Sleuths troupe performs to sold out crowdBy maRy BROTHERTOn

This spring, to celebrate 14 years in publication, SENIOR LIFE brought a troupe of actors from Sleuths Mystery

Dinner Theater Show in Orlando for an evening of laughter and mystery-solving fun. Within two weeks, 200 seats had sold out and an-

other 50 added. Those sold out before the end of the next week.

With such a tremendous response, the publisher of VIERAVOICE/SENIOR LIFE brought another unique show to Brevard County and again, held it at Viera Holiday Inn. The difference this time was the addition of a mati-nee show and while not as popular as the evening show;

the matinee came close to selling out, too. The dinner show sold to capacity with 300 seats reserved months in advance. Before the Oct. 21 dinner, nearly a dozen names had been placed on a list, waiting to be called for the next show.

Attendees of all ages said they like the convenience of having the shows brought to Brevard. VV

By gEORgE WHiTE

The Suntree Elementary School Fall Festival, to be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, may be a fun, old-fashioned, free carnival for all ages, but that’s not the most important part of the annual event.

The funds generated at the auction will be used by each teacher to supplement classroom needs not handled by the school board for lack of funds. Other proceeds from the festival activities will be used to assist the school’s PTO with its ongoing events and activities for the school and long-term goal to advance its technology needs.

More than 2,500 people are expected to attend the school’s largest fundraiser featuring entertainment including performances by Suntree music program students and entertainment by other local groups.

Other highlights include games, bounce houses and slides, dunk tank, speed pitch, party train and cake walk. In addition, there will be arts and crafts activities and a book sale. A silent auction to be held throughout the day in the cafeteria will feature more than 100 items assembled and submitted by individual classrooms.

Food and games are for sale at the festival at the cost of four tickets for $1 with most items ranging from 2 to 12 tickets. There is also a pay-one-price wristband for $15 the day of the event which offers unlimited access to the Angry Birds Game, laser tag, the human hamster ball and all bounce houses and slides.

This year’s festival co-chairs are Heather Balser and Michelle Ford.

Suntree Elementary School is located at 900 Jordan Blass Dr. in Melbourne. For more information, call 321-242-6480. VV

What one word would your friends say describes you?

Intentional.

What is the most exotic food you have ever tasted?

While traveling to Communist Russia in 1986, I ate reindeer on an ice cutter, a cruise ship from Stockholm, Sweden to Helsinki, Finland. I did not like the taste!

How do you get from here to there?

Usually in a straight line, but if not in a hurry, I enjoy the scenic route.

Which do you prefer — star Wars or star Trek?

Unlike my two sons, I am not a devotee of science

fiction, but if I had to choose—“Star Wars.”

Would you rather be disabled and smart or able and stupid?

This is easy—the former.

What do you consider the greatest invention of all time?

Thirty years ago, my answer would have been different, but today, it would be the computer and the Internet.

What is your pet peeve?Talking heads who do not

know what they are talking about!

Would you rather read an awesome book

Someone SpecialRay Cornelius

Ray Cornelius served 8 years as a Family Court Judge in New York and 20 years as a Supreme Court Justice, which is equivalent to Circuit Court Judges in Florida. He has been a long term member of the Florida Bar and volunteers for Brevard County Legal Aid, either for the day-long advice clinic or representing foster children in the Brevard Circuit Court. He is interim president-elect of Viera Rotary and involved in many community activities.

His thoughts

Words to Live by:

Is it the truth?

or watch a blockbuster movie?

I am not a movie goer. I would enjoy a book, perhaps a novel by John Grisham. Although he writes fiction, in my opinion he gets it right about the legal profession.

Which is worse, to be stuck in an elevator or on an escalator?

Another easy question— being stuck in an elevator is much too confining. VV

Local churches offer 12 steps of Christmas

VIERA VOICE Linda WigginsCo-Senior Pastor Terri Hill of Suntree United Methodist Church, a popular spot for Alcoholics Anonymous and its spin-off recovery meetings, said faith communities are an important resource for the meetings for many reasons.

By Linda WigginS Suntree/Viera is a popular

crossroads for churches and other faith centers feature-ing 12-step meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and the help group for loved ones, Al-Anon.

“Holidays are especially tempting in our culture to use substances as part of the celebration,” said Terri Hill, co-senior pastor at Suntree United Methodist Church, the most popular local meeting site. “More than ever, the holiday season is a time to come alongside those in recovery and give them our utmost support.”

When Hill was in seminary, she served as a student chap-lain in a detoxification unit, attending many meetings.

“I grew to have enormous respect for people in recov-ery. Battling addiction is a

huge challenge and the recovery community is awesome in their support of one another,” Hill said.

