VIDEOBLOGGING at MNN Introdution: What is Vlogging or Videoblogging? Videoblogging is a new way to publish, distribute, and archive your videos. A videoblog, or vlog, is a kind of website whose entries consist primarily of video clips that can be downloaded and viewed immediately or transferred to a portable player like the video iPod. Why is it so cool? In addition to putting your videos on cable TV, you can now post them to the web. This means that anyone on the planet can watch your work. You can now email people links to your videos. People can watch them “on demand.” They can also comment directly to you after they watch. All your videos will be archived so you can build up a body of work. By the end of this class you will: 1. Make a blog 2. Get a free video hosting account 3. Learn to compress your videos 4. Post a video to your blog You can then follow these same instructions on your own or downstairs on the 2nd floor at MNN. Remember that the only way you will master these techniques is to DO IT. BIG NOTE: Videoblogging is not to let you upload your 30/60-minute cable TV shows. That will come later. Videoblogging is for SHORT videos. Worldwide distribution: With public access television, your work can only be seen by people in your local community on specific channels and at certain times. Videoblogging, on the other hand, broadens your audience by allowing people anywhere in the world to view your videos at anytime through the World Wide Web. Commenting: People can also comment directly on your video after they watch. You will be able to respond directly to them through email. In this way, you can create a conversation on issues. You can build a fan base. Archiving: All your videos will be archived so you can build up a body of work. If you do it correctly, your uploaded videos will live on the web for years to come. Over time, your work will continue to be accessible to the public. But what does a videoblog look like? You’ll notice that videoblogging is not like TV. Your attention will be shorter, you’ll want to skim more, you’ll want short content more than longer videos.

STEP 2: Compress your videoTo add a video to the web, you must first compress it. To compress a video means to digitally encode it in sucha way as to take up less storage space and transmission bandwidth on a web server. This allows your videos toopen faster and play better.

The video should be relatively short (under 10 minutes). If not, it will take too much time for the viewer todownload even on high speed internet. Also, people do not want to sit and watch a 30-minute show on theircomputer. It's much better to split your work into sections. Shorter is better.

Add a title, any text you want people to see, and find the video on yourcomputer. Choose to cross-post to your Blogger blog.
