Syllabus This unit is designed to further develop your capacity for reflection and research-based enquiry into skills, techniques, methods and processes of visual art. You will gain further skills in articulating the studio research process and further develop conceptual frameworks that support artistic practice.

Introduction This is the first Fine Art third year unit where you will engage in a self and staff directed program.

VSW31 is a research unit. In this unit you will begin to explore and develop a visual art project by applying appropriate research strategies, visual communication and technical skills to articulate your ideas. The focus is on research and investigation, not finished works.

In VSW31, you are required to identify an area of investigation that will become the foundation of your third year studio program. Ideas/concept, choice of materials, techniques and methods will be generated by you and in negotiation with your tutor. Rather than working from set themes and exercises, you are required to develop the basis of your own art project in this unit.

The Unit Outline, Study Guide, set of Readings and other online learning resources provide the basis from which you will develop an independent art project which articulates and reflects the world around you.

We hope you enjoy the first stage of your 3rd year project in this unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of nine graduate attributes during their course of study. These tell an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and attributes which employers say would be useful in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the graduate attributes through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes tell you what you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully designed to test your achievement of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes.

Your course has been designed so that on graduating we can say you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Attributes through the assurance of learning process in each unit.

Curtin's Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of this unit students can: Graduate Attributes addressed

1 Apply innovative skills, techniques, methods or processes within a studio practice

2 Critique and reflect upon the application of skills, techniques, methods and processes

3 Effectively document the decision-making and the experimentation process to present research findings

4 Originate and manufacture an innovative series of contemporary works

Apply discipline knowledge Thinking skills (use analytical skills to solve problems)

Information skills (confidence to investigate new ideas)

Communication skills Technology skillsLearning how to learn (apply principles learnt to new situations) (confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems)

International perspective (value the perspectives of others)

Cultural understanding (value the perspectives of others)

Professional Skills (work independently and as a team) (plan own work)

Learning Activities In VSW31, you will focus on developing appropriate research methodologies and exploring your ideas in a visual format. This will require broad research initially, alongside extensive testing and experimentation with your preferred media or materials. VSW31 introduces the importance of open, investigative, visual research - this is the emphasis of VSW31. This unit is not about producing finished works, but about the quality and breadth of research and investigation that is undertaken in order to identify an area of interest that will provide a strong basis for further exploration, development and resolution in units VSW32-34.

To assist in the appropriate visual realisation of your ideas, you will need to undertake intensive research to consider the field of art practice you wish to explore and to determine what will be your main concept and approach. Your tutor is available to assist you in developing ideas and planning useful and appropriate strategies.

Students are required to:

l Complete the Readings provided for the unit as outlined in the Study Guide. The Study Guide is available in Blackboard under the Unit Materials link.

l Participate and engage regularly in online discussion, whether it is in dialogue with other students sharing your ideas or discussing your research on your chosen area of investigation, on the Discussion Board (located in Blackboard) for this unit.

l Participate in live Collaborate sessions as scheduled by your tutor. l Utilise all of the learning resources available through Blackboard as well as those that you identify through your

own further research to progress your project. l Complete all assessment items. l Comply with all university regulations including those pertaining to academic integrity

TEXTS, REFERENCES AND FURTHER READING

You are expected to access the prescribed readings in eReserve as well as appropriately direct your reading and research as suitable to your major area of interest. This will build on your existing knowledge and contribute to your project. Your tutor may also suggest specific additional readings that are relevant to you.

Recommended texts

Web-Based Resources

Take the time to familiarise yourself with useful and interesting websites relevant to your art practice. There are an untold number of sites available to you to visit on the web and it is important that you are able to develop competent research skills that will enable you to find appropriate information relatively efficiently.

It is highly recommended that you regularly read and familiarise yourself with current journals pertaining to the discipline and your area of interest; some suggested journals are listed below – some of these are available as online journals or electronically via the Curtin Library E-Reserve (see link below). As well as Art and Design journals it is suggested that you familiarise yourself with a broad range of ideas and attitudes in contemporary popular culture. This may include music, film, dance, political theory, comparative religion, sport, the environment, travel, in fact any aspect of contemporary living that makes you more aware of the society of which you are a part.

Art is a critical activity that involves challenging stereotypical attitudes, taking creative risks, embracing healthy scepticism, being reflective and responsive. Value systems are often open to examination and myths subject to investigation. The link to Oxford Art Online – Grove Art Online database is available in your Unit Materials.

Late assessment policy

This ensures that the requirements for submission of assignments and other work to be assessed are fair, transparent, equitable, and that penalties are consistently applied.

1. All assessments students are required to submit will have a due date and time specified on this Unit Outline. 2. Students will be penalised by a deduction of ten percent per calendar day for a late assessment submission

(e.g. a mark equivalent to 10% of the total allocated for the assessment will be deducted from the marked value for every day that the assessment is late). This means that an assessment worth 20 marks will have two marks deducted per calendar day late. Hence if it was handed in three calendar days late and given a mark of 16/20, the student would receive 10/20. An assessment more than seven calendar days overdue will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0.

Assessment extension

A student unable to complete an assessment task by/on the original published date/time (e.g. examinations, tests) or due date/time (e.g. assignments) must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment Extension form (available from the Forms page at students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate and provide evidence for exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control that prevent them from completing/submitting the assessment task.

The student will be expected to lodge the form and supporting documentation with the unit coordinator before the assessment date/time or due date/time. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the date or due date of the assessment task where the student is able to provide an acceptable explanation as to why he or she was not able to submit the application prior to the assessment date. An application for an assessment extension will not be accepted after the date of the Board of Examiners' meeting.