Warren, identified only by his first name, said he has battled depression most of his life. “I guess I have expectations that around the holidays I should be surrounded by a loving family and friends, like you see in TV commercials,” he said. “Reality is disappoint-ing, and it is very tempting to reach for something to make me feel better. But then it leads to me feeling worse.”

In addition to A.A., Suntree United Methodist provides space for N.A. and Al-Anon meetings. A.A. also meets at Hope Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Advent Lutheran Church, Faith “Viera” Lutheran Church, Temple Israel and the V.A. Clinic in Viera.

Twelve-step groups oper-

ate on the small donations of their members, and meeting in churches for a small group donation makes it unneces-sary to pay for buildings. Faith centers often open their doors during holidays when they would otherwise be closed.

“We have such a commit-ment to supporting those in recovery that we make special provisions for meetings to occur when there are holidays and the buildings are otherwise closed,” Hill said. “Opening up the church facilities is a wonderful way to support the recovery community and to bless their lives. I am very grateful that we have the facilities that can be used by the recovery community.”

For an A.A. meeting schedule or referrals to other 12-step groups, visit aaspacecoast.org or call 321-633-0052. VV

The need has increased across the county, even in areas not considered low-income, according to School Board Member Karen Henderson, representing Viera, Suntree, Rockledge and parts of Melbourne.

“The number of students receiving free and reduced lunch has increased dramatically,” Henderson said. “When one or both parents gets laid off, other issues cascade down, such as loss of health insurance coverage. Many people are doing everything they can to keep the household going in what they hope will be a temporary condition.”

Coats also can be dropped

off at BankFirst, the gold-domed bank on the south side of North Wickham Road east of Baytree in Viera. BankFirst collected 300 coats last year.

“This way the whole com-munity can take part even if they do not have a child in school,” said BankFirst spokeswoman Elaine Kelton.

The drive was launched last year by District 5 Brevard County Commissioner Andy Anderson, who again teamed up with School Board Vice Chair Amy Kneessy and School Board Member Andy Ziegler to col-lect and redistribute coats for needy Brevard County

school children. Coats for Kids started on

Oct. 1 and runs through Dec. 1. New or gently used coats can be left at all Brevard County public schools. The distribution period for the coats will be Dec. 5 through 15 at the 5th District Commission Office on Sarno Road in Melbourne, with school representatives collecting coats for their students.

Plaza Cleaners on Apollo Drive in Melbourne will again be donating services to clean the coats before they are redistributed.

For more information, call 321-253-6611. VV

By Linda WigginS When Jane Dale heard that

the Devereux Resale store in Viera was closing, her inner hero became activated.

“I thought, this beauti-ful store, and all the ways it helps those students at Devereux, it has to go on,” Dale of the residential school in Viera for children with emotional and other challenges.

Regular customers — which include Dale — can expect certain things to stay the same, such as the upscale décor and merchandise, both brand new and vintage.

Dale will be adding things she hoped for as a frequent visitor: lemon water or lem-onade on hand for refresh-ment, samples of delicious gourmet food items offered for sale, and a seating area

so that Viera’s leading com-munity members can trade the happenings of the day in an enjoyable social setting.

The shop will continue to accept donations, with a portion of all sales continu-ing to benefit the nonprofit school, but Dale will scour estate sales and manufac-turer closeouts for upscale items as well.

She will build on the selection of beautiful gowns

and other formal wear popu-lar with patrons who must

have variety in their closets for annual gala benefits. VV

ViERa VOiCE. PhotoEds Heads is always a popular stop at the Eau Gallie Artworks festival.

By angELa SmiTH When Dennis Shattuchk

paints, he normally doesn’t have a live audience and typically isn’t outside.

If only for a weekend, the skilled painter and former member of the Art Gallery of Viera, whose works have shipped throughout the United States and internation-ally, will set up shop along the downtown Eau Gallie side-walks on Nov. 19 and 20.

Shattuchk will be one of 85 artists to line the streets for the 15th annual Artworks Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival.

Link Johnston founded the event designed to showcase local artists doing their work en plein aire, French for “in the open air”, as all of the artists in

the show will paint outdoors.“It’s one of the first fine arts

shows in the fall, it’s nearby and it always turns out to be better than expected,” Shattuchk said. “You kind of always learn from the audi-ence as you can get asked a lot of interesting questions, but it’s also a good way to promote art lessons and let people know what your art style is as they examine your work.”

This year Shattuchk plans to get the crowd buzzing as he plans to be more unusual with his pieces.

“It’s great to try out,” he said. “You have thousands of people to see what you’re doing and you’ll see how they’ll react to it.”

