The Score HD is a specialty sports channel that provides sports news, highlights, information and analysis programming along with live event sports coverage. Knowledge contracted Applied Electronics to assist in the building of an end-to-end digital SD solution into their existing facility. Applied Electronics provided consultation, design and supply of the new tapeless digital system comprised of a monitor wall, master control, branding system, automation, and archive storage, which can all accommodate a future upgrade to HD. The new master control system incorporates Miranda’s Densité series modular products for signal processing and distribution, Kaleido-X (7RU/4RU) fully expandable, multi-image display system with integral router, PresStation master control switching and branding panel, Imagestore SD master control and brand processor, Vertigo X graphics manager, Xmedia Suite’s Xstudio template authoring system for creating and previewing television graphics, and iControl monitor and alarm. Also included is a Sundance Titan automation system and a Sun StorageTek SL500 modular library system for archiving. HD studio, production control room, audio, and central equipment room (CER) are on the main floor while on the third floor are edit suites, the main CER and master control. The main production and audio control room features a Studer Vista 5 digital audio mixer, 360 Systems DR600 instant replay sound file player, Sharp LCD displays, and a Crestron control system with touch panel. The system also includes a Tandberg ASI encoder, Extron HD router, Nugget HD player, Wohler digital audio monitors, Marshall 5.6 rackmount monitors, and AVP patch fields. Archiving is done with a Front Porch Digital DIVA system and on-air automation is created with an Avid Sundance Titan system. The edit suites each have two Thomson Grass Valley Aurora editors and two recording areas for reporters. The heart of the system are the numerous Thomson Grass Valley K2 video servers, Aurora Edits, Production SAN edit suites, and a Trinix video router, which all help to improve workflow. The Score can now ingest, edit and broadcast up to 22 HD feeds at a time, providing content for television, radio, online and mobile applications. SMPTE @ The Score The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE) Toronto Chapter held their February meeting at The Score’s new street-front HD studio facility. The meeting commenced with presentations and then small groups were taken on tours of The Score’s new HD facility. Catered food was generously provided by Thomson Grass Valley. This meeting had the best attendance of all the SMPTE events in the last 2 years and included members from all of the major networks and broadcasters in the Greater Toronto Area.

John Leermakers Vice President of FinancePaul Stechly, President, is pleased to announce the promotion of John Leermakers to Vice President of Finance. John graduated with an Honours Business Administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and obtained his CMA Designation in 1994. He held the role of Assistant Controller at NSK Bearing and Controller at Computron Software before joining AEL in 1999 as Controller to oversee the finance department.

As V.P. of Finance, John will continue to manage the finance department as well as the ERP “SYACC” system and corporate administration. John reached his 10-year milestone with AEL on January 4, 2009.

John and wife of 16 years, Pam, have 3 children, Courtney (13), Kyle (11) and Cameron (9), and all enjoy camping, curling and other sports activities. In fact, John won the GTA Curling Championship in 2008.

Kim O’Grady 20 Years with AELKim studied in a business program at Sheridan college and worked for companies in the electric and automotive industries. Prior to joining AEL, Kim worked for Dynatec, AEL’s sister company that specialized in medical supplies, as the Shipper/Receiver, and in 1988, Kim transferred to AEL to run its head office warehouse. As Warehouse Manager, Kim is responsible for shipping, receiving and categorizing all products in the Mississauga office and maintaining the warehouse inventory. Kim has done a fantastic job in keeping everything well-organized. Thank you for the dedication, Kim!

Kim and wife of 27 years, Penny, have 3 children, Summer, Kyle and Amber, two of whom have worked at AEL as outstanding summer students.

Michel Bédard 13 Years with AELMichel joined AEL as a Sales Representative in 1995 and became Manager for Québec and Eastern Canada in 1999. Michel had prior broadcast experience with TQS Television Quatre Saisons as Maintenance Supervisor and Tele-Quebec (formerly Radio Québec) as a Technical Instructor, Technical Producer and Maintenance Supervisor.

With a technical background from the Institute de Technologie de Montreal in Electronics and Audio Visual, Michel enjoys the challenges which are constantly presented with new technology in our industry. He is very good at explaining new technology to his clients and colleagues and is highly regarded in the industry.

Michel and wife, Chantel, have 3 sons and in their spare time, they enjoy camping, cross country skiing and travelling.

Trevor Joice – 11 Years with AELTrevor’s career in broadcast began 40 years ago when he worked at a radio station in Cobourg after studying Electronics in college. For many years, he was the Director of Engineering at CHIN RADIO/TV and also worked at CJRT-FM in Toronto. Trevor joined AEL’s broadcast sales team in 1998 as a Broadcast Technologist and shares his expertise in intercom, audio and RF systems. He is recognized by many industry peers for his engineering and leadership accomplishments and was honoured with CCBE’s Engineer of the Year Award in 1991 and CCBE’s Ambassador Award in 2008.

