I just got back from the annual meeting, and what a time we had! I want to thank the St. Croix Chapter for the wonderful job they did.

I think one of the biggest events that happened over the weekend was when we provided a panel that discussed hunter recruitment. The panel was made up of four members: Marilyn Vetter; Howard Vincent, President of Pheasants Forever; Dr. Ben Jones from the Ruffed Grouse Society and AJ DeRosa from Project Upland.

These four experts talked about the R3 program, which deals with the future of hunting and conservation by re-cruiting new members to preserve the future of hunting through habitat and restoration efforts.

Matt Kucharski, President of the PR firm Padilla, and Marilyn Vetter led a strategic session during which all present had a chance to brain-storm and provide feed-back toward the development of NAVHDA’s three-year strategic plan.

All of our sponsors had a presence at the meeting, and I’m very pleased with the dedication our members have toward them. Dakota 283 was very generous by donat-ing a percentage of their sales to one of our members to help out with medical bills—when you mention Craig Jones’s name when purchasing a kennel, they will set proceeds aside. Purina Pro Plan was represented by Karl Gunzer, Director of Purina’s Sporting Dog Program, Greg Blair and Terry Petro. Rehan Nana, Outdoor Spon-sorship and Media Coordinator represented Garmin In-ternational. Terry Wilson from Ugly Dog Hunting was there via videophone.

Also present were our conservation partners: Dr. Ben Jones, President of Ruffed Grouse Society, Howard Vin-cent, President of Pheasants Forever, and Rich Wissink, PF’s Vice President of Education and Outreach.

We signed a new agreement with Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever to support the growth of hunting heritage programs and habitat. NAVHDA is proud to support Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever by providing on-the-ground support with bird dog-related events and habitat conservation.

There were several motions brought forward, and you can read the outcomes in our minutes. One of the most important motions brought up had to do with insurance. We are working with our insurance committee and the broker to come up with a solution to help chapters out with their concerns.

In the past we have had regional contacts, and Andy Doak will be asking volunteers to help chapters with is-sues. If you are interested, please contact him. Another request that we saw in our recent survey was chapters needing professional help training dogs. Although not all is ironed out yet, we are working on something and we plan to launch it soon.

NAVHDA is doing well financially, and membership is doing well along with testing.

We had some changes on the board. I would like to welcome Angie Coenen to the Secretary’s position. Steve Greger is now our Director of Information Services. Steve has been working, along with other members, to update our office concerning IT since last year.

HOW IT ALL STARTEDBy John Kegel

About The Cover

I first met Bodo Winterhelt in 1967 and a lasting friendship developed, but it was not until 1968, after I acquired a Pudelpointer from Bodo, that we start-

ed talking about forming a Pudelpointer Club of North America.

During these discussions I learned that Bodo had been involved in Versatile Testing some years ago. Apparent-ly in 1963, the “All Purpose Gun Dog Club of Ontario” was started. This club was affiliated with the Ontario Bird Dog Association, and the membership consisted mainly of field trialers. A friend of Bodo’s, Walter Ko-gut, worked out some testing rules that were a combi-nation of German and North American field trial rules. Field and water work were separate tests held on differ-ent days. The water test was built along retriever lines. Two years later the “All Purpose Gun Dog Club” died.

Two reasons were given for its failure:1. The club’s affiliation with a conventional field trial

organization.2. “All Purpose” was not a good choice of words to

describe the versatility of our dogs.

Bodo was not discouraged. He translated the German test rules, took some ideas from the now defunct “All Purpose Gun Dog Club,” (Forerunner of NAVHDA?) and adapted them to North American hunting require-ments. He had the rules written and printed by his long-time friend Douglas Hume. Without the benefit of a

club, Bodo and Douglas Hume organized the first Natu-ral Ability and Utility tests on Nicholson Island in 1965. These tests were held under rules that were very similar to today’s NAVHDA rules. Even though these two tests in 1965 were successful, no club was formed and the testings were never repeated.

