President's Message
A swell summer. I hope you have beenhaving some delicious downtime thissummer. I've been hitting the beach(here, with my lovebucket Sophie),hiking, ice skating (our obsession, justlook for us at Sharks Ice in San Jose),reading, and even, alas, working. I amespecially grateful to Camp Krem inBoulder Creek and Via West nearCupertino for giving my two children with
autism, not to mention many hundreds of others, the opportunity to enjoysummer camp.
Conference, Aug 15 deadline: SFASA's attention is quickly turning to ourDecember 3 adult autism planning conference at Stanford University, and theAugust 15 deadline is looming to submit proposals for discussion groups orbreakout groups, details below. It promises to be our best conference yet!

August 15 Deadline for SFASA's 2016 conference! SFASA's 2016 Conference, "Into the Future: AnAdult Autism/DD Planning Workshop" will beheld December 3 at the LKS Center at StanfordUniversity. We expect about 350 attendees andwill feature many small group sessions. If youwould like to propose a discussion group or
breakout presentation, please submit your proposal here by August 15.Registration will open to the public in September, and we expect it to sell out.So stay tuned to our website and newsletters for updates. Thank you!
BAARC: Encouraging Families to Connect with Research The Bay Area is a hotbed of autismresearch. In cooperation with theBay Area Autism Consortium, we'repleased to present BAARC, the BayArea Autism Research Challenge,an invitation to participate in an array

Take the Autism Society of California Survey by August 13
Attention parents and adults with developmental disabilities, Autism Society ofCalifornia launched its 2016 Survey! ASC uses the findings of this research tosupport our work in improving the lives of all affected by autism and otherdevelopmental disabilities. Those who complete the survey will have the optionto enter a chance to win $100 gift card to Target. Deadline to enter for the GiftCard will be August 13th. Winners will be notified August 15th. The criminal justice system's tragic ignorance of autism
By Dhruv Joshi. I live in Union City, California. My 19yearold son with autism becomesviolent sometimes. He throws furniture around and might get hurt in the process. He triesto grab and bite. However, he has never used weapons. We had to call the Union Citypolice two times in the last 18 months. Both times the police handled the situation reallywell. The impossible odds of creating autism housing are gettingmore impossible
By Jill Escher. One of my "real" jobs when I'm not volunteering at SFASA is providingultra lowincome housing to adults with developmental disabilities. It's a momandpopoperation, we currently house seven tenants with developmental disabilities and severalothers with other mental and physical disabilities, all in standard communityapartments....
