THE CITY OF NANTES
South of the Loire Le Pellerin The canal de la Martinière dating from the end of the 19th century, the canal stretches over 15km and was built in order to compensate the shallowness of the river Loire between Le Pellerin and Nantes, where the sandbanks hindered the passage of boats. No sooner was it completed than it was abandoned and is today used for hydraulic regulation equipment and is a sightseeing spot where you can go for a walk, go fishing and take part in various sailing activities. L'île du Massereau hosts more than 80 types of bird.
THE CITY OF NANTES South Loire Saint-Aignan-de-Grand-Lieu Le lac de Grand Lieu is unique in Europe and its swelling in winter makes it on of the largest natural lakes in France. Its expanse and shallowness could be compared to some large African lakes. This natural reserve shelters no less than 250 types of bird, notably the largest colony of silver herons. North Loire towards Couëron The Audubon marshland shelters numerous types of bird and palmiped. During the spring and summer you will see silver herons, moor hens, lapwings, teals, ducks, harriers, hawks and even some storks. A curiosity to see - the tour à plomb' erected in 1878. North of the Loire, the river Erdre The mouth of the river Erdre is on the Ile de Versailles in Nantes. It is lined with chateaux and follies fro the 19th centure and leads into the Nantes-Brest canal. South of the Loire Vertou The Sèvre nantaise is the waterway through the vineyards. Wine used to be transported in barrels along the Sèvre to Nantes. Starting from the pont Rousseau in Rezé, the route travels along the river Sèvre passing through ports and docks. See the Chaussée des Moines in Vertou. South of the Loire Haute Goulaine The marshes of Goulaine located in the grounds of the château de Goulaine, is a spawning ground for pike. From a rowing boat a watchful eye may observe various migrating birds: silver herons, ducks, coots...

THE CITY OF : BREST
The Harbor of Brest
Brest is actually a site of considerable importance, a dream for any military strategist. The city controls the entry of an immense bay, deep, one of the largest in the world. Its calm waters can accommodate the largest and most powerful armada of warships. The input bottleneck is large enough (a little less than two kilometers) to avoid dangerous maneuver, but close enough to be effectively protected.
Anne de Bretagne’s Castle
At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the castle's defenses are modernized to meet the progress of artillery. At the same time, the two towers are decorated in comfortable apartments for the benefit of the Duchess Anne de Bretagne. But the future Queen of France, will install only a few weeks in 1505.
Brest became a military port
At the end of the sixteenth century, the population of Brest reached 1500 people, and Henry gave him the status of a city. But it was Cardinal Richelieu, in the 1630s, which profoundly change the fate of the city
Twentieth century to today
In 1941, the city will suffer Allied bombing, which reach their peak during the last 43 days and siege the city in September 1944. Brest is finally released on 18 September, but it remains in ruins and rubble. Today, Brest found a new dynamic. The success of major events such as the International Day of the Sea (every four years, this event attracts over a million visitors) is the best illustration of this approach.
Brest annually hosts many national and international symposia and congresses attracted by the potential research and business and the quality of home conference facilities. The flagship facility of this home policy conference and congress is the Quartz in Brest. In the city center of Brest, the tram, hotels and trade, Quartz has efficient equipment and a team experienced in organizing events of all kinds.
Le Parc des Expositions de Brest Penfeld whose modular capabilities can accommodate a few hundred to several thousand participants. A set of conference rooms of all sizes (Océanopolis at the University Technology Park at Brest- Iroise, etc…) complete this home conference device. An international airport (1 million passengers per year) located 20 minutes from downtown.
THE CITY OF : BREST
Explorers, adventurers, Bretons have a taste of the global adventure. Neolithic to the Renaissance, Brittany has seen the emergence of prosperous societies animating intense exchange networks with the British Isles, Galicia, Flanders, the whole of northern Europe and even the Mediterranean. Pays de Brest, “English houses” Saint- Renan Conquet, reflect these trade relations who founded the Breton wealth in the sixteenth century.
Europe reopens paths of the sea, the Brest region derives dividends : the traffic on both sides of the Channel illustrates the growth of cross-border economic relations, cooperation within the Atlantic Arc where Bretons were the promoters, the explosion of cultural relations and twinning with the Celtic countries reflect inter -regional alliances in a changing Europe.

