Venture to the Bluegrass for the Junior National Hereford Expo

Here is what you need to know as you prep for “Banners in the Bluegrass.”

he highly anticipated Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) is set for July 11-18, at

the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members can expect a week filled with contests, service projects, showring competition and a family atmosphere. Keep up to date on contest information, rules, regulations, applications and deadlines visit Hereford.org/Youth.

The Advantage newsletter was mailed in early April to all active NJHA members and contains information to help prepare for contests as well as important information regarding JNHE.

Online entriesThe online entry and registration site can be found at HerefordJuniorNational.com. Early bird entry deadline is May 15. The final entry deadline is June 1.

Future ProfessionalsThe new future professionals contest that is designed for juniors to create a resume based on factual work, experiences, education, etc., of that junior that can be used for future career and educational purposes. Resumes will be judged prior to the JNHE each year.

A panel of qualified judges will critique the entries on the following: organization, content, grammar, categories used, relevance, layout and format. Topics will differ for intermediate and senior divisions. The top senior and intermediate applicants will be invited to participate in an interview with industry leaders and professionals in their field. Selected applicants will be notified prior to JNHE and will interview Tuesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. Contestants are encouraged to wear business professional clothing and bring at least three copies of their resume and cover letter.

Produce-of-dam group classThis year, the produce-of-dam class is set to follow the cow-calf pairs and bred-and-owned females on Thursday, July 16.

Bridging the GapBack again is the college career fair, which debuted at the 2019 JNHE. This opportunity connects juniors with colleges and employers and allows members to engage in one-on-one interactions with industry representatives. Hereford juniors gain a head start on their future career by making connections at this two-day event. Make plans to attend either Monday, July 13, or Tuesday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the West Hall A & B. More information will be posted for the event on Hereford.org/Youth.

Pen-to-PenThe mentorship program, Pen-to-Pen returns for another year to provide junior members the chance to connect with other juniors from all over the country. The program continues past the JNHE as mentors and mentees continue to build a relationship and connect at industry events leading up to the 2020 JNHE. Register online at HerefordJuniorNational.com by June 15.

National Hereford Queen service projectNational Hereford Queen Melanie Fishel is hosting “The Ties that Bind Us” fundraiser to support the Callea Mae Breiner Memorial Foundation. Fishel is selling elastic show laces called “Y-Ties.” Callea was a member of the National Hereford Women board of directors, cattlewoman, nurse, avid runner, and mother to two incredible boys.

JNHE Judge BiosKyle Colyer, Bruneau, Idaho Owned female show associate judge

Kyle and his family own and operate Colyer Herefords and Angus. He and his wife, Bobby Jean, have two children, Piper and Cruz, who are now the fourth generation on the ranch and are active National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members.

Kyle was a member of the Kansas State University and Colby Community College livestock judging teams. After earning a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University, he returned to the ranch in Bruneau.

Kyle Conley, Sulphur, Okla.Bred-and-owned females and cow-calf pairs judge

Kyle and his wife, Amanda, own and operate Conley Cattle. The couple has always embraced a strong passion for livestock which they hope to

instill into their two sons, Case and Jack. A third-generation Angus cattle

breeder, Kyle judged livestock at Butler Community College and then Oklahoma State University (OSU).

Kyle strives to produce seedstock that are competitive in the showring and functional in the pasture.

Jeremy Haag, Smithville, Mo.Bred-and-owned females and cow-calf pairs associate judge

Jeremy is a third-generation Angus breeder from Plymouth, Ind., where his family has raised Angus cattle for over 50 years. He owns 50 head of Angus,

primarily marketing junior show heifers and performance cattle to breeders in the Midwest. He and his wife, Jenny, have three kids.

Jeremy earned a bachelor’s in animal agribusiness from Purdue University. He was a member of the livestock judging teams at Purdue and Joliet Junior College. He has been a sale manager at the American Angus Hall of Fame for the last 16 years.

Kasey Heindel, Columbus Junction, IowaTodd Herman, Lima, OhioSenior and intermediate showmanship judges

Fourth-generation Hereford breeder Kasey Heindel grew up showing cattle with her parents, Todd and Kim Herman.

The OSU graduate and her husband, Dan, and their son, Kannan, raise crossbred and Hereford cattle. In June, they are expecting another farmhand to help out with the chores

Todd grew up on a diversified livestock operation in Edgerton, Ohio. He currently manages the cowherd at Jones Show Cattle and raises Herefords with his parents, Jim and Beth Herman, and Kasey and Dan.

After graduating from Michigan State University, Todd worked for ACE Polled Herefords, which later became Star Lake Cattle Ranch.

Drew Pérez, Canyon, TexasBull and steer show judge

Drew grew up on his family’s registered Hereford and commercial operation in Nara Visa, N.M., and was very active in the NJHA. He and his wife, Lauren, and their two children, Mila (2) and Myles (1), reside in Canyon and raise registered Herefords.

Drew was a member of the livestock judging team at Butler Community College and Texas Tech University and has judged multiple national shows.

Robyn Kelley Samsel, Cloverdale, Ind.Group classes, team fitting and top 10 senior showmanship associate judge

Robyn grew up on the show road helping with her parents’ fitting businesses. She and her husband, Ryan, live in Cloverdale, where they own and operate Samsel Cattle Co.

Robyn splits her time between Indiana and Texas working for the family business and Barber Ranch, where she has been the showbarn herdsman for the past four years.

She works passionately with junior exhibitors, and is just as passionate about fitting show cattle. Her efforts earned her the title of the 2020 Hereford Herdsman of the Year.

Dr. Dan Shike, Sadorus, Ill.Owned female show judge

Dan and his wife, Jennifer, have three children — Olivia, Hunter and Harper. Dan is an associate professor at the University of Illinois, where his responsibilities include teaching and research in beef cattle nutrition and management. Dan has coached 11 teams at the University of Illinois and now coordinates the livestock judging team and supervises the university’s three beef cattle operations.

Dan has judged at numerous national, state and local shows as well as internationally at the Sydney Royal and Royal Adelaide in Australia.

Kirbie and Mark Sims, Owens Cross Roads, Ala.Junior, peewee and pre-peewee showmanship judges

Kirbie grew up in the Hereford industry at her family’s KLD Herefords in Waxahachie, Texas. She was the National Polled Hereford Queen in 2009. After earning a bachlor’s degree in animal science from Texas A&M University, she obtained a nursing degree from Texas Woman’s University. She earned her master’s degree at Georgetown University and is now a family nurse practitioner in Huntsville, Ala.

Kirbie and her husband, Mark, married in 2016. Mark was born and raised on a ranch in Elgin, Okla. He received his bachelor’s degree in animal science from OSU. In 2019 he started Sims Plus, LLC, a full-service sale management and auction company.
