About the Health CheckAdd-on

This chapter includes the following topics:

■ About Health Check Add-on

■ How the Health Check Add-on works

About Health Check Add-onStorage Foundation Health Check Add-on lets you view the details of theconfiguration status of the managed hosts in your datacenter. The add-on performschecks to validate whether the Storage Foundation configuration in yourdatacenter conforms to a predefined standard.

Health Check Add-on provides the following capabilities:

■ Lets you generate the Health Check report that lists the details of the healthcheck violations that occurred in your datacenter.

■ Lists the details of the objects and hosts on which the health check violationoccurred.

■ Recommends the actions that you can perform to address a health checkviolation.

■ Lists the number of checks that are passed and the number of checks that arefailed.

■ Lets you mark a health check violation as acceptable such that it is not listedas a violation when you generate the report again.

■ Lets you compare two Health Check reports that are created using the sametemplate.

1Chapter

Page 12: Veritas Storage Foundation™ Manager Health Check Add-on ... · VeritasStorageFoundation™ Manager Health Check Add-on User's Guide UNIX 2.1. Storage Foundation Manager Health Check

Health Check Add-on lets you do the following using the Storage FoundationHealth Check Wizard:

■ Configure the checks that you want to perform.

■ Specify one or more managed hosts in your datacenter to perform the checkson (optional).

■ Create a new Health Check report.

■ View, manage, and compare the Health Check reports.

As part of customizing the checks, you must create a new template and set theoptions for the checks in that template. You can use this template when you createa new Health Check report.

You can set the Health Check report as public such that other users can view it.Also, Health Check Add-on lets you print the Health Check report, save the HealthCheck report on your computer, and email the details of the report.

You can do one of the following to specify the managed hosts on which you wantto run the Health Check report:

■ Include specific hosts to the template that you use to create the report.

■ Exclude specific hosts from the template to avoid using them while yougenerate the Health Check report.

■ Specify the hosts in the wizard while specifying the details of a Health Checkreport.

You need to start a Health Check report manually. The time that is required forcollecting data to generate a Health Check report depends on the number of hostson which you want to perform the health checks.

You can run only one Health Check report at a time. The Health Check reportsthat you start later are queued-up to be processed.

Health Check Add-on lets you view the progress of the report that is processedcurrently. You can also view the summary and details of each completed HealthCheck report.

You can compare two Health Check reports that are created using the sametemplate. You can view the difference between two reports to see the violationsthat are reported after you generate the first report. You can view the similaritiesbetween two reports to see the violations that are reported in the first HealthCheck report, but still not resolved.

How the Health Check Add-on worksIn a Health Check report, you can view the configuration status of managed hosts. Most of the information that is required to generate the Health Check report isgathered from managed hosts. The Storage Foundation Health Check discoverymodule that is installed on the managed hosts gathers the data to generate theHealth Check report. Also, the Health Check Add-on uses the data that SF Managerhas collected and stored in its database. The data is processed in the ManagementServer and presented to you as the Health Check report.

On each managed host, a configuration file is specifically created for the HealthCheck report that you initiate. The configuration file contains all the options for

the discovery cycle for that report. When you initiate a new Health Check reporton a specific managed host, the discovery module triggers a new discovery cycleon the managed host to gather the details of its configuration.

The discovery module uses Storage Foundation commands and system commandsto get the details of the configuration of the managed hosts. The discovery modulepushes the information that it gathered using the commands to the SF Managercentral database. After the discovery is completed on all of the managed hoststhat you have specified, the component on the Management Server processes thatinformation. Then the discovery module consolidates the information in the formof a report. This report is presented to you.

In a managed host, the Health Check Add-on runs in the background at low priority. So the Health Check Add-on has a low affect on the performance of any applicationthat runs on that managed host.

About Health Check templatesA Health Check template is the collection of customized options for each availablecheck. By default, a new Health Check template lists all the available checks. Fromthese checks, you can specify the checks that you want to perform on the managedhosts.

A template lets you do the following:

■ Include the managed hosts on which you need to perform checks.

■ Exclude managed hosts on which you do not want to perform checks.

■ Set options specific to each check.

■ Enable the checks that you want to use in the template.

■ Disable the checks that you do not want to use in the template.

If you want to create multiple reports using the same set of configuration optionsfor the checks, you can associate the same template with those reports. Later, youcan verify those reports to ensure that the violations that occurred are addressed. Also, you can view the new violations that are occurred, if any.

About health checksA health check is a rule that validates whether the Storage Foundationconfiguration in your datacenter conforms to a predefined standard. The checksavailable with Health Check Add-on cover four areas of the Storage Foundationconfiguration in your datacenter. This categorization of the checks helps youunderstand the scope of each check and the area that it targets. The following arethe health checks available with Health Check Add-on and the categories to whichthey belong:

Checks that belong to this category verify thatthe storage resources in the Storage Foundationconfiguration are set up so that they are resistantto failures. These checks also verify that you canrecover the storage resources quickly if a failureoccurs.

The following are the examples for the checks inAvailability category:

■ Large DRL

Large DRL checks whether or not the plex styleDirty Region Log (DRL) is larger than 32 KB.

■ Disk and Controller Failures

Disk and Controller Failures checks for diskand controller failures.

Availability

Checks that belong to this category verify thatthe storage resources in the Storage Foundationconfiguration are set up to perform efficiently.

The following are the examples for the checks inPerformance category:

■ I/O Access Time

I/O Access Time checks the output from vxstatto verify whether any volume has experiencedlong access time.

