Bright Futures Information

Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) – Class of 2016

The 2016-2017 Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) will be available online

beginning December 1st, 2015. The Office of Student Financial Assistance

(OSFA) website at www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org provides the FFAA to

students seeking state scholarship and grant awards (including Bright Futures)

for the 2016-2017 postsecondary academic year.

Applications can be made beginning December 1, 2015, for current seniors at

www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org .

Follow these steps:

Go to www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org. Select State Grants, Scholarships & Applications, and under Applicant Quick

Links, select Student Application to complete and submit an online application. Pay attention to program deadlines listed in the application conditions section,

on the application results screen, and on the application acknowledgement communication sent to the e-mail address provided by the student on his/her application.

The FFAA will provide a User ID and password to each applicant upon submitting the application via the Saved Results Page and in an e-mail communication.

Students may use User IDs and passwords to check: - The status of certification(s) prior to the program deadline(s). - The status of awards following the program deadlines. - Notifications from OSFA regarding award status.

This single application is used to evaluate the student for the following State of

Florida programs:

Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program – Deadline Graduation, 2016 José Martí Scholarship Challenge Grant – Deadline April 1, 2016 Rosewood Family Scholarship Program – Deadline April 1, 2016 Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans –

Deadline April 1, 2016

Page 8: Viking Voice - Okaloosa County School DistrictViking Voice Weekly Newsletter Fort Walton Beach High School March 4th, 2016 John Spolski, Principal 400 Hollywood Blvd, SW Fort Walton

**We have 328 seniors that still need to submit a Bright Futures application.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is not required to make

application for Bright Futures. BUT, it is strongly recommended that students &

parents complete this application if they will be applying for any federal financial

aid or aid from individual colleges. The FAFSA is required by most of the

financial aid offices at our colleges and universities. The FAFSA may be

completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov beginning January 1, 2016.

Transcripts for Bright Futures/FFAA will be evaluated three times yearly;

September, February, and July. The State collects the transcripts from our

database. The student does not have to “submit” these transcripts. **Whatever

is currently in our computer system on the date the State collects the

information is what Bright Futures will see – including test scores, GPA, and

community service hours.

Please encourage your student to use www.floridashines.org to review their

academic progress towards meeting the Bright Futures program eligibility

requirements.

Please ask students to review the minimum ACT/SAT test scores, GPA and

community service requirements for each of the possible Bright Futures

scholarships using the above website.

Fort Walton Beach High School junior, Summer Allen has been honored by President Barak Obama for her exemplary volunteer service. Below is the press release which accompanied the award and recognition. We are proud of you, Summer! Summer Allen, 11th grader, a student at Fort Walton Beach High School, has been honored for

her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant

amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by the

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama.

Fort Walton Beach High School nominated Summer Allen for national honors this fall in

recognition of her volunteer service.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in

partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognized

middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.

“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making

remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld,

chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing these students and placing a

spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also

contribute to their community.”

“Demonstrating civic responsibility through volunteerism is an important part of life,” said

NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti. “These honorees practice a lesson we hope all

young people, as well as adults, will emulate.” Prudential Spirit of Community Award

applications were distributed nationwide last September through middle level and high schools,

Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and

Hands On Network affiliates. These schools and officially-designated local organizations

nominated Local Honorees, whose applications were advanced for state-level judging. In

addition to granting President’s Volunteer Service Awards on behalf of President Barack Obama,

the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards selected State Honorees, Distinguished Finalists and

Certificate of Excellence recipients. Volunteer activities were judged on criteria including

personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth.

Oh My God, You Guys! It’s Legally Blonde The

Musical!

Contact: C. Whittaker (833-3300 ext. 1819 or

[email protected])

Tickets are now on sale for LEGALLY BLONDE, Fort Walton Beach High School’s

spring musical. Based on the popular 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon,

the musical is fun and quirky with highly catchy songs and energy-charged

choreography and involves over 100 students in the cast and crew. The musical

runs Thursday, April 14th through Saturday, April 16th, at 7:00pm, and Sunday,

April 17th, at 2:00pm, at the Ft. Walton Beach High School Theatre, 400

Hollywood Boulevard, SW, Ft. Walton Beach, FL.

Junior Sophia Metcalfe plays Elle Woods, the Malibu sorority sister who, after

being dumped by her aspiring politician boyfriend, Warner (Ben Tanner), for not

being “serious” enough, uses her underestimated intelligence to get into

Harvard Law School to impress him. Far from her comfort zone, Elle is suddenly

a misfit, who, with the help of new friends Emmett (Grant Oberle), a teaching

assistant with a working class background, and Paulette (Sydney Johnson-

Bethea), a down-on-her-luck hairdresser, finds her true calling in life (hint: It’s

not Warner). Also guiding her is a “Greek chorus” made up of her UCLA sorority

sisters, who only she (and later Paulette) can see. Her biggest foils are Harvard

elite mean girl Vivienne (Sydney Whittaker), who also happens to be Warner’s

Jackie O-like girlfriend, and the agenda-driven Professor Callahan (Jake Eiche).

During her journey to find love, Elle discovers that disappointment is only

opportunity in disguise, and proves that being true to yourself never goes out of

Page 15: Viking Voice - Okaloosa County School DistrictViking Voice Weekly Newsletter Fort Walton Beach High School March 4th, 2016 John Spolski, Principal 400 Hollywood Blvd, SW Fort Walton

style. This high-energy pop musical's fun and catchy score features music and

lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and a hysterical book by Heather

Hach.

Pre-sale tickets are available in the school office and from cast members for

$10. Tickets will also be sold at the door but will be $15. The performance is

rated PG-13 for sexual innuendo, so parental discretion is advised.

The Sunday, April 17 matinee is “Going to the Dogs” day, and anyone who brings

a bag of dog food (of at least 3.5 pounds) to be donated to local shelters and

rescues will get $5.00 off the admission price. Follow us on Twitter:
