WHAT EMPLOYERS SAY

West Highland College UHI has built up close contacts with many employers over the years. This cooperation is invaluable for many of our students who are required to do work experience aspart of their course. These experiences enrich our students’ studies and their understanding of theworkplace and many go on to successful employment with the business they have got to knowafter they have finished their time at college.

Mandy Cameron, CarrGomm Service Manager

(Lochaber & Skye):

“Working in partnership with West Highland College UHI hasbeen hugely successful for Carr Gomm as we have benefitted

from four successful applicants to our organisation which was ourkey aim with this project. It has also helped the organisation toform a strong link with the college and it has helped with our

ongoing promotion of the care sector being a career that youngpeople can get involved with. By employing students

undertaking their health and social care studies we know thatwe are not only gaining employees with an interest in the

sector but that they are also well educated in both thetheoretical and practical side of care work.”

“Campbell Grant,

Sitekit Ltd"As a Skye-based software SME, selling throughout the

UK, I can confirm that the scarcity of appropriately skilledstaff is by far the most limiting factor in business growth and

job creation locally. In fact it is an acknowledged UK-wideeconomic development problem.

The future is digital and virtual. We desperately need moreComputer Scientists and Software Engineers (not merely

computer users) if this country is to compete in the globalmarket for digital services. The education sector needs

to adapt faster to the changing world of work andWest Highland College UHI are leading the

way in this."

“ I grew up in Kyle of Lochalsh leavingschool in 1996 and although I gained 3Highers, I chose not to go on to furtheror higher education at that time.In 2015/16, my friend studied theCrofting and Countryside Skills coursein Broadford and he told me all aboutit as he went through. As a result ofthis, and also seeing the positivechange in him as a person, I decided togive it a try. I am very glad that I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It pushed me in every possible way.I particularly enjoyed the dry stone walling, chainsaw and quad-biking courses.

In the course of a year, my employabilityhas risen dramatically. I could nowgain employment in many differentoutdoor roles, from gardening toestate work.

I would highly recommend this course. It really has a bit of everything. Also,Heather McNeil is an inspirationalperson and an excellent course leader, for whom I have developed a well-earned respect.

The Plant Identification and Gardeningunits particularly interested me andthat is why I chose to study HNC Horticulture next.

So now I am studying HNC Horticultureby video conferencing, with ArgyllCollege. Because Argyll College is partof the University of the Highland andIslands in the same way as WestHighland College is, I can study in thecollege centre in Broadford where I live.

I hope to progress onto the HND, andmaybe even do the degree a year after that.

I am fascinated by the medicinalproperties of plants. Ultimately, Iwould like to grow medicinal plants forthe pharmaceutical, herbalist andaromatherapy industries.”

What our students say

Eilidh Richardson NC Fashion and Design

Mark Lawrie HNC Music

“Coming on to NC Fashion and Design was the best decision I have evermade. I learned the basics and somuch more. You are not taught any ofthese basic skills in school andcompleting this course has given me

the opportunity to really develop andgain confidence to move forward to ahigher level.

I have an unconditional offer for HNDTextiles in Glasgow Clyde College tostart at the end of August 2017.I have thoroughly enjoyed the course.

The tutor has been patient andsupportive. The whole of the class, which was of mixed ages, has been agreat learning environment. The best points for me have been thefirst time that I made something andcompleted it and also the FashionShow at the end of the year. I really

enjoyed the work leading up to it andseeing everyone getting involved andenjoying the evening.

I would definitely recommend thecourse to others. It’s a great all-inclusive course for anyone with aninterest in the creative industry or artsand crafts.

I would never have considered movingaway from home to do an NC as I justdidn’t feel ready to. This has given methe opportunity to study from my hometown and gain a qualification that hasallowed me to progress my educationand career in a subject I love.“

“I completed NC Music in 2015, had ayear out and then returned tocomplete my HNC this year.

I chose this course as I have a bigpassion for music. I've always wantedto learn about the nuts and bolts of

music along with all the businessaspects which, until I did these coursesI didn't really have any knowledge of.The qualification and experience thatI’ve gained will help greatly with myhopes for my future career. I havelearnt so much over the two years I'dlove to put it to use in the real worldand hope to get into teaching orbecome a full time professionalmusician. As long as I can sustain acareer in the music industry in someform that will be a good future for me.I can honestly say that all the hardwork has been worth it.

