Using a view finder

http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/cezanne/sl/cezanne.skull.jpg

The view finder will help to frame a composition for an artwork just like a camera only takes a picture of what the lens sees.

The view finder helps to take away all of the “stuff” that an artist doesn’t want to pay attention to around their picture.

Proportioning your artwork

Drawing proportions is done best when you think about simple shapes such as circles, squares, ovals, rectangles.

It is also helpful to look for simple lines to draw through the picture such as straight, curved, or zigzag lines.

Think of fractions when you think of proportions.

Many artists will divide a composition into ½’s, 1/3’s, or ¼’s.

The skull in Cezanne’s still life fills up the top-left quarter of the painting.

The white cloth fills up the bottom-left of the painting.

The table is all on the bottom half of the painting.

The dark blue cloth is on the top half of the painting

Most of the fruit is touching the middle line of the painting.

Each of the fruit is about 1/16th the size of the painting.