■ I/O Fragment

I/O Fragment checks whether or not the VxVMbuffer size is set to 10MB.

Performance

Page 18: Veritas Storage Foundation™ Manager Health Check Add-on ... · VeritasStorageFoundation™ Manager Health Check Add-on User's Guide UNIX 2.1. Storage Foundation Manager Health Check

Checks that belong to this category verify thatthe storage resources in the SF configuration areset up to use the available space optimally.

The following are the examples for the checks inUtilization category:

■ Underutilized Disks

Underutilized Disks checks to see if Disks inuse by Volume Manager are used efficientlyto store data.

■ Disk group spare Space

Disk group spare Space checks the disk groupsto see if the amount of spare disk space isadequate.

Utilization

Checks that belong to this category verify thatthe general practices or rules that improve theoverall Storage Foundation configuration areemployed.

The following are the examples for the checks inBest Practices category:

■ Single LUN Striping

Single LUN Striping checks whether or notthe stripe subdisks are on a single LUN.

■ Cross Enclosure Mirroring

Cross Enclosure Mirroring checks whether ornot the mirrored volume is spread acrossmultiple enclosures.

Best Practices

The Health Check Add-on lets you set the options for each check. By default, allthe checks in the template are in Enabled state. You can disable the checks in atemplate, if required.

Managing health checkreports

This chapter includes the following topics:

■ About Health Check reports

■ About health check violations

■ Starting a new Health Check report

■ Creating a new Health Check report

■ Viewing Health Check report status

■ Canceling a Health Check report

■ Viewing completed Health Check reports

■ Marking health check violations as acceptable

About Health Check reportsThe Health Check report displays the details of configuration status of the managedhosts. The report is generated using the information that the Storage FoundationHealth Check discovery module gathers and populates in the SF Manager database. Also, the information that SF Manager has already collected is used for generatingthe reports. It displays the result of each check that is performed. The report helpsyou view the details of each health check violation.

The time that is required to generate a Health Check report depends on thefollowing:

■ Number of managed hosts in your datacenter on which you want to performthe health check.

3Chapter

Page 40: Veritas Storage Foundation™ Manager Health Check Add-on ... · VeritasStorageFoundation™ Manager Health Check Add-on User's Guide UNIX 2.1. Storage Foundation Manager Health Check

■ Number of the objects that are to be analyzed on each host.

You can run only one Health Check report at a time. If you want to generate morethan one Health Check report, they are queued to be processed.

You can use a predefined template while generating a Health Check report. Atemplate is associated with predefined set of health check options and hosts. Ifyou want to compare the statuses of configuration options, you need to generatea Health Check report multiple times without changing the context. In suchscenarios, you can use a template to ensure the consistency of context.

To compare two Health Check reports, you can use the following wizard panels:

■ View difference between two reports

■ View similarities between two reports

You can know the differences between the latest and the old Health Check reports.Health Check Add-on displays the health checks that are:

■ Failed in both the reports.

■ Failed in the latest report.

■ Failed in the old report, but do not appear in the latest report.

You can view the similarities between two Health Check reports to view theconditions that are persisting between two Health Check reports.

Before you generate the Health Check report, you can specify whether you needto make that report public so that other users can also view your report inread-only mode. Also, you can print the Health Check report, save the HealthCheck report on your computer, and send the details of the Health Check reportby email. If you want to run the report on a set of managed hosts different fromthe managed hosts that are associated with the template, you can specify themfrom the list of hosts present in your datacenter.

A Health Check report has two sections: a summary section and a detailed section. In the summary section, you can view the diagrammatic representation of theHealth Check report.

The following are the four types of summary reports. From these summary reports, you can delve into the details:

■ Checks Performed Summary

■ Checks by Host Summary

■ Violations by Category

■ Violations by Object Type

About health check violationsA health check violation occurs when a configuration option in a managed hostdoes not meet the condition that a corresponding health check sets for it. You canview the details of health check violations that occurred on the managed hosts inthe Health Check report.

The Health Check report lets you accept the health check violations. When yougenerate the Health Check report again, it does not display the violations thatyou have accepted. When you accept a health check violation, the objects on whichthat violation is reported are added to the Acceptable List. The violations that youremove from the Acceptable List are no longer considered as accepted violations.

The Health Check report recommends the appropriate remedial measures thatyou can use to address the health check violation. Also, the Health Check reportdirects you to the managed host on which the violations occurred.

This appendix includes the following topics:

■ Example 1 – Enabling all DMP paths in your datacenter

■ Example 2 – Improving access time to a Storage Foundation volume in yourdatacenter

■ Example 3 – Optimizing file system utilization on your Storage Foundationhosts

■ Example 4 – Upgrading the Storage Foundation disk groups in your datacenterto the latest version

Example 1 – Enabling all DMP paths in yourdatacenter

As a storage administrator, your primary responsibility is to ensure the availabilityof business critical applications and data. The non-availability of applications ordata can have an adverse impact on the business. For example, if you administerthe storage network of a major online stock market trading system and you failto ensure the availability of online trading application and data, it incurs heavyloses to businesses.

One of the methods to ensure the availability of applications and data to yourcustomers is to enable all the Dynamic Multipathing (DMP) paths to the storageassets in your datacenter. Active DMP paths ensure multiple I/O paths betweenservers and storage devices. Multiple I/O paths ensure the availability ofapplication and data to your customers.
