About SCL SCL is an Engineering firm, which provides structural and civil engineering services and

consulting world-wide.

The Company, based in Milan, was founded in 1992 by Eng. Stefano Calzolari and Eng.

Silvano Lacavalla; Eng. Stefano Sesana joined the company in 1997.

The organization chart of SCL refers to a team of collaborators (21) -mainly structural

Areas of competence

Civil structures

The analysis and the understanding of the Client’s needs, the technical skills and the

flexibility in finding solutions drive SCL on the process from the concept to the

finalization of a project. The Client is always supported by a creative design, innovative

and adapted both to functional and architectural needs.

The knowledge achieved working with market leader construction companies, the

professional activities "in the field", the participation in the organizations and entities

responsible for the development of technical regulations in the various fields of the

structural engineering, are the basis for the comprehensive and multidisciplinary

understanding of the building process and of the main issues of complex construction

works made of steel, concrete, wood and other materials, in almost all areas of civil and

industrial engineering.

Relying on established partnerships, SCL is also able to develop plant and functional

projects and to provide specialized advice in different areas of design and construction

process, with the possibility of providing a complete "turnkey" design, including all the

information necessary to complete the construction work.

Thanks to the experience gained in the work planning, in the coordination between

different activities, in the interface between Companies and Professionals and in the

organization of the construction site, SCL performs general and specialized supervision

of construction works.

Industrial structures

SCL designs civil works, facilities and equipment of industrial plants in collaboration with

leading engineering Companies in Italy and abroad. Thanks to the skills acquired

through experience on processes and equipment design, SCL provides effective

interaction with all parties involved.

The mechanical design of the plant and of the equipment – from the "on the field"

study of the layout to the detail design – has been recently developed in the fields of

gas and fume treatment in various industrial sectors. Relevant experience has been

achieved in the areas of energy, steel and cement production and in the chemical

Industry.

Also in this area of competence the deep knowledge of the International Norms is an

important added value for customers working at a global level.

Logistics

SCL has been operating for more than twenty years in the research and design of the

structures and systems in the logistics industry.

The wide-range of skills and experience in this specific field, have also been developed

especially thanks to constant research and participation in the formulation of the

technical regulations.

The professional activity is carried out in collaboration with the major companies

operating in various areas of logistics and distribution, including manufacturers of

industrial racks and shelving, suppliers of automation systems, or companies where

logistics plays a relevant role.

In 2014 SCL created, within its organization, SCL-Log a specific section, which heads the

activities within the facilities for logistics. More info at www.scl-log.it.

Inspections, tests and expertise

Inspections, tests and technical expertise play a relevant role among the activities of

SCL.

Static testing on construction works

SCL has extensive experience in the operations of static testing and commissioning of

the works in Italy according to the 1086/71 in the field of civil and industrial steel and

concrete constructions, shelving and industrial warehouses.

Technical and administrative inspections and approvals

SCL operates in the area of technical and administrative inspections and approvals,

which regulates the official approvals of public works, carrying out legal functions within

the inspection and approval committees, according to the requirements of the Italian

statutory regulations.

Legal and technical expertise

The experience achieved in various fields of engineering, as well as the knowledge

acquired at the level of legislative and statutory framework, provides to SCL the

theoretical and applicative basis to accomplish complex forensic and extra-judicial

technical advice and expertise.

Stress Analysis

Stress analysis is a tool used to solve complex problems and to perform advanced

investigations, when required, for specific optimization needs.

For many years, we have approached this type of integrated analysis, mainly for steel

structures, equipment and components. The main used programs are HSH Straus7 and

Autodesk Robot Analysis.

VALENTINO: Flagship Store – 39 Old Bond Street, London

Client: Valentino S.p.A.

Architectural Design: David Chipperfield Architects

Project surface: ca 545 sq. m (net), 331 of which dedicated to sales

Year: 2015-2016

Area of competence: Civil-Commercial

Aim of the project: The project involves the complete renovation of

the building (5 floors above ground and a

basement) and a completely renovated

distribution and structural system.

By SCL: Executive Design and direction of all the structural

works. The structure of the building has been

completely redone, creating the new floors and

columns within the existing steel building (“box in

the box”). The demolitions of existing floors and

central pillar occurred after completing the new

structure. The architectural project has also

featured the demolition of the r.c. existing scale

and of the lift and the construction, in a different

location, of both the lift and the new steel

staircase. The project foresees the partial

remaking of the roof, now temporarily supporting

a technical volume, and the remaking of the

façade on Old Bond Street.

VALENTINO: Boutique show room - Rue Saint Honoré, Paris

Client: Valentino S.p.A.

Architectural Design: David Chipperfield Architects

Project surface: Almost 1000 m2 overall. In detail: 335 dedicated to

the shop and 662 to showroom and offices.

Year: 2015-16

Area of competence: Civil-Commercial

Aim of the project: While keeping the shop active on ground and first

floor, works are meant to convert the second floor

into shopping area, the third floor into offices and

the fourth, fifth and sixth floor into showroom.

By SCL: Executive Design and Works Management of the

structural works (r.c., steel and masonry).

Most notable activities involve the creation of the

new, indoor, circular staircase between first and

second floor and the considerable openings in the

existing masonry floors from 2 to 6.

All the structural and building renovations were

completed in just four months.

second floor of a historic masonry building in

Rome's old city centre.

By SCL: Executive Design and Works Management of all

structural works (steel and reinforced concrete) by

law 1086. Work completed in four months.

Most notable structural works include:

- 3 monumental stone staircases.

- a major double-height atrium upon demolition

of floors portions and addition of two steel

frames (including a double-height one) in order to

grant full support to upper floors.

- Additional support to existing crawl spaces and

opening of many compartments into bearing wall

alignments.

VALENTINO: Offices – Piazza Mignanelli , Roma

Client: Valentino S.p.A.

Architectural Design: David Chipperfield Architects

Year: 2015

Area of competence: Civile-Commercial

Aim of the project: Partial renovation due to the new destination of

some of the rooms at 2nd and 3rd floor of the

sixteenth century Mignanelli building in the

historical center of Roma.

Attività SCL: Executive Design and Works Management of all

structural works (r.c., steel and masonry). The very

delicate structural works, in order to strengthen

the existent slab preserving the fine frescoes and

antique decorations, has been realized from the

top transforming the original wooden or steel

sections in new mixed wood/steel section or in

composed steel sections. To complete the

strengthening work in all the rooms a new 5/6 cm

structural hood in lightened concrete well

anchored to the boundary walls has been placed.

clock (1.2 m diameter) built on the facade.

By SCL: Executive design and direction of works for the

monumental staircase, which features a double

cantilever walkway on 6.0 m and 3.5 m spans.

The most notable engineering techniques adopted

in this project were meant to find worthy

solutions for:

- Mobility of single steel elements pre-
