visionFIREBOX:Industrial image processing using FireWire technology

Flexible image processing for complex assignments

The right solution

When it comes to choosing a suita-ble solution, the starting point is adetailed analysis of the individualproject and the customer’s specific terms of reference. The completeproduct spectrum we offer, rangingfrom simple smart cameras throughto high-end systems, allows us torecommend the optimum solutionevery time.

cient partner to a wide spectrum ofdifferent industrial sectors.

Dimensional control

The visionFIREBOX also provi-des an outstanding solution fordemanding dimensional controlapplications. These include moni-toring

- distances - angles- radii- parallelism- and curvature

as well as gauging diametersand contours. Tolerances anddimensions can be entered onli-ne. With a resolution of up to1/10 pixel, measurements can beperformed to an accuracy of frac-tions of a millimetre.

Visualization

Online visualization permits cleardepiction of all information of rele-vance to the machine operator, such as

- measurement data- inspection results- images- test statistics- inspection times

All the individual elements can bedefined and arranged on an appli-cation-specific basis.

Presence and completeness checking

Presence checking is one of the most frequent applications of industrial image processing. The wide variety of possible distinguishingfeatures which can be detected (colour, geometry, brightness etc.) makes visionFIREBOX ideal for this type of application. There is no

restriction imposed by the softwareon the number of test windows, and operation is simplified by flexi-ble algorithms for segmenting andimage processing.

Print quality control

Print errors are a quality defect andmust be detected at first glance. The use of visionFIREBOX permitsproducts to be tested according toidentical and objective criteria. Thisis done by teach-in of a good refe-rence image which is stored in thesystem.

Depending on the setting, errors inboth the imprint itself and in thebackground are detected. Test sensitivity can be adjusted torequirements. Any occurring bright-ness or position fluctuations arecompensated by the software.

OCR/OCV

A highly developed softwaresystem (OCR) permits letters, num-bers and logos to be read on fast-moving objects. The use of a neu-ronal network combines good flexi-bility with reliable evaluation. Othercharacters can be simply addedusing a menu.

If a legibility check (OCV) is requi-red, target value information andrejection thresholds can be enteredinto the system using input masks. The flexible software tools evenpermit the reliable scanning of radi-ally applied or inverted characters.

Colour monitoring

Mass products are frequently diffe-rentiated only by their colour. Colourcoding is often used in order to avoidconfusion during the assembly ofindustrial products. It is only with theinstallation of colour cameras that itis possible to distinguish betweendifferent colour nuances such asblue and green.

Detected colour objects can additio-nally be checked for completeness, shape and dimensional accuracy. FireWire technology permits theoperation of colour cameras withoutspecial additional hardware. Hybridoperation of colour and monochro-me colours is also possible.

Type monitoring

Products often bear no distinguis-hing inscriptions or code markingsduring the production process butstill need to be clearly identified.visionFIREBOX features both aneuronal identification and a pat-tern and contour control function(optional extras).Typical applications for these func-tional features include the differen-tiation of products with differingcontours.

1D and 2D code scanning

Another software tool permits datamatrix codes as well as all com-monly used bar codes to be scan-ned. Benefits include good legibilityeven where contrast is poor, andscanning of codes applied directlyon the end product. If severalcodes have to be read simultane-ously, placement of one inspectionwindow per code is sufficient.Alongside pure code scanning, other applications such as the posi-tion output of codes or additionalplain text scanning can be imple-mented without additional expense.

The benefits of PC-based image processing

Efficient hardware

The inspection of complex qualitycharacteristics and the storage anddocumentation of test results cou-pled with ever shorter cycle timesplace increasingly stringentdemands on image processingsystems. The resulting demand forever more efficient hardware is ide-ally met by the short innovationcycles typically found in field ofcomputer technology.

Open-ended, flexible technology

Modern production systems aredesigned to accommodate minimalbatch sizes coupled with stringentquality requirements.visionFIREBOX imposes practicallyno restriction on the number of sto-red test programs. For variant pro-duction, this substantially reducesthe set-up time required for newproducts, as the system can makeuse of already stored test routines.

Simple operation

Parameterization and navigationare performed using the familiarWindows user interface. The testprogram is interactively generatedwithout the need for elaborate pro-gramming, compilation etc. Thetest results can be stored and eva-luated using any PC. Test programdocumentation can be exportedusing the XML format.

Why digital FireWire cameras?

Monochrome or colour

Digital FireWire cameras (IEEE1394) from Leuze electronic permitinterference-free pick-up and trans-mission of camera images in opti-mum picture quality. With a wideselection of different resolutions onoffer, precisely the right camera isavailable for every conceivableapplication. All the cameras are theprogressive-scan type, and areavailable in a monochrome orcolour version. Important cameraparameters (shutter time, gain etc.)can be set and stored using theimage processing software.

Plug and play bus system

As a high-speed bus system,FireWire is standardized in line withindustrial standard IEEE 1394 forthe transmission of image data. The transfer rate of 400 Mbits/spermits quality control also of fastmoving objects. FireWire camerasare plug and play components, andare automatically recognized by thevisionFirebox, irrespective of whet-her colour or monochromecameras are used.