Being new to all this was very exciting for me. I felt at the time that with Bodo’s knowledge and experience, it

should not be too difficult to organize a club with mem-bership coming from hunters rather than field trialers. Bodo agreed. Nevertheless, it took us some time to de-cide whether this club or organization should be strictly a Pudelpointer breed club or a club open to all pointing breeds. After weighing the pros and cons carefully, we settled on an open breed club. We got some “Founding Meeting” cards printed and mailed them to owners of versatile breeds.

On Sunday, May 18, 1969, we met at The Goodwood Club in Goodwood, Ontario. The meeting was to be held at our clubhouse, but as we had only a total of 12 people, we moved over to our house, and the meeting took place in our living room.

In attendance were: • Douglas Hume, a long-time friend of Bodo’s who

had sponsored the first importation of Pudelpoint-ers from Germany.

• George Adolph, also a good friend of Bodo’s who had the reputation of being an excellent dog train-er having once trained a Basset Hound for bird hunting. George was the owner of a well-trained Pudelpointer named Rush.

• Rudi Lorra, another friend of Bodo’s and a Pudel-pointer owner.

• Jerry and Alyson Knap, owner of a GWP (Arda). Jerry at the time was a successful outdoor writer, and Alyson was an excellent dog trainer.

• Phil Desjardine, a long-time Springer man who had just purchased his first Pudelpointer from Bodo.

• Alex Hoenig, an interested GWP owner. • Betty McHugh, owner of a Griffon and well-known

obedience trainer. • Hubert Edney, a first-time Pudelpointer owner. • Bodo Winterhelt, my wife Margaret, and myself.

Bodo opened the meeting by outlining the purpose and objectives of the club.

This was followed by an election of officers: • President - Bodo Winterhelt • Vice President - Rudi Lorra • Secretary-Treasurer - John Kegel

After the election, we had some lively discussions. First on the agenda was the name of the new organization. After heated debate, we settled on the current name “The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Associa-tion.” Another point of discussion was where to get new members. The traditional way of getting the field trial fraternity involved was rejected, and instead, it was sug-gested that we approach owners of hunting dogs that were active hunters.

Bodo volunteered to hold monthly training clinics at his game farm in Orono, Ontario. Future board meet-ings were also scheduled monthly.

The test rules were explained to us by Bodo, and as he was the only one with testing experience, we readi-ly accepted them. Also, a possible fall test (Utility) was discussed.

Once my liquor supply was exhausted, everyone left not knowing that they had started a new movement that soon would expand to the United States and make his-tory in the hunting dog world.

The NAVHDA 50th Anniversary celebration and annual meeting can be summed up in one word, “EPIC!” Everything about the meeting, the

planning, the execution, and good times had by all can only be described by a term whose definition makes you envision grandness... excellence... once–in-a-lifetime.

The St. Croix Chapter came together as a chapter and a well-oiled team to plan and execute their plan with precision and enthusiasm. Members followed through and demonstrated great teamwork during the days leading up to and the entire four days of activities. Many commented on the participation and dedication demonstrated by its members to pull off such an event.

The sheer number of attendees was credit to the level of importance given to the 50th Anniversary of the organization we all love so much. Between the accommodations, expertise of speakers, and the amount

of donations, we could see early on this was going to be a special time.

Many of us talk about the “NAVHDA family,” and that family was together to celebrate 50 years of training, breeding good dogs, bird hunting, and learning. Family was the focus of the Saturday evening banquet with many people freely giving of resources to support the youth program, judges, apprentice judges, members in need, and those that have given so much to the organization that epitomizes the spirit of giving. The 50th celebration film was a focal point of the evening that set the tone for a magical evening of fun and support. This film can be viewed at the NAVHDA site—but be prepared to be moved.

Thank you to all our sponsors and supporters that helped make this one of the most memorable annual meetings. A first-class evening with first-class people celebrating a first-class organization can only be described as EPIC.

CHAPTER RELATIONS

In light of feedback received via the recent mem-ber surveys, the EC has agreed to create a com-mittee to develop a process for welcoming newly sanctioned chapters. This committee will focus on providing new chapters (or existing chapters needing assistance) with guidance on establish-ing the chapter’s organization. This guidance will focus on organization of the chapter, insur-ance, by-laws, training days, etc. The committee will also investigate the re-establishment of a “new chapter clinic” to assist with these issues.