Throughout the two-day festival, folks will have a chance to see art in all shapes and forms — from painting and photography to glass, jew-elry, oils, watercolors, metal and ceramic sculpture. They can purchase pieces as well.

“There’s a lot of exchange and the artists definitely benefit from the public and the public learns from them,” said Pat Sams, Artworks com-mittee member. “It’s to get more people involved in the arts. This show is a perfect fit.”

At the conclusion of the fes-tival, artists will be awarded prizes for best of show and demonstrators of excellence, distinction and merit. For more information go to, artworksofeaugallie.org. VV

Viera High School’s Austin McDowell won first place for his 9/11-inspired essay in the Brevard Remembers 9/11 countywide essay con-test for high school seniors, earning him a $500 scholar-ship through the Brevard Schools Foundation, donated by Joseph Duda, retired CEO of the Viera Company.

The winning essay, reprint-ed in its entirety:

When asked the question “What does 9/11 mean to you?” I would have to answer, “It was the day the world stood still.”

I lived in upstate New York at the time and I was only in first grade. It was my father’s birthday, which should have been a good day. But I re-member my mother coming to get me early at school. She had tear-filled eyes and some panic in her voice, and she wanted us to get home where we would be safe and sound. I remember the teachers talk-ing about what happened and when I got home I started asking questions.

In an answer to a first grader, my mother said, “Bad people from another country are attacking us and trying to take us down and hurt us.”

I remember the pictures on television of the plane in the side of the tower but I don’t remember much after that, as I was still young. But in years to follow, all that changed.

It was now in our his-tory books. The “event that changed the world” was brought up in magazines and on television, especially on its anniversaries or for special holidays. We’ve learned about it in our classes at school and

then more from our families and friends over the years.

As a member of the JROTC at school and a future Marine, like my father, I can now tell you that though it was a hor-rific day for America, a day of war, it is a day that I believe all Americans, regardless of race, religion and color, came together as one to help with the fight; to help with the recovering of family to put others who lost at ease; to help sup-port and be there for each other in this time of sor-row and not understand-ing; and to help rebuild that great city and the United States of America.

Those terrorists think they won that day, but I believe they only made us stronger, everyone united together to fight for those who were lost and for those who had lost.

Now that I am older and striving to be a future Marine, I will remember that day, September 11. But I will also remember the day just recently, when we fought back. Thanks to our great Navy Seals, we showed that international terrorist network that years may have passed, but you will still pay for the wrath you served on this great country of ours, the USA. We, like the Marines say, “Never Quit and Never Give Up,” and we planned and plotted and fired back. We showed

that country, and those peo-ple of Al-Qaeda, that we were only “encouraged not discour-aged” as a people, and as a country, that we will prevail!

This is what I believe makes us a great nation. Times like this when our sisters and

brothers are in need, we come together as one and overcome all obstacles, now and forever in the future!

God Bless America. Ooh Rah. VV

do to celebrate her 101st birthday? She makes sure she’s on time for her regular three-day-per-week aerobics class, of course!

Melbourne resident Joy Sawyer recently turned 101 years old, and she just barely had enough time after her water aerobics class to celebrate with her classmates and with staff at Health First’s Pro-Health & Fitness Center.

“What is my secret to long life,” Joy was asked. “Well, I guess it’s been eating my vegetables, and drinking lots of milk,” she said. “Good genes probably help too.”

Joy celebrated the day with a group of 4-year-old children from the Health First Center for Child Development came over to sing happy birthday. VV

So far, everything is going to plan for the Viera High School boys golf team.

The Hawks captured the district championship behind the stellar play of No. 1 player Max Menkes and were set to play in the Class 2A, Region 6 tourna-ment at the Royal St. Cloud Golf Links on Oct. 24.

“There will probably be four or five schools shoot-ing it out for two spots,” Hawks coach Paul Bentley said of regionals. “I’d say all four or five of those schools are pretty even. It’s going to be nail-biting stuff coming down to the 18th hole.”

If Viera can outplay Jensen Beach, Vero Beach and Spruce Creek for one of those two spots, the Hawks will earn a trip back to the Class 2A state tour-nament, which takes place Nov. 1-2 at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Menkes, a senior, was the only player to shoot under-par at the district tourna-ment, shooting a four- under 68.

“Max has been under the radar all season,” Bentley said. “There are a lot of people just starting to discover how talented he is. His swing is unique; it’s sound. I think he’s self-taught, too. That’s what’s

amazing about it.“From what I know, I don’t

think he’s ever had a formal lesson. I mean, he’s had help, sure. But I don’t see this guy driving all over the state, getting lessons. He’s an amazing kid.”

Should the Hawks not qualify as a team, Menkes has a chance to reach state as one of the top two indi-viduals. But Viera certainly has the talent to get there. Junior Christian Eraso shot a personal-best 76 at dis-tricts, and Cole Neff, Kerry Sweeney and Ben Hellmuth have played well all year.

