EvaporationOn a warm, __________________ day, water in a glass of water seems to slowly disappear. This is because the energy from the sun is _______________ the water up and turning the liquid water into water ______________. This process is called ___________________. When the water ________________, it becomes an invisible gas in the _____________________. Evaporation takes places all over the earth, but especially in the ________________ and ________________ where there is lots of water.

CondensationAs the water vapor rises, it cools off and ______________________ into water _________________. If the water vapor becomes extremely cold, it will form ice ________________ instead of water droplets. As the water droplets or ice crystals grow bigger and more numerous, they form ___________________.

PrecipitationIf water droplets or ice crystals become too _______________, they can’t stay in the air. They _________________. Water droplets precipitate as ________________ and ice crystals precipitate as _________________. Sometimes, the rain freezes before it hits the earth and precipitates as _________________.

RunoffThis precipitation gathers into ________________ and _________________ that flow

down to the lakes and oceans. This is called __________________. Not all of the water makes it back to the oceans and lakes right away. Some of it is used by animals and ________________. Some is frozen into ___________________. Eventually, the animals and plants breathe the water out and the glaciers melt, releasing the water back into the water _______________.

Debbie smacked her lips as she chewed down on the last bit of her strawberry frosting cupcake. Off in the distance, she heard someone calling for her, so she went running.

“What is it?” She called out.“It’s your turn to race!” Her friend Wendy told her. “Where

have you been and what is that on your face?”“It’s frosting.” Debbie replied. She wiped her face on her

sleeve and ran across the grass to the starting line. The other five racers grinned at her. She smiled back. She

figured she must still have frosting on her face somewhere.“ON YOUR MARKS!” The official shouted, raising the starting gun. Everyone got

down in their starting poses low to the ground.“SET!” All six runners lifted up off the ground.“GO!” The gun cracked. All the runners took off from their starting blocks.Debbie wasn’t sure what it was, but her first few steps put her out in front of the

others. She kept her lead the whole way to the finish line. When she crossed the finish line in first place, she looked over at Wendy.

Wendy’s eyes were big and round. “Wow! Where did that come from?”Debbie shook her head and laughed. “I’m not sure. Maybe it was cupcake power?”Wendy frowned. “Cupcake power? Those things are not good for you. It should

slow you down.”“I think they’re my lucky charm. I’m going to eat one before the next race, too.”

Debbie announced.“Go ahead and try.”Debbie and Wendy went off to buy another cupcake. In fact, she bought two.

Debbie ate both. “One made me fast. Two should make me super fast!”“Aren’t you full?”“I fell really full.” Debbie groaned as she walked to the starting line for her next race. This time, when the race started, Debbie came off the starting block slow. She

came in last place. When she finished, she was holding her side, because she had a cramp.

“So much for cupcake power.” Wendy said sadly.“I think they have the power to help, or the power to hurt.” She rubbed her side. She was done with her races for the day.

We are healthy, happy, strong and intelligent.Scott was so excited to be going on the

summer day camp trip to the woods. His group was going to fish, float on a raft, and spend two nights sleeping in a tent. All the things boys his age love to do and no little sister to bother him.

After arriving at camp, some of the boys wanted to go with Mr. Allen fishing, and some of the boys went on a raft with Mr. Willard. Scott said he was going fishing. “All of you that are going fishing stay with me,” said Mr. Allen. Tony, Joey, Mike, and Scott were the ones that chose fishing. Larry, Eddie, and Jason wantedto go on the raft. They left with Mr. Willard. The boys gathered up their fishing poles and baskets to hold the fish they were sure they were going to catch. They started down the trail toward the lake. Lake Amber was about a half mile down the trail. The boys arrived at the lake quickly; however when they got there, Scott was not with them. “Where’s Scott?” Mr. Allen asked the other boys. “He was right behind me,” said Tony. “We did move ahead for a little while,” said Joey. Mr. Allen became very worried and starting shouting, “Scott, Scott!” No answer. Scott suddenly found himself lost on the trail leading to Lake Amber. I only looked away for a minute, he thought to himself. How could I be lost? Scott decided to turn around and go back the way he came. He remembered the direction to the lake was south. He also remembered he had his compass from his last Boy Scout trip in his pocket. He took out his compass and realized he had been going north. Scott started down the trail in the opposite direction. As he did, he yelled, “Mr. Allen, Joey, Mike.” Mike thought he heard someone yelling his name and tried to listen closely. Mr. Allen heard it too. Everyone stayed together and headed to where they heard the voice calling to them. All of a sudden, Scott jumped out from behind a tree and said, “I am so glad to see you guys!” “What happened?” asked the boys and Mr. Allen. “I was looking at the trees.” “I must have made a wrong turn,” said Scott. “When I realized what happened, you were gone.” “Well, we’re here now,” said Mr. Allen. “Let’s make sure we stay together.” “Okay,” the boys said and headed back to the lake to catch some fish for dinner.
