Background

The concept of a ‘virtual gastric band’ for weight loss, using hypnosis,

has been around for a year or so and has generated a lot of positive

press from the global media.

At the time of its first appearance, 80% of my clients were coming to

me for weight control. My system at the time worked fairly well, but I

decided to include the ‘virtual gastric band’ into my own weight control

program, with a view to subjecting it to a trial.

I issued an invitation for volunteers to take part in the free trial and

had little difficulty in achieving the required numbers. I took on 25

volunteers - of different shapes, sizes, age ranges and gender - and saw them in a group setting. Given that the treatment was not to be

personalised, I had envisaged perhaps only a 40% success rate,

believing that group treatment might dilute its effectiveness.

Results of Initial Trial

I saw the group for just three one hour sessions. I was astounded to

record that they lost over 14 stones between them in only three

weeks, and all but one reported a change in their eating habits.

Press and Publicity

Both local and national media became very interested in the trial

results. I have subsequently featured in the Sun newspaper, The

Daily Express, the India Times and The Yorkshire Post, a regional

newspaper. My local television news programme, ‘Look North’, also

took up the story, followed by local radio stations and national Radio Five Live.

I am now due to start filming with a television production company

looking to build a documentary around the battle to get the NHS to take my system on board.

Following this exposure, and the word-of-mouth spread of the

success rate, I now regularly see between 30-50 clients per week - and this number continues to grow!

I have included some copies of the press articles in the appendices,

which you may use to promote this service in your own clinic should

you wish to do so.

Medical Practitioners and the Future

Following these initial results, my aim has been to ensure that as

many people as possible benefit from the treatment. In the UK, we

have the National Health Service (NHS) - the government funds the

health-care of the nation - and I would like to see the NHS able to refer people for hypnotherapy for weight control. This would enable

ALL to benefit, and not just those who can afford to pay. Although

realistically it will not work for everyone, it certainly has the potential

to help many.

This is why I would like to see as many therapists as possible using

this system - the more offering the service and producing successful

results, the more the medical profession will notice, and ultimately the

more the public can benefit from it directly.

I am now based in a GP’s surgery, and have conducted a further trial

for one of the doctors there. Ten patients were taken, some of whom

had been refused gastric surgery due to financial constraints imposed by the NHS. Again, the programme was found to produce positive

results, this time for nine out of the ten patients.

Following receipt of those results by the NHS, I am now currently

involved in direct talks with them about further medical trials. I also have a bariatric surgeon willing to put me on his database, and a

head diabetes consultant interested in the programme (copies of

these communications can be found in the appendices).

Weight Control

We know that diets don’t work

Most people who follow a traditional dieting system will lose weight

whilst they are on that diet. But, as soon as the diet stops, the weight

invariably returns, often leaving them heavier than before the diet

began! It is estimated that 95 percent of all people who diet

experience this cycle.

Most diets include some form of deprivation and/or denial; some

involve counting calories, or points, but all merely serve to

programme the mind to think about food. Thus, when an individual gives up a diet, he will find himself thinking about food more than he

ever did before!

And, in the denial of comfort foods, in eating different meals to the

rest of the family, three things happen: the brain fights against it, the body fights against it, and the day to day environment fights against

it.

How often do you hear of those who say to themselves each Monday: “That’s it! I’m going to stop eating. Just as soon as I’ve had my

dinner. And then I’m going to eat only salad.” Of course, the good

intentions quickly lapse and it’s back to Stage One…and misery all

over again!

Because most eating habits are deeply engrained in the

subconscious, the outcome is the same each time a certain set of

circumstances prevail.

Conscious self-denial of something can often increase the desire for that very thing, and eating a little less than we need - but eating

anything we want - can actually lead to weight loss. Cutting out

favourite foods completely is a bad idea, but cutting down on those

foods is achievable and sustainable.