“Any one of those five guys could go low,” Bentley said. VV

There is plenty of excitement around the Viera High School girls volleyball team — and with good reason.

The Hawks finished the regular season 19-5 and were the top seed in the district playoffs, where they were to host either New Smyrna Beach or University (Orange City) on Oct. 27.

From there, it’s off to the Class 7A regional playoffs, which begin on Nov. 1. It will be the second consecutive year Viera has reached the regionals. Last year marked the first time in school history the Hawks had gone that far.

“The girls have had a tremendous season so far; best record in Viera history at 19-5,” Hawks coach Sarah Sykes said. “We are extremely excited to host districts on the 27th and see how far we can move after that!”

Viera is led defensively by ju-nior Shelby Jelinek, who aver-ages seven digs a game. That’s

not only the best average in Brevard County, it ranks No. 2 in the state and No. 43 in the entire country.

Offensively, freshman set-ter Elaina Valencia entered the final week of the regular season ranked third in the county, averaging 7.5 assists per game. She finished the regular season with 441 assists and a team-high 44 aces.

Outside hitters Alex Bynum and Christine Moore have also had exceptional years. Bynum, a sophomore, is second on the team with 206 kills and third in digs with 299. Moore, a ju-nior, leads Viera with 271 kills and ranks second with 336 digs and 42 aces.

Junior middle blocker Jessica Augustine leads the team in blocks with 28.

Viera having its best sea-son in school history. With only three seniors — Kiera Keesecker, Maddie Reschke and Gabby Tomasura — Sykes and the Hawks are set up to have a successful future as well. VV

ViERa VOiCE Carl KotalaViera’s Christine Moore (top) is about to lay a big spike on the Satellite High defense. The Hawks beat the Scorpions in the final regular-season game and headed into district play with a school-best 19-5 record on Oct. 19, 2011 at Satellite Beach High School.

18th Annual Viera Tree LightingThis year marks the 18th annual Viera Tree-Lighting ceremony and instead of gathering at the fountain on Wickham and Murrell as it has in previous years, the celebration takes place at Viera’s Home Discovery Center at 7350 Shoppes Drive. The professionally decorated tree is 25 feet tall and will light up the gateway to central Viera. The

event will feature performances from a local school chorus before Santa arrives by fire truck to magically light the tree.Later in December, Santa will tour Viera neighborhoods on a fire truck. Santa’s tour runs from Dec. 12 through Dec. 16.For details and specific times in your subdivision, visit Viera.com/events.

Disabled Viera veteran Russ Marek is proud to be part of the inspiration behind the plot of the popular movie Dolphin Tale, which features an injured dolphin learning to swim with a prosthetic tail.

Marek, a 1989 graduate of Satellite High School, was severely injured Sept. 15, 2005 when an IED (impro-vised explosive device) tore through his tank, taking the lives of two of his crew members. He lost his right arm, right leg, left thumb and suffered a brain injury.

Watching the dolphin named Winter at the Clearwater aquarium helped him overcome his reluctance to using prosthetics.

“She had her very first one (tail) on and you could tell she really didn’t like it. I have to put one on and it’s not a real arm. It can’t do what an arm can do, but I figured, if that dolphin can do it, I can do it. She changed my attitude toward prosthetics,’’ he said.

Marek was part of a compos-ite character and has the distinction of being the first amputee veteran to visit Winter. He was featured prominently on a segment

on national TV on the Today show. He attended the premier of the movie in Tampa and was pleased with what he saw.

“It was fiction of course, but there was a lot of reality to the rescue and rehabilitation,’’ Marek said.

Winter’s plight and amaz-ing survival is very much a local story, said Megan Stolen, a research scientist at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in Melbourne Beach.

Found Dec. 10, 2005 on the eastern shore of Mosquito Lagoon in Canaveral National Seashore, the injuries to Winter’s entangled tail were life threatening, according to Stolen.

“With something like this

they usually bleed out or die from a chronic infection, which is what she had in her tale. Most often, we consider eutha-nasia because flukes (tails) are essentially the legs of the dolphin. We had never consid-ered prosthetics,’’ she said.

And, while Winter does not prefer to wear her tail, “it is an important step in her recovery,’’ Stolen said.

The spotlight from the movie has highlighted both disabled veterans issues and marine mammal rescue. Stolen hopes for a lasting impact in the local environment.

