Electoral College Make-Up Since you will miss the major portions of the EC project we will be working on next week, the following assignment is for make-up purposes. It consists of three parts and you must complete all three parts. I. Candidate Nomination Platform (25 pts.) A. Choose one of the two major parties (Republican; Democrat) or an Independent party B. Research their party platform (can be found on their websites) C. You are a candidate running for president in the party you have chosen. Submit 500 words on your stand on current issues. You should consider, but are not limited to, the following topics: 1. Economy 2. Health Care 3. Jobs 4. Immigration 5. Foreign policy 6. Military and Homeland Security 7. Education 8. Crime II. You will represent two states of your choosing and create a banner representing those states. (50 pts.) Banners (one for each state) should contain the following information: A. 5 illustrations that represent aspects of the state (Iowa might have an illustration of corn, for example) B. The state name should be prominently displayed, along with the capitol C. Include the number of electoral college votes for the state D. A representation of the state flag E. 6. REHEARSED RESPONSES: Examples of candidates’ use of prepared phrases or retorts that seem spontaneous. Were they used effectively or not?

7. CUTAWAYS: Examples of non-verbal expressions, gesturing, audience reactions seen during debate. Did these images help or hurt the candidates?

8. Final Analysis – How successful do you think each candidate was? Who do you think “won” the debate? Explain completely.