Everyone knows that eating less and exercising more will lead to a

better body-shape, improved fitness and all-round health. This

programme employs a virtual gastric band and other mind management techniques, and is most decidedly NOT a diet. It

enables clients to form new habits that they can maintain; there is no

deprivation and thus clients are liberated from having to think about

food all the time; they eat consciously, and are able to listen to what

their stomachs are telling them. The result is steady, progressive weight loss - without dieting.

The Virtual Gastric Band Programme

This Virtual Gastric Band Programme is conducted over a four-week

period. The four one-hour sessions are designed to bring about a

permanent change in a client’s eating habits, and focus on the person the client wants to be. This is not a short-term fix. Creating new habits

with your clients – to get them where they want to be, and to enable

them to remain there – will generally take 28 days.

The Programme includes a support CD, which the client is asked to listen to each day, and which will reinforce the new messages that will

bring about the permanent change in their eating behaviour.

Although not absolutely necessary, it is also advisable to provide the client with a personalized CD at the end of the programme, targeting

the encouragement of exercise.

I have enclosed copies of the Virtual Gastric Band Support CD which I designed and use daily, and the script in written format so that you

can easily create your own recording.

I have also enclosed an example of a personalized CD, and the

script, that you may use if you wish.

The imaginary ‘operation’ to fit the Virtual Gastric band can be greatly

enhanced by the use of operating theatre sounds and clinical smells.

First Steps - That Initial Enquiry

The phone rings, and a client asks about the Virtual Gastric Band

Programme. This is your opportunity to persuade the client to commit

to the programme.

Here is what you may want to say:

1. How did you hear about me? (Always useful to know for future marketing purposes);

2. Explain how the programme came about, the results of a free

trial, and that it was proved to be positive for 24 of the 25 individuals, the group losing 14 stone in 3 weeks;

Emphasise that it is not a diet - the client can eat smaller

portions of anything they want;

Explain that expected average weight loss is half a stone in the

first week, and maybe 1-2 lbs a week after that, and that if you can get them to lose 1-2lbs a week without dieting, would they

be happy with that?;

Explain that it is hoped that medical practitioners will take on

the Programme, so that more people can benefit from it via the NHS.

Explain that, although this all sounds really good, it is not

guaranteed. Similarly, doctors can’t guarantee anything, but this Programme is proving very successful;

3. Has the client had any experience of hypnosis? If not, explain

what hypnosis is and what it isn’t; that every human being can be hypnotized, and that hypnosis is just a relaxed state.

4. Explain that the four sessions should bring about a permanent

change in the way that your client thinks about food, but after the four weeks, if at any point it was felt necessary, you should

offer a top-up session, at something other than normal price.

You need someone to get to where they want to be and stay

there. Reduced prices make this affordable.

5. How much is it? Advise the client of your price and inform him

that this includes four one-hour sessions, personalized to him

as an individual; he will receive a support CD that he should

listen to every day, and, at the end of the programme, he will receive a CD that is personalized to him individually. This is a

potentially life-changing treatment and not a four-week,

temporary fix.

The First Consultation

Firstly, recap everything you discussed on the telephone; how the

programme came about, the success rates, what hypnosis is and

isn’t.

Explain that he will not be weighed, that it’s not about what the scales

say, but how he feels about himself, and he will know from week to week what has changed. If he is going to weigh himself, advise him

that he should do so just once a week, and that to do so more often

may serve to demotivate him.

Completion of the registration forms will highlight any health problems

or medication that may make it more difficult for the client to lose

weight. You will need him to answer some key questions:

1. Why do you want to lose weight?

2. How do you think life would be different if you were slimmer?

3. Is it portion sizes or specific foods that are the problem?

4. Does he have a spouse, children etc?

Make sure at this point you write down the exact language patterns that your client uses. You will need this.

Tell him you now want him to forget about anything he has ever been

told about diets. You want him to follow some simple rules. Explain

that that effort will reap rewards.

Hypnotically, your stomach has now been shrunk to the size of a golf ball. In

order to aid your weight control, it is very important that you follow the enclosed

guidance that will help with the psychological impact of your Gastric Band, and

also your past relationship with food, thus in turn aiding your weight loss.