History and hidden treasures
3,000 years of history have given the city of Metz, lying at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers, its unique character, with its heritage of outstanding beauty so remarkably preserved in a haven of greenery.
Since the times of Saint-Arnould, bishop of Metz in the 7th century, the city has welcomed within its walls some great men whose influence has marked the worlds of literature, politics, science and the arts.
Legends have settled in the heart of the narrow streets and come to life in the very stones.
The Graoully, legendary dragon, dominates the fantasy world of Metz Saint Nicolas and Pierre Perrat follow in its footsteps in a merry-go-round
through the centuries…
Legends and anecdotes
Legends have settled in the heart of the narrow streets and come to life in the very stones. The Graoully, legendary dragon, dominates the fantasy world of Metz. Saint Nicolas and Pierre Perrat follow in its footsteps in a merry-go-round through the centuries…
The Graoully
"With eyes bigger than the stomach, and a head bigger than the rest of the body, with horrific, wide jaws and lots of teeth both upper and lower…".
This is the portrait according to François Rabelais of the Graoully, the dragon of Metz, who lived long in the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre until Saint Clément, come to convert the city to Christianism, ordered it to leave the place immediately!
Clément tied up the Graoully with his stole and took him calmly to the banks of the river Seille nearby. The dragon and all the snakes following it dived into the river and disappeared forever.
108
Saint Nicolas
According to the famous nursery rhyme, there were three little children on their way to harvest the fields.
Having lost their way, they asked a butcher to take them in! He greeted them with open arms: when they had eaten and fallen asleep, the butcher slit their throats, cut them into pieces and put them in the salting tub. Time passed and the butcher forgot all about them.
Seven years later, as he was passing through Lorraine, Saint Nicolas also begged the butcher for hospitality. When questioned as to what he would like for supper, he asked if he could taste some of the salted meat which had been in the
salting pot for the past seven years!
His secret revealed the butcher fled… Saint Nicolas approached the salting pot and worked a miracle: the three little children, stretching and yawning, opened their eyes, a little confused… as though they had just woken up.
Pierre Perrat’s pact with the devil
Once upon a time, there lived a skilled architect and builder of cathedrals, Pierre Perrat.
What a headache this Saint-Etienne cathedral was turning out to be! So few stones, so much light…
The story goes that Pierre Perrat was unable to resolve the mystery of the squaring of the circle, so he concluded a pact with the devil.
Happily he was more cunning than Faust; the architect deceived the Malignant one and saved his soul from damnation.
109
The Easter bunny
Since the 16th century, the most popular tradition concerning Easter in German-speaking countries is the tale of the hare or bunny rabbit who, in the early morning, does his best to hide his sugar or chocolate eggs in the gardens, to the delight of little children.
It is with great expectation and pleasure that they find the eggs hidden by the imaginary hare, symbol of life and resurrection on the first mornings of spring!
In this work, where he tells the famous legend of the Graoully, a fearsome dragon who would occasionally devour inhabitants of Metz, he borrows elements from the traditions of Metz and expressions from the local dialect.
The ruins of his home, the Maison de Rabelais, located in the heart of the city near the Saint-Genest chapel have been well-preserved and are used today as a backdrop to a city life of culture and conviviality.
Gastronomy at its best
Quality dishes, a pleasure for the palate, a famous heritage. The "Tables de Rabelais" is a symbol of local gastronomy, a testimony to the Rabelaisian spirit. With the help of the Tourist Office, it groups together thirty or so restaurants, professionals of the food trade and experienced producers whose business it is to develop flavour, who long to communicate the values which make up the French art de vivre, combined with subtle influences from across the borders. "Tables de Rabelais" partner service providers have signed a Quality Charter whereby they undertake to serve regional products and specialities while taking into consideration the criteria on which customer satisfaction is measured,
110
namely: intensity of flavour, service provided, welcome and information made available to consumers. Delicious products for everyone to enjoy The "Tables de Rabelais" is an invitation to sample a variety of culinary creations, made possible thanks to the knowledge and talent of the Masters of flavour: traditional or contemporary menus, sugary delights, gourmet tours, dishes from the region or dating back to medieval times, wine-tasting trails. Young and old gourmets alike, come and savour a feast for the palate to suit all pockets!
