Thomas Palmerand his sons, Loreman and William, came here in 1848. The father entered the east half of the northwest quarter of section 32, where he lived until the timeof his death. Loreman entered the east half of the northwest quarter of section32, and lived there until he died. William entered the east half of the northeast quarter of section 32. He lived there for some years; then sold outand removed to Missouri; but returned after a short stop, and has since died.

He was involved in the following event Black Hawk War of 1832 The Black Hawk War began soon after the Sauk Indians, led by Black Hawk, faring poorly in Iowa where the government had moved them, recrossed the Mississippi River and moved back to their former cornfields to plant a new crop. As tensions mounted, panicky settlers killed two Indians seeking a parley and bearing a white flag. Black Hawk, enraged, began killing white settlers. Sauk followers of Black Hawk were massacred at the mouth of the Bad Axe River in Wisconsin by Illinois militia led by General Henry Atkinson. Old men, women, and children were all killed without regard for pleas of mercy or white flags. Black Hawk, deserted by his Winnebago allies, surrendered, thus ending the Black Hawk War. Mr. Hitt was one of the oldest inhabitants and also one of the earliest settlers. he came here in 1825 when it was still a wilderness inhabited by roving tribes of indians. he was a navive of Faquier County, Virginia and came first to Vandalia, Ill. and after a brief stay came north with a friend John M. Curtis. In 1831 he married Rebeca Brown of Fulton County, Illinois He enrolled in the U.S. Militia during the Black Hawk War. He served in the war of 1812 when he was 19 years old. and was stationed at Alexandria, VA. Obituary: Martha Hitt Miller was born at Elizabeth, April 17, 1837. She fitted herself for teaching and was three? at Colesburg, IA. At this time a young Methodist minister, Rev. F.X. Miller was preaching there. The two met, loved each other and were married, and began a human life together in a fellowship, and understanding as deep as is often given to mortals. For 52 years they journeyed together, and two years ago last April their many friends gathered about their table to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Long description of her works. She passed away at Des Moines, July 9, 1916. Survivors: husband, brother Samuel Hitt of Elizabeth and Leslie Hitt of Rockford, sister Mrs. Alice Harrison of Sterling, niece, Mrs. Alice R. Kevern of Elizabeth, nephews, F.X. Newcomer of Dixon, and Owen Harrison of Sterling, IL.

He is found in the 1850 Census for Greene County, Alabama, living alone, therefore, it mightbe assumed that his wife had died and all his children had married or left home. (Deed Book KK, p. 132). On 5 March 1824, Leroy Kilby and Eleanor his wife conveyed to James Hitt and Willis Reynolds, for $80, 17 acres, Lot #4, a part of the dower land assigned to Eleanor Marye, dec'd, widow of Peter Marye dec'd. (Deed Book QQ, p. 436). In September 1837, for $1020, James Hitt and Frances his wife deeded to Joel Hitt three parcels of land: 1) 43 3/4 acres on which James Hitt's house is situated, E/S Bullocks Branch adjacent to Presley Brown and Joseph Sibert, 2) 57 acres Bullocks Branch adjacent to William Hitt and 3) 65 1/2 acres conveyed to Joel Hitt by Thomas C. He married Barbara Ann Hershey (3606), daughter of Abraham Hershey (7711) and Mary Herr (7712), on 3 Apr 1823 at Washington Co., Maryland; married by Rev.Thomas Smith Hitt bro.to Samuel. He died on 15 Nov 1859 at Mt. Morris, Ogle Co., Illinois, at age 60. He was buried after 16 Nov 1859 at Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris, Ogle Co., Illinois.He 1. Samuel resided on the Antietam from the death of his uncle, the Hon. Robert Smith, in 1818,from whom he inherited the property, until 1835 when he led a colony to Illinois.2. Samuel Hitt and Nathaniel Swingley entered claims for more than 5000 acres of land in RockRiver Valley near Mt. Morris, Ogle County, Illinois in about 1835/1836. They recruitedfamilies from Maryland to settle on the land, which was called the first "Maryland Colony".3. In 1837 they traveled by wagon from Maryland to Wheeling, West Virginia, then via the Ohio,Missippi and Illinois rivers to Peru, Illinois, and finally by wagon to their destination. Thesettlers established their claims and built cabins near Mt. Morris.4. Samuel and his family lived first in a log cabin on one of his claims about 3 miles west of Mt.Morris. Work began on a new home, a large stone farmhouse, in 1858. The home was an"Italianate" farmhouse and the family was living in the home, which was not quite finished, atthe time of Samuel's death in 1859. The home has changed little since it was built. In 1912indoor plumbing was added. The seventeen room home was listed in the National Register in1985. The home was once the center of Samuel's vast land holdings. In 1989 the home wascompletely surrounded by farmland and is not visible to local traffic.5. The Rock River Seminary at Mt Morris was formally dedicated on 3 January 1841. Samuelserved a number of terms on the Seminary's board of trustees. Because of financial difficultiesthe Seminary closed and later the buildings were sold and became the home of Mt MorrisCollege.6. Samuel was elected in 1844 as a representative to the Illinois General Assembly. He was alsoa Justice of the Peace, a local office holder, and the owner of the Pine Creek Mill, an thegeneral store.