Exceptions to the Above

To apply for an assessment extension for this unit you are required to complete an application form that can be found at the following link: http://students.curtin.edu.au/administration/documents/Application_forAssessmentExtension.pdf

You need to attach supporting documentation to your application (see page 1 of the application form above for further information) and forward the completed forms to [email protected].

You will receive notification, via an Official Curtin Communication (OCC) and via an email to your student account, letting you know the outcome of your application. Please read the notification carefully and follow all required instructions.

If you do not complete your forms in full or supply appropriate supporting documents the processing of the application may be delayed and/or your application denied.

Deferred assessments

Supplementary assessments

Supplementary assessments are not available in this unit.

If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check OASIS for details.

Reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities/health circumstances likely to impact on studies

A Curtin Access Plan (CAP) is a document that outlines the type and level of support required by a student with a disability or health condition to have equitable access to their studies at Curtin.  This support can include alternative exam or test arrangements, study materials in accessible formats, access to Curtin’s facilities and services or other support as discussed with an advisor from Disability Services (disability.curtin.edu.au).  Documentation is required from your treating Health Professional to confirm your health circumstances.

If you think you may be eligible for a CAP, please contact Disability Services. If you already have a CAP please provide it to the Unit Coordinator at the beginning of each study period.

Referencing style

The referencing style for this unit is Chicago.

More information can be found on this style from the Library web site: http://libguides.library.curtin.edu.au/referencing.

Academic Integrity (including plagiarism and cheating) Any conduct by a student that is dishonest or unfair in connection with any academic work is considered to be academic misconduct. Plagiarism and cheating are serious offences that will be investigated and may result in penalties such as reduced or zero grades, annulled units or even termination from the course. Assessments under investigation will not be given a mark until the matter is concluded. This may result in the unit grade being withheld or a grade of Fail Incomplete (F-IN) until a decision has been made by the Student Disciplinary Panel. This may impact on enrolment in further units/study periods.

Plagiarism occurs when work or property of another person is presented as one's own, without appropriate acknowledgement or referencing. Submitting work which has been produced by someone else (e.g. allowing or contracting another person to do the work for which you claim authorship) is also plagiarism. Submitted work is subjected to a plagiarism detection process, which may include the use of text matching systems or interviews with students to determine authorship.

Cheating includes (but is not limited to) asking or paying someone to complete an assessment task for you or any use of unauthorised materials or assistance during an examination or test.

From Semester 1, 2016, all incoming coursework students are required to complete Curtin’s Academic Integrity Program (AIP). If a student does not pass the program by the end of their first study period of enrolment at Curtin, their marks will be withheld until they pass. More information about the AIP can be found at: https://academicintegrity.curtin.edu.au/students/AIP.cfm

Refer to the Academic Integrity tab in Blackboard or academicintegrity.curtin.edu.au for more information, including student guidelines for avoiding plagiarism.

Additional information

Plagiarism is taken very seriously at Curtin University. When submitting an assignment in this unit you are declaring that you have created all work, and that it has not been previously submitted for assessment for another unit or at another institution.  When including images or text not created by you /or not entirely created by you (as research or to provide context) you must:

l Reference these images or texts using Chicago referencing. l Include in-text references. l Include a reference list at the end of the file/document.

Referencing is relevant to all forms of assessment including essays, process files/journals, art or design portfolios and/or reports.

It is a requirement of your enrolment that you refer to the Curtin University Academic Integrity website prior to submitting your work. http://academicintegrity.curtin.edu.au/students/

Failure to follow these guidelines and being found to be in breach of Curtin University’s Management of Plagiarism Policy will result in a penalty being applied to your assignment and/or your academic status.

PRESENTATION AND SUBMITTING FOLIO FOR ASSESSMENT

The format of your presentation should be well considered for the assessment of your work. It is expected that you learn to develop good documentation skills with digital photography to best present your work for online assessment. A submission which shows your working methodology and clearly presents your ideas and outcomes will help to present your work at its best. Use the Learning Resources to peruse the Guidelines and Examples of Presentations for VSW31.

It is a requirement that you sign and attach the Assignment Coversheet > Declaration and submit with your work for each assessment.

All project work and items for each assessment are submitted online via the unit ASSESSMENT DROP BOX wherever possible. Please refer to information detailed below:

ONLINE BLACKBOARD > ASSESSMENT DROP BOX

When submitting your work for assessment, make sure you include all of the information in one single file. The preferred file formats for your submission are either:  PowerPoint presentation (or similar), Word doc (or similar) or Adobe pdf file. Note: work submitted as multiple files will be returned to you to be re-submitted within a specified time-frame as a single file. If re-submission does not meet the required date as requested assessment penalties may be applied.

Presentation and Documentation: To ensure you present your best images for assessment we suggest you experiment with different settings, especially as your intention should be to convey the best possible record of your work. The assessment of your work is compromised if the quality of images is poor: e.g. out of focus, badly lit, low resolution (150dpi recommended), or have been digitally manipulated. It is appropriate to crop images to reduce any background interference. Use a neutral background like a white wall or black/white paper to place your work on before photographing.

Visual Diary: You can scan your visual diary or use a digital camera to document the appropriate pages.

Enrolment

It is your responsibility to ensure that your enrolment is correct - you can check your enrolment through the eStudent option on OASIS, where you can also print an Enrolment Advice.
