Virtual Learning Program provides secondary students with online learning opportunities. What is the YCSD VHS? The York County School Division (YCSD) Virtual High School (VHS) is a program that offers interactive online courses to secondary students. Courses are delivered using a course “learning management system” through the Internet and available to students 24/7. Students are actively engaged in online discussions and learn to track messages, submit documents electroni- cally, and meet online with teachers and students through a “virtual classroom”. Students must have an active email account, access to word processing and presentation software, Internet and other supported applications. Students must stay on task, meet deadlines, and seek help from the teacher when needed. Since students have ac- cess 24 hours a day, it is suggested that students check the course frequently to view new announcements and discussion postings. When do classes begin & end? Online courses begin and end with the school’s academic calendar each year. Participating school divisions may enroll students for a minimum of one semester. Who will teach the course? Courses are taught by highly-qualified teachers who promote engagement in the online environment. Teachers strive to fos- ter an online community within their classes. What about training? Once a student is enrolled in an online course, training ses- sions are scheduled and announced by a Virtual High School Administrator. Training sessions will be held at a York Coun- ty School Division high school, and on-going sessions are scheduled. Is there a cost to take the course? Some online courses require tuition payment, and the amount of tuition is determined based on the enrollment. How do I take mandated testing online? All online students report to an on-site location to take the required SOL tests, semester exams and AP tests. What happens if I need technical assistance? Students should notify their online teachers immediately. The York County Public Libraries are available for students to use computers to access the online courses. Students should make arrangements to visit a library to continue assigned work. What happens if I withdraw from the course? There will be a period for enrolling and withdrawing from a course. Students who withdraw after the 3rd week of start of classes may incur a financial penalty. Multidivision OnlineProvider VirtualLearning Programwww.doe.virginia.gov/news/news_releases/2011/jun6The York County School Division is pleased to be an ap-proved Multidivision Online Provider for the Virtual Schools Initiative in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We invite participating school divisions to preview the virtual program information when making important decisions to integrate virtual learning. It is an easy process to get started using the procedures provided on the YCSD website.

Courses have been designed to meet full year or semester academic requirements. YCSD offers courses in both year-long or 4x4 format to help students achieve original credit or credit recovery. Tuition is based on a full year or semester enrollment.
