Introduction

To include basic information about the project and its outcomes, and aims for reporting period

Wash Arts will be working with pupils from Dallimore and Ladywood Schools on the initial development of the Big Kirk Hallam Passport. The aim of the Passport Project is to offer a range of exciting activities that will expand the horizons of young people growing up in Kirk Hallam and be stamped and recorded in an individual 'passport'. If successful, this will span over the next 10 years of BKH project and will capture

children from year 3 through eventually to secondary school. We hope that the Passport will eventually become a permanent feature of the life of every local child.

The passport will take the form of an individual passport style booklet along with a log book for each child and will be designed in collaboration with children from the schools.

The children will also take part in an annual celebratory 'passport check.'

The specific aims for this period were: Approval of the passport and printing and design, approval and printing of

the portfolio.

Organisation of stamp for the passport

A timetable of activities to Sept 2015 to be drawn up

Launching of the passport at school through assembly/parents evening/school newsletter/press release (in association with the Plan Coordinator) / publicity through the News-hub and an article in the next Newsletter.

A copy of passport and folder to be presented to each child

Activities undertaken during reporting period

To link in with outcomes identified within SLA and to include any issues carried over from previous report, activities carried out, base line monitoring. Please attach photographs, quotes, good news stories etc

This report period has concentrated on the finalisation of the development of the design of the passport. Kate Smith, a local award winning designer has used this time to work with the images that the children drew to depict different aspects of the BIG ideas, for example the BIG mess, BIG get together and to develop these into the final booklet.

Passport Front Cover Inside showing BIG ideas

Kate worked with a group of children from Ladywood and Dallimore Primary schools who have had all their drawings included in the passport and each page includes the name of the child who created the artwork for it.

Each child also designed their own BIG Kirk Hallam Passport ‘logo’ to be used on the front of the passport. Nineteen of these were presented to the BKH steering Group at the February meeting so they could select the most appropriate one. The final logo was a combination of the work of two pupils.

The designer has completed all the design work on the passport and sent it to George and Gagg printers for final adjustments ready to go to print.

We had approval from the Steering Group to print 1000 copies rather than 500 as this was more cost effective and means that pupils entering year 3 during the next few years will receive their passport without delay.

We have continued our discussion with the schools regarding the programme of activities and we have arranged with them for a picnic event to happen Thursday 4th and Friday 5th June as a way of launching the project. Wash Arts has met and liaised with local artists to develop possible creative activities for the children to take part in during the picnic day(s). The two artists selected were Dawn Turner from Kirk Hallam and Rachel Carter from Stapleford. Both have associations with the area and the schools.

The artists worked together to present us with a selection of possible activities for the days. We decided the following idea would perfectly represent the ‘voyage’ the children would going on whilst following their passport and the ‘treasure’ they would uncover on their journey! You can see these ideas will hit many of the outcomes for the children – so this will be a good start for stamps in their passport!

BIG KIRK HALLAM PASSPORT - LAUNCH EVENT PLANActivities throughout the day, leading to the creation of a temporary installation.

"Make Your Own Fossils"Each child brings in a small object or two from home, or a selection, to be cast. They fill small containers with sand, into which the items are pressed, to create moulds.

Plaster is mixed by the artist (to avoid any health & safety issues with materials handling) to be poured into the sand-moulds

After about 20 minutes (during which time a further activity will be happening), the plaster is set enough to be removed from the mould. As it comes it, it appears is just a bed of sand, but when water is poured over, it reveals the cast of the original objects, with the sand being impregnated into the surface of the plaster, thus looking like fossils.

Later in the day, these newly washed fossil pieces can be brushed to reveal more detail, similar to archaeologist at a dig.

"Weaver Birds"Frames, made from steel wire (Kirk Hallam was mainly borne out of the need for housing at Stanton & Staveley Steel & Ironworks) will be pre-made in a bird shape.

Carrier bags will be cut into strips/ribbons for weaving in and out of the wire frames, using a simple figure of eight weave, creating colourful, lightweight birds.

The children could be asked to bring carrier bags from home before the event, encouraging recycling.

Later in the day, the birds will be used as part of the final installation. They will appear as a flock, representing children as they grow and spread their wings. These two activities would be run during the morning, either on a rotational basis with each artist, or consecutively. A third activity will also be run, which is flexible and can be adjusted to allow for anytime constraints.(This would involve decorating strips of pre-scored cardboard which will subsequently be folded to house shapes which will enclose the fossil blocks.)

During the afternoon, the artists and the children will create the installation from the previously made birds and housed fossils.

A wooden base will be created from the design template of "Mapping Kirk Hallam" installed in the sixth form building of KHCA, with the roads carved into the wood. It will be approximately 1.2mtr square. This would connect the Passport project to the academy school

Four poles would come up from each corner to hold a frame (at a child friendly height) which can be used for stringing materials across.

The wire birds will be hung from the top frame; they will have colour and movement as they dance in the breeze. The children will place the cardboard houses/fossil blocks on the Kirk Hallam map base to represent the community.

The installation frame will be designed so that it can be taken apart and re-assembled elsewhere so that it could be used for several stages of the BIG Passport projects. It could also be used in a final exhibition, or as a display permanent artwork (a collage perhaps) or display-board, one in each in each school. It will certainly be useable on more than one occasion.

The school were to have a planning meeting with staff to discuss what activities they wish to happen this year but this has been postponed until after the picnic.

Impact and difference the project has made

How has the project been successful? What has been its impact in relation to the SLA outcomes and more widely in Kirk Hallam?

The consultation and design process has been very successful with some fantastic drawings and logo designs by the children and designer. This is a very exciting moment and the impact will be evident at the picnic in June.

Timescales

Is project on track? If not what are you planning to do to address the issues?

We have completed the first 2 of the 9 outcomes outlined in the Description of Service in our SLA. We confidently expect to have completed the remaining 7 outcomes by the end of the next reporting period.

There has been some delay as our aim was to have the passport printed and launched during this period and a full activity programme in place. This was mainly due to some necessary adjustments to the design including requiring children to redraw some images. This took some time to approve, but we were keen to have things as polished as possible as this is intended as a long-term project. The schools have also been experiencing a very busy time. We are therefore waiting for the outcome of staff meetings with the Head teacher of both schools to propose activity ideas – this issue will be a priority. A meeting will be set up and Wash Arts will make our suggestions for activities to be done in the next reporting period.

We do now have a launch date (the picnic) with all activities decided and children will be able to complete their first activities on the day.
