time based on a variety of factors. The areas talked about include hormones, body

changes from age 12 to becoming an adult, the reproductive system (touched more upon

during the sexual education course), heredity and development, and death and dying.

These topics may be sensitive to talk about, but in a safe learning environment students

will feel comfortable and be able to express their questions or concerns.

9-12 Broad Content Area Definitions:

Lifetime Activities: Lifetime fitness activities are long-term fitness programs meant to

slowly, yet efficiently, improve your health. Instead of training for a specific event or

sessions. Examples of lifetime activities are yoga, zumba, hiking, rock climbing, and

water activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding.

Barriers: The objective in net and barrier games is to send an object over a net or a barrier

space. Striking with hands, rackets, and paddles as well as volleying are primary skills in

net and wall games. The space is usually divided in half. Net/ barrier sports include

volleyball, tennis, table tennis, pickle ball and badminton.

Physical Fitness: Increasing each component of fitness for personal benefit such as:

cardiovascular endurance to increase oxygen to the muscle, muscular endurance to have

muscles function for a long length of time, muscular strength to increase the amount of

force for a single contraction of a muscle and, flexibility to increase the range of motion

Page 7: Vermont Lake Monstersusers.rowan.edu/~cone/curriculum/Scope.sp16/VT-Lake_Monsters.pdf · healthy diet and healthy habits. HE 1 Students will understand healthy relationships, decision

of joints. The Fitnessgram will be performed to access all fitness components based on

teams, which compete versus one another to achieve a common goal of winning. Such

to be used to achieve team success. Sports covered will be basketball, soccer, softball,

touchkball and team handball.