Make a resolution now to take responsibility and follow these instructions to the letter, and success will be yours.

1. BUY SOMETHING NEW

One very powerful psychological technique that I will be using is called the law of

concentrated attention. Basically, it means that if there is something in life that

you really want, then behave in a way that you already have it – and you are

very likely to actually get it.

So…..go out at your earliest opportunity and purchase an item of clothing in the

size that you want to be. It has to be something brand new and NOT something

that you already have from your past that no longer fits. It does not have to be

anything expensive.

When you get it, hang it on the OUTSIDE of your wardrobe in a place where you

will see it often.

2. LISTEN TO THE CD

The CD utilises a multitude of the latest mind management techniques and is a

very important part of our work together. It is absolutely essential that you listen

to it at least once a day (more if you can) for the next 28 days. The CD will create

new neural pathways in your brain relating to your associations and attitudes

towards food. It will also reinforce the live sessions that you attend.

You will increase the effect tenfold if you listen to the CD using stereo

headphones, via an iPod or a CD walkman. You need to sit in a comfortable chair

or rest on your bed.

IMPORTANT – NEVER USE THE CD WHILST DRIVING OR OPERATING

MACHINERY.

3. EAT SLOWLY AND CONSCIOUSLY

Enjoy every mouthful of food, but slow your eating down; chew your food

thoroughly (approx 15-20 times a mouthful). Put your knife and fork down

between mouthfuls; put your sandwich down between mouthfuls.

Do not eat in front of the television or whilst reading as you will not be conscious

of what you are eating. Sit down and focus purely on the food in front of you.

4. STOP EATING AS SOON AS YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE

5. EAT ONLY THREE SMALL MEALS A DAY

Choose protein first, as you need 50-70 grammas of protein per day. As your

portion sizes will be dramatically reduce, it may be worth investing in some small

plates and bowls.

6. BUY AND TAKE SOME MULTIVITAMINS

To ensure you are still taking in all the vitamins you need.

7. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS AND CHOOSE ONLY LOW CALORIE LIQUIDS

8. EXERCISE.

It is a very important element of the virtual gastric band that you take some form

of exercise, for 30 minutes per day; this can be as simple as going for a walk. As

you will be eating less than your body needs to function, it has to make up the

difference by burning reserves. If you do not exercise daily, your body will

metabolize your unused muscle and you will lose muscle mass and strength.

Exercise will communicate to your body that you want to use your muscles and

force it to burn the fat instead. Walk, skip, and dance around the house - move!!

*If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels carefully. You may need to

adjust insulin or other diabetes medication.

Dealing with Head Hunger

Head hunger refers to a condition whereby you think you need food but your

body is not actually the one demanding energy. Something else is triggering you

to require food.

Here are SIX ways to deal with “head hunger”:

1. Take a sip of water.

2. Wait it out (about ten minutes).

3. Exercise – walk, stretch etc.

4. Concentrate on deep, slow breathing.

5. Tell yourself the feeling will pass.

6. Eat a little bit of something nutritious.

Give Yourself Support

It is important to recognize as you go through this program and the changes

demanded by the Virtual Gastric Band, that you will frequently have to be your

own support. To do so requires that you take some ownership of the process. In

other words, make this YOUR weight loss programme; take pride in what you are

doing and in revel in each goal achieved.

It may help if you write down why you want to lose weight, and your short-term

and long-term goals. Outline any strengths and weaknesses, and what you are

going to do about those weaknesses. For example, if you have a weakness for

chocolate, try not to allow any in the house!

And reward yourself for the small goals reached; why not treat yourself to a facial

for every half-stone you lose?!

Session 1

Before The Session

Explain how you’re going to do the hypnosis, how the client will feel;

explain that he may just feel like he is sat there with his eyes shut, but

that you are not there to prove that hypnosis exists - you are there to

bring about a change in him, and as long as that change comes

about, how it does so doesn’t really matter.