Trevor is a beekeeper in his spare time, managing 6 hives with 300,000 bees that produce incredibly flavourful honey.

Trevor and wife, Jean, have two sons, and are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first grandchild in June. Congratulations, Trevor!

Nick Eriksen A/V Installations Technician, CalgaryOriginally from Strathmore, Alberta, Nick graduated from the Broadcast Technologies program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and worked for the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show and then in rentals & systems integration division for a local AV company in Calgary. Enjoying building and cabling equipment racks, Nick joined AEL as an Audio Visual Technician, performing systems installations and occasionally attending to service calls. Nick takes pride in clean and professional installation work and is a great addition to the AEL family in Calgary.

Nick Johnson A/V Installations Technician, Toronto Nick studied Computer Hardware and Electronics at Lambeth College in the U.K. before graduating from Algonquin College in Canada with a Precision Electronic Assembly Certificate. With over 10 years of hands-on technical experience, Nick joined AEL’s Audio Visual Systems Division as an Installations Technician. With a wide range of installation, service and project coordination skills, he is a welcomed addition to the Mississauga A/V team.

Dave McGinn 7 Years with AELDave joined AEL in 2002 as a Sales Consultant specializing in News products and then became a full time employee in 2004 as a Broadcast Sales Representative.

Dave’s professional background includes 24 years in television news, including 7 and 14-year stints at CJOH Ottawa and 2 years at CKWS Kingston. Dave was also Station Manager at APTN overseeing the build at their new Winnipeg Broadcast Centre in 1999-2000.

Dave and wife, Jan, have two daughters and recently welcomed a grand-daughter, making Dave a grandpa for the first time. Congratulations, Dave!

Sim Video 2009 Technology Open HouseOn January 29th, Sim Video hosted its fourth annual Technology Open House in Toronto and experienced an unprecedented turnout of industry professionals eager to take in the latest in digital cinematography and high definition production tools. Applied Electronics co-sponsored the event and showcased AJA Video’s FS1 serial digital video interface and converter, MultiDyne’s FTX1500TX transmitter, FTX1500RX receiver and LiGHTBoX® portable fibre kit, Tektronix’s WFM5000 HD/SD-SDI portable waveform monitor, and Panasonic’s BT-LH1710 17” LCD multi-format monitor. The event was, as usual, a great success.

Recently, The Score underwent a massive system upgrade to its facility in Toronto and Matthew Payne, Director of Broadcast Operations, contracted Applied Electronics to do a total rebuild of their broadcast system to full HD, including its

SMPTE @ The Score The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE) Toronto Chapter held their February meeting at The Score’s new street-front HD studio facility. The meeting commenced with presentations and then small groups were taken on tours of The Score’s new HD facility. Catered food was generously provided by Thomson Grass Valley. This meeting had the best attendance of all the SMPTE events in the last 2 years and included members from all of the major networks and broadcasters in the Greater Toronto Area.

John Leermakers Vice President of FinancePaul Stechly, President, is pleased to announce the promotion of John Leermakers to Vice President of Finance. John graduated with an Honours Business Administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and obtained his CMA Designation in 1994. He held the role of Assistant Controller at NSK Bearing and Controller at Computron Software before joining AEL in 1999 as Controller to oversee the finance department.

As V.P. of Finance, John will continue to manage the finance department as well as the ERP “SYACC” system and corporate administration. John reached his 10-year milestone with AEL on January 4, 2009.

John and wife of 16 years, Pam, have 3 children, Courtney (13), Kyle (11) and Cameron (9), and all enjoy camping, curling and other sports activities. In fact, John won the GTA Curling Championship in 2008.

Kim O’Grady 20 Years with AELKim studied in a business program at Sheridan college and worked for companies in the electric and automotive industries. Prior to joining AEL, Kim worked for Dynatec, AEL’s sister company that specialized in medical supplies, as the Shipper/Receiver, and in 1988, Kim transferred to AEL to run its head office warehouse. As Warehouse Manager, Kim is responsible for shipping, receiving and categorizing all products in the Mississauga office and maintaining the warehouse inventory. Kim has done a fantastic job in keeping everything well-organized. Thank you for the dedication, Kim!

Kim and wife of 27 years, Penny, have 3 children, Summer, Kyle and Amber, two of whom have worked at AEL as outstanding summer students.