Seasonal and traditional aromas The "Tables de Rabelais" objective is to promote locally farmed specialities and the diversity of skills of those who work to produce and transform, turning products into something special. Products change to match the passing seasons, honouring the crops and the symbolic aromas of the area (strawberries, Mirabelle plums, grapes, truffles, etc.). They are in total harmony with festivities marking the calendar year (farm markets, mirabelle festivals, vineyard festivals, Saint Nicolas, advent traditions). Heritage at the table According to their speciality and if given sufficient notice, artisans and producers can rustle up a personalised visit with tasting sessions, giving you the opportunity to discover the skills of their craft. At the "Tables de Rabelais" the menu also offers a chance to discover the astounding heritage of Metz, variations in honey-coloured stone, medieval and Renaissance architecture or mysterious legends. The Tourist Office can recommend a programme of themed commented tours (in French only), food for thought to round off your gourmet tour of Rabelaisian Metz.

The castle of Pau At the beginning it was headland, strategically overlooking the Gave de Pau river. Then a few wooden piles were driven into the ground by way of a hunting lodge. These were then flanked by a fortification tower which transformed it into a small mediaeval castle. Over the years, the ups and downs of life, and alliance and power games, transformed the fortress into a fortified place and engraved the site once and for all in the history of the town, of the Bearn, of the Navarre and in the end of France. It became a castle and then a royal birthplace. A host of extensions and transformations have been carried out on the building over the years in line with strategic and artistic trends. Today, it represents a major example of our history ... The "Febusian" fortresses Gaston III, viscount of the Foix-Bearn house, decided to change name and re-named himself Gaston Fébus. He was a fine diplomat and an excellent warrior and hunter. He proclaimed Bearn to be neutral during the French-English conflict of the Hundred years' war. He stated that he only held the land from God and from his sword. Thanks to his fortified land, Bearn became a sovereign principality which was distinct and separate from the French kingdom. This was the case until 1620. With his modern army, he built military buildings and huge fortresses throughout his states. His architect, Sicard de Lordat, systematically used the Languedoc technique of stone-building which enabled the defensive part of the fortress, which was indispensable for its safety, to be built quickly. Febus, who was a great and brilliant figure, played one of the most important roles in the History of the Bearn. The local gastronomy reflects our region. In addition to its undeniable local aspect, it is also a mixture of the influences from our closest neighbours. Spanish, Bigourdane (from the Bigorre area), Basque, Landaise (from the Landes), Pyrenean (from the Pyrenees), Occitane (from the Langue d'oc) or quite simply ... Bearnese (from Bearn). The cuisine fluctuates between these numerous cultures resulting in its wealth and diversity

PALAIS DES SPORTS – PAU The Palais des sports of Pau is very well situated in the North of the town, nearby the racecourse of Pont long, close to the Bayonne-Toulouse motorway exit. At about 5 minutes from the international airport Pau-Pyrenees, it is also not far from the railway station. This structure is one of the most beautiful French sports equipments. Famous all over France, it is the place where the “Élan Bearnais", one of the best French basket ball team plays; in 2005 a quarter of finale of the Davis Cup was organized there. This magnificent hall has got a capacity of 6,5OO places in its handball configuration. An octagonal disposal provides to all spectators a good overview on the handball field; people are sitting into a real arena, never too far from the players. ’The Palais des sports is endowed with efficient display and audiovisual equipments, as high as the modern needs of great sporting events. For instance, in the centre of the vault, there is a four faces electronic board insuring lighting and sound system functions. Finally, the Sports stadium provides also equipments adapted to professional sportsmen such as body-building material, saunas and whirlpool bath’’….. The city of : PARIS
Paris, the good taste capital Paris is renowned worldwide as a capital of gastronomy: a winning combination of talent, expertise and high-quality French produce. To sample the delights of traditional French cuisine, the choice of restaurants and cafés is simply huge, each with its own particular atmosphere and style. Parisian restaurants, ambassadors of good taste, offer up an endless range of flavours: tasty country dishes, Mediterranean specialities, recipes from all over the world, a galaxy of cold meats and cheeses, creative desserts… Restaurants, bars, brasseries, tea rooms, ice cream parlours, open-air cafés or pubs invite gourmets from all over the world to a real culinary feast. Green Paris With over 400 parks and gardens, Paris earns its name as the greenest capital in Europe… For a general idea of the different names used to the describe them in French: the small ones are known as “squares”, the medium-sized ones are “jardins” and the bigger ones are “parcs”, not forgetting the two “bois” (woods) on either side of Paris. Sporting a rich variety of trees from near and far, and banks of flowers and shrubs of every colour under the sun, the green spaces of Paris can be reached easily and conveniently by metro or bus. They provide moments to relax and explore - around the twists and turns of their pathways, you will come across statues and interesting pieces of sculpture, lakes and fountains, grottos and waterfalls… Step into one of the vast greenhouses made of iron and glass for a complete change of scenery - that of rare and exotic plants. In the summer, pavilions and lawns welcome jazz bands, world or classical music for

sharing pleasant times. For children: play areas, pony rides and swings and roundabouts are their exclusive domain. A variety of guided tours are organized: details are available in the town halls and Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau information centres. The stuff of dreams, a celebration of beauty... Where would Paris be without the spell-binding skills of the master craftsmen of “haute couture” and luxury goods ? Year after year, their fashion collections grab the limelight and their creations dazzle the avenue Montaigne and the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Sophisticated or baroque, the window displays of their superb boutiques are a celebration of female beauty, a fantasy of fabulous fabrics, delicate scents and sparkling jewels.