Also related to feedback we received from the member survey, the EC has agreed to pursue a new program where the parent organization will sponsor, in some way, some guidance to chap-ters who need help with training issues. This may include how to organize a training day, as-sistance with training techniques, etc. Note that the program is merely an idea at this point. The Judging and Testing Committee has been given the task to develop this new program.

SUBMITTED BY THE POTOMAC CHAPTER

That NAVHDA endorse and spon-sor the development and publica-tion of a training book consisting of a collation of the best training practices from NAVHDA members.

Presented by Ryan Burke, Potomac Chapter. 2nd Desiree Stormont.

Discussion:• Having NAVHDA sponsor this

may cause liability to NAVH-DA in regard to current or fu-ture sponsors. Training resourc-es should remain at the chapter level or sourced via current means.

• Delegate vote 5 for, 40 opposed.• EC vote on this motion - op-

posed. This motion did not pass.

Note the statement made on page 9 in the Chapter Relations section. The EC is committed to responding to your feedback. While this did not pass, we will consider other options to provide more assistance to chap-ters and members.

SUBMITTED BY THE WISCONSIN RIVER CHAPTER

The Wisconsin River chapter makes a motion that NAVHDA dis-close a copy of the new insurance policy. Additionally, NAVHDA will put together a plan to allow chapters to opt out of NAVHDA’s policy or being required to pay premium, provided proof of insur-ance listing NAVHDA International as an additional insured is provided annually.

Presented by Jacob Zueske Wisconsin River Chapter. 2nd Dave Dulak.• No discussion.• Delegate vote 5 for, 37 opposed, 3 abstentions.

WISCONSIN RIVER THEN PRESENTED AN AMENDED MOTION:

The Wisconsin River Chapter moves to ask NAVHDA to annually provide a current copy of the NAVHDA insurance policy to an officer from each chapter.

Presented by Jacob Zueske, Wisconsin River Chapter. 2nd Bobbi Benson.

Discussion:• Is there currently a NAVHDA point of contact so that chapters

are not contacting our agent or the company individually?• Current protocol - contact the office and they contact agent or

president depending on the question/issue.• Understand that if a chapter were to contact the broker and

say something that could invalidate our policy, it could shut us down immediately.

• It is important that chapters know what is covered by the pol-icy so, if they decide, the chapter can fill any gaps they feel are necessary to be covered.

• Current system - anyone can ask for insurance information from the Central Office - we will provide a policy and/or cer-tificate of coverage.

• Trahan - we are afraid of providing the full policy because we’re afraid of shopping - raising a red flag and having the company drop our coverage.

• The EC has already agreed that we will contact the insurance company to determine what they are comfortable sharing with our general membership.

• Clarification - just proof and the limits or the entire policy? • The motion is asking for the entire policy.• Asking to again, amend the motion to include requirement

that all questions to addressed to the central office only. No action taken on this request.

• Delegate vote 21 for, 21 opposed, 3 abstain.• Motion failed - EC commits that we will do what we can to

get the chapters more detailed information that is still within reason.

AND OK NAVHDA CHAPTERS

Motion to change the NAVHDA Utility Score Card classi-fication for search to a 4 in order to earn a Prize I for the NAVHDA Utility Test.

Presented by Bob Ubbelohde, Missouri Uplands Chapter. 2nd Al Harmeyer.

• No discussion.• Delegate vote 6 for, 38 opposed, 1 abstention.• Keystone Chapter pulled their motion. No

discussion or delegate vote held.Presented again by Ryan Burke, Potomac Chapter. 2nd Bob Ubbelohde.

• No discussion.• Delegate vote 6 for, 38 opposed, 1 abstention.• EC vote on this motion - opposed. This motion did not pass.

SUBMITTED BY THE N. MICHIGAN CHAPTER

Every member (life, renewal, and new) receive a NAVHDA window decal free of charge and mailed out automatically each year.

Presented by Brent Kroll, N. Michigan Chap-ter. 2nd Gary Engebretson.

