Dear Parish Family; Depending on when this newsletter is mailed, or when you open and sit to read it,
you might be sitting down to the Last Supper, mourning the death on the cross,
waiting in breathless anticipation for the first Eucharist of Easter, or you may be
skipping happily through hardboiled egg dishes after the fact. I write you today
thinking about that breathless pause, the silence of Holy Saturday.
One of my favorite icons is the Harrowing of Hell, an icon for Holy
Saturday. In this icon, Jesus has broken open the heavy gates of hell, is trampling them, and is leading
a whole host of the dead into the resurrection of new life. For early Christians, the resurrection was no
solitary event. Jesus bursts forth from the tomb accompanied by everything that was previously
forgotten, abandoned, left to die in its sin. In his own death, he joins all that is dead with a promise of
liberation. There is no place, no human community, no individual heart so corrupt, deceitful, filled
with violence and hatred, that it can withstand the trampling feet of Jesus penetrating it with the life
and love of his death and resurrection.
At Christ Church, we have been spending 40 days in the wilderness of Lent in practice for our own
Harrowing of Hell this Holy Saturday. As best we are able, we have been looking into our lost, angry,
fearful, wounded, gifted, beautiful, creative selves that are sometimes hard to face honestly. On Holy
Saturday, we sit in silence, contemplating all that is false, broken and breaking, dead and deadening,
sin-drenched in our own heart and life. As we look honestly at the “selves of our self,” we know them
to be bound as if in the land of the dead, and we know Jesus has joined us there and is breaking us out
of prison. The irresistible force of resurrection is come among us.
The Spirit of the Risen Christ shines on you and sets you free. Accept the great gift, and pass it on.
Peace, Mary
The Beginning of the Good News Sunday Mornings at 9:00
Final Three Sessions: April 8th, April 15th, April 22nd
The Gospel of Mark is our Sunday Gospel companion through 2018. The “Beginning of the Good News” has deepened our understanding of this Gospel. Written around the year 70 CE during a turbulent time of persecution, Mark conveys a sense of urgency, chal-lenging Christians to remain steadfast in their radical commitment to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Mark was originally an oral gospel, told by traveling evangelists as they shared the good news they had received. Our final two sessions will help us experience the powerful storytelling that is Mark. We will listen to an actor tell the entire Gospel of Mark in these last sessions. Session X: He is Going Ahead of You April 8, 2018 Session XI: Mark’s Gospel – Onstage with Max McLean April 15, 2018 Session XII: Mark’s Gospel – Onstage with Max McLean April 22, 2018 Sunday morning at 9:00 on April 29th, May 13th, and May 20th will host special speakers from Christ Church outreach partners: Little Explorer’s Preschool, Hope House, and Thomas the Apostle Center.

A Deacon’s Journey A Report from the Deacons’ Symposium 2018 Early last month a small gathering of people met in Casper for a time of prayer, study, and reflection on the purpose and importance of the diaconate in the Diocese of Wyoming. Led by Fr. Benjamin Thomas, Director of Church Relations for the St. Francis Foundation we examined the past, present, and future of the diaconate in our diocese. We also met with Bishop Smylie to share concerns and celebrations we have experienced, as well as our hopes for the future. Fr. Benjamin’s message was sobering – statistical data regarding the decline in church attendance in mainline churches indicates that, if the trend continues, we may have only 23 Easters left in the life of the church. Fr. Benjamin also told us that somewhere, today, the last Episcopalian is waiting to be baptized. This is a frightening thought, and a definite wake-up call for all of us. We need to think about how we “do church.” How can we keep our rich tradition, yet still keep up with the times? We have wrestled with this for several years. Fr. Benjamin shared with us that people today fall into one of four categories: active church members, C&E Christians (Christmas & Easter), disheartened individuals who once came but no longer attend church, and the “unchurched” (those who don’t know anything about church). The last category makes up about 50% of today’s population. So, this may indicate that we need to consider our “unchurched” neighbors. We should ponder ways to share God’s message of love and salvation, knowing that they may never walk through our red doors. How do we help them to know Christ through us? We need to be the face of Christ in our workplaces, check-out lines, Little League games, schools, and wherever we may go. A new movement in the Diocese of Wyoming, called Fresh Expressions, is designed to help us as we tackle these issues. We will hear much more about this in the future. In the meantime, let us remember Jesus’ words from John 13:34-35. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” In peace, The Rev. Chris Galagan, Deacon
Food 4 Kids Are you interested in taking turns delivering
food to Cody Middle School? Our faithful Thursday evening drivers are looking for someone who could trade off this responsibility on a rotational basis. If you think this is something you think you’d like to do, please contact Kay Strike or Chris Galagan.
Blankets for Babies A recent delivery of 25 blankets to Park County Public Health nurses was the result of our March sewing day. We will set up shop again this summer in a spare room at church, and set our summer goal to meet or beat last year’s to-tal of 100 blankets in 2 months. We’ll need lots of help, so watch for dates and times to be announced in the next newsletter. Many, many thanks go to the devoted fundis* (foon-dees) who have shared their creative skills by sewing so many blankets this year. You make a difference. *fundi = the Swahili word for artisan, craftsman, seamstress, or tailor.
