1.4ASEANScienceLeadershipProgramme2017

The ASEAN Science Leadership Programme 2017 (ASEAN SLP 2017) was held at the Higher EducationLeadership Academy (AKEPT), Labu,Malaysia on 7-11 September 2019. ASEAN SLP was inaugurated in2016 inBangsaen,Thailand. It isan initiativeof theThaiNationalScienceandTechnologyDevelopment






Agency in partnership with the Global Young Academy (GYA), inspired by the successful Africa ScienceLeadership Programme (ASLP). It serves early- tomid-career researchers in basic and applied sciences,engineering,socialsciences,artsandthehumanitiesininASEANcountries.Theprogrammeaimstogrowmid-career ASEAN academics in the areas of leadership, team development, engagement andcollaboration,withtheintentionofenablingthemtosolvethecomplexissuesthatfacebothASEANandtheglobalcommunity.

ParticipantsofASEANSLP2017inMalaysiaon7-11September2019

The ASEAN Science Leadership Programme 2017 (ASEAN SLP 2017) seeks to identify and select leadingyoung ASEAN researchers in all disciplines of sciences including engineering, natural sciences, medicine,socialsciences,artsandthehumanitiesasASEANSLP2017fellows.Beyondresearchexcellence,programapplicantshadtoshowanongoingcommitmenttoserviceordeliveringpracticalbenefit fromtheirwork.Successfulapplicantswereexpectedtodemonstrateoneormoreofthefollowing:

• A continuing research/academic position at a research institute, institution of higher learning, orindustry;

• Asustainedrecordofoutstandingscientificoutput;• Interestintranslatingandcommunicatingtheresultsoftheirworktoimpactinsociety;• Demonstratedleadershipabilityinresearchandbeyond;• Interestintheroleofresearchinaddressingcomplexissuesaffectingsociety;• Interestincollaborationsacrossdisciplinesandsectors(e.g.industry,government,etc.);• DesiretochampionNationalYoungAcademiesasthevoiceofyoungscientists• Commitmenttowardsengagingintheactivitiesofthefellowship;and• Intenttosharewhatislearnedintheprogrammewiththeirbroadernetworks.






TheASEAN SLP 2017 selected 35 official fellows from 11 ASEAN countries. Vietnamhad three selectedfellowsincludingDr.TranQuangHuy(ChairofVYA,NationalInstituteofHygieneandEpidemiology),Assoc.ProfLeAnhTuan(VYAfriend,HanoiUniversityofScienceandTechnology),andDr.NguyenThiLuyen(VYAfriend,ThaiNguyenUniversity).During5daysoftheprogramme,therewerealotofactivitiesrelatedtodiscussion and exchangeon the science leaderships skills, ideas, challenges and solutions for the issuesthatASEANisfacing.

ThreefellowscomingfromVietnam(lefttoright:T.Q.Huy;N.T.Luyen;andL.A.Tuan)

Astheprogrammescheduled,representativesofNationalYoungAcademiesincludingIndonesia,Malaysia,Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam had shared stories and challenges in the establishment andoperationofNationalYoungAcademies.Therewerealso10membersandalumnusofGYAalsocomingtotheprogrammetosharetheirexperienceaspartofGYA.

Particularly, all representatives of 11 ASEAN countries discussed about the road map of the ASEANNetwork of Young Scientists in upcoming years, and outlined the program of activities. Dr. Huy wasnominatedasapersoninchargeofVietnam.