You’re going to get him to imagine a couple of scenarios. One of

those scenarios is an operation, but they will feel very comfortable,

and there will be no pain involved.

Script – Week 1

Following the pre-session talk, apply appropriate induction and deepener.

“I want you to use the power of your imagination. You were born with

a really powerful imagination, and I want you to imagine - or just get a

sense or a feeling - that you are walking into a hospital. This may be a hospital that you have been in before or just one that you want to

imagine. But just get this sense or feeling of walking into a hospital.

You are going to make your way through the hospital corridors to a

ward where they might carry out one of these gastric band operations,

to help you take control of your shape and size and be satisfied with

much smaller amounts of food.

As you make your way along the corridors, you notice in a side room a lady/man (use whichever gender your client is) who is just a little bit

older than you - not much, just a little bit older. This lady/man is

hooked up to tubes and machinery; they’re dying, dying from an

obesity-related illness that they thought would never happen to them…

(Use at this point all the clients own language patterns about their

particular eating habits, e.g. carrying on eating, even when they’re full, could never stop picking, etc, etc. The aim is to shock the

subconscious into realizing what is really happening with the

overeating)

…And this person’s family has been called to be with them, for the last few hours of their life…I wonder what they’re saying now? I

wonder who they’re not going to be around for. Who’s going to be on

that front row of their funeral (really go to town here - tears are

normal)?

©Sheila Granger 2010But this isn’t going to happen to you…this Gastric Band procedure

will help you become slimmer, fitter and healthier and you’re going to

be satisfied with much smaller amounts of food.

So, I want you to imagine something else for me…I want you to

imagine - or just get a sense or a feeling - that you’re sitting on a

hospital bed. You’re wearing one of those hospital gowns, and you’re

waiting for the surgeon and the anesthetist to come and talk to you about this gastric band procedure. But while you’re waiting, I want

you to consider what the most important reason is for you to be

slimmer…

(Use at this point the things your client told you at the assessment

stage e.g. wear the clothes they want to wear, look after their future

health, etc.)

Maybe you would have more energy; maybe you would be looking

after your future health, and I want you to consider what the most

important reason is to you for becoming slimmer…

The surgeon, the anesthetist come along to talk to you. They explain this procedure places a band around the top part of your stomach to

create a pouch, so that you feel fuller quicker, so that you can be

satisfied on much smaller amounts of food. It gives very safe, very

predictable results.

©Sheila Granger 2010You sign the consent form, agreeing to make those lifestyle changes

we talked about - three small meals, exercise and drinking lots of

fluids.

They come to take you down to the theatre. You can imagine that

journey down the hospital corridors, the sounds, the smells, but you feel very calm, very comfortable, knowing that this procedure will help

you become the person you choose to be, the shape, the size you

choose to be.

They take you into the anesthetic room, and give you the necessary

anesthetic, a nurse staying beside you as you drift…

You have just a vague awareness of being taken into the theatre, noticing the smell of this theatre and the sound of the monitors, the

surgeons talking…

(Use any smells and sounds here to enhance the experience if you

wish)

And I wonder what your stomach looks like from the inside? What

that band might look like, placed around the top part of your stomach,

creating a golf ball size pouch so that you feel fuller quicker; you can imagine what that looks like, your stomach, the size of a golf ball…

©Sheila Granger 2010But your body only needs those three small meals a day; you can be

very satisfied on just three small meals a day, no dieting, and no

depriving yourself, just those smaller amounts. You can find yourself eating consciously, slowly, enjoying every mouthful, but being very

aware of when you have had enough to eat. As soon as you feel comfortable you’ll stop eating, leave the food on the plate, put it on

the side or back in the fridge, but you won’t waste it on yourself; you

won’t use your tummy as a waste bin. You know when you eat when

you’re not hungry, or carry on eating when you’re already full; it’s just like using your stomach as a waste bin, a rubbish bin, a garbage can.

All that extra has got to go somewhere and it all just turns to fat and

fluid, sludge. You wouldn’t take your car to the petrol station and fill it full of petrol and, continue to pour the petrol in so that it all spills out

onto the garage forecourt…that’s what you’re doing to your body.

