KEEN USA, through its network of affiliates across the country, provides free sports and recreation programs for young people with disabilities. KEEN’s model is very simple: we pair a trained volunteer “coach”, one-to-one, with a young “athlete,” and let them discover together just what they can do. KEEN’s programs are unstructured and non-competitive, allowing young people facing even significant challenges to find joy through play.

KEEN accepts every child, regardless of the nature or severity of their disability. And while their young athletes are spending time with our dedicated corps of volunteers, KEEN parents can find some much-needed respite: shopping, reading, exercising themselves, or chatting with other parents — maybe even taking a nap!

KEEN’s programs consist of general gym-based sports, such as basketball and playing with a parachute to music-and-dance or arts-and-crafts, as well as swimming, bowling and tennis. With KEEN’s one-to-one, unstructured approach, almost any activity is possible.

Dear KEEN Families and Supporters:

Of our many accomplishments of 2010, perhaps the most significant were those that strengthened our capacity to support our affiliates and their vibrant recreation programs for young people with disabilities. Following the rapid establishment of several affiliates from coast to coast in the early 2000s, the KEEN USA Board recognized the need to step back and focus on buttressing the foundation on which our affiliate structure is built. How did we do this?

With good friends. Our ability to provide services nationwide at no cost to our athletes and their families is dependent upon support from many, many generous donors across the country. In 2010, KEEN USA co-hosted our 10th Annual KEENFest with our Greater DC affiliate at the Embassy of France in Washington, DC. We also received valuable support from Junior League chapters, Variety Children’s Foundation and a host of local businesses, both large and small.

With good information. In 2010, through a generous grant from the CVS-Caremark Charitable Trust, we completed a thorough Program Effectiveness Evaluation. Using focus groups and surveys, we collected feedback from over 600 parents and volunteers in all seven of our affiliate markets. The quantitative and qualitative data from these participants will help us to improve the KEEN experience for our athletes and volunteers, now and well into the future.

With good people. Two critical hires in 2010 that have already proven tremendously successful are Kate Hurson, our Executive Director, and Sarah Beth Lardie, our National Development Director. Kate has a long history with KEEN, having joined the KEEN family in 2004 when her son became one of KEEN’s athletes. A former KEEN USA Board member, Kate is based in the Washington, DC area. Working closely with Kate and based in New York City, Sarah Beth brings to KEEN a wealth of experience in growing small non-profits, and has a wide array of expertise in procuring grants, working with major donors and foundations, and special events planning. Individually, they bring key knowledge and competencies; together, they form an indomitable team.

We’ve also recruited good people at the local level, in particular from Marriott International. We now have 8 Marriott executives either serving on local boards and/or providing critical support to our programs and special events in most KEEN locations. We are deeply appreciative of the contributions of our volunteer leaders around the nation, and hope you will consider joining them in 2011.

We emerged, at the end of 2010, a stronger, healthier KEEN, and our metrics show it. Amid all these crucial activities and endeavors at the corporate level, our programs continued to grow: we offered over 15,000 hours of programs with over 3,500 volunteers who donated over 30,600 hours of their time to make a difference in the lives of our KEEN athletes. We hope we can count on you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at a KEEN event in 2011.

In 2010, KEEN provided over 15,000 hours of programming to over 800 athletes through 36 programs in 7 affiliate locations. KEEN volunteers served over 30,600 hours with a total value of approximately $653,000.11 Calculated using the Independent Sector’s hourly rate for 2010.

KEEN Programs: Volunteer DrivenVolunteers: The Heart of KEEN

“Volunteering at KEEN is the best part of my week!” – KEEN Volunteer

Every weekend, hundreds of volunteers across the country come to KEEN programs to give of themselves and their time — young professionals, college and high school students, seniors, corporate and community groups.

Each year, hundreds of individuals, corporations, foundations and groups generously support KEEN USA and its affiliates with financial gifts. This generosity allows KEEN to continue to provide all programs entirely free-of-charge to our athletes and their families.

Many of these donations, large and small are championed by a friend of KEEN. For all of you unsung heroes – we thank you so very much. The gifts you and your loved ones provide give KEEN affiliates the essentials necessary to continue providing for the children and families who take part in our programs. Thank you one and all!
