nova and Nature fit naturally into science instruction.
“The only three stations we get on our TV are KET, KET2 and KETKY,” said Diane. “It’s all we watch, really.”
“Physics wasamazing. I got an A in the class and I passed the AP test.”

COVER STORY
Fall brings two new ‘Masterpiece’ series, a Walt Disney biography, and ‘Doc Martin’ star
As summer fades into autumn, KET and PBS bring you a spectacular fall season, led by two new Masterpiece dramas: the epic “Indian Summers” and “Arthur and George,” featuring Doc Martin star Martin Clunes.
In 1932 the height of privilege was to be British in India, and the high point was the summer season at the hard-partying colonial retreat of Simla in the Himalayan foothills. Rude reality intrudes on this spectacular paradise in
“Indian Summers,” starring Oscar-nominee Julie Walters as the wily hostess of Simla society. Set during the twi-light era of the British Raj, the meticulously recreated series airs in nine episodes on Masterpiece. Framed by the beginning and end of the summer sea-son, when India’s British rulers left the hot plains for the cool slopes of Simla, “Indian Summers” centers on three brother-sister pairs, adrift Americans, and the manipula-tive military widow who presides like an empress over the Royal Simla Club, where the ruling class lounges in subtropical splendor, sipping gin and tonics, running the country, and dancing the night away.

Walt Disney: American ExperienceKET Begins Monday, Sept. 14 • 9/8 pmKET2 Begins Sunday, Sept. 20 • 9/8 pm

Death In Paradise KET Begins Thursday, Sept. 24 • 10/9 pmKET2 Begins Tuesday, Sept. 29 • 10/9 pm
Sent to the tiny island of Saint-Marie to solve a mysterious murder, Detective Inspector Richard Poole is a total fish out of water in this lighthearted series. Close Encounters of the Third KindKET Saturday, Sept. 5 • 9/8 pm KET2 Friday, Sept. 11 • 9/8 pm
Who can forget the sight of Richard Dreyfuss making mysterious, flat-topped mounds and haunted by a five-note melody in the 1977 Steven Speilberg hit? When he and the other similarly obsessed citizens are inexorably drawn to a clearing in the wilderness, they, and we, confront the existence of alien life forms — and the impact is stunning. Lauded by critics and moviegoers alike, it was showered by numerous award nomi-nations, including winning one Oscar. Close Encounters was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
GandhiKET Saturday, Sept. 12 • 9/8 pm KET2 Friday, Sept. 18 at 9/8 pm
“This is the sort of rare epic film that spans the decades, that uses the proverbial cast of thou-sands, and yet follows a human thread from beginning to end,” said Roger Ebert in his 1982 review of this remarkable film. “Gandhi is no more overwhelmed by the scope of its produc-tion than was Gandhi overwhelmed by all the glory of the British Empire.” Winner of eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Cinema-tography, and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Ben Kingsley, this epic tells the story of the Oxford-educated religious and spiritual leader who led India to independence through non-violent civil disobedience.

Director David Lean utilizes much of the cast later featured in Doctor Zhivago, as well as other enormous stars of the day, including Anthony Quinn, José Ferrer, and Claude Rains. Of course, the star is undeniably Peter O’Toole in a role that made him an international superstar and the recipi-ent of numerous Oscar nominations — but never a win. The film tells the story of the inordinately complex man labeled everything from hero, to char-latan, to sadist, who blazed his way to glory in the Arabian desert, then sought anonymity as a common sol-dier under an assumed name.
Doctor ZhivagoKET Saturday, Sept. 26 • 9/8 pm KET2 Friday, Oct. 2 • 9/8 pm
During the Russian Revolution, Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif), is a young doctor who has been raised by his aunt and uncle following his father’s suicide. Yuri falls in love with beautiful Lara Guishar (Julie Christie), who has been having an affair with her mother’s lover, Victor Komarovsky (Rod Steiger), an unscrupulous business-man. Yuri, however, ends up marrying his cousin, Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin). But when he and Lara meet again years later, the spark of love reignites. The 1965 film, which also features Alec Guiness and Klaus Kinski, was not shown in Russia until 1994.

SHORT TAKES
While many viewers eagerly anticipate this time of year for all the great new fall-season pro-grams, it’s also back-to-school time in Kentucky. And, as always, that’s a particu-larly exciting time for KET.
Our talented staff of educators and pro-ducers are launching the latest in engaging, standards-based tools developed to enhance the learning experience for students and teachers alike.
Plus, our Education Consultants are busy visiting schools across the Commonwealth to provide workshops and trainings on these and the many other instructional resources available from KET.
One of the most popular and highly uti-lized is PBS LearningMedia, a digital reposi-tory of videos, interactives, lesson plans, and more. Nearly two million resources – many of which are produced by KET – are downloaded each year by Kentucky teachers, students, and parents.
From our events leading up to the new school year, including summer profes-sional development for educators and our Super Saturday for kids, to everything we do throughout the year, KET is proud to be a valued partner in education and to bring learning to life.
We invite you to explore all that KET has to offer and wish everyone a successful a school year!

New KET teacher training takes aim at bullying in Kentucky schools
This summer, KET debuted Promoting Positive Behavior in Schools III, a self-paced online course that addresses the issue of bullying and what can be done to prevent it.
To illustrate effective strategies for dealing with this widespread prob-lem, it offers dramatic scenarios in which actors play the roles of students and school personnel.
Like other KET professional development courses, it fulfills state-mandated training requirements for all staff at Kentucky public schools, from teachers and administrators to bus drivers and custodians.
The course is available free of charge at KET.pbs.learningmedia.org.