“Now that you are so completely relaxed, I can speak to that part of

you that knows all about you; that special part that’s been taking care

of you all these years.

With your permission, I would like to speak to that part of your

subconscious mind that controls your shape and size, and it is that

part that I am speaking to now.

For whatever reason in your past, your subconscious has allowed

you to put on weight. There was a good, valid and logical reason at

the time, but things have moved on, and food is no longer needed as

a coping strategy; continuing with old patterns of eating is damaging, and it’s time to make a change.

I want you to think of the most important benefit to you of becoming

your ideal, slimmest, healthiest self.

Maybe you will feel more confident; maybe you will feel good in your

clothes or maybe you will be happier with your health. I want you to

think what the most important benefit will be to you.

Now, for a moment, imagine that most important benefit so vividly that

you feel as though you already enjoy success.

Imagine for a moment that you are already at your ideal, healthiest, slimmest, fittest self; you love how you look and feel. Imagine feeling

so fit, so slim and so healthy and so full of energy.

You have begun a positive approach for gaining that benefit for

yourself. You have made a conscious decision to improve your health, to control your shape and size. Your subconscious can be

very aware of the band that has been placed around the top of your

stomach - that band is in just the right place for you.

Imagine now what your stomach looks like with that band in place.

That band has created just a small golf-ball size pouch for food. That

band is working for you right now. Restricting the food intake into your

stomach.

Picture in your mind now that golf- ball size pouch.

You can begin to find yourself getting fuller faster.

You can really start to feel the tightness of that band when you have

had enough to eat.

You can begin to find it difficult or uncomfortable to eat anything but those smaller portions.

You can be fully satisfied on those smaller amounts of food, eating

until you simply feel comfortable.

You take time to eat, take time to just focus on those three small

meals. You can take great pleasure and satisfaction in slowing you’re

eating down, taking the time to chew every mouthful, taking delight in tasting every mouthful, taking pleasure in the flavours that you’ve

never noticed before. And remaining very satisfied on those smaller

amounts of food.

You begin to find great pleasure in flavour, not quantity. And you will

find it incredibly easy to leave any excess food on the plate.

You no longer choose to use your body as a waste bin.

Your body only needs those three small meals each and every day,

just those three small meals.

It is safe to allow that band to work for you, it is safe to allow that band to restrict your food intake.

You can begin to find your body no longer needs any of those

You can begin to find new ways to deal with any head hunger and acknowledge that nothing tastes as good as thin tastes.

you eat consciously and rationally.

Over the next few weeks, to your pleasure, to your great satisfaction,

you will become aware that you’re size and shape is reducing,

reducing gradually, safely and naturally.

You begin to crave water, knowing that water is so good for you,

ridding your body of any toxins.

You can start to find ways of exercising daily, exercise that you totally

enjoy. You begin to look forward to that exercise, knowing that it is helping you become that healthier, slimmer, and fitter you...

You can start to feel renewed energy, renewed drive and

determination to set yourself goals. Goals for your own health, for your own shape and size. Knowing that you are in the driving seat,

you are responsible and you are in control of your eating habits; you

Session 2

Script - Week 2

On occasion, it is necessary to consider an aversion at this session, if

a particular food is causing a problem.

Consider inclusion of a full body relaxation on this session, then take

your client to the beach/countryside, somewhere that he finds most

relaxing (this isn’t strictly necessary); you can find out where before

you begin the session.

Apply appropriate induction and deepener.

“Now that you are so completely relaxed, I would like to speak to that part of (client’s name) that knows all about (client’s name) and, with

your permission, I would like to speak to that part that knows all about

your shape and size; the part that knows all about your eating habits,

and we can thank that part for co-operating. Already, in just one week (client’s name) is happy on much smaller amounts of food, is

becoming slimmer, and all this can continue.

