3. Chassis Vibration Isolators – Vibration isolators are in-tegral to the chassis support rails to help minimize noise and vibration transmission resulting in a quiet occupied space.

4. Compressors – High efficiency rotary and scroll, available with optional mass plate and/or compressor blanket for quiet operation (unit sizes 021-036).

5. Motor/Blower Assembly – PSC standard fan motor and housing is removable and slides out through the front of the cabinet. Optional ECM motor available in unit sizes 021-036.

ECM 2.3 motor is programmed to make soft starts and stops to reduce stress transmitted to the fan housing. They adjust their speed and torque to deliver constant airflow over a wide range of external static pressure.

6. Supply Air Plenum – allows for multiple discharge air configurations. Supply air diffuser 1/2" foam seal field-furnished and installed.

7. Microtech III Control System – Open Choices™ feature allows standalone or easy, low cost network integration using LonWorks® or BACnet® communications.

9. Primary Condensate Drain Pan – is sloped and con-structed of a corrosion resistant ABS plastic. The primary drain pan sits below the air coil to capture all condensate in cooling mode. A factory installed condensate overflow sen-sor disables unit operation when the condensate level reaches the sensor.

10. Secondary IAQ Condensate Drain Pan – Available in an optional corrosion resistant stainless steel or a stan-dard galvanized steel and sits below the chassis to prevent condensate or other liquids from dripping into the cabinet and possibly reaching the living space. This drain pan also includes a factory installed condensate overflow sensor.

11. Condensate Drain Hose IAQ J-Trap – Formed, flexible condensate trap helps keep condensate gases from backing up into the occupied space.

Control Options – Control Choices and Added Functionality

Control Description Application Protocol

The MicroTech III unit controller is a standalone microprocessor-based control board conveniently located in the unit control box for accessibil-ity. The board is designed to provide standalone control of a Water Source Heat Pump using a wall thermostat or a wall mounted temperature sen-sor. Each unit controller is factory programmed, wired, and tested. For added functionality an optional I/O expansion module interconnects to the MicroTech III controller for complete control and operation of your McQuay water source heat pump.

The I/O Expansion Module is an exten-sion of the Microtech III unit controller and provides additional functionality. It is required on all units with an LED annunciator and provides operation of the boilerless electric heat feature.

The MicroTech III unit controller can accept a plug-in LonWorks commu-nication module to provide network communications and added functional-ity to easily integrate with an existing BAS. The communication module can be factory- or field-installed and is tested with all logic required to monitor and control the unit.

The control box is accessible through the left or right end corner panel. It houses the major operating electrical controls including the MicroTech® III unit controller, transformer, compressor relay and fan relay. Each component is easily accessed for service or replacement.

Four unique control choices are offered with the Micro-Tech III unit controller:

■ Standalone operation using a MicroTech III unit controller

■ MicroTech III unit controller with I/O Expansion module

■ MicroTech III unit controller with a LonWorks® commu-nication module

■ MicroTech III unit controller with a BACnet® communica-tion module

Each option features direct quick-connect wiring to all unit-controlled components for “clean” wiring inside the control box. Each control circuit board receives power from a 50 VA transformer.

The MicroTech III Unit Controller is a microprocessor-based control board conveniently located in the unit control box for easy access through a removable access panel. The standalone unit controller is a hard wired interface and pro-vides all the necessary field connections. The board can be wired for 24-volt AC output to the wall thermostat by using terminals R & C. An LED annunciator is located on the front corner of the unit chassis to quickly check the operating status of the unit.

MicroTech III Operating FeaturesAssumes cycle fan operation-not continuous fan operation:

■ Start-up – The unit will not operate until all the inputs and safety controls are checked for normal conditions.

■ Cooling mode – On a call for cooling, the compressor and fan will start 0 to 30 seconds later. When the load is satisfied, the compressor and fan shut off.

■ Heating Mode – On a call for heating, the reversing valve is energized after 60 seconds and the compressor and fan start. When the load is satisfied, the compressor and fan shut off. The reversing valve is de-energized 60 seconds later.