“We all have a responsibil-ity toward animals especially when it comes to debris in

the water. If we can be more thoughtful and decrease the risk of that, then the movie has done a great service,’’

she said. For information, call 321-

Manatee Elementary School hosted more than 1,000 attendees at its annual Harvest Hoe Down on Friday, Oct. 21. Students and their families dressed in their favorite outfits, from plaid shirts, to jeans, to cowboy boots and even cowboy hats for the free event. Even Principal Carl Brown wore overalls.

Colorful decorations were arranged by Parent Teacher Organization members Nicki Hensley and Paula Dribble. The Student Council sponsored a cakewalk, and the PTO provided snow cones and popcorn, with the school music department operating a bake sale.

The event has been co-chaired by teachers Ann Ehler and Cathy Gibson since Manatee opened its doors seven years ago. For more information, call 321-433-0050. VV

Schools in the Viera/Suntree area celebrated international Walk to School Day on Oct. 4, with some walking for miles and others on a mission to defeat disease. Quest Elementary School Coach christina Nestor organized a walk that raised $4,250 for diabetes research, far surpassing her goal to raise $1,000. “We wanted to support good health by walking, and at the same time do something

that could help others,” Nestor said. combining international Walk to School Day with a Walk for Diabetes, donations will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes research Foundation. a JDrF coordinator came to Quest and did a presentation for students in grades K-6 on the different types of diabetes and how type 2 can be prevented through exercise and a healthy diet. Parents, students and faculty members walked two miles to the school Starting at the Target Superstore parking lot on North Wickham road. all schools posted routes that

offered the long and short of walking paths. “You could not have asked for a better day. a light cloud cover kept us cool. it was great,” said Nicki Hensley, parent volunteer at Manatee Elementary School. Students sported colorful balloons and made elaborate posters to promote the fun and fitness. “it was great to build on our close sense of community by just getting out there and having fun together,” Hensley said. By Linda WigginS

Wendell “Tom” Thomas of Viera got the Oct. 18 birth-day surprise of his life when he flew in the cockpit of a single-engine airplane and the pilot told him to take the controls. It was a first since his days as an Air Force pilot, the memories flooding back like it was yesterday, he said.

“When he told me I could take over you better believe I didn’t hesitate. If I could have kept flying after my first re-tirement I sure would have,” Thomas said. The gift was a lift for the givers as well.

“We had an idea it would thrill him,” said his daugh-ter, Robin Thomas Johnson. She arranged the flight through husband Jimmy “JJ” Johnson’s childhood friend and pilot, Dr. Ken Simmons. She and sister Sandy Thomas Torrez flew with him.

Thomas’s wife, Terry, stayed safely on the ground.

“I haven’t seen him this excited since I don’t know when. It’s all he talked about for the longest time,” she said.

The retired pilot moved on from his 20 years in the service after many years sta-tioned in Japan, and as with all theaters of war, relying on the native staples for food.

“I’ll never eat rice again,” he said.

After retiring from the Air Force he moved on to much bigger aircraft with the U.S. space program, relocating to Brevard County. His last job before his final retire-ment was maintenance of the space shuttle orbiters. “I guess I didn’t have quite the right stuff to fly those birds,” he said with a chuckle.

With 40-plus years between piloting missions,

the pilot said Thomas never lost his touch.

“I was impressed with his precision when ascending, descending and turning,” said Simmons, Thomas puff-ing out his chest with pride. Simmons is a veterinarian in West Palm Beach, where the Johnsons live. The trio flew into Melbourne International Airport’s Baer Air terminal, delivered their gift, and flew home.

The gift was a break with tradition, which for years was to bring all of Thomas’ children and grandchildren together at Sonny’s Real Pit Barbecue in Viera for an afternoon meal, the group so large it often took up it’s own banquet room. This year, with a number of health issues arising, the group wanted to give Thomas an experience he would never forget. VV

When Isabel Bordin’s dad lost his job, the invitations to her classmates’ birthday parties still kept coming. To meet the demand for pricey gifts, she decorated basic flip-flops with trinkets and splashes of color that her friends loved.

When her father found an-other job Isabel kept cranking out her creations as part of a new business to generate profits for a purpose: lifting a little girl in Honduras from poverty.

“It makes me feel good when people say they love what I made and it makes me feel good that I can help someone else live a better life when I sell them,” said the 8-year-old entrepreneur, who sells up to 30 pairs at festivals and home shows.

Isabel is homeschooled, a decision her family made less for education quality and more for quality of life.

“We want to spend more quality time with our kids,” said Isabel’s mom, Michelle, whose children include Cole, 6, and Jack, 1.

Isabel donates proceeds through her scouting troop, American Heritage Girls, which meets at Freedom Christian Center in Viera. The scouting troop formed 15 years ago to provide a faith-based scouting experience.