The parts of the course I enjoyed themost were learning music theory and

doing all the performances throughoutthe year. I’d never seen myself as avery studious person but with thetheory it was so engaging. Playing inthe college band was fun too, with somany talented people to playalongside, we made some great music together.

I would definitely recommend thecourse to others. Not everyone learnsat the same pace and having access toone to one support certainly combatsthis. It's a great class to have beenpart of and if there was a further level Iwould certainly make this College myfirst choice for future learning.”

“I am from Gairloch and this course isdelivered online. At first I foundgetting used to the 'networked'learning pretty intimidating, but once Igot to grips with all the equipment Iloved it and realised it was by far mypreferred method of studying.

Lecturers constantly ensured you wereincluded in everything and therewasn't once I didn't feel like part ofthe class. Phone calls were organisedwhen I needed to have a chat witheach of my lecturers and emails werealways responded to. I found this allvery helpful and kept me a partof everything.

While I was studying I was given the

opportunity to work in groups withmy classmates by using thetechnology available.

I was alone studying in Gairloch so Ireally appreciated those opportunities.I was also able to visit Fort Williamtwice for overnight stays. This enabledme to meet all the class and buildfriendships with them all -which really helped making me feelincluded, enjoy my lessons and feelmore comfortable and confident abouttaking part in discussions with theclass as a whole.

After completing NC Early Educationand Childcare, I got a job at the localprimary school as a Pupil Support

Assistant and also at West HighlandCollege UHI’s Gairloch centre as aLearning Facilitator, supporting otherstudents who are studying in this ruralarea. I took a year out to get a feel forthe working environment anddetermine if education and childcarewas the career path I wished to follow. After working there for the last 9months and loving every minute, ithas really pushed me and focused meto do my BA (Hons) in Child and YouthStudies with West Highland CollegeUHI and studying at the LearningCentre in Gairloch. Being able to studyin Gairloch has been highly beneficialfor me as I have managed to study andbetter myself while living in the place Ilove most - home.”

Management, Adventure Performanceand Coaching and Adventure Education.

Each programme has its own identityand focus but there are also importantsimilarities: common ground, skillsand knowledge that all adventureprofessionals must hold in order tooperate. This common ground is whatwe call the Adventure Pathways Coreand it is built into each of the threeadventure degrees.

Dave MacLeod Dave MacLeod is a world-renowned performer and authorin rock and ice climbing; sportsscience; sports medicine andadventure film making.

Which adventure activities areyou involved in, and how did youget to where you are now?I climb at a high level in bouldering, sport climbing, rock climbing, iceclimbing and alpinism and haveclimbed hundreds of new routesaround the world. I’ve written twobooks on climbing performance and Iam a blogger. I’ve also worked in themountains as a filmmaker.

What do adventure performanceand adventure coaching meanto you?

I’m pretty obsessed with every aspectof training and performance. My firstbook 9 out of 10 climbers make thesame mistakes, is essentially abehavioural science book. Iinvestigated what held amateurathletes back and found that it was

behavioural habits causing them todeviate from the principles of training.I am interested in the interfacebetween scientific data and the wayhumans make use of it. This interfaceis where opportunities for performancebreakthroughs are created or lost.

What education have you had incoaching or sports science related areas?I have a degree in Physiology & SportsScience and a Masters in ExerciseScience. It’s critical to follow newresearch, so I read a huge amount.Using new knowledge, I have smashedmy personal bests in climbing. I alsocoach climbers: there is no substitutefor observing their movement, habitsand characteristics.

Where do you find the ideas ofcoaching and sports science being useful to your professional practice? There isn’t an area where sportsscience understanding is not critical forpractice. For example, the latest

research has developed nutritional strategies for all sorts of adventuresports applications.

What are the highlights of your work, and what motivates you?My own self coaching is the highlightand most motivating aspect of mywork. It’s always easiest to experimentwith new ideas on yourself! Alsowriting two books and readingpeople’s stories on my blog.

What do you think the future holdsfor adventure sports coaching? The development of adventure sportsand the culture of performance withinthem blow my mind. The benefitsadventure sports bring to wellbeingand public health are recognised andthere will be more resources for studyand research into performance andimproved facilities. Adventure sportsneed leaders with expertise and thereare great rewards for people with theimagination and rigour to take on that role.