■ Short Cycle Protection & Random Start – Each time the compressor stops, a new random compressor start-delay time between 180 and 240 seconds is generated. This prevents compressor short cycling and prevents units from starting simultaneously after coming back from an unoccupied cycle.

■ Unoccupied Mode – A simple “grounded” signal between terminals U and C (no power source required), puts the unit into the unoccupied mode for night setback operation.

■ Override Mode – A switch on the deluxe automatic changeover thermostat can be activated during the unoc-cupied mode to put the unit back into the occupied mode for two hours for after-hours heating or cooling.

■ Motorized Valve/Pump Restart – The IV/PR (H8) ter-minals on the The MicroTech III unit controller are used to energize (open) a motorized valve or start a water pump to get water circulating prior to starting the compressor on call for heating or cooling. The IV/PR (H8) terminal may be “daisy chained” between 200 units.

■ Brownout Protection – The MicroTech III unit controller measures the input voltage and will suspend compressor and fan operation if the voltage falls below 80% of the unit nameplate rated value. A unique LED status is gen-erated and an output is available to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

■ Unit Shutdown – A simple grounded signal puts the unit into the shutdown mode. Compressor and fan operations are suspended. A unique LED status is generated and an output signal is made available for connection to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

Control Features – MicroTech® III Unit Controller

■ Condensate Overflow Protection – The MicroTech III unit controller incorporates a liquid sensor at the top of the drain pan. Upon sensing water flow, cooling operation is suspended. A unique LED status is generated and output is available to a “fault” LED at the thermostat. Heating operation is not suspended.

■ Remote Reset of Automatic Lockouts – The Remote Re-set feature provides the means to remotely reset automatic lockouts generated by high-pressure and/or low-tempera-ture faults. When the MicroTech III unit controller is in automatic lockout due to one of these faults, and the cause of the fault condition has been alleviated, energizing the O-terminal for 10 seconds or more will force the control board to clear the lockout. A unit power cycle can also be used to clear an automatic lockout if the conditions causing the fault have been alleviated.

■ Intelligent Reset – The Fault Retry feature helps to minimize nuisance trips of automatic lockouts caused by high-pressure and/or low-temperature faults. This feature clears faults the first two times they occur within a 24-hour period and triggers an automatic lockout on the 3rd fault. The retry count is reset to zero every 24 hours.

■ Equipment Protection Control – The MicroTech III unit controller receives separate input signals from the refrigerant high-pressure switch and the low suction line temperature sensor. In a high-pressure situation, compres-sor operation is suspended. In a low temperature situation, the unit goes into a defrost cycle where the unit is put into cooling operation for 60 seconds until the coaxial heat exchanger is free of ice. Each switch generates its own unique LED status and output is available to a “fault” LED at the thermostat if either situation exists.

Note: Most unit fault conditions are the result of operating the equipment outside the unit specifications.

MicroTech III Unit Controller with LonWorks or BACnet Communica-tion Module

Each McQuay Vertical Stack Water Source Heat Pump can be equipped with a LonWorks or BACnet communi-cation module. The LonWorks module is LonMark 3.4 certified and designed to communicate over a LonWorks communications network to a Building Automation System (BAS). The BACnet module is designed to communicate over a BACnet MS/TP communications network to a build-ing automation system. Both controllers are microproces-sor-based and can be factory or field-installed.

The control modules are programmed and tested with all the logic required to monitor and control the unit. Optional wall sensors may be used with the communication mod-ules to provide limited local control of the Vertical Stack Water Source Heat Pump. The MicroTech III unit controller monitors water and air temperatures and passes information to the communication module. The module communicates with the BAS, to provide network control of the Water Source Heat Pump.

Installation and Application Information

Receiving and StorageUpon receipt of the equipment, check the carton and pal-lets for visible damage. Make a notation on the shipper’s delivery ticket before signing. If there is any evidence of rough handling, immediately open the cartons to check for concealed damage. If any damage is found, notify the carrier within 48 hours to establish your claim and request their inspection and a report. The Warranty Claims Depart-ment should then be contacted.

