Almost all problems of age level performance in primary school read-aloud skills and spelling skills can be

linked very directly to the student’s lack of basic phonic skills.

Finely graded phonic drills, of the type in this program, will forever remain an essential part of the effective

teaching of older age students to spell and read accurately. Accurate spelling and reading demand that children

perceive as well as recall literally every letter in every word. Additionally, no student will ever be able to write

any word exactly if he hasn’t actually read the word exactly in the first place. So quality reading skill too, will

forever involve the accurate perception of every letter.

All quality performance requires the necessary discipline to be exact in perception and recall (i.e. in their

‘reading’ and ‘spelling’) of English words. Near enough spelling skills will simply never be good enough on most

job application forms.

Competent correction of phonic skills and spelling problems with older children must be preceded by competent

P R O G R E S S IV E E V A L U A T I O N

Progressive evaluation is a feature that clearly follows the completion of every worksheet. Should the teacher

desire, each worksheet can be completed in up to three main ways: The words on the worksheet can be merely

completed on the page or they can be written in full in a separate book. Finally they can be ‘drilled’ in the old

fashioned “spelling test” way. A mix of the three methods, as determined by the teacher, is advised for most ‘older

age’ failing students who urgently need to catch up on the phonic skills that they should have learned in the earlier

years of the primary school. Accurate results on the spelling test are the clearest sign of competence. See

worksheets following.

An alternative program is recommended for those relatively rare older age students who might still find the work

in this program too difficult even in the early stages.

T H R E E P H O N I C D R I L L L E V E L S : T H R E E B O O K S

There are three distinctively different levels of phonic drills covered by the 167 downloadable PHONIC DRILL

worksheets in this program. These levels are described as follows:

PHONIC DRILLS: LEVEL A The graded word lists in this level range from words like pat, spat, sprat and splat

to words like squirrel, elastic and splendid. There are 51 worksheets containing 282 short lists involving some

1,300 different words. The words all contain the “short” vowel sounds that can be heard at the beginning of ant

egg ink opt and up. This group of English phonic structures is usually mastered by children who are performing

comfortably at an 8.5 year old level of word recognition skills.

PHONIC DRILLS: LEVEL B The words mainly contain English “long” vowel sounds that be heard at the

beginning of acorn even icon oval union oops out and oil. Many different letter combinations and sounding out

rules are involved. There are 54 worksheets containing 272 short lists involving some 1,500 different words. This

group of structures is usually mastered by children who are performing comfortably at a 10.5 year old level of

word recognition skills.

PHONIC DRILLS: LEVEL C The words in the later worksheets are mainly of the polysyllabic and phonically

complex type whereas the words in the earlier worksheets contain mainly words where the sounds of the letters

are modified by the letters ‘R’ , ‘W’ and ‘QU’. There are 62 worksheets containing 275 short lists involving some

1,650 different words. This group of structures is usually mastered by students who are performing comfortably at

a 13.5 year old level of word recognition skills.