Discussion:• If the motion is voted down, is there any

chance that the EC explore other op-tions?

• Cost? Estimated $9,078/year, less labor, to the organization.

• Option - when registering have the op-tion on the membership form to request a sticker.

• Opinion - the sticker should only be provided to new members.

• Delegate vote 6 for, 39 opposed, no ab-stentions.

• EC vote on this motion - opposed. This motion did not pass.

Note: subsequent to the delegates meeting the EC presented and passed the following motion: Motion 19-21 - That the EC pro-vide 10 stickers, free of charge, to each sanc-tioned chapter for use as they see fit. This applies to the 2019 calendar year only.

MISCELLANEOUS MOTIONS OR ACTIONS TAKEN BY

THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

• The following Motion (19-18) was discussed and passed by the EC: That the Registry com-mittee develop a policy no later than April 1, 2019, that requires submission of DNA for both Sire and Dam before a litter may be reg-istered with NAVHDA.

** 2/12/2019: The following Amendment to Motion 19-18 has been proposed and will be voted on by the EC within the next few weeks.

• Amended Motion 19-18: The incoming NAVHDA Registrar is charged to identify and offer an evaluation of the pros and cons of a policy that requires submission of DNA for both Sire and Dam before a litter may be registered with NAVHDA.

• Regarding the idea of hiring a professional Executive Director for NAVHDA, the EC dis-cussed and passed the following motion. Mo-tion 19-20 - That within the next 24 months (no later than 2021), the EC will officially re-view the financial stability of the organization and the ability to hire and sustain an Execu-tive Director, who would report to the EC, to lead the Central Office.

• The EC has agreed that the organization’s IT infrastructure needs to be modernized. With this in mind, the EC agreed to move our IT in-frastructure and operations to a cloud-based system. As Director of Information Services, Steve Greger will be leading this effort and will be recruiting several ad hoc committees to assist with the move.

• Motion 19-3 - Rick Holt, 2nd Chip Bonde - That the NAVHDA EC approve the creation of an operating reserve fund to be calculated as 50% of the NAVHDA operating budget. Passed.

During the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Asso-ciation’s 50th anniversary celebration, Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever signed a formal partnership agreement with NAVHDA. As a result of the alliance, NAVHDA will help fund the organization’s Hunting Heritage Pro-gram Manager position, participate together in “Learn-to-Hunt” and bird dog-related events, and help engage more people in habitat conservation and dog training.  “Bird dogs and habitat conservation go together like peanut butter and jelly. We’ve worked with the folks at NAVHDA for decades, and they’ve always under-stood the connection between our habitat mission and successful outings with bird dogs. This new agreement is the natural evolution of two groups who understand they share mutual goals for the future,” explained Rich

Wissink, Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever’s vice pres-ident of education and outreach.

Through the mutually understood connection between hunters buying licenses and funding for wildlife habitat conservation, the new partnership centers around the Hunting Heritage Manager position. This employee serves as Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever’s lead for recruiting, retaining and reactivating hunters through the development of content, organization of events, and cultivation of mentors. In addition, NAVHDA will be providing dog training content for the Pheasants For-ever and Quail Forever websites, will be helping to pro-mote membership in the conservation organization, will be receiving advertising in the organization’s publica-tions, will be exhibiting at National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic, and will be participating in the annual Bird Dogs for Habitat campaign. Bird Dogs for Habitat occurs every April and engages the organization’s online followers in a fundraising campaign centered around a bird dog breed popularity contest. With NAVHDA’s dog-loving membership, the intersection between habi-tat, hunting and bird dogs is natural.

“We are excited to join forces with Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever to support the growth of Hunting Her-itage Programs and Habitat. Hunting dogs hold a special place in our hearts and often open avenues and ways for new hunters to quickly connect to the hunting traditions we cherish. NAVHDA is proud to support Pheasants For-ever & Quail Forever by providing on the ground support with bird dog-related events and habitat conservation,” added David Trahan, NAVHDA’s President.