Michel Bédard 13 Years with AELMichel joined AEL as a Sales Representative in 1995 and became Manager for Québec and Eastern Canada in 1999. Michel had prior broadcast experience with TQS Television Quatre Saisons as Maintenance Supervisor and Tele-Quebec (formerly Radio Québec) as a Technical Instructor, Technical Producer and Maintenance Supervisor.

With a technical background from the Institute de Technologie de Montreal in Electronics and Audio Visual, Michel enjoys the challenges which are constantly presented with new technology in our industry. He is very good at explaining new technology to his clients and colleagues and is highly regarded in the industry.

Michel and wife, Chantel, have 3 sons and in their spare time, they enjoy camping, cross country skiing and travelling.

Trevor Joice – 11 Years with AELTrevor’s career in broadcast began 40 years ago when he worked at a radio station in Cobourg after studying Electronics in college. For many years, he was the Director of Engineering at CHIN RADIO/TV and also worked at CJRT-FM in Toronto. Trevor joined AEL’s broadcast sales team in 1998 as a Broadcast Technologist and shares his expertise in intercom, audio and RF systems. He is recognized by many industry peers for his engineering and leadership accomplishments and was honoured with CCBE’s Engineer of the Year Award in 1991 and CCBE’s Ambassador Award in 2008.

Trevor is a beekeeper in his spare time, managing 6 hives with 300,000 bees that produce incredibly flavourful honey.

Trevor and wife, Jean, have two sons, and are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first grandchild in June. Congratulations, Trevor!

Nick Eriksen A/V Installations Technician, CalgaryOriginally from Strathmore, Alberta, Nick graduated from the Broadcast Technologies program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and worked for the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show and then in rentals & systems integration division for a local AV company in Calgary. Enjoying building and cabling equipment racks, Nick joined AEL as an Audio Visual Technician, performing systems installations and occasionally attending to service calls. Nick takes pride in clean and professional installation work and is a great addition to the AEL family in Calgary.

Nick Johnson A/V Installations Technician, Toronto Nick studied Computer Hardware and Electronics at Lambeth College in the U.K. before graduating from Algonquin College in Canada with a Precision Electronic Assembly Certificate. With over 10 years of hands-on technical experience, Nick joined AEL’s Audio Visual Systems Division as an Installations Technician. With a wide range of installation, service and project coordination skills, he is a welcomed addition to the Mississauga A/V team.

Knowledge is British Columbia’s public Educational Media Service providing high quality, commercial-free documentaries and arts & culture programming. Knowledge contracted Applied Electronics to assist in the building of an end-to-end digital SD solution into their existing facility. Applied Electronics provided consultation, design and supply of the new tapeless digital system comprised of a monitor wall, master control, branding system, automation, and archive storage, which can all accommodate a future upgrade to HD.

The new master control system incorporates Miranda’s Densité series modular products for signal processing and distribution, Kaleido-X (7RU/4RU) fully expandable, multi-image display system with integral router, PresStation master control switching and branding panel, Imagestore SD master control and brand processor, Vertigo X graphics manager, Xmedia Suite’s Xstudio template authoring system for creating and previewing television graphics, and iControl monitor and alarm. Also included is a Sundance Titan automation system and a Sun StorageTek SL500 modular library system for archiving.

HD studio, production control room, audio, and central equipment room (CER) are on the main floor while on the third floor are edit suites, the main CER and master control.

The main production and audio control room features a Studer Vista 5 digital audio mixer, 360 Systems DR600 instant replay sound file player, Sharp LCD displays, and a Crestron control system with touch panel. The system also includes a Tandberg ASI encoder, Extron HD router, Nugget HD player, Wohler digital audio monitors, Marshall 5.6 rackmount monitors, and AVP patch fields. Archiving is done with a Front Porch Digital DIVA system and on-air automation is created with an Avid Sundance Titan system. The edit suites each have two Thomson Grass Valley Aurora editors and two recording areas for reporters. The heart of the system are the numerous Thomson Grass Valley K2 video servers, Aurora Edits, Production SAN edit suites, and a Trinix video router, which all help to improve workflow. The Score can now ingest, edit and broadcast up to 22 HD feeds at a time, providing content for television, radio, online and mobile applications. Dave’s professional background includes 24 years in television news, including 7 and 14-year stints at CJOH Ottawa and 2 years at CKWS Kingston. Dave was also Station Manager at APTN overseeing the build at their new Winnipeg Broadcast Centre in 1999-2000.

Sim Video 2009 Technology Open HouseOn January 29th, Sim Video hosted its fourth annual Technology Open House in Toronto and experienced an unprecedented turnout of industry professionals eager to take in the latest in digital cinematography and high definition production tools.
