How to access phonic bug for reading at home

NOTE: Google chrome supports ‘phonic bug’ and is more likely to run smoothly than internet explorer.

To start using ‘phonic bug’ enter the web address as follows:

www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/home

You can also search ‘active learn primary’ in google but when clicking the link you must make sure that the address that appears is the same as the one above and that it does not contain the word ‘staging’ anywhere in the web address.

You should be faced with a page that looks like this:

To log in you will need to enter your child’s username and password in the boxes provided.

Username: your child’s first name plus the first letter of their surname – all lower case. E.g John Smith would be – johns

Password: class1 or class2 all lower case – no spaces – your child’s class

The school code: hejs.

Once you have logged in you will be faced with this screen.

The ‘My home’ tab allows your child to choose which ‘world’ they see when they log in, this can be changed at any time. Each ‘world’ has different activities and things to save up for. Children can earn coins (which are displayed in the treasure chest) by reading a book and completing the activity linked to it.

The ‘My rewards’ tab allows you to use the coins that you earn to play games, decorate a tree house or create stickers. By clicking on the door to each section you will be let in and can see items to purchase (using your coins) and their cost. Coins are saved in your treasure chest for each time you enter the site, as are books so you do not have to read a whole book in one go.

To read a book

Click the ‘My stuff’ tab to see the books that have been allocated for the week (I will add books to your child’s account based on what they have been learning in phonics that week).

To read a book simple click on it and start off by looking at the inside cover. There is a green ‘phonic bug’ to click on to hear the sounds if you or your child are unsure of their pronunciation. To turn the page click the ‘next’ arrow.

Once your child has read the book use the back cover to give you ideas for further activities and comprehension questions to ask your child (see right hand page below). In order for the book to show up as read on the system your child must also complete an activity which is found by clicking the final green ‘phonic bug’ (see the left hand page below). The bug always appears on the last page of the book.

To close a book click the red X at the bottom right of the page. Remember a whole book does not need to be read at once. It will stay in the ‘My stuff’ section until it has been read and the final ‘bug’ activity has been completed in which case it will move to the ‘library’ tab as a record of what has been read.

I hope this guide makes access easy for you but if you do have any questions please contact myself (Mrs Wallace) or Mrs Roberts.
