Pilot Investigation of a Virtual Gastric Band
Hypnotherapy Intervention
• This 24-week-long pilot investigation of 30 men and women with a BMI > 27 kg/m(2) aimed to determine whether virtual gastric band (VGB) hypnotherapy has an effect on weight loss in overweight adults, compared to relaxation hypnotherapy and a self-directed diet.
• There was no significant difference between VGB hypnotherapy as a main effect on weight loss, (X(2) = 0.67, p = .41, df = 1) and there was no evidence of differential weight loss over time, (X(2) = 4.2, p = .64, df = 6).
• Levels of weight loss and gain :
-17 kg to + 4.7 kg in the VGB group
9.3 kg to +7.8 kg in the relaxation group
Results of the study:
• We first looked at age but found no relationship between the age of our participants and the amount of weight that they lost. It seems that people are just as capable of losing weight in their seventies as they are in their twenties.
• We also investigated whether there was a relationship between the weight lost as a result of hypnosis-based treatment and the length of time between treatment and follow up. There was a slight, but weak linear relationship between the two. There was no relationship between the length of time to follow up and the average monthly weight loss.
• Out of the 125 people who did the GMB, 117 lost weight. Of the 117 who lost weight, the average weight lost was 9.67kg. The average weight lost per month was 1.8kg.
• Based on the sample of clients analysed:
• 94% successfully lost weight
• 60% lost more than 5kg
• 30% lost more than 10kg.
