WHO AM I AND WHY I WILL TALK ABOUTVIDEOCONFERENCES IN SCHOOLS?
• A TEACHER MENTOR IN PRIMARY SCHOOL HORVATI, ZAGREB
• AN ICT TEACHER AND A CHESS TRAINER• PRIMARY SCHOOL HORVATI IS ONE OF THE
OLDEST PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ZAGREB
From the outside we seem like a small and old school, but we are very big and modern from the inside because our students take part in various activities and interest groups, one of them being international videoconferences. We are very opened to the world because we thought it is very important for students to be students of the world.
WHAT IS A VIDEOCONFERENCE /VC/?
• for people who are thousands of kilometres far away from eachother to have meetings or teachings at the same moment
• students can see or hear eachother and communicate that way in real time with the use of videocameras, monitors or projectors, microphones and speakers
• VCs are used in all areas • One of the most important areas in which it has more
and more important role is the area of education.
/from www.carnet.hr/
• no need for travelling• no additional expenses• there is visual communication• lots of ideas and knowledge• involvement in mutual projects• developement of communication skills• developement of organizational skills• simple access to knowledge• meeting other students, countries and cultures• gaining long-term friendships
ALL OF THIS THINGS ARE VERY IMPORTANT.
WHY VIDEOCONFERENCES IN SCHOOL?
• A PARTNER SCHOOL
• A COMPUTER (WEB CAMERA, MICROPHONE,
SPEAKERS)
• INTERNET ACCESS
• SKYPE, MSN…
• POLYCOM STATION (THE BEST OPTION)
and of course…
• INTERESTED STUDENTS!
WHAT DO WE NEED TO MAKE A VC?
PARTNER SCHOOLS AND HOW CAN YOU FIND THEM?
• BE ONLINE
USE: • SKYPE• FACEBOOK• TWITTER• MSN• eTwinning• ePals• Global Gateway
www.schoolvideoconferences.grouply.com/
TEACHERS AND STUDENTS NEED TO BE WELL PREPARED FOR EVERY VC. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
• TO CHOOSE A THEME OF A VIDEOCONFERENCE(EXAMPLES: NEW YEAR IN OUR COUNTRY,WORLD WATER DAY, OUR SCHOOL…)
• A TEACHER NEEDS TO PREPARE A DETAILEDCOURSE OF A VIDEOCONFERENCE (I will show you a couple of examples at the end)
• IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE A TEST A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE, SO WE COULD BE CERTAIN THAT ON THE DAY OF THE VIDEOCONFERENCE INTERNET CONNECTION WOULD BE FINE

DURATION: 2009/2010. 7 VIDEOCONFERENCES
Videoconferences had 2 main goals :
•To improve English language skills of both classes.•To discover and learn about Croatian and French cultures, and specially life of a foreign child.
Video conferences mainlines :•Link 2 classes of 21 pupils.•Last 30-45 minutes every month (until June 2010).•Follow a precisely prepared script.•Contain repeated rituals.•Focus on a specific theme/issue, different each time.•Students need to work hard on the preparations.
After great cooperation we continue this school year in the aspect of eTwinning project Europe
through Videoconferences, which is lead by me, together with 30 schools from Europe.
Students in France during the videoconference……
• to connect students of as much of the world schools as possible through videoconferences
• to meet countries all over the world and it´s pupils on this new
and contemporary way and by doing it to improve their communication on English and their speaking skills in general
• to learn about school systems of other countries
• about everyday life of students in different countries who are at the same age as ours
• about the culture itself of the countires we are cooperating with
EUROPE THROUGH VIDEOCONFERENCES
The videoconference itself and talking „live“ is an extraordinary event for the children.
Our experience tells us that it leads to even stronger connection between pupils from both sides of the wire.
It often leads to mutual projects, visits and even years-long friendships after pupils have already left the school.
Only with the use of IC technology we can accomplish all of the above mentioned goals without the expences for travel and accomodation.

-How old are you?
-Do you have a brother or a sister?
-Do you have a pet?
-Who is your favorite actor?
-Note: VC lasted longer than predicted because students were in the mood for talk!!
AFTER THE VIDEOCONFERENCE AMERICAN STUDENTS HAD EXPRESSED A WISH TO SHARE THEIR IMPRESSIONS WITH US, SO THEIR TEACHER MRS. LANE DUSSAULT MADE A BLOG.
Students continued their cooperation. Here are some of the comments:
I think it is important for us to learn about other countries because it is always good to have some knowledge on other places other than your country. There are a few things i would like to learn about Croatia. For example, I would like to
learn what their city looks like on a regular day, and what they usually do during a regular school day.

I enjoyed video conferencing because I was able to see my pen pal face-to-
face. Also, I learned some of the things that she likes that I didn't know
through our emails. Overall, I enjoyed the video conference and I thought
that it was an interesting experience. I hope we conference again soon!

We had a wonderful opportunity to Skype with each other (Los Angeles to Zagreb). What a great opportunity to be able to talk face-to-face with a
country on the other side of the world

I think that our skype was SO much fun!! I hope we can do it many more
times. I think that we have a lot in common like what we eat, what
singers we like, and what clothes we wear. I will send some more emails to Nejla and I hope she
sends some back. Primary School Horvati is so cool! Greetings from
California!Natalie M.

During our discussions we got an idea to send the mascot of our school to Los Angeles. That is what we did and American students took our Zagi to New York, Las Vegas…Everything is possible with videoconferences…

- portal ePals- students were exchanging their e-mails- the great security which students have on ePals- VC was extremely successful and our cooperation is still going on
- A result of the cooperation was a call from Mrs. Maureen LaCroix, Superintendent of Schools Bedford Public Schools, who invited me through Skype to answer several questions during the special ceremony of the beginning of a school year (Opening Day in Bedford) about using technology in education in front of 400 guests, which was a great honor.

In Croatia:
One of the videoconferences was held for the opening of a new multimedial center school inHong Kong.

Each year we are involved in the competition This is our time. This year was the first time we were actively involved through videoconferences.
We had two VCs with Lord Elgrin from Canada.Students of the 8th grade were involved.
Because of the time difference VCs were held in 2 and 3 a.m. Students were very excited because of it!
I have tried to show you some of the videoconferences we had. For future videoconferences I made a website SchoolVideoconferences.

So, this is it. I hope you had a good time during this meeting, and also if you are interested about some other videoconference just let me know! For the end I would just like to say a few words…
