A verb expresses an action, a feeling, or a state of
being.
Two main types of verbs are helping verbs and linking verbs.
Action VerbsTell what the subject does or did.
They can be physical or mental.
Examples:
•Sue ran to the store. (physical)
•I know a lot about math. (mental)
Linking VerbsLinks the subject of the sentence to
a word in the predicate.
The most common linking verbs are forms of the verb “be”.
be, is, am, are, was, were, been, being
Example: We are late.
Helping Verbs
Help the main verb express precise meaning
They are combined with the main verbs to form verb phrases.
Examples : He has painted the house.
(The helping verb is “has”. The main verb is “painted”.)
She could walk to school. (The helping verb is “could”. The main verb is “walk”.)