Combining business with pleasure has paid off in many ways, according to Michelle Bordin. “She has learned the economic side of the business. She understands the need for profit, that if you have enough of it, you can help more people. She understands that after expenses there are profit,

saving and donation portions.”It is a requirement of the

troop that the girls make money to benefit the local and world community, according to Susan Gattle, troop leader.

In addition to sponsoring Jeimi, in Honduras, through Compassion International, the troop funds Operation Christmas Child, where boxes of small gifts and uplifting scriptures are sent to individu-

als in poor countries.“Some of the girls use their

babysitting money. It doesn’t matter what they do, they must earn money and give to someone less fortunate,” Gattle said.

River lagoons, watch for the water temps to cool down. This should be a good time to target red fish and sea trout in the Flats and the bite should be consistent all day long. I recommend using live shrimp and gold spoons for these cruising flats predators.

Offshore The 8A Reef and some oth-

ers should start producing snapper, grouper and king-fish. A productive bait for the reef fish will be frozen sardines.

surf In November, anglers

should see better catches of flounder as the annual flounder run kicks off, along the beaches and inlets. The best bait for these flat fish are small finger mullet fished on the bottom of the inlet. Another alternative would be to cast a small jig tipped with a piece of shrimp and work it slowly on the bottom.

Freshwater The water levels are back

up in the St. Johns River and

the speck fishing should turn on as the first cold fronts return to the Space Coast.

When Steven Murdick deployed with a different unit to the Persian Gulf region last spring, his 11-year-old daughter Morgan wanted to do something to make a difference for her dad and his Coast Guard unit at Port Canaveral.

“My mom asked me what I could do, and I thought I would send Christmas boxes to my dad’s unit,” Morgan said.

Morgan’s mother, Kellene Murdick thought her daugh-ter meant that she wanted to send a few boxes stuffed with goodies to the 125-person unit.

But Morgan had a larger vision. Morgan envisioned each person receiving a box stuffed with Christmas treats.

“I started asking family and friends, and people started helping [me] with the boxes,” Morgan said. She wrote a let-ter explaining her project and sent it via e-mail to her 4-H club and two home-school groups. She found volunteers to fill all 125 boxes.

The box Morgan made for

her dad includes a puzzle, nuts, snacks and granola bars, among other gifts. Each volunteer who fills a box pays $13 to cover the cost of ship-ping it overseas. Each box will contain a letter.

On shipping day, plenty of moms with vans will be help-ing Kellene haul the pyramid of boxes that fill a spare room in her house to the Cocoa Post Office. The project will cul-minate with a send-off party for the volunteers at the post office on a Saturday afternoon in November. Santa will make an appearance and snacks and hot cocoa and Christmas mu-sic will be part of the mix. The kids will wear Santa hats and wave American flags. Photos taken at the event will be part of a photo presentation that Kellene is making for the unit overseas.

“Morgan is very close to her dad, so the idea of having him gone for a year was not exciting; of course, no child would love the idea. She has been very resilient through this whole process and has handled it very well,” Kellene said.”VV

By angELa SmiTH

For the past two years, a group of women have gath-ered from throughout the Viera community, but they don’t meet to discuss the lat-est book they’ve read or to trade recipes - they meet to exchange their love for the underwater world.

What began as a simple Meetup.com group to find lo-cal women who enjoy scuba diving, is now a club of 15 to 20 women — the SeaDragons Scuba Girls.

When Rockledge resident Lori Heinssen began attend-ing meetings she didn’t know much about her husband’s favorite hobby, much less how to swim underwater with 20 to 50 pounds on her back. But within a short period of time that changed.

“I actually got into diving, not that I wanted to, but my husband felt like it should be on my bucket list,” she said. “But before I knew it, I’m certified and I’m joining a club before I’m even a diver. But the real reason is because of the women and if it weren’t for them I would not be diving and I would still be afraid.”

For many of the scuba en-thusiasts, it’s a fun opportuni-ty; for others, it’s about seeing the world from a different perspective where the possi-bilities seem as endless as the

depths of the ocean.“I like all aspects of div-

ing, but because I’m a more experienced diver, one of my favorite things about it is in-troducing new divers because they have a sort of newness and that’s sort of infectious,” said SeaDragons member Ide Belau, a diving photojour-nalist. “Best of all — there weren’t many women diving and now we have a lot of girls diving and there’s always a buddy to go with and that’s the best thing about joining the club.”

Diving trips are naturally a vital aspect of the club. Normally, trips away are held in and around the West Palm

Beach coast. However, they have travelled farther on some occasions. Although diving is obviously at the heart of the club, their activities extend to more than just monthly meet-ings and group trips.

“When we’re not diving we’ll go to the Loggerhead Marine Life Center and lend a hand or support organiza-tions in the Keys,” said Julia Ignacek, SeaDragons orga-nizer. “Overall it’s the cama-raderie and coming together to enjoy diving and marine conservation.”