The Eiffel Tower, undoubtedly the Paris landmark and must-see monument, is 324 metres high and weighs a total of 10,000 tons. Built for the World Fair in 1889...the tower took two years, two months and five days to complete. You can take the stairs or the lift up. There are souvenir shops and the Altitude 95 restaurant with its decor reminiscent of an airship on the first level, while the second level offers an opportunity to enjoy a gastronomic menu at the smart Jules Verne restaurant, 125 metres above ground level. Once you get to the third and final platform, you’ll be up there among the clouds with an amazing 360-degree view of the city.

Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Monet, Rodin, Delacroix or Picasso: all these icons of the art world are represented in the museums of Paris. But art is also rehistory, antiquities from the four corners of the world, collections of miniatures and precious objects, or even the future of space exploration… The majority of Parisian museums are open at the weekend and closed on Monday or Tuesday as well as some public holidays. Most of them stay open late one evening each week. Guided tours often need to be booked in advance. Admission to the permanent collections of museums run by the Paris City Council (Ville de Paris) is free and admission to national museums is free on the first Sunday of each month. Certain museums also offer free admission other days of the week. You can check the details in our information pages or directly with the museums themselves. In all cases, any reductions apply to permanent collections and not to visiting exhibitions. Children, students, job-seekers and seniors can also benefit from special reductions.
Bercy Village, in the 12th arrondissement, is a gem of a little village right in the heart of the city: shops and restaurants combine easy living and gastronomy in a pleasant paved courtyard. You should profit on sundays, too, just to sit outside a cafe or stroll along the place: you surely find something in one of the small shops, open daily from 11am to 9pm.
159
A paved courtyard surrounded by white stone former wine storehouses and peaceful outdoor eating areas. An architecture that combines stone with steel, wood and glass. The Saint-Emilion and its 42 listed wine storehouse buildings are the last remains of the Bercy warehouses which for over a century housed one of the greatest wine markets in the world. Bercy is also a place for pleasure and relaxation with its boutiques, restaurants, leisure activities and special events that extend over 15 000 m² and include CLUB Med World, FNAC Junior, G. Truffaut, Hippopotamus, Musées et Cie, Nature et Découverte, Nicolas, Résonances, Séphora B, Vinéa Café et the multiplex UGC Ciné Cité. Open every day from 11am to 9pm (restaurants close at 2am in the morning) 2 Car park with 3 000 places (St-Emilion and Bercy Terroirs) It has the "Tourisme et Handicap" label for physical disability and hearing impairment.
Begin with a coffee on the Champs-Elysées, then take a gentle stroll down to the Eiffel Tower along the avenue Marceau, passing the famous flame of the Pont de l’Alma. From the top of the Tower, you’ll be treated to an unrestricted view over Paris. Then, hop onto one of the river boats moored just below and glide down the Seine as far as Notre-Dame. When you’ve finished your visit of the cathedral, it’ll be time for a lunch break. The Louvre is just half an hour away and awaits you for a made-to-measure tour around the major works of art. As you leave, the day will be drawing to a close over the footbridge des Arts, the Pont Neuf and the Institut de France… Cross over the river and make your way to Odéon metro station which will lead you straight to the Montmartre hill where you can enjoy an exceptional panorama over the city and its monuments, illuminated at nightfall.
