In times of emergency it isimportant for people to be ableto see the way out and to ensurethat fire fighting and safetyequipment can be easily locatedand used.

Let us for example have a look ata corridor of a hotel building.Changes in levels and direction,each door intended to be used inan emergency, emergency exitsand safety signs, eachintersection of the corridor itself,the first aid posts, fire fightingequipment and fire alarm callpoints, the area outside the finalexit door: all of these areas andmany more have to beconsidered when planning theemergency lighting.

How to use Voyager Elite:For escape route signagewe recommend using the exitsign blade versions of VoyagerElite either the surface mountedVoyager Elite X, the semi-recessed Voyager Elite XR or therecessed Voyager Elite IDX, all ofthem incorporating an additionaldiffuser to suit your requirements.

Alternatively take the recessedVoyager IX and the exit signVoyager Elite SX, suspended witheither wires or rods. If you needa wall mounted exit sign chooseVoyager Elite SX together withcantilever brackets.

For illumination use the diffuserversions of Voyager Elite, eitherthe surface mounted VoyagerElite, the semi-recessed VoyagerElite R, or the recessed VoyagerElite ID, each providing acomfortable light.

For the area outside the final exitdoor the bulkhead Voyager Eliteprovides an excellent solutiondue to its IP65 protection.

You will find escape routes inother applications as well, forexample in office buildings,schools and the staircases andcorridors of all buildings ingeneral.

Foyers are a typical example ofan open space. During anemergency or even only a shortmains failure all the people in thefoyer must feel safe. If there is aneed to evacuate the building,everyone must be guided safelyby the shortest possible route tothe nearest exit, without gettinglost or tripping over.

How to use Voyager Elite:For open space areas in a buildinguse the bulkhead version VoyagerElite for providing anti-paniclighting. Alternatively if a room isfitted with a suspended ceilingyou can use the semi-recessedversion - Voyager Elite R, or therecessed diffuser version VoyagerElite ID, providing a sleekintegrated look into the ceiling.

For directing people along theescape route simply take thematching exit sign versionsVoyager Elite X, Voyager Elite XRor Voyager Elite IDX. If youwould prefer a hanging exit signchose Voyager Elite SX.

The product design of theVoyager Elite family is based ona simple oval shape. Thisprovides a unique alternative tothe traditional rectangularemergency lighting in today’smarket.

The design detail, which runsthrough the entire Voyager Eliterange, presents an aestheticbenefit; hence you will find theellipsoidal shape of the bulkheadreflected in the endcaps of thehanging exit sign.

Excellent opticalperformance

This means that for a typicalcorridor (2m wide and 3m high)luminaires are spaced at 9.6m, ifyou use the basic emergencyversion of Voyager Elite orVoyager Elite X, and at 10.9m ifyou use a SelfTest or addressabletest version. Only two luminairesare needed for a typical 19mcorridor, saving you theinstallation costs of two extraluminaires compared to using alower performance luminaire.This represents an overall costsaving of 50% - materials andlabour.

Just like fire protection systems,emergency lighting is potentiallylife saving but worthless andhazardous if the equipment is notproperly maintained. As aconsequence there areincreasingly stringent legalrequirements to regularly inspect,test and maintain emergencylighting in workplaces or publicbuildings.

Explorer, the Thorn LightingEmergency Test product range,provides automated testing ofemergency luminaires that is fullycompliant with EuropeanStandards. This offers completepeace of mind and safety withoutthe need for costly and timeconsuming manual testing by acompetent person, which isrequired for the basic emergencyrange version of Voyager Elite.Explorer has been designed withthree options to suit varyingrequirements and budgets.

Explorer SelfTestSelfTest has an integraldiagnostic microprocessorcontained within an emergencyluminaire, e.g. Voyager Elite. Abi-colour LED integrated in theluminaire indicates status as itmonitors and automatically testsits emergency functions atintervals compliant withlegislation. Easy to install andrequiring no additional cabling,Explorer SelfTest provides simpleand reliable standaloneautomatic testing, eliminating theneed for costly manual testing bya competent person.

Explorer ProjectAn addressable testing system,providing fully automaticmonitoring, testing and faultlogging for emergency luminarieslike Voyager Elite, using ExplorerProject XP128 Controller.Explorer Project’s addressablefault reporting capabilitieseliminate the need for visualinspection. This offers a highlyconvenient and fullyprogrammable solution that isideal for small and medium sizedprojects of up to 128 luminaires(or when using Explorer ProjectXPX64 Extenders, up to 256luminaires can be controlled). Thesystem works by periodically andautomatically testing theemergency luminaires forworking efficiency. The tests arecentrally recorded and any faultsare logged. These can then beprinted (using the handheldExplorer Project XPPRI Printer) or,if the optional Explorer ProjectXPGSM module is installed, faultscan also be reported via an SMStext message to a mobile phone.Fault reports identify theluminaire concerned and the typeof fault (lamp, battery oremergency interface), allowingswift location and repair.

Explorer VisionA programmable addressabletesting system for emergencylighting, which allows tests to berun automatically or manuallyusing a central PC withmonitoring software.