If money were no object, what career would you like to have right now?

I would be a world traveler and a writer.

What did you do to earn your first regular paycheck?

I was a waitress in high school and was not very good at it.

If you were stuck in an elevator overnight, would you prefer to be with the editor of the Wall Street Journal or the editor of Diary of a Wimpy Kid?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid for sure.

What do you always keep in your refrigerator?

A bottle of white wine and some really good cheese.

Can you change a tire? No, but I wish I could.

What is your greatest pet peeve?

People who don’t look you in the eye when you’re talking to them.

Could you live without today’s technology?

Yes, and it would be a nice quiet life.

Where do you plan to be in 10 years?

I don’t plan that far ahead. But I do plan to be happy.

What do you do when you are especially happy?

I immerse myself in nature.

How do you shake the blues?I relax and meditate.

Do you have a quick busi-ness tip to share?

If you love what you do and are really good at it, there is no competition. VV

American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)

The alligator is Florida’s official state reptile.Colloquially known as the gator, it is also the University of Florida’s mascot. This prehistoric creature is more than 150 million years old. Once an endangered species, it is now thriving. Actually, Florida holds a yearly statewide alligator harvest.

The wetlands are vital to this apex predator. In these ecosystems, the cunning and patient alligator is instrumental in the population control of other animals. Prey includes anything living in the water or coming to the water to drink. The adult alligator also hunts on land. Animals such as boars, deer and livestock are vulnerable. Regrettably, in rare instances, pets and humans are at risk.

On a hot summer day, this ectothermic (cold-blooded) reptile basks with its mouth open—a cooling mechanism. Even when it appears at rest, it should never be disturbed. it has the strength to lunge at its prey or run up to 20 mph for short distances. It moves rapidly in the water but sometimes deceives its victim by slowly approaching like a floating log. Obviously, the alligator should not be fed or agitated. VV

What do the letters mean?

Association Living By Frank Kneiser

CMCA, AMS, PCAM

Often we see a series of letters after a person’s name. They may be on a business card or after a signature. These are known as professional designations. This usually mean the per-son has received specialized training in his or her respec-tive occupation. Some of the more common ones we see include MD for medical doctor, CPA - certified public accountant, CLU – Certified Life Underwriter, Ph.D. – Doctor of Philosphy.

Occasionally, you will see more than one professional designation after a name, as in my byline. You may have seen one or more of these after your community association manager’s name. Because these are not some of the more familiar desig-

nations, possibly you have wondered what they mean. The Community Association Institute (CAI) awards these designations. CAI is the largest and most recognized professional organization for community association

managers and volunteers. The community I manage, Suntree, maintains member-ships for board members.

The first designation at-tained by managers is CMCA or Certified Manager of Community Associations. This requires 16 hours of classroom training and pass-ing an exam on the course. Once completed, a final exam is administered to determine proficiency.

The next level is AMS or Association Management Specialist. The prerequisite is two years verified experience in financial, administrative and facilities management. This involves two separate 16-hour courses with final exams. Then CAI oversees a final CMCA exam.

The pinnacle of commu-nity association manage-ment is PCAM — Professional Community Association Manager. This is the most difficult to obtain and there are only 1,600 PCAMs nationwide. Completion of six industry related courses, which are each 16 hours, is part of the process. A 12-page application is graded on substantiated CAI and com-munity involvement as well as professional experience. The final qualification is the case study. This involves 16 hours of classroom study and a physical inspection of a community association that has a variety of operational, maintenance, and adminis-tration issues. The candidate then receives 12 multi- faceted questions about the

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Viera High School Army JROTC program competed in its first JROTC Raider competi-tion for the 2011-2012 school year. The com-petition was held at Viera with schools from Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Rockledge, Merritt Island, Astronaut and Heritage participating.

Overall, Viera’s male and female teams performed well.

The Viera Male Team 1 Raiders for this competition were: Josh Bronzell, Paul Cepeda, John Dockery andrew Haddad, Cody Herrington, Mark Miller, Colton Newton and Damian Soto. As a team, they landed two first-place trophies in the cross country and rope bridge events. They received two second-place trophies for the physical fitness test and team two-mile run. Overall, the Viera Male Team 1 Raiders placed second, while individually, Mark

Miller placed second for the physical fitness test.

The Male Team 2 Raiders were: James Herrington, Wyatt Howard, Alec Kennedy, Michael Laabs, Antonio Maldonado, Valentin Maldonado, Tommy McIntyre and Levy Thomas. This was the first competition for the

young team that placed a remarkable third in the rope bridge event.