But whilst you’re there, relaxing, I want you to think again of the most

important reason to you of becoming slimmer; maybe you would have more energy, maybe you would have more confidence, maybe you

would just be around for the people you love and care about (use the

reason for you to become slimmer.

And you know now it’s so easy to achieve…

All your body needs is those three small meals, just those smaller

amounts, listening to what your tummy tells you, and to stop eating when you’ve had enough. Think of a baby. A baby has the perfect

weight-control system. A baby cries when it’s hungry. You give the

baby a bottle and when it’s had enough, the baby stops feeding. It’s

just taking on board the right amount of food; the perfect weight- control system, and you only need to put into your body what it

actually needs.

You make a conscious decision, never to ignore that full signal. You can be very satisfied on much smaller amounts of food. Listen to your

tummy, take notice of that band. And those signals that you’ve had

enough to eat are going to become much more noticeable now, much

more powerful.

I wonder (client’s name) if you can get an image in your mind of your

tummy. You know what your tummy might look like; you can imagine

that band around the top part of your stomach, creating that small

pouch so that you feel fuller quicker. And even right now, you know how your tummy feels; you know whether your tummy feels slightly

hungry….comfortable…full; you know just how your tummy feels, and

you make a conscious decision never to ignore that full signal,

knowing that anything over that amount is just a waste and turns to

fat, fluid, sludge.

You know (client’s name), I guess we must all have these different

parts inside of us. There has always been this part of (client’s name)

who has wanted to become slimmer, who has wanted to wear the

clothes he wants to wear, but then in the past there has been this other part of (client’s name) who made (client’s name) maybe eat

more than he needed. I wonder what that part’s called? Just in your

own mind, I want you to recognize that part - give that part a name. I

wonder what that part’s called, the head-hunger part? So you can become consciously aware of the different parts of (client’s name),

you know which part to listen to now.

I want you to create that image in your mind, (client’s name) - of you wearing that new item of clothing that you bought, see it fitting you

well, fitting you comfortably; get that image in your mind - you

wearing that outfit. Make it a really bright, colourful image. Imagine for

a moment you are wearing that outfit right now. It fits you right now,

and feel all the feelings that come with that; feeling fantastic, and it’s all so easy to achieve. All your body needs are those three small

meals, just those smaller amounts; listen to your tummy, that band

working for you right now, recognizing those different parts of (client’s

name).

And, step by step, slowly but surely, you can really look forward to the

future; you’re in control of your eating habits; free; free now to

Generally by now eating habits are under control, but the client

perhaps needs to exercise more. If this is the case, you might like to

consider a motivation to exercise on the personalized CD.

Script - Week 3

Sometimes consider the mortuary on this session, if changes in the

client are slow.

“I want you to use the power of your imagination - or just get a sense or a feeling - that you’re walking into a cinema - it may be a cinema

that you’ve been into before, or just one that you want to imagine -

but just get this image, a sense, a feeling of walking into a cinema.

There is no one else around; it’s just you, and you feel so calm, so

relaxed; and I want you to imagine taking a seat on the front row of

this cinema; just take a seat on the front row. There’s just a big, blank

projection screen ahead of you, and by your side is a remote control,

the type that you’d use for your television, to turn up the volume, or the brightness of a picture.

And while you’re sitting there, in the front row of the cinema, I want

you to bring an image to mind of you, looking just how you want to look. Maybe it’s an image of you wearing that new item of clothing

that you bought; maybe it’s something else, an occasion that you’ve

got in mind, but just bring to mind that image of you, looking exactly

how you want to look.

You see, in a minute, I’m going to count from 1 to 3. When I get to

three, that image in your mind will appear on that cinema screen,

almost like a film. The life of (client’s name), but you looking just how

you want to look, wearing the clothes you want to wear, full of energy, full of life, the shape, the size you want to be.

So I’ll count to 3. When I get to three, that image will appear on that

screen. So here we go – 1...2...3…

Take a really good look at that picture, (client’s name); you, living your

life, slim, fit and healthy, wearing the clothes you want to wear,

looking fantastic.