Applications – Unit Selection

Achieving optimal performance with water source heat pump systems requires both accurate system design and proper equipment selection. Use a building load program to determine the heating and cooling loads of each zone prior to making equipment selections. With this information, the McQuay SelectTools™ software selection program for Water Source Heat Pumps can be used to provide fast, ac-curate and complete selections of all McQuay water source heat pump products. SelectTools software is available by contacting your local McQuay Representative.

While we recommend that you use McQuay SelectTools software for all unit selections, manual selections can be accomplished using the same zone load information and the capacity tables available in this catalog.

Boiler / Tower Application Manual Selections:

The following example illustrates a typical selection for a zone in a boiler/tower system for a commercial building.

A building load program determines that this zone needs 13,400 BTUH of total cooling, 10,930 BTUH of sensible cooling and 16,150 BTUH of total heating. The water tem-peratures for the boiler/tower system are 90ºF for cooling and 70ºF for heating. The return air temperature is 80ºF dry bulb with 67ºF wet bulb for cooling and 70ºF for heating.

Zone requirements: Total Cooling Load = 13,400 BTUH Sensible Cooling Load = 10,930 BTUH Total Heating Load = 16,150 BTUH Air Flow Required = 410 CFM Return Air Cooling = 80ºFDB/ 67ºFWB Return Air - Heating = 70ºFDB

Since a McQuay Model VHC 012 produces approxi-

mately 12,000 BTUH of cooling, it is not sufficient for this zone and a model VHC 015 should be considered. Model VHC is chosen because it is specifically designed for a boiler/tower application. Typical water flow rate for boiler/tower applications is 2.5 GPM per ton and in this example no antifreeze is used.

ECM 2.3 motor is programmed to make soft starts and stops to reduce stress transmitted to the fan housing. They adjust their speed and torque to deliver constant airflow over a wide range of external static pressure.

Wireless Temperature Control (T9000)

The T9000 Wireless Temperature Control is designed to provide precision temperature control without the installa-tion labor and expense of wiring. • Powered by AA batteries• Mounts in any suitable location that will provide

good temperature control. • Large LCD display provides the user with

current room temperature, set point temperature, time, program interval, and other system status information.

The second part of the T9000 system is called a Remote Control Node or “RCN”. An RCN interfaces with specific desired HVAC equipment, and communicates with its ther-mostat using unlicensed 900 MHz, radio frequency energy. Shut off Ball Valve

Motorized Valve Used for variable pumping applications, the valve is

wired in the compressor circuit and piped in the return wa-ter line from the unit. It opens when the compressor is on and closes when the compressor is off. The valve is rated for 300 psig (2070 kPa).

Supply and Return Water Hoses Available as fire rated construction in lengths of 30".

Fire rated hoses have a synthetic polymer core with an outer rated covering of stainless steel. Fittings are steel. As-sembly is “fire rated” and tested according to UL 94 with a VO rating and ASTM 84. Each hose has MPT connections. Fire rated hoses have a swivel connection at one end. Hoses are available in 1/2" (13 mm) to match the FPT fittings on unit sizes 009-018 and 3/4" (19 mm) to match the FPT fit-tings on unit sizes 021-036.

GeneralUnits shall be supplied completely factory assembled, piped, internally wired, fully charged with [HFC 410-A (sizes 009-

036)] and capable of operation with an entering water temperature range from [55° to 110° on models VHC] [25° to 110° (-6.7° to 49°) on models VHW]. All equipment must be rated and certified in accordance with ARI/ISO 13256-1, UL, ULC and have correct ARI/ISO and ULC labels mounted on side of the cabinets. Each unit shall be fully run-tested at the factory. The installing contractor shall be responsible for furnishing and installing McQuay water source heat pumps as indicated on the plans.

CabinetThe cabinet shall be fabricated from heavy gauge galvanized sheet metal with interior surfaces lined with 1/2 inch thick,

1-1/2 lb. [coated glass fiber insulation] or [closed-cell non-fibrous insulation]. The insulation shall have a flame spread of less than 25 and a smoke developed classification of less than 50 per ASTM E-84 and UL 723. All fiberglass insulation shall be coated and have exposed edges tucked under flanges to prevent the introduction of glass fibers into the air stream. All insulation must meet NFPA 90A and UL-181.