Tim JepsonTim Jepson (retired) was a trainerof teachers of outdoor andadventure education. The list of people whom he has taught and inspired assuccessful teachers and leaders inthe sector is phenomenal, and inoutdoor circles his name is short-hand for the highly influentialcourse that he led.

Which adventure activities are youinvolved in, and how did you get towhere you are now?My main areas are: mountaineering;rock-climbing; kayaking and skiing.

My interest began with my father anddeveloped at university. I trained to be aGeography and Outdoor Activitiesteacher and worked as an instructor at the NationalMountaineering Centre, Plas y Brenin. In my later career I lectured inEducation at Bangor University.

What skills do you think are mostvaluable to an adventure education practitioner? An adventure education practitionerneeds to be able to read people's

emotions from body language, facialexpression, voice tone and groupinteraction. They also need to besupportive of individuals throughout arange of emotional responses toadventurous situations, and becreative in finding ways to modifyadventures in order to best meetchanging circumstances.

What did you personally hold as coreprinciples in your work in adventureeducation? Learning to work towards outcomeswhich are uncertain is good practicefor life; adventure is a process not anoutcome; each adventure is unique tothe individual who experiences it;adventures shared with other peopleare richer than those you have on yourown; the outdoors is a great place tohave adventures, but you can haveadventures anywhere; lessons arelearnt from adventures, whether theadventurer recognises them or not;adventures are best when initiated bythe adventurers.

What have been the highlights ofyour work, and what are the keymotivations?Although I have had many, wonderfuladventures shared with energetic andenthusiastic trainee teachers, the truemotivation for keeping going hascome later when those traineesbecomes teachers and tell you of theadventures they are having with theirown pupils. That's true fulfilment!

What do you think the future holdsfor adventure education? The need for adventure education toimpact on young people's lives willnever diminish. Adventurousexperiences, physical, social andenvironmental, will become moreimportant as our lives becomeincreasingly technical, hectic and uncertain.

What has adventure educationtaught you about yourself? To be open-minded and to never makeassumptions - I'm still working onboth of those!

Graham Doyle Erasmus+ student with the School ofAdventure Studies Graham has set up his own business in Ireland:www.theirishexperience.com

I studied Adventure TourismManagement year 2 in West HighlandCollege UHI and it was the best andmost useful part of my 3 year degree inATM which I was studying full timewith my parent college 'Institute ofTechnology Tralee' in Ireland. Ipurposefully went back to full timeeducation with the intention ofstarting my own adventure tourismcompany upon completion and thiswas something that never waivered.

Going to WHC UHI on an Erasmus+year was probably the best decisionI made in relation to my studies and

career within the adventure tourism industry.

The college was geared up specificallyto meet my exact needs as anadventure tourism student. It may besmall, but this only enhanced myexperience as I could clearly see thatthe faculty cared about their student

groups and wanted us to succeed, progress and better ourselves. Everyeffort was made to facilitate this and I genuinely benefited from it.

Surrounding yourself with qualitypeople who have talents that you wantto learn is key to bettering yourself. You need benchmarks to rise up to. Thecollege was full of these kinds ofpeople, from the highly industryexperienced and talented lecturersthemselves who helped me eminentlyon an academic as well as a practicallevel, to the student body who were alldriven by the same engine as I was andhad outstanding talents that I couldlearn from.

Starting your own business is adaunting task and really takes totalcommitment and no shortage of self-belief. The college gave me the belief Ineeded to be sure I was ready to takethat first step on the self-employmentladder. This was not only achieved bysome great teachings from veryindustry relevant modules such as'Management of Adventure Tourism'and 'Small Business Panning', but forme it was also the organised andstructured practical side of our studieswhere I felt we as students wereallowed to flourish.

I left WHC UHI with new NGBs, skills, friends and ideas! I was confident likenever before and ready to kick on tothe next chapter of bringing mybusiness idea to life!

'The Irish Experience' is now a livingbreathing company in operation fromsummer 2016. I am very thankful toWHC UHI for their valuable input intothe company via my studies. It is atime I will always remember for all the right reasons.
