2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Hoping for Harmony
Suppose that you are on a very long trip. On your map you locate your final destination--that is your ultimate goal--the place you really want to get to. But in order to get to that ultimate goal, you first need to reach all kinds of more immediate goals. You must take this highway, and then that highway. Stay in this town, and that city. Cross this mountain, and that valley. And so, even though you are always keeping your final goal in mind, at times you may have to pay more attention to your short term goal, so that you won't get lost along the way.
Last Sunday, we were reminded of our final goal. We heard that all nations would stream towards the mountain of the Lord, and that there would be final and ultimate peace.
Today we are reminded that we must be willing to change our minds and our behavior in order to prepare to more fully receive Christ into our lives. We have to set many short term goals as we travel on our journey. Repentance and hope are two short term routes that take us to our final goal of wholeness and salvation. If we are going to be about the work of repentance, then we will need to have hope inside of ourselves that things can be different--that we can be different.
Hope is one of the great themes of Advent and also one of the great themes of our own lives. First, hope for the future--the distant future when the kingdom of God will be fully established. But also, hope for the near future--the personal futures of our own lives.
One hope lives with the other hope, like a circle within a circle. But we must ask ourselves: Where does our hope for reconciliation lie? With whom do we need to be reconciled?

Ushers Needed
As retirement came prematurely to me, I could not imagine what I would do with all that time. I don’t worry anymore. As team leader of 3 ministries, I have had more blessings than I can count in volunteering at Holy Family. Please consider volunteering for the Welcoming Ministry. We are making a difference by welcoming our new parishioners. We provide a welcome tote bag full of information and token gifts for the family. We also host a new parishioner reception each year. If you would like to hear more about this terrific group, please call me at 748-0812. Thank you. Janet Barna

If you have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), the recently passed tax bill allows qualified individuals to transfer a gift directly from their IRA to 501c non profits, i.e., Church of the Holy Family, without incurring tax consequences.
Under this legislation, individuals age 70 1/2 and older can make a gift of up to $100,000 for the year 2013. This gift can qualify for the minimum distribution requirement also, and save on taxes.
Consult with your tax advisor and custodian of your IRA.

Like John the Baptist, every parent “prepares the way of the Lord” in the hearts of their children. Advent is a good time to ask; “Do I help my children to know Jesus? Do I hinder?”

• There will be a Human Development meeting on Monday, December 9 at 6 pm in Room 7. This brief meeting will be to discuss Haiti fundraising and the Human Development Christmas Project. All are welcome to attend.
• This is the last weekend to pick up tags for the CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE. All gifts may be returned at any time until noon on December 15. Please peel the backing off the original tags for these organizations and attach them to the outside of your gifts. Do not wrap any gifts except those for Mom’s House. These tags will state “Please wrap this gift.”
Gift cards for Catholic Charities are to be returned in a separate collection at Mass.
Blankets for Birthright - Continuing a tradition at Church of the Holy Family, we ask you to also provide receiving blankets for Birthright in memory of the deceased members of our Human Development Ministry. Such generosity provides a beautiful, living tribute showing continuing support for the choice of LIFE.
A special thank you to Kodey’s Tree Farm for donating the “Giving Tree” Christmas tree again this year. Kodey’s has donated our Giving Tree for over 15 years!