Use that remote control by your side. Turn up the volume on that

picture, turn up the brightness. You see, (client’s name), in a minute

I’m going to count from 1 to 3 again, and this time you have a choice

to make. We always have choices in life. If you want, when I get to three, you can imagine jumping into that image, being a part of that

film, and feeling exactly how it will feel when you achieve that goal,

when you are slimmer, fitter and healthier, and all the feelings that will

staying in on the front row of that cinema, just be an observer,

wishing, wanting, but never doing anything about it. I wonder what you’re going to do, (client’s name)? Are you going to jump into that

image, and see how it feels? Or are you going to lose focus, give up,

sit back, wishing and wanting? So many people in their lives start off

with goals in mind, but then get distracted, lose focus, and never

achieve those goals. I wonder what you’re going to do? So here we go…1…2…3…

Jump in there. See how it will feel. You. Slim. Fit. Healthy. Doing all

the things you’d like to do at your perfect shape and size, feeling fantastic…and all those feelings will remain with you now…surely, but

safely and gradually, you are becoming that person; that future is

there and waiting for you…and it’s so easy to achieve, just those

three small meals, and being very satisfied on those three small

meals; listening to your tummy, imagining that band working for you

right now, reminding you when you have had enough to eat. You no

longer choose to use your body as a waste bin; you can now eat to live instead of living to eat. Food is no longer your drug of choice.

And you can let that image of that cinema just fade away from your

mind.

I want you to imagine something else for me. I want you to imagine -

or just get a sense or a feeling - that you’re going for a walk in a park.

It might be a park that you’ve been to before, or just one that you

want to imagine, but just get this sense, this feeling, of walking in this park. It’s a gorgeous day and the weather is just how you want it to

be - your favourite kind of day. And you feel so calm, so relaxed, just

wandering in this park. Just up ahead of you, there is a guy who’s

selling helium balloons, the type that you’d get in a fair. He’s standing

there with this big bunch of helium balloons. I want you to imagine going up to this guy and buying three of these balloons. Just buy

three of the balloons, and when you’ve got them, find somewhere to

sit down in the park. You can sit on a park bench or on the grass, but

just find somewhere to sit down, and while you’re sitting there, I’m going to go quiet for a while. I want you to consider anything that

might now prevent you from becoming the shape and size you want

to be. It might be something in the past that has held you back

before; it may be a craving for something, or eating for comfort, or stress. I want you to consider anything that has affected your ability to

control your own shape and size. It might be more than one thing.

You’ve got three balloons - I don’t know, but you do, so I’m just going

to go quiet for a while, while you consider what it’s maybe time to let go of…

And when you’ve thought of something, I want you to imagine writing

a word on each balloon that describes each thing. Just write a word on the balloons. And, when you’re ready to let go of those things, and

in your own time, you can release the balloons; just release the

balloons and watch them float away….getting higher and higher in

the sky, taking with them whatever those things are, just floating

satisfied on those three small meals, imagining that golf-ball size

pouch, your tummy, that band working for you

And you can look forward to that slimmer, fitter, healthier future, and

you feel fantastic.

Depending how your client is now doing, you might want to consider

revisiting the first session and ‘tightening’ the band. By now, there should be indication from your client that he is just eating those three

small meals without having to think about it, without any conscious

effort. This is indicative that there has been permanent change in his

behaviour.

“Now that you are so completely relaxed, I can talk to that part of

(client’s name) that knows all about (client’s name), that special part that’s been taking care of you all those years; that part that makes the

right decisions to keep you alive and keep you healthy. And I’m

talking to that part that knows all about your shape and size; that

knows all about your eating habits. And we can thank that part for co-operating; (client’s name) is becoming slimmer, gradually becoming

the size and shape he wants to be, easily, safely and naturally, and all

this will continue, so easily; just those three small meals, eating

slowly and consciously, enjoying food, listening to your tummy and

not eating just as soon as you feel comfortable. And the more you listen to your tummy, to that band, the more noticeable that “full”

feeling will become, just like a muscle that gets stronger the more it’s

And I want you again to consider the most important reason to you for

being slimmer. Maybe you would feel more confident, maybe you

would feel happier, more in control; maybe you would just be around

for the people who you love and care about, looking after your future health. I want you to think what that most important reason to you for

continuing to become slimmer…You can be so pleased with yourself,

so proud of your achievement; notice that you’re in control now; food

is no longer your “drug” of choice.