Cabinet shall be constructed as a two-piece (top discharge plenum/lower chassis cabinet) design to help facilitate installation when moving into tight spaces. The cabinet must be able to be broken down into two pieces. The supply air plenum shall be fully insulated and designed with a supply air baffle to attenuate air noise and provide privacy if the unit is configured with both front and back supply air openings. Welded joints are not acceptable.

Filters● Units shall have a 1" (25mm) thick [throwaway] filter factory-installed as standard. The filter shall be easily re-

moved from the front of the cabinet through the hinged return air panel.

● Unit shall have an optional 2" (51mm) thick [throwaway] filter and factory-installed filter track to accommodate the 2" thick pleated filter. The filter shall be easily removed from the front of the cabinet through the hinged return air panel.

Refrigerant CircuitUnits shall have a sealed refrigerant circuit, which includes a rotary or scroll compressor, a thermostatic expansion valve, an

aluminum fin and rifled copper tube refrigerant-to-air heat exchanger, a reversing valve and a water-to-refrigerant coaxial heat exchanger. The coaxial coils shall be made of [copper] or [cupronickel] and shall be deeply fluted to enhance heat transfer and minimize fouling and scaling. The coil shall have a working pressure of 400 psig on the waterside of the unit, 500 psig on the refrigerant side. The refrigeration circuit must contain safety controls to include, high/low pressure switches and low temperature cut-off sensor. Upon activation of any safety switch or sensor, compressor and fan operation shall be suspended.

Drain PanThe primary condensate pan shall be constructed of high impact (ABS) plastic to prevent corrosion and sweating. The bottom

of the drain pan shall be sloped on two planes to provide complete drainage of water from the pan. Flat bottom drain pans are unacceptable. The unit shall be supplied with a standard solid-state electronic condensate overflow protection. The cabinet must also contain a secondary drain pan constructed of stainless steel to prevent corrosion. The secondary drain pan must include a condensate overflow alarm sensor and a drain trap to prevent gases from backing up into the cabinet. The drain must be connected to the condensate riser. Mechanical float switches will not be accepted.

Fan and Motor Assembly The cabinet shall contain a removable motor/blower assembly. Fan assembly shall have a direct drive motor. The blower

motor shall be either 2-speed PSC type or (optional) ECM with thermal overload protection. The fan housing shall be slide-out type and have a removable orifice ring to facilitate fan motor and fan wheel removal. The fan and motor assembly must be capable of overcoming the external static pressures as shown on the schedule. The fan motor shall be isolated from the housing with rubber isolators to inhibit vibration-induced noise. Airflow (CFM) performance and associated static pressure shall be based on a wet coil.

ChassisThe chassis section incorporates the air coil, coax coil, primary drain pan and refrigeration circuit (compressor compartment),

shall be easy to install and service. The slide-in chassis shall have an insulated compressor compartment to separate it from the fan compartment. Compressors in the air stream are not acceptable. The chassis base shall incorporate formed galvanized slide rails with vibration isolators to prevent vibration transmission to the cabinet. The chassis shall be removable from the cabinet with having to remove the return air grille frame from the wall.

Options: ● Two-way motorized valve – shall be factory installed on the return water line as part of the chassis and used for

variable pumping applications. The valve shall be wired directly to the control board and on a call for heating or cooling, the valve will open allowing full design water flow through the coax coil.

● Auto-Flow Regulator (AFR) – shall be factory installed on the return water line as part of the chassis. The regula-tor shall ensure proper water flow through the coax coil to ensure optimal unit performance.

● Strainer - shall be factory-installed on the supply water line as part of the chassis.

● Compressor sound blanket - shall be factory-installed on the compressor as part of the chassis (sizes 021 to 036).