ON THE RIGHT TRACK

By Mark WhalenPoolesville, Maryland

A group of knowledgeable judges and trainers has been assembled and are available to answer your questions about training and testing. The topic will vary each month based on the questions we receive from our VHD readers. Please send your questions to [email protected] with “On the Right Track” in the subject line.

Question: I have my first Pudelpointer and had an outstanding first season with her this past year. Her performance has been extraordinary in every respect with the only issue being a tendency to chew birds ex-cessively during the retrieving process. She had a lot of retrieving work with bumpers prior to the start of the season but virtually no experience with live birds. As my primary intent this first season was to maximize her exuberance and hunting enthusiasm, and her retriev-ing was otherwise excellent, I was reluctant to take any strong action to correct this matter and intentionally made minimal effort to do so.

If you could address the best means of early stage cor-rection of this problem, it would be most appreciated.

Answer: Thank you for your very interesting question. You didn’t state in your question whether your PP went through a formal force breaking pro-cess. Force breaking, if done properly, will pay div-idends to you and is what separates Prize I UT dogs from all the rest. Take a look at our UT Test and the amount of retrieving that’s required. The field portion requires that all shot birds be retrieved to hand. Then, of course, we have retrieve by drag and the duck re-trieve. During the duck search, if the dog gets the duck in his mouth it must also be retrieved. What I would do with this dog is go through the formal force breaking process. For this article I won’t go into all

the particulars of force breaking, but there are many very good articles in past issues of the VHD regarding force breaking. If you have already gone through the force breaking process, I will address some steps to revisit force breaking and how you can fix munching on game. Before I do that, it would be prudent to touch on a little puppy development which may cor-rect any hard mouth issues before they begin.

I know that lots of people supply puppies with a bunch of toys including Beanie Babies, rawhide, squeaky toys, Nylabones, deer antlers, tennis balls, etc. I pretty much give my puppies Nylabones and that’s about it. Nylabones last a long time and they will satisfy a dog’s desire to chew, that includes pup-pies and old dogs alike. When they get short, I simply throw them in the trash. I do use Beanie Babies, but I only do that for very young puppies, in the hallway at my house to do some play retrieves. I never give them anything like that just to play with at their leisure. I will also never, ever give my puppy anything that squeaks. Squeaky toys will reward the puppy with a sound when they bite down hard, in essence promot-ing a hard mouth.

I believe many of the problems people encounter with force breaking are because they want to move forward and progress too quickly when the dog lacks a real understanding and has a limited foundation. Make sure your dog has a very solid foundation on hold and carry. For your PP, I would revisit hold and carry and progressively move to larger, heavier and more objects with offset weight. Be reasonable, I’m

not saying have your dog carry a 20-pound item. I am saying go to objects that may be six or eight pounds. Some dogs will struggle with this at first, but once they know how to do it, they will gain a tremendous amount of confidence. They will need to be able to hold it, carry it and jump on and off the table with it. As always, praise lavishly. Larger and heavier items inherently limit hard mouth; they will learn to have a firm grip. If they try to munch on it or roll it in their mouth they will drop it, which will warrant an immediate correction of “NO.” The next step would be to introduce birds in the hold and carry stage of force breaking. I start with dead pigeons, and then I go to chukar, ducks and geese. Again, I’m going pro-gressively larger and heavier. I will also use live, taped chukar and ducks. If I see them exhibit any hard mouth behavior on a bird in the hold and carry stage I will correct it with a sharp “NO” along with an in-dex finger tap on their snout. If they continue biting down on the bird I will make them carry a double-sid-ed scrub brush. The brush is uncomfortable and not very conducive to biting down on. Generally they will learn pretty quickly that hard mouthing a bird is not acceptable behavior. I also use birds in the last stages of ear pinch and the last stages of e-collar overlay.

Like anything else in dog training, if you don’t make a correction the problem will most likely con-tinue and get worse with time. I hope these tips help you out with your dog and both of you enjoy training this summer.

Good luck and good hunting…

Weather extremes makeit difficult to train andkeep your dog sharpduring the off-season.Just as you probablydon’t want to work inknee-deep snow, heavyrain or brutally hot, humid weather, neitherdoes your dog.