This was the first Raider Meet whereViera High School entered an all female Raider Team. Team members includ-ed: Logan Bagwell, Kirsten Chiles, Nikki Clark, Jenn Fleming, Mikaela Keaton,

Katherine Rodrigues and Kaylynn Webster. The young women came in third place for the physical fitness test, cross country rescue and rope bridge events. These results are sensational for a team that didn’t exist prior to this meet.

The outstanding weather as well as the Viera Hawk Army JROTC Booster Club support, added to the tro-phies and camaraderie made the day even more enjoyable.

start, the Viera High football team has hit a rough patch. The Hawks have lost four in a row, including a critical loss at Port St. Lucie that dropped them to 0-2 in district play.

However, that doesn’t mean the Hawks can’t have a special year — especially with their final three regular-season games all at home.

Closing out the month of October with a game against Melbourne Central Catholic, Viera will host Martin County on Nov. 4 in their final district game and then close out the regular season on Thursday, Nov. 10 against Titusville.

Should the Hawks (3-4) beat Martin County, it would create a three-way tie between Viera, Martin County and Port St. Lucie for the second playoff spot. In that case, the three teams would meet in a tie-breaker to decide who goes to the playoffs.

“That would be a great goal,” Hawks coach Kevin Mays said about a possible postseason berth. “I keep telling the boys to keep their

History still on the line for Viera football

heads up. (Winning) three games is the best season they’ve ever had. To move forward, to win more games … that would be a great thing to send these seniors off. They’ve had a rough time here at Viera. It would be nice to send them off being able to get to the playoffs.”

Even if the Hawks don’t reach the postseason, they need just one more victory to set a new school record for wins in a year. That would also establish a foundation of the Viera program for future teams to build on.

In addition to Senior Night (Viera has 24 seniors this season), the Nov. 10 game against Titusville will also feature a halftime salute to military veterans. All local veterans are encouraged to attend the game and receive recognition. VV

The Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Viera has opened its expanded services, which include specialty clinics like optometry, cardiology, ear nose and throat and much more.

“They’ve got everything now,” said veteran Ron Howard of Suntree.

The new 30,000- square-foot clinic space is home to Saturn Team, which includes prosthet-ics and physical therapy to

meet the needs of injured veterans returning from deployment. Saturn Team moved into the new space from the main clinic, al-lowing the primary care, mental health, health care for homeless veterans, compensation and pension departments to expand into the vacated space.

The expansion has al-lowed the team to provide services that are more efficient to 450 veterans per day, according to V.A. spokesperson Courtney Franchio.

The clinic now has 210 exam rooms, up from the original 130. This allows doctors and other health professionals to go from patient to patient, rather than having to shuttle pa-tients from room to room.

The VA Clinic, located on Veterans Way, just off Stadium Parkway in Viera, already had legions of fans.

“It’s phenomenal, I was treated there three times. I was so impressed with their level of care, I decided to start volunteering,” said Howard, an injured veteran who served from 1968 to 1971 in the Marines.

Howard has served in many volunteer posts and now works Wednesday mornings in the physical therapy department, pre-paring heat packs, helping move patients, and doing whatever it takes to offer comfort.

“I talk to a lot of friends from throughout the United States and you hear horror stories from all over about medical clinics for veterans,” Howard said.

“Our clinic has the most caring people in the V.A. system. They’ll bend over backwards to help you. One doctor called me on a Sunday to ask me about my medications. Where are you going to find a doctor like that?”

The V.A. Clinic has be-come a popular spot for volunteers, many are veter-ans like Howard.

“I go there because it’s fun, but also because I want to help other veterans,” Howard said. “Plus, they laugh at my jokes, and you just can’t beat that.”

For more information, call the clinic at 321-637-3788. VV

Greg Ellingson

Broker/Owner

“We promise to never forget YOUR needs are our

primary concern in any real estate transaction.”

We are “the difference that makes the difference.”

In today’s real estate market, business expertise from your professional advisor CANNOT be compromised.

As the Broker/Owner of Ellingson Properties, I am extremely proud to lead a team of true real estate professionals. My prior experience while attending the Air Force Academy, being a leader on the football field, and serving proudly as a military officer, taught me that cutting corners as a business owner is never an option that leads to success.

Through honesty, integrity and hard work our team solves challenges. We believe that when the focus remains on service and being indispensable to our customers, we cannot fail. We define ourselves by the successful outcomes we repeatedly create for our clients.

The Ellingson Properties motto isn’t just another cliché statement. Everyone on the team is committed to establishing and maintaining long term relationships with our clients by providing exceptional service with exceptional results. This business is all about being an advocate for our clients. We have created a company that positively influences the lives of those around us and in our community. We are advocates for our clients!