I want you to go forward in time, to that time in the future when you

are your ideal shape and size, maybe wearing that item of clothing

that you bought; maybe it’s a special occasion, and people around you are paying you compliments. Just enjoy for a moment those

feelings - you wearing those clothes, enjoying life, happy, and full of

energy.

As the days go by, you will notice how much more in control you are of your life, as you continue to become slimmer, fitter, healthier. You

can feel your sense of well-being growing daily.

I want you to imagine, (client’s name), that you are walking along a pathway. It may be somewhere you’ve been before, or just a place

you want to imagine, but just get this sense of walking along a

pathway; you come to a crossroads; one path takes you into that

Make those images really bright your mind; make them really clear images; turn up the colours in those images, turn up the sounds,

make them so bright and colourful, those images of you looking

exactly how you want to look.

You have positive steps towards becoming the person you choose to be, towards becoming your desired shape and size. You have made a

conscious decision to improve your health, to feel good about

yourself again, to focus only on positives and to take control of your

shape and size.

You make a conscious decision to only eat those three small meals

each and every day. Your body only needs those three meals each

and every day. You can feel very satisfied on those three, small healthy meals; you find it easy to leave any excess food on the plate;

you choose to push the plate away when you have had enough to

eat.

You make a conscious decision to eat those smaller amounts; a conscious decision to take responsibility for yourself, to take

responsibility for becoming your desired shape and size and to

become that slimmer, fitter, healthier you.

You can be fully satisfied on those smaller amounts of food, eating

only until you feel comfortable. You can make a conscious decision

now not to ignore that full signal.

exercise, the way you’ll be calmer, and happier, and your increased

attractiveness and trimness becomes almost a lucky side-effect of the

calming and mood-lifting activity you choose to do. And sometimes

your body will be like a dog that really lets its owner know when it has

a hunger for exercise. That’s it…Just get that pre-exercise focus and

feeling.

Now, imagine a whole exercise session in your mind over the next

few seconds, noticing how your mind and body work as one, in

attitude and energy; starting your chosen activity in your mind right now.

Good. And notice what it’s like in your mind to drift into the future

when regular, good healthy exercise is such an easy natural mood-lifting, confidence-boosting part of your life; what it’s like to walk down

the street with a well-exercised, toned, light, strong body; get a sense

of that now from the future.

And there’s a type of exercise that suits you, Sharon, be it an exercise class, or a stepper - it just feels right for you. And so good

after you’ve done it, noticing the development of muscular strength,

flexibililty, stamina.

Now, when you exercise, Sharon, it’s best to be totally absorbed in

the here-and-now, to go into a kind of trance and become one with

the activity, so that you forget time and space and feel a kind of

peace in movement. Just before you exercise, think about the way

you’re going to feel after you’ve exercised, how much better your

mood will be, how sitting down afterwards, and the depth of your

sleep, will both be more enjoyable.

Right now, you can enjoy a nice peaceful relaxation.

To increase motivation and energy when you exercise…That’s it -

notice how pleased your heart…and lungs and muscles...and skin and emotions...and intellect feel with this natural, enjoyable and

increased weekly and daily activity.

And you’re going to start finding that your mind, emotions and body really desire you to start to become active. Your body will become

stronger, faster, leaner, healthier and fitter, and you’re going to really

enjoy the space that your mind goes into as exercise becomes a

bigger part of your life.

You may find that your urge to exercise increases immediately or

gradually over the coming days and weeks. You can start to feel

renewed energy, renewed drive and determination to set yourself

goals; goals for your own fitness, for your own shape and size.