However, just becausethe weather outside isfrightful doesn’t meanyour dog should becomea couch potato until thenext season. A dog thatis bored becomes anxious

and stressed. Regular conditioning and training, whetherindoors or outdoors, will help to relieve stress andkeep him or her healthy and fit.

Professional gun dog trainers Paul McGagh ofGlencoe Farm & Kennels in Bismarck, North Dakota,Clyde Vetter of Sharp Shooter’s Kennel in New Rich-mond, Wisconsin, and Josh Miller of River StoneKennels in New Richmond, Wisconsin, recommendshort training sessions consisting of simple obedi-ence drills to keep a dog tuned up year-round,even when outdoor training isn’t an option.

“It is so important to train your dog every day, evenif only for a few minutes,” McGagh advises. “Whenyou can't go outside, indoor training in a garage orworkshop is a great substitute. A physically andmentally engaged dog is a happy, well-behaved dog."

Follow these simple, fun obedience drills straightfrom the pros that can be done indoors even withlimited space to help keep your dog in tiptop mentaland physical shape, regardless of the weather.

OUT OF THE BOX McGagh trains his dogs onbox drills using boxes or platforms he builds.

“I call for the dog to sit or stand on the box. Then,I’ll add a second box and whistle for him or her toplace from box to box. Finally, I’ll add retrieves witha tennis ball and have the dog retrieve from box tobox,” he describes. This box drill can be made assimple or complex as needed for an individual dogand as indoor space allows.

SLOW & STEADY Practicing the “place” commandreinforces steadiness and control and can be done

anytime, anywhere, whether it’s in the garage whilechanging the oil in the car or in the living room whilewatching the game. “Have your dog sit or stand(place) on a dog bed or platform and remain thereuntil you give him or her the appropriate commandto release,” explains Miller. “The beauty of this drillis it doesn’t require your undivided attention — justbe sure your dog stays in your peripheral vision soyou can make a correction if needed.”

FOLLOW THE LEADER To ensure a quiet, con-trolled dog, Vetter recommends advanced heeling

drills, which can be done simply as you walk aroundthe house. “I train a dog to heel in a tight figure-eightmotion, shift into reverse and back up with me, andmake small left and right clicks as if I were positioninghim or her on a lining drill,” Vetter says. “I also teachthat when I lead with my left foot, the dog is to heel. When I sidestep with my right foot, he or she is to‘whoa.’ I overlay a command to an action, then weanthe dog off the command as he or she becomesaccustomed to my body language and actions.”

HOLD, CARRY & RELEASE If your dog developeda bad retrieving habit this past season, now is a

good time to fix it so you can hit the ground runningagain once the weather is nice. “No matter how oldor young your dog, it never hurts to get back to thebasics,” Vetter advises. “Work on trained retrieves byrunning your dog up and down the training table. Useseveral different objects to reinforce what’s alreadybeen taught or to get a correction in as needed.”

AT YOUR COMMAND Before you assume obedience 101 drills — such as “here,” “sit,”

“kennel,” “down” and “no” — sound boring, think again.“Consider the next season and the areas you’d like topolish with your dog before then,” says Miller. “Morethan likely, any of those skills will begin with rock-solid obedience.” Vetter agrees, “Lay or sharpen thefoundation when the weather isn’t cooperating sothat when you can get outside, the groundwork’s already covered.”

And some other important stuff you really should think about reading... If you have submitted your 2019 Invitational test entry application and have not received confirmation of receipt within a couple of weeks of when you sent it in, please check with the office to make sure that it was received.

To all breeders: when submitting a litter registration please make sure to sign your application. Owners of both the sire and dam need to sign the application before you submit the registration application.

To all members: please keep your contact and mailing information up to date. Email the international office at [email protected] with any changes.

The International office is having problems reading many of the application requests for both registry and membership. Please type the application or write clearly, as this is very time consuming. Also, when attaching documents to the International office email for registrations, please attach a pdf file. Look at what you are attaching before sending, because the office is having problems getting blank applica-tions, and the attachments are not readable. The files need to be 8”x11,” and not dark.