RisersThe risers shall be design to mount directly to the unit cabinet on any of three sides (Right, Left or Back). Riser mounting

shall be field convertible if they are required on a different side of the cabinet. Standard riser material shall be Type M copper. Fiberglass or closed cell (Rubatex style) insulation on risers is optional. Ball valves shall be provided as standard on both the supply and return riser and be used to shut-off the condenser water loop for service/installation purposes. Copper couplings, riser extensions and reducers shall be provided as field installed accessories.

ElectricalAll electrical connections between the cabinet and chassis shall be made with locking quick-connect connectors. The chassis

shall contain controls for compressor, reversing valve and fan motor operation and shall have a standard 50VA transformer or optional 75VA transformer, circuit breaker in the low voltage circuit, and a terminal block for low voltage field wiring connections. Unit shall be name-plated to accept time delay fuses or HACR circuit breaker for branch over-current protection of the power source. Unit control system shall provide heating or cooling as required by the set points of the wall thermostat. The unit control scheme shall provide for fan operation simultaneous with compressor operation (fan interlock) regardless of the thermostat type. The control system shall be 24vac and provide heating, cooling or continuous fan by a remote mounted thermostat.

Solid-State Control System(Microtech III) – Unit shall have a microprocessor based control system and provide random start, compressor short cycle

protection, grounded signal input (one each) for activation of unoccupied or emergency shutdown modes, LED fault status, optimal two-hour override of the unoccupied mode, brownout protection, condensate overflow protection, remote reset of automatic lockouts, fault retry to minimize nuisance trips, defrost cycle and pump restart relay output.

The control system type shall have an option of, (choose one):

Each unit controller shall have the ability to perform the following unit operations:• Enable heating and cooling to maintain set point based on a room temperature setting.• Enable fan and compressor operation.• Monitor all safety controls and shutdown unit when necessary.• Monitor discharge air temperature.• Monitor leaving water temperature.• Relay status of all vital unit functions.• Support optional control outputs.• Directly control a motorized water valve on a call for heating or cooling.• Automatic intelligent reset. If a fault condition occurs 3 times sequentially and before meeting temperature set-

point, then a lock-out condition requiring manual reset will occur.

The MicroTech III main unit controller shall accept a plug-in LonWorks (LONMark Certified) or BACNet communication module to provide network communications and added functionality to easily integrate with an existing building automation system (BAS). The communication module shall be factory installed onto the main unit controller and shall be tested with all logic required to monitor and control the unit.

Flexible HosesFire-rated flexible hoses with ASTM ratings of Flame Spread 25, Fuel Contribution 25 and Smoke Density 50 for connection

between chassis and cabinet mounted risers. Hose shall be covered with stainless-steel braid. Hose kits shall have brass fittings with stainless-steel ferrules. Hose end shall be solid external NPT, which connects to matting fitting on riser shut-off ball valve and the chassis water lines. The hose kit length shall be adequate enough to allow slight chassis removal from the cabinet for ball valve shut-off and hose removal or replacement. The hose kit shall be rated for 350 psig working pressure.

Return Air GrillesThe field installed return air grilles shall incorporate hinged panel for easy access to filter, power switch and to ease in chassis

removal. The return air grille panel shall be insulated with either sound dampening fiberglass or closed-cell foam (cellular) insulation. The return air grille shall be designed to allow chassis removal without having to remove the return grille door frame from the drywall. The return air grille shall be painted in either Cupola White or Antique Ivory.

DiffusersSupply air diffusers shall be painted (Antique Ivory) steel or anodized aluminum finish. McQuay can custom-paint to match

your requirements. Contact your McQuay sales representative for color choices and options. The following diffuser options are available as a field installed accessory:

Double Deflection – Damper shall have both vertical and horizontal adjustable blades to control the horizontal and vertical direction of airflow into the conditioned space.

Double Deflection with Adjustable Opposed-Blade Balancing Damper – The balancing damper allows the installing contractor or owner the ability to adjust the amount of airflow (CFM) into the conditioned space. This is an ideal option for applications where one vertical stack unit is serving two zones and each zone requires a different amount of airflow.

FiltersFilter kits shall be provided as 1" throwaway type. Filter kits shall be offered in 12 pack cartons for field installation after

the construction period.
